A MESSAGE FROM

THE ARTS MINISTER

I welcome the many writers and leading thinkers who are heading to Brisbane Writers Festival 2014 to share their passion for words and ideas with Queenslanders. Brisbane Writers Festival hosts an array of authors and industry heavyweights who share their passion for the written word against the backdrop of the beautiful Cultural Precinct. Over the five days and nights of the festival, we will hear from some of Australia’s most esteemed and respected writers including featured guests Helen Garner, David Malouf and Andy Griffiths. International literary stars will also take part, such as Dave Eggers, Karen Joy Fowler and the 2014 Arts Queensland Poet in Residence Warsan Shire. Festival highlights include the ever-popular Festival Club, set against the backdrop of the beautiful Cultural Precinct, and the Well-Played program celebrating narrative and games with appearances from ABC TV’s Good Game hosts Bajo and Hex. The Queensland Government supports writing and reading across a broad range of initiatives such as the Brisbane Writers Festival, the Queensland Writers Centre, Queensland Poetry Festival and University of Queensland Press, along with many other literary initiatives across the state. Brisbane Writers Festival will be buzzing with prose, poetry and plenty of words and ideas. I invite you to come along and join us.

A MESSAGE FROM

THE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR

CULTURAL PARTNERS

Not long ago I chanced upon a quote by Nietszche that is favoured by one of the writers attending this year’s Festival:

Brisbane Powerhouse Museum of Brisbane Queensland Museum and Sciencentre The Wheeler Centre

“It is not enough to prove something, one has also to seduce or elevate people to it.”

DONORS

Between Twitter and Facebook and a constant onslaught of words and images from all media, it seems we hardly lack for conversation or ideas. But to inspire, to captivate, to change our stubborn minds or our cautious hearts or to motivate us into action, well, that is an art and one increasingly precious in the age of social media. Life is too immense and complex to hold inside our heads, so we write and tell stories to make sense of the world and to connect our worlds to those of others. From 3−7 September, BWF gathers together bright and curious minds – writers, artists, thinkers, innovators – for a city-wide conversation of stories and ideas. With more than 200 artists from around the world, we have crafted an enticing menu of events and experiences for you to explore and enjoy. Welcome to Brisbane’s glorious annual celebration of words and ideas. Come along, be inspired, and meet the storytellers and wordsmiths who seduce and elevate us.

We thank Miriam McGoldrick, Mrs Kay Bryan and the many other members of the community who generously contribute to Brisbane Writers Festival.
