No Jimna Joy …butTestandTunetogetreboot

The President’s Report

Well it’s certainly been a mixed beginning to 2024 for the Brisbane Sporting Car Club. We’ve had two postponements due to weather, but also two (soon to be three hopefully) successful events. Congratulations to Iain Robertson and his team for putting together a sensational first round of the Kickass Products Motorsport Australia Queensland Rally Championship. Thank you to Shaun Gill and APX Suspension for their sponsorship and thank you to all of the organisers and the officials for helping to make for a brilliant event.

Congratulations also to Laurie Garth and his team for putting together a successful Garth’s Gallop social run. We were very happy to see it get up and running despite its earlier postponement.

Speaking of postponements: to say that the last minute postponement of Jimna was a disappointment would be an understatement. Sometimes it’s not until the rain comes that you realise how much work has been put in. As Clerk of Course, I’d like to share with you how it all unfolded.

There were several road trips to Jimna in the months before; first to check if the roads we wanted to use were still in good condition (and they were); then to write a new road book, setup notes and to carry out course checks. In the week leading up to the event the weather was looking ok. The roadbooks were printed; Margaret put all the competitor and official packs together and the trailer was loaded and ready to go to Jimna.

Early Friday morning things were looking positive and the forecast for Saturday was looking ok so I headed to Jimna with a trailer full of gear. We met John Coleman in Kilcoy with the communication trailer and the weather looked to be clearing a little, so we headed up the range to Jimna. The closer we got to the Jimna Base Camp the heaver the rain got. It was not looking good. Arriving at Jimna we were met by Belinda & Tony Howard and Kevin Lefever, all with a look of concern. With some crews and officials due to arrive later in the day we need to decide quickly if we had an event.

We decided to go and have a look at the stages as well as the oval we were to use for the service park. The two stages were actually in quite good shape considering the amount of rain that had fallen that morning, which was about 30mm between 7 and 10am. As it turned out they got another 40mm up until 2pm.

There were several things we had to consider if we were to run the event: First and foremost was the safety of our officials in the field. Could we get them into the stages, and more importantly could we get them out if things got worse? Could we get medical and recovery in if required and what damage would we be doing to the roads and service park? Taking all that into account we had no option but to cancel.

Our next job was to advise the competitors and officials of our decision. Event secretary Judy Foster contacted the competitors while in Jimna we had 5 mobiles going calling every official on the list; some of which were already on their way After working through the lists, we only had 2 officials turn up at Jimna. Job done and by around lunch time we were on the way home.

A lot of time, effort and money go into putting these events on for our members and competitors. A big THANK YOU to everyone involved that helped to put the Test and Tune together.

On to some good news. We intend to run a Test and Tune on Saturday the 20th of April. As the date is now available, we felt it would be an excellent opportunity to make up for the postponement, but also a timely opportunity to give crews a proper forest run, with pacenoting, in preparation for the upcoming autumn and winter.

Team Kickass take top spot in QRC 1

QRC 1 out of the gates in fine form. If this event was anything to go by, we’re in for an exciting season for Queensland rallying. A windy Friday night led into a Saturday of fresh breezes; not only there to signal the approach of the cooler months, but also to clear the dust for eager crews and officials alike. A solid, high-quality field of 30 crews signed up for the event, which promised to be an action packed start to the season

The decision to run a split location event proved successful, with the morning briefings and morning stages being run out of Nanango and then the day finishing with a well-attended winner’s circle celebration in the evening at Manumbar Campdraft Grounds. With 140 volunteer officials in place for the start of the morning loop, the event got underway and on time.

From the first lap of Paradise Ian Menzies / Robert McGowan’s Evo set a strong pace of 12m04s for the 18.69km stage, with the Subaru Ryan Williams / Brad Jones right on their bumper with a 5 second gap. Following close behind was another Subaru, that of Erik Johnsson/ Larisa Biggar, with a mere three seconds separating cars 1 & 3.

Running Paradise three times gave the more experienced crews plenty of opportunity to ‘learn’ the stage and that was reflected in the improvement in stage times over the subsequent two runs. Overall there were consistent and ever improving times across the field, meaning that by the end of Heat 1, the overall gap between the first four cars was less than a minute over 56.7km.

Second to third place was separated by only four seconds, which was less than 1/10th of a second per kilometre.

