Cornwall Simmental Club Report by Bridget Olds - Secretary

e began 2017 with our annual dinner in January at The Plume of Feathers, Mitchell where members were joined by family and friends to enjoy a convivial meal. February featured an ignominious defeat by the South Devon Club who filled the first three places in the quiz challenge renewal overseen by our chairman, Jim Buckland in the role of quizmaster and ably adjudicated by his wife Jean. March featured the first Cornwall Club Sale at Exeter market where there was difficult trade for bulls but a 100% clearance rate for females. Killiworgie Snowdrop’s Evita and her 6 month old bull calf topped the sale at 2400 gns. The demand for females on the day exceeded supply and the Club was heartened by the number of people attending the sale and showing interest in the Simmental breed. A huge thank you must go to the breeders that supported our first venture (Bolankin, Bosahan, Cwarre, Heywood, Killiworgie, Kurlycoat, Skylark and Starline).

Bosahan Highfalutin sold for 2000 gns

Our hopes for an impressive Commercial Day in April were unfortunately thwarted and finally abandoned for the year. However, plans are well under way for 2018. In May, Cornwall breeders supported the Worcester Society sale offering half of the bulls and a third of the females forward on the day. Entries included cattle from Killiworgie (Male Champion and Reserve and highest female price of the sale with Killiworgie Hope), Chegwidden (Female Champion), Bosahan (Reserve Female Champion), Crowgey and Kurlycoat.

Worcester Sale Male & Female Champions – Killiworgie Heroe and Chegwidden Bambino’s Hettie

During the first week of June attention is centred on our county show at Wadebridge. This year Gordon Clark (Broombrae ,Scotland) took on the damp task of judging the eight classes, respective specials and championships. Local breeders with entries forward included Sowenna, Kurylcoat, Chegwidden, Killiworgie and Bosahan. Sterling emerged as Female and Overall Champion with Sterling Celia’s FiFi who also took the Inter-breed Best Beef Cow. Cornish breeders will miss the annual Macmillan challenge for honours at our most prestigious show. The British Simmental section also featured in the Interbreed Beef Pairs honours with Reserve Junior Champion Sterling Barcardi’s Hope and Male Champion Killiworgie Hornblower. Cornwall herd class winners were Jake Gregory - Sterling Gino, Piers Hawkey - Sowenna Galaxy and Viv Hall - Chegwidden Hercules (Reserve Male Champion). A big thank must go to all the members and supporters involved in preparing, running and clearing up the hospitality tent and our generous sponsors.
