Although a hit, the magazine showed no profit for the next 12 years. Michael Jordan has set the record for the number of cover appearances at 56, with the New York Yankees the most featured team. Four U.S. Presidents have made the cover — Kennedy, Ford, Reagan and Clinton. Every year, Sports Illustrated gives its “Sportsman of the Year” award. Shortly after that feat, the speakers were raised from 102 feet (31 m) above the field to 132 feet (40.2 m). In August of 1983, Yankee pitcher Dave Winfield threw a warm-up ball and accidentally struck and killed a seagull at the Toronto Blue Jays’ stadium. Agent Orange Payments Shift into High Gear All across the country, Veterans Benefits Administration claims personnel are working to process the mountain of paperwork as a result of the Nehmer case. The upshot of Nehmer v. U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is that the VA must re-adjudicate claims it denied in the past for the three newest presumptive illnesses for Agent Orange exposure. They are Ischemic Heart Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and certain leukemias. This covers claims filed or denied from Sept. 25, 1985 to Aug, 31, 2010, which is the date the service connection was established. Now that the VA is under a court-ordered gun, the process must be completed by Oct. 1, 2011. Here are some of the differences between a standard claim and one falling under this new ruling, taken from the training manual for new staff: Current: Goes by the claim date. Nehmer: No new claim need be filed if a presumptive illness appeared or was denied. Staff is to find the illness in your records and use that date. Current: Benefits do not go to the estate of a deceased veteran. Nehmer: Benefits survive the entitled member’s estate. Marriage license and birth certificates may be required. Current: Payments are made when possible. Nehmer: Payments must be made within 21 days of verification of entitlement. To learn more about the specifics, go to www. nvlsp.org, which is the national Veterans Legal Services Program. Search for “Nehmer Training Guide,” which includes a letter and the manual. You’ll find dates and locations in the manual, as well as a list of vessels documented to have been at the shore or inland. You’ll also find a list of documents that can be used as evidence, such as TDY orders, shore-leave orders in writing and other documentation that shows the veteran “physically set foot” in the country.

AUGUST EVENTS (continued):

To Crate or Not to Crate? By Samantha Mazzotta

Q: What’s your view of kennel cages? My wife hates the idea of using one to train our dog Sandy, but I disagree. What do you say? -- Jerry in Las Cruces, N.M.

A: I’m personally OK with the concept of crating (or “kennel cages”). It’s an effective way to housetrain a puppy (who won’t soil a sleeping or living area) and teaches it to stay comfortable and relaxed in a similar container, the travel crate, which is essential to traveling with your dog. However, I do see frequent instances where the crate is misused, with negative consequences for dog and owner alike. The crate also serves as a home or den for your

dog. So it always has to be seen by Sandy as a safe place to be, perhaps the safest place in the house for her. If you use the crate to punish Sandy, such as shutting her up in it when she’s being hyperactive or disobedient, she could associate it with negative feelings and avoid going into it.

I recommend you learn as much as you can about using the crate to train Sandy. The American Dog Trainers Network has a list of tips on furnishing the crate, getting her to accept it and using it as a positive training tool. Find the list here: http://www. inch.com/~dogs/cratetraining.html. It also includes important safety tips, such as always removing Sandy’s collar before putting her into the crate, and making sure she’s not left in an environment that’s too hot or freezing cold.

To Your Good Health By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Acupuncture for Pain Relief DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have never seen you address acupuncture. I have had a bad back for three months, have seen two doctors and have followed their instructions. I have taken medicines that ease the pain. My back isn’t as sore as it once was, but it still bothers me. Acupuncture has been suggested. What are your views on it? -- M.L. ANSWER: I have no misgivings about trying acupuncture for pain relief. The Chinese have used it for centuries. Any treatment that lasts that long must have some value. Fine needles are inserted into the skin at specific points and are left in place for 15 to 30 minutes. From time to time, the acupuncturist stimulates the needles. The American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society endorse acupuncture. A recent review article in the New England Journal of Medicine, a premier medical journal, also endorsed it. Who am I not to follow suit? Back pain strikes almost everyone at some point in life. The booklet on it discusses its causes and treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 303W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: It’s that time of year again -- the no-see-um season. I can feel a sharp sting when bitten. It goes away and then returns as a large swelling with incessant itching. What can I do to prevent this reaction? Others don’t react this bad. I also use DEET to deter these diabolical pests. Should I wash it off as soon as I get indoors? -- C.R. ANSWERS: No-see-ums got that name because they’re barely visible, only 1/16th of an inch. Dawn and dusk are their busiest hours. Avoidance is the best protection. The red welt you describe arises about 12 or more hours after the bite and can be as large as an inch in diameter. It does itch. DEET is the best repellent, but it’s not a 100 percent barrier for all users. Have you tried a higher concentration? Are you following label directions regarding when to reapply it? When you get back home, wash treated skin with soap and water. Also, you can spray your clothes with permethrin. It will give you additional protection. Wear long slacks tucked into your socks and longsleeved tops. As for the itch, antihistamines are suggested. I admit they don’t work for everyone. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I think I may have the illness where a person pulls out clumps of hair. I’m not sure of the name. I find I do this after I have caffeine. I have been off caffeine for years, and I do not pull my hair out. I thought this might be helpful to others. -- K.H. ANSWER: The name of the condition is trichotillomania (TRICK-oh-TILL-uh-MAYknee-uh). Between 4 million and 11 million Americans have it. It’s called an impulse disorder. I hadn’t heard about a caffeine connection. If this holds true for others, they will deeply appreciate your advice.