Heat 2 saw crews head to an all-time favourite piece of QLD shire road: Western Branch Road. This 13.34 kilometre stretch of road saw the top tier competitors averaging speeds just above 110km/hr, with the fastest nine competitors finishing the stage in under eight minutes. From there, competitors went over to complete two laps of roads in the Elgin Vale and Gallangowan State Forests, ultimately finishing in the late afternoon at the Manumbar Campdraft Grounds.

In the end the Team Kickass Products Evo of Glenn Brinkman and new codriver Jacci Hughes came out on top. They started relatively conservatively, but by the end of the day the team were putting in some blisteringly quick times. The quickest 2WD crew were arguably the favourites, Clay Badenoch and Jimmy Wilson.

The WSC Novice Series honours went to Tyler Broughton and Brett Hausmann in their very first event. The Acworth Recruitment Clubman Series (at time of print), is still to be decided. Lastly for the Junior category, honours went to the Christensen boys in their Excel.

Sadly, as is common in the first round of the season, attrition was relatively high, as for many crews this was their first run in anger for several months. The biggest retirement shock of the day was title contenders and leaders throughout the day; Williams and Jones. Their Subaru succumbing to a loose rag in their engine bay. The NSW crew of Arthur and Bonser sadly went out in dramatic, yet determined fashion struggling up the hill to the end of Kandanga on three wheels They completed the stage, but sadly not the event.

Whilst the itinerary was tight, the challenge of an all-daylight schedule, that used widely dispersed areas of forest, was successful. The next event on the QRC calendar is the Coffs Coast Rally in May. We look forward to the event and wish all competitors, especially BSCC members the best of luck!

NEW DATE AND NEW LOOK FOR BSCC TEST AND TUNE

The Brisbane Sporting Car Club’s annual preseason Test and Tune has been a staple of the Queensland rally calendar for many years now. In the past, big names including Alister McRae and Tony Quinn have taken the opportunity to dust off the Christmas cobwebs in the forests north-west of Brisbane. Sadly this year, at the eleventh hour, the weather got the club once again, leading to the postponement of the February event.

However, from those soaking ashes rises an innovative new event. A Test and Tune with a twist, to be held on the 20th of April. Utilising a 10km, proper forest stage near Jimna, the new Test and Tune event will be one giant hands-on pacenoting class which will actually begin with a theory session at the BSCC Clubrooms at 7pm the Wednesday night before the event. Worth noting also is that the theory night is not exclusive to the competing crews and anyone can attend.

Adding to the uniqueness of the event, entries will be capped at 20 crews with preference given to crews with limited pacenoting experience. This however doesn’t mean novices exclusively. The reason for this is due to the mentoring system that the club has organised. The crews will have access to a team of the state’s most experienced codriver minds; led by the highly decorated Larisa Biggar, who is wrapt to be involved, “We all started somewhere. I remember doing one of these when I started, so time to pay it forward”.

The 2022 ARC Production Cup winning codriver will lead the theory night on the Wednesday and then on the Saturday, Larisa and her team of codrivers and drivers, including Ryan Williams and reigning QRC champion, Ian Menzies, will be getting into the recce cars, with the crews, to guide them through the ins and outs of pacenoting.

The Saturday event will begin at 8am with recce, then the action will be begin at 11am and run until 4pm with crews getting multiple passes to hone their skills. The service park will be run out of the Jimna Base Camp recreational facility.

“Pacenoted events aren’t common in Queensland, so when Rally Queensland rolls around, which is also a QRC round, many of the local competitors aren’t quite as prepared as they’d like” , BSCC President, Tony Kabel explains. “We figured this would be a unique and innovative opportunity to help grow the sport and foster Queensland’s future codriving talent”.

With the date, originally slated for the Coffs Coast Rally, becoming available the club rallied the troops to come up with an event at short notice to make up for the earlier postponement. It also serves as a timely opportunity to give less experienced crews a proper forest run, with pacenoting, in preperation for the upcoming autumn and winter events.

Supplementary Regulations are out and entries are open now.

NOVICE nine

With Tyler Broughton

We ask a QRC Novice 9 questions about the season ahead.

Tyler Broughton and Codriver Brett Haussmann just successfully finished the APX Suspension Manumbar Rally with a win in the WSC Novice Class.

