TUDENTS at Bedminster Down in south Bristol are celebrating GCSE success – after half of all students achieved five grades A*- C. It was a record year for the school’s English department with 86 per cent of all students gaining an A* - C. Meanwhile more than 90 per cent achieved A*-C in religious studies, French, art textiles and child development. A* and A grades up by a third on last year to 14.5 per cent. Lauren Carey picked up a grade A* for every subject that counts towards progress * scores. She said: “I was looking for Bs today so I couldn’t be more delighted with my grade A*s. “Now I can choose a wide range of subjects for A level thanks to the support I’ve had at Bedminster Down.”

Bedminster Down head teacher Gary Schlick said: “I couldn’t be more pleased with the efforts from both students and staff that have helped to deliver this excellent set of exam results for Bedminster Down students. Every student has a path mapped for their future to start further study, work or apprenticeships. “Later this year parents will be able to look at our ‘progress 8’ scores alongside other schools to help them assess how we made sure every student fulfilled their potential. I think this will highlight our strengths as a school, continuing the excellent progress made in our partner primary schools. “Going forward our successfully piloted ‘ready to learn’ behaviour programme will be rolled out which will ensure learning is at the forefront of everything that we do.”

■ Chloe Warfield, 16, of Bedminster, is looking forward to studying hairdressing at Hengrove College after picking up one five C grades and one B grade. Chloe said: “I was really nervous ahead of getting my results. But I am really happy to get the grades I needed to do what I wanted to do.” Mum Suzie went with Chloe to collect her results. She said: “I am very proud of her.”