home. The official cause of death was listed as coronary arrhythmia. The King’s funeral was held at his home, with a processional to Forest Hill Cemetery following the service. More than 80,000 people lined the route. • Henry Leland founded the Cadillac Automobile Company in August of 1902, naming it after his ancestor, French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who founded the city of Detroit in 1701.

• When William Gray’s wife became very ill in 1888, he was in desperate need of a telephone to call a doctor. There were very few phones in Hartford, Connecticut, and Gray ran to a neighboring factory, begging to use theirs, but was told it was not for public use. When the owners finally gave in to his pleading, the doctor was reached, and Mrs. Gray recovered. This incident spurred Gray, a machinist, to invent a coin-operated telephone. He received his patent in August of 1889, and the first payphone was installed at a local bank. By 1902, the United States was home to 81,000 payphones.

• The first and last atomic bombings in history took place in August of 1945. The United States dropped the first nuclear weapon, known as “Little Boy,” on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6 and the second, called “Fat Man,” on Nagasaki three days later. Fatality estimates for Hiroshima were 90,000 to 160,000 people and 60,000 to 80,000 for Nagasaki.

• On an August morning in 1907, Seattle residents shopped at the Pike Place Market for the first time. This famous street market came into being because citizens were tired of being overcharged for their produce. Avoiding the middleman, farmers brought their wares to the corner of First Avenue and Pike Street, and were met by more than 10,000 shoppers. Today the Market’s nine acres house more than 200 full-time businesses and 190 craftspeople, as well as 100 farmers who rent space by the day. The Market is also home to 300 apartments. It’s now one of Washington state’s most popular tourist attractions, drawing 10 million visitors annually.

• We’ve all heard of the Cy Young Award, but how much do we really know about Cy Young? Denton T. (Cy) Young pitched his first major league baseball game in August of 1890 for the Cleveland Spiders. He was the first to pitch a perfect game and was responsible for many other records, some of which still stand. Young has the most career wins (511) and the most innings pitched (7,355) during his 22-year pro ball career. The Cy Young Award, which honors the season’s best pitcher, was established in 1956, the year after his death.

• The United States’ first official census commenced on the first Monday in August of 1790.

• During the first week of August every year, the community of Sturgis, South Dakota, population 6,400, hosts the Black Hills Classic Motorcycle Rally. Begun in 1938 with nine bikers in a half-mile race, the event now draws hundreds of thousands of participants. Record-setting attendance was at the rally’s 60th anniversary in 2000, when more than 600,000 bikers cruised into Sturgis. In 1976, the average amount spent per person was $50. Today that figure tops $1,000. The community’s businesses earn 95 percent of their annual revenue during this one week, and the state’s coffers are filled with about $1 million in sales tax alone.

traditional to celebrate a wedding with five events. The first is the engagement party, during which the bride-to-be changes clothes several times. When the bride and groom sign the marriage contract there is another party, again with numerous changes of clothing by the bride. The day before the wedding there is a henna party, during which the bride and others are painted with elaborate designs that are thought to ward off evil spirits. The reception takes place after the wedding, and guests are often given five almond pieces, each piece symbolizing one of the sacred wedding wishes: health, happiness, wealth, longevity and fertility. Seven days after the wedding is the final celebratory event, known as sabaa, which is for women only and is analogous to the wedding shower we have in the West. • The town of North Pole, Alaska, is actually 1,700 miles south of the planet’s geographical North Pole. *** Thought for the Day: “The nice thing about egotists is that they don’t talk about other people.” -- Lucille S. Canned Vegetables Are Better Than None Did you know it’s possible to suffer from malnutrition even if you’re eating three times a day? That can happen easily to seniors who find it hard to be motivated to cook and end up just snacking throughout the day. A changing sense of smell and taste, loneliness after the death of a spouse, medications and boredom are a few of the reasons we don’t eat as well as we should. But with a little ingenuity, it’s easy to fix fast, easy meals you’ll actually eat! Here are some ideas: • Use your slow cooker. All the ingredients are assembled in the pot in the morning, and are ready by dinnertime. • The variety of cookbooks on the market is amazing. Investigate cookbooks that offer recipes with only five ingredients, diabetic recipes, meals that take less than 20 minutes to prepare, and prepared foods combined with your own easy additions. • Double the amounts you prepare, and freeze the rest for days when you really don’t want to cook at all. Be sure to label the container and use it within a few weeks. • If income allows, consider ordering one week of a plan where meals are delivered to your door. While the cost would be prohibitive to do this constantly, having a few meals in the freezer would be handy for those times you don’t want to cook. • Take a cooking class and learn steps to fix quick meals. • Ask your doctor for a referral to a nutritionist if you need help with creating a menu, portion sizes and nutritional values. If you’re truly stuck in a not-cooking rut, in a pinch, remember: Canned fruit and vegetables are better than none at all. Peanut butter on crackers with a banana offers nutrition. It takes only a few minutes to scramble eggs, add cheese and make toast.

