Emphatic Victory for Leaders Manchester MANCHESTER Handball Club extended their lead at the top of the English League’s Northern Section to five points after securing an emphatic 29-17 victory over hosts Nottingham on Saturday. Four goals before half time from Thomas Lasek helped Manchester to an 11-7 lead at the break, and he went on to add another three and finish on seven goals. Also on seven goals was his team-mate Karim Hammache, who scored six of them in the second half to help Manchester open up a 12-goal lead and secure their ninth win in ten league games so far this season.

Cedric Biguenet scored nine times for Nottingham University, but with the next best player scoring just two, it was not enough for victory. In other Northern Section action last weekend, Liverpool boosted their bid for the end of season play-offs with a 27-18 win over Manchester University. With Manchester University fielding a weakened team due to exams, in-form Liverpool started as favourites for the clash – and they did not disappoint.

After a quick-fire three goals from Liverpool, Manchester seemed to get a grip on the match and pulled back to a 3-3 draw after 10 minutes. In this phase of the match both defences had the upper hand. Manchester did well with their aggressive 5:1 defence while the Liverpool 6:0 defence proved effective against the strong line players from Manchester. Slowly however, Liverpool gained an advantage and pulled away goal by goal to a 7-3 lead.

Frustration set in amongst the Manchester ranks culminating in a red card for bad language after a refereeing decision, and by half time Liverpool had gained an eight-goal advantage at 14-6. With their limited resources it was always unlikely that Manchester University would be able to stage a comeback, but they never gave up fighting. The second half was an evenly balanced affair with Liverpool only winning it 1312, and the final result of 1827 was a fair reflection of the day's match.

Regional Championships England Handball Seek Prove a Handballing Hit Assistant Coaches HUNDREDS of young handballers from across the country have taken part in this year’s EHA Regional Handball Championships, and the popular competition reached a climax last weekend. The West Midlands team were crowned the boys champions, while Merseyside won the girls competitions after a series of superb matches in the finals at the Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton. Teams from across the country took part, demonstrating the amazing growth of handball in the last few years – something that looks set to continue

with the appointment of handball development officers in locations across the country. Regions represented were London, Bedfordshire, West Midlands, Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside and Cheshire. In the boys events, West Midlands just pipped a strong Cheshire outfit to the title, while there was a tie for third spot between Merseyside and Greater Manchester. While Merseyside won the girls event, Cheshire played well to take second, and Greater Manchester were third.

ENGLAND Handball has successfully appointed a team of performance coaches, but they’re now looking to appoint assistant performance coaches to help drive forward their Four-Year Player Pathway project. The EHA is aiming to develop a full complement of national sides in all EHFrecognised age groups by 2013, and this latest set of appointments will play an important part in achieving that. The assistant coach positions are on a fixed term basis until August 31 2012, and will be subject to a six-month probationary period and regular

reviews by the National Performance Group. Although voluntary, the positions offer an exciting chance for coaches with high aspirations of their own capabilities and ambitions. The successful candidates will attend world class coaching courses and seminars, and will have the chance to work with the GB Olympic Programme in developing the best English players. Closing date for applications in February 5 with interviews taking place on February 13, so for more details about the posts, please go to www.EnglandHandball.com

Ayr, winning 36-19 after running away with the game in the second half. It took Glasgow a while to get into full stride, with Kriss Szulc scoring most of their goals. But they improved their scoring accuracy in the second half and scored many, including some impressive fast breaks against a tiring Ayr defence, who had few substitutes to call on. Joint top scorers were Szulc with 12 for Ayr, while Danos Sagias also netted a dozen times for Glasgow.
