February Land Use meeting of the BRVA By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com There were approximately 25 in attendance at the February public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association’s (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee meeting. It was held on February 28 in the basement of Northminster Presbyterian Church. The BRVA does not approve or deny requests, but decides whether or not to support a petition that will be heard downtown by the appropriate City of Indianapolis department. There were four items on the agenda, which is in bold below. Photos of all of the properties are on www.broadripplegazette.com A. 6528 Cornell Avenue, Joshua Savage with Wooden McLaughlin representing Todd Reisenbigler, owner of the property, regarding a variance of use to provide for a restaurant (not permitted) and a six-foot tall freestanding sign (not permitted), with a five-foot setback (15 feet required), with front, side and rear setbacks, per plans filed. Petition #2017-UV3-003 Hearing before the Metropolitan Zoning Board of zoning Appeals Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. This item was a variance to allow Natural Born Juicers to open in the small building on the west end of 6528 Cornell Avenue. Currently this is the garage on the parcel that is home to Athletic Annex Running Centre [C5 on map]. Natural Born Juicers is currently

on Mass Ave and is looking to expand into Broad Ripple. Using the garage at 6528 is very similar to the use across Coil Street by Rene’s Bakery at 6524 Cornell. There were discussions about lighting and signage. Everyone came to an agreement on all issues and the committee voted unanimously to support the petition. B. 6311 Westfield Boulevard, Todd Morris, owner of the property regarding changes to the development of the property to provide commercial and residential spaces. This item was for the apartments/retail/parking garage project scheduled to replace the building at 6311 Westfield [F6 on map], just to the north of Brugge Brasserie. The changes to the project since the last appearance before the committee were discussed. The project is currently planned to have 82 apartments, 4900 sq ft of offices, 3800 sq ft of retail, and 85 parking spaces in the garage. There was quite a bit of parking talk. The parking spots along Riviera (runs from Westfield east to McDonald’s) would remain, but would move south and Riviera would be narrowed to 22 feet to slow traffic. There was opposition to the proposed parking spots along Westfield on the west end of the property. It was suggested that the Monon Trail crosswalk could be reconfigured from crossing Winthrop and Westfield to crossing Riviera and Westfield. The parking garage for the project would generate only about 12 to 15 public spaces during evenings and weekends, with the rest used for the residents. Another subject was the project’s application for TIF funds. The developers are requesting $2.4 million. This is the kind of TIF where the City would issue bonds for the amount to be repaid by future revenues generated by the project. In the event of a shortfall, the developer would fill in the short funds to pay off the loan. No vote was taken as this item was for information only. C. 6320 Guilford Avenue, Chris Mason regarding the establishment of a restaurant serving burgers, fries, sides, with a beer and wine permit. This item concerns building a BurgerFuel restaurant in the space previously occupied by Quality Leasing at 6320 Guilford Avenue [G4 on map]. BurgerFuel is a restaurant created by Chris Mason in New Zealand. There are over 80 now around the world. This will be the first one in the United States. Chris described his restaurant and answered questions about landscaping and signage. He expects to be open on May 1. This item was also for information only. D. 6283 College Avenue, Alexandra Harris regarding the establishment of a new restaurant, HoiTeaToiTea, with a beer and wine permit. Hearing before the Alcoholic Beverage Commission (ABC) March 20, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. This item was for the opening of HoiTea ToiTea in the space between Crackers Comedy Club and Louie’s Wine Dive on College Avenue [H3 on map] in the old Peppers location. Owner Alexandra Harris described the renovations and said the tea room is expected to open on April 1. This item was also for information only. The next public meeting of the BRVA Land Use and Development committee is scheduled for Tuesday, March 28, at 6pm at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Boulevard [KK28 on map]

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

An Evening with Dawes Sunday, March 19 The Vogue 6259 N. College Avenue 21+, doors 7, show 8 PM, $25 presale, $30 door

I first saw Dawes in 2009 at Locals Only and wrote, “I predict a bright well-deserved future for them.” I should have invested in the stock market that day, because I don’t think I’ve ever made a prediction so spot on. Eight years, five albums, and a boatload of new fans later, Dawes is still folk-rockin’. The lineup hasn’t changed much in that time. Brothers Taylor (vocals/guitar) and Griffin (vocals/drums) Goldsmith and Wylie Gelber (bass) have been in the band since the photo by Nora Spitznogle beginning. Lee Pardini (vocals/keyboards) Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes. joined the band last year. On the “An Evening with Dawes” tour the band has been playing a two-set overview of their discography. I’m really looking forward to it!