Don’t reserve the grill just for dinner. Assemble these delicious appetizer paninis and make them hot and crunchy on the grill. 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 (1 pound each) sweet onions, thinly sliced Salt and pepper 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves 8 (1/2-inch thick) center slices country-style bread 4 ounces soft fresh goat cheese 1. In nonstick 12-inch skillet, heat oil on medium one minute. Stir in onions, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper; cover and cook 15 minutes or until very soft, stirring occasionally. Uncover and cook 15 to 25 minutes longer or until onions are golden brown, stirring frequently. Stir in thyme; remove pan from heat. 2. Prepare outdoor grill for direct grilling on medium. 3. Meanwhile, assemble panini: Place 4 slices bread on work surface. Spread one-fourth of goat cheese on each slice and top with onefourth of onion mixture. Top with remaining bread slices. 4. Place 2 panini on hot grill grate. Place heavy skillet (preferably cast iron) on top of panini, press down, and cook 7 to 8 minutes or until bread is toasted and browned on both sides, turning over once. Repeat with remaining two panini. Cut in halves or quarters to serve. Does Your Septic Tank Need Pumping Out? Q: How often do I need to have my septic tank pumped out? I keep getting calls and postcards from a local company saying I have to do it every year. -- Jim S., via email A: How often your septic tank actually needs to be pumped out varies depending on the size of the tank, the number of people in your home, and local or state regulations regarding septic tank maintenance. First things first, however. How long has it been since your tank was last pumped out? If it’s been more than six years, or you honestly can’t remember, it’s probably time. If you know how long it’s been since the last cleaning, the size of the tank will help you figure out when next to have it pumped out. For example, if you have a 500-gallon tank, and your home has four residents, the tank should be cleaned once per year. If there are only two residents in a home with a 500-gallon tank, a cleaning is only needed about every two and a half years. (The attached chart, courtesy of Cruse Wastewater, has more details.) The purpose of pumping out the tank is to remove solid waste, or sludge, which builds up over time. Too much sludge reduces the efficiency of the septic system and can block or damage drain pipes, causing a backup into your house (ugh!) or damage to the drain field through which liquid waste is safely disbursed.

Stressed About an Aging or Disabled Loved One?

Even with a cleaning schedule in place, once a year you should have a technician come out and check the sludge level of the tank. If the sludge level is too high -- past the halfway mark -- a cleaning is needed, along with an evaluation of the system to make sure everything is working correctly. Finally, a check of local and state regulations concerning septic tanks can save you some grief in the long run. Some municipalities mandate more frequent tank cleaning due to groundwater quality issues, and at least one county in Florida is requiring residents to completely replace tanks that are more than 40 years old.

• To clean out the drawers of my husband’s tool cabinet without disturbing the tools, I tucked a knee-high panty hose leg over my vacuum cleaner wand. Most things stayed put, but the one or two small pieces of hardware that got sucked up were easily retrieved. I did this on his workbench too. I picked up all the dust and shavings along with the stray pieces of hardware. I pulled the hardware out of the hose leg, and they were in a tidy pile for him to put away. -- U.L. in Kansas • Ripen a green tomato by wrapping it in a sheet of newspaper or placing it in a small, plain paper bag. Leave it on the counter, and check it daily until ripe. • To keep ice cream from dripping out of the bottom of a cone, just place a small marshmallow or a piece of marshmallow in the bottom of the cone before you fill it. • Our family loves to make our own pizza, and we purchase dough from a pizzeria. On pizza nights, I pick up the dough first thing on the way home from work. I get it close to where I work and let it sit in a bowl in the car while I pick up the kids and drive home. It takes about 45 minutes, so it’s risen nicely while we’ve been on the go. -- E.F. in New York • If you’ve just purchased an expensive electronic item, take the packaging to a recycling center rather than advertise your purchase by putting the box at the curb. If you aren’t able to take it somewhere, cut the box into uniform pieces and bind them together, nonprinted side facing out.
