little over two weeks since the commencement of the Russian invasion on Ukraine, the world is wondering what the outcome of it all will be. Ukraine- a seemingly little country in comparison to superpower Russia- has put up a fight and resistance greater than the gigantic size of its nemesis. So far, Ukraine has survived- at the cost of 474 civilian lives, 2 million people fleeing the country and a steadfast leader surviving it all despite threats and assassination attempts. How will the war end- is there a light at the end of this tunnel? Or is the Ukrainian country forever forsaken?

What does Russia want? The first invasion from Russia on Ukrainian airports and military headquarters followed a declaration from Putin about how Russia felt ‘constantly threatened’ by modern Ukraine. All of these happen under the label of ‘special military operation’ and Putin refuses to acknowledge that the events that he has set into motion in fact constitute a war. Behind the veil of what Putin is telling the world lies the facts on what Russia truly wants. Is it a response to Ukraine’s intention to join the European Union (EU) or North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)? From the events that have transpired so
far, it seems as though Russia is attempting to overthrow Ukrainian democracy and take control of their geographical neighbour. At this juncture, it must be clarified that what the Russian people want is different from what Putin and the Kremlin want. There has been an uproar from Russians all over the world expressing their disdain towards Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and disapproval towards the rising civilian casualties.