Pastor Brent Wright retires from BRUMC Pastor Brent Wright was at Broad Ripple United Methodist Church from 2010 to 2017. Here is a message from him about his departure: “I mentioned then that I would be looking for work outside the local church in this next phase of my ministry. In the months of discernment since, I have found clarity about the shape of my future pastoral leadership: I am being called to explore new forms of Christian community outside the walls of church. In this era when the form that we call ‘church’ is finding less and less purchase in the cultural life of our broader civic community, there is a growing movement exploring different ways of sharing life and ministry as disciples of Jesus. My 14 years of experience leading local church ministry have prepared me to join that movement. And for me, this is about more than just finding innovative ways to ‘do church.’ This is flowing from my own development as a person. “As time has progressed, I’ve found myself less and less at home leading church as we’ve all known it. For a long time, I thought that doing things differently could address that discomfort, but in the past year or two, I’ve seen that my calling is to venture further afield. God has been inviting me out of the structure of church to build a community from scratch, in the process exploring different pastor-layperson roles, different expectations about worship and public visibility, different assumptions about evangelism, different approaches to mission & ministry, etc.”

There is an altogether unworldly vibe at 54th and College - it seems to be a magnet for beautiful people. It also seems to bring out the best in people. I have lived in a lot of places, but no place has ever affected me in this way - not even close. Here is a poem about that vibe: Love is a powerful thing. It is a common thing for radiant Souls to get sucked into this vortex at 54th and College. When Modern Times Urban Truck Stop was open countless people drove there for no apparent reason. And when they arrived they found a new sense of home. (The word ‘Heaven’ came up often there.) When MT closed, we soon learned

what a great experience it was to drink coffee and spend time at CATH and Cornerstone. Today - on a good day You can find me sippin sodas at Northside News Cafe. They have many sandwiches and many magazines. Come by and check it out sometime. We can always benefit from another beautiful person in this part of the World. (But beware you just might get sucked in!) C.W. Pruitt II Mar. 10, 2005

FitLit

a companion to “100 Days of Fitness”

by Laura Minor

Fitness for Nerds! Hello readers. Sorry I took a break last issue but I had a great excuse! I traveled to Boston for a few days and then went straight to Colorado for a family ski trip. The Boston trip was to participate in a convention called NerdCon. This event is a gathering of thousands of people that call themselves Nerdfighters and it includes panels, discussions, Q&A, activities, fan-led programming, concerts, live podcasts, and fan activism. According to its Facebook page, NerdCon is a giant celebration of all things nerdy, creative, educational, fun and weird. This doesn’t necessarily pertain to fitness per se, however in this case it does! I recently collaborated with local author John Green and his best friend Chris Waters in a YouTube project called 100 Days in which they embarked upon a journey of that length to improve their health and fitness. They call it their attempt at a “healthy mid-life crisis”. The filming has been over for some time, but at the time of the convention (Feb 25-26) the airing of the show was about halfway through at day 50. When they invited me to come out to Boston to put those brave nerds through a workout mimicking several of the exercises that they have been following along on the show I thought “How cool!”. But I had a challenge on my hands; no equipment. All I had was a large convention room and a mic set. When I got to Boston I wrote out a large amount (I think around 40) body-weight-only moves and planned to put the group through them twice or so, and that would be it. I wasn’t really sure what kind of draw this kind of event would have at such a convention since it was pretty far off of the spectrum from the other things going on at NerdCon. Boy, was I wrong!! As I left my hotel room in my ridiculously nerdy workout get-up, my phone starting blowing up with texts from the film crew of the 100 Days show. They were saying that the line for “Fitness for Nerds” was insanely long and that at least half of the people would have to be turned away. I was like “What?!” and a surge of nerves swarmed over me. When I turned the corner toward my convention room I saw the extremely long line that had formed probably an hour previously and I was amazed and, honestly, impressed. Walking by the hundreds of people donned in my fire-red tights, argyle socks, a big hair bow, I didn’t even blush as I’m sure this group knows I’m basing my outfit on one of John’s most popular YouTube videos called (of course) “Fitness for Nerds”. I couldn’t resist snapping a photo of the line and sent it to my family with a text reading “eek!”. Now, let’s be clear... the huge draw was wayyy more due to the fact that these people would be working out with John (literally their idol) and Chris (a new idol), than with me; but it was still pretty cool that I was going to be teaching the largest group in my life by far! And it was also kind of sad that many of those in line wouldn’t get the experience. I offered to do two 30 minute classes, but logistically it wouldn’t work. After filing in about 300 people and spacing them apart not even a foot, I had to rework some of my moves in my head so that no one would get sucker punched! The three of us were in the back room and John entered; the crowd erupted and my nerves once again soared...but in a good way. He introduced Chris and I and we all were instructed to perform on a raised platform. I had made a playlist for the workout and it started with the song by Weird Al Yankovic called “White and Nerdy”. They all erupted in laughter and the workout began! I led them all through the moves including jumping jacks, squats, planks, high knees, lunges, abs and a whole lot more. And I tell you what; they worked it!! Obviously for some it was harder than others but the effort was clearly there. Oh, and for those so-called turned away folks? They were in the hallway following along by the sound of my microphone; I saw a picture of the hall nerdfighters that was posted on twitter. That’s dedication :) It was truly awesome! Afterward was probably my favorite part though. John had to run off to get ready for a panel

