Criteria for Awards For the competition, our awards process has two categories of winners. Vote purchasers will choose a “people's choice” couple, and judges will vote for the “best technique / artistry” couple.

What are the rules? Eight couples will vie for two trophies. Each of the judges has the freedom to judge the overall performance of the dancers based upon the following criteria: PRESENTATION AND MUSICAL INTERPRETATION: Dancing with confidence and charisma, creating interest in the performance, regardless of the style. Responding to the music by taking the dance beyond a mere combination of patterns. TEAMWORK/CONNECTION: An appropriate and confident lead combined with response without fault or hesitation; the attractive give-and-take of a couple dancing as a balanced partnership. TECHNIQUE: The command of the fundamental elements of dance; the evident ease and clean execution of the performance (especially of more difficult elements).

TIMING/RHYTHM: That refers to the appropriate matching of body motions and footwork to the meters and rhythms of the music. Consistency in timing throughout entire routine and understanding or interpretation of music during the dance are valued. SHOWMANSHIP AND OVERALL PRESENTATION: Dancers will be reviewed to see if they create an atmosphere of excitement, and promote a positive audience reaction through delivery of confident execution. Judges, using these criteria, will assign each dancing couple points for each of the two dances. The couple with the most points after the two dances wins the Judges' Trophy.

Guest Judges

Volunteers and Donations Dance Committee:

The Honorable Ellen Cohen, Houston City Council Member, District C: Her illustrious background includes more than a decade of service as the Executive Director for the American Jewish Committee, followed by President and CEO of the Houston Area Women’s Center for 18 years! She holds numerous positions on boards, including the American Cancer Society. She is a former president of Leadership Houston and the Medical Center Board. She has ably served Houston and Texas in the Texas Legislature as State Representative, District 134, and she continues serving as a community leader as Houston City Council Member, District C.

Ziggy Gruber, Owner of Kenny & Ziggy's: The New York Times said it best: “Delis aren't common in Houston, and good ones are especially rare. This one is the real deal.” They were talking about the award-winning Kenny and Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen, owned by Ziggy Gruber, a third generation ‘deliman.’ Ziggy began learning the business as a child from his grandfather, Max, and other family members. To further his education in the culinary arts, Ziggy attended the Cordon Bleu in London, graduating at the top of his class! He and his family have owned highly rated delis in New York and Los Angeles, and lucky for us, Ziggy brought his expertise to Houston! No wonder the Houston Chronicle, Houston Business Journal, Houston Press and many others rave about Kenny and Ziggy’s food! Dancing with the CBS Stars is honored to have this Houston icon as a judge for our dance competition.

Sonia Jupiter, owner of Sonia's World of Dance: Sonia’s specialty is helping you, the beginner, to let loose your dancing spirit, whether you are interested in elegant Ballroom dances like: Foxtrot, Tango, Waltz, and Swing; Hot Latin dances like: Salsa, Merengue, Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba, Paso Doble, Argentine Tango, and Jive; Country-Western dances like: Two Step, Polka, Country Waltz, and Jitterbug. How about Energetic Hip Hop and even exotic belly-dancing? Try their private or group dance lessons; soon you will be dancing confidently and enjoying those events more than you ever imagined, just as our eight dancing couples did in their preparations for tonight‘s competition!