so Chris and I hung around. We were swarmed with people that wanted to tell us how much the show had impacted them personally and inspired them with their own fitness journeys. Several told us how much weight they had lost, others had signed up for their first race, one girl told us that it helped her conquer an eating disorder. It was quite touching and such a great feeling that the show was not just for entertainment value but also to encourage people to try new things and improve their fitness, by watching John and Chris bravely do so as well. After taking dozens of selfies with my fellow nerds and even signing some autographs (lol), I headed out for a run in Boston with some familiar sights from previous marathons there. It was so peaceful and comforting. Just an awesome experience, and hands down the best of my career. Oh, and I LOVE Boston! Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Here’s a different technique! Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 7 in the right section of the middle row which contains 4-8. We will use a trick. There are only two places a 7 could go in the center section, somewhere beside the 9. This “future” 7 will allow us to eliminate three spaces in the right section! The three spaces in the middle row of the right section. Then, the 7 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 4. The 7 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the three spaces in the right-most column of the section. The only place left is directly to the right of the 8. You have learned a new technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Beer for a Broad Indiana craft brewers are honoring one of the state’s foremost female beer experts with a beer inspired by her work. Rita Kohn is a local playwright, documentarian and NUVO Newsweekly’s long time beer columnist. Elise Lockwood Servies of Scarlett Lane Brewing company worked with Broad Ripple Brewpub brewer Jonathon Mullens to create the recipe for the beer called “Hangin’ Tough.” “We thought about all the different parts of Rita, she’s very sweet, she’s also kind of sassy,” says Elise. “She’s got a great solid body and backbone and she’s always keeping all of us on our toes. We wanted to highlight those flavors in the beer, so that’s how we came up with an oatmeal pale ale made with passion fruit and lemon,” says Elise. On Wednesday, March 22nd, the Broad Ripple Brewpub will host a special tasting event featuring the new beer. It will also be available for a limited time on tap at Scarlet Lane Brewing in McCordsville and in 22oz bombers at select Big Red Liquor Stores. Proceeds from Hangin’ Tough go to fund Rita’s newest project, a play about diversity that takes the stage at the Indy Fringe Theater in May. Proceeds from the play will support a local youth group. by Brandt Carter As the World Turns in the Village It is not hard to see what is happening in Broad Ripple and feel the changing winds− new housing, another new bar, new restaurant, a new grocery store. The village is reflecting what is happening all over Indianapolis. Store fronts and buildings are transforming to welcome the next wave of businesses and entrepreneurs. This causes me to think back…way back… and realize very few businesses are here to stay. Growing up in Broad Ripple offered very few bars but many retail shops and businesses needed for daily life. I look back and realize every business owner, small, large or chain, should relish their time. If you also grew up in Indianapolis you will remember the department stores, now almost an endangered business. We have Macy’s, Penney’s and Sears. But do you recall the leader L.S. Ayres (Glendale) and meeting under the clock or lunching in the Tea Room downtown. We also had choices: H.P Wasson and Company, Wm H. Block, Co. (724 Broad Ripple Avenue and later Glendale) and L.Strauss and Company (Glendale - which for many years was for men only). They served the shoppers needs from dining, fine dressing, and bargain basement sales. From adults to children, housewares, notions, shoes, linens, furniture, most acquiring of our stuff in the 40s, 50s, and earlier 60s were from these monster department stores. We also had the fun shopping experience of the Five-and-Dimes. Although drugstores today have replaced some of the Five-and-Dimes offerings, the early stores were a cornucopia of merchandise. Do you remember Danner’s (Carrollton and Broad Ripple Avenue), S.S. Kresge’s, Woolworth’s, G. C. Murphy’s (corner of College and Broad Ripple Avenue). Most every child growing up could not

wait until they had the privilege to ride his or her bike to the dime store. Some even had soda fountain counters that could wrangle a nickel or quarter from the tightest customer−just one phosphate, soda, or sundae. There were many specialty stores that have long since closed. High-end stores like the Claypool Dress Shop, Abigail’s (Guilford and Broad Ripple Avenue), Stenzdale (6200 block of Carrollton), Roderick St. John (Glendale) often disappeared as their owners aged. Early discount stores like Jubilee City (53rd and Keystone), Zayre, Govco and Ayrway (L.S. Ayres’ discount store) have disappeared, but are the forerunners of the big box stores. Shopping Centers (first Lafayette Square and Glendale, later Castleton and Greenwood Malls) are having to reinvent themselves. The lesson from all this is that the world does not stand still. Retail is ever changing. What we enjoy today will be replaced by something new. Somehow the small retailer is still here, but in fewer numbers. These are the entrepreneurs that dream. My hope for the village is that we don’t lose the retail-mix of our businesses. I hope that bars and restaurants leave room for some shops that will entice the visitors in the village to stay, meander, and shop.