We ask Tyler the Novice 9, as he begins his Novice journey.

1. What got you into rallying?

TYLER BROUGHTON:

I have grown up around rallying from a very young age I have known Stewart Reid for as long as I can remember and have always followed him around to various rallies from a young age with my parents and then into my adult life to now where I now work for Stewart at SR Automotive and have been further involved in the rallying as the service crew in both Australia and New Zealand and decided it was time to get behind the steering wheel and give it a go

“Definitelythinkmy epastinvolvementand xperienceinrallying fromtheservicecrew sidehashelpedwith thefirstevent competing.”

2. How has it been so far?

I have only competed in one event so far but it has been quite a good and enjoyable experience. Definitely think my past involvement and experience in rallying from the service crew side has helped with the first event competing.

3. What are your rallying goals?

To have fun and enjoy it And keep the car on the road

4. What is your vehicle?

1999 Hyundai Excel

5. Do you know its history?

Purchased the vehicle late last year Vehicle came from Mount gambier in SA Has only done 2 rallies and a handfull of Khanacross events with the previous owner

6. Who is your Motorsport idol? SVG

7. Is there a particular event you’d love to compete in one day?

Otago rally. Having been over to it a few times the roads and atmosphere are amazing and would love to one day compete in the event

8. Anyone you’d like to give a shout-out to?

My parent's for their support My navigator Brett; navigator's are the biggest unsung heroes in rallying Stewart Reid, for all of his help with car preparation advice and driving tips

9. Lastly, if had to choose between $1 million and your dream rallycar, what colour would the rallycar be? Red because red goes faster

BUSY COUPLEOF MONTHS FORBSCC MEMBERS

BSCC journeyman, RYAN PRESTON, is back with Tom Clarke for another tilt at the ARC. Catch the boys in action at the Rally of Canberra. Also headed to the nation’s capital are JUSTIN NORTHAGE and SCOTT MUHLING in the Lotus, JOHN McHUGH in his ae86, SHANE and SYLVIE GARNER in their GC8, and ZACH HEGDÉ and NICOLA HOEY in the Retromotive Porsche. NICK REID, will once again be joining Josh Weidman for an assault on the ARC Junior Cup in their new Subaru. The ARC kicks off in April.

TOM DERMODY is back in the red rocket Escort for another crack at the Shannons Rally of the Heartland. ROD REID, entrusted with Ross Perry’s Swedish missile, is taking son NICK REID to South Australia as well. On the same journey is GARY DUTTON. The Dutton Datto will also seat another BSCC member: RAY PRIEST. MIKE BAILEY and IAN WHITEHEAD will be there in the trusty GTiR, as will the aforementioned Retromotive Porsche crew. We look forward to hearing tales from the Heartland.

TRISTAN CARRIGAN, the Magna manhandler, is off to NZ for a crack at the famous Otago Rally in a Jeff Judd prepared Escort. He’s also taking fellow Inverted Motorsports teammate and BSCC member, NEILL WOOLLEY, along for the ride. ED MULLIGAN, is another member travelling across the Tasman for the Otago. He’ll be seated in his well-proven BMW beside, CLAIRE BUCCINI.

The ever active, NEILL WOOLLEY is also codriving for former QRC Champion, Mark Griffith in the Australian Tarmac Championship for 4 rounds this year.

Heading across the ditch for a very different reason is STEWART REID. The former QRC champion is running a fullprogram in the NZRC at the wheel of a Hayden Paddon prepared Mitsubishi Mirage AP4.

Lastly, in some of the biggest Australian rally news of late, ANTHONY McLOUGHLIN, will be joining ‘22 ARC Champion, Lewis Bates as the pair compete in Rally de Portugal in May. This will also mark their debut with the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2, which we will finally get to see at Rally Queensland.

The Brisbane Sporting Car Club’s second event for 2024, Garth’s Gallop, took place on Sunday the 24th of March. Originally scheduled for the end of January, a rain bomb put an end to that. Despite another wet threat, a strong turnout of cars attended the March rerun.

The brainchild of newly inducted QRC Hall of Famer, Laurie Garth, the navigational social run took participants along 120+ kilometres of the Lockyer Valley’s finest roads From its starting point at BP Haigslea, the course of the non-competitive fun run wound its way through the valley to its final destination of Grantham, just outside of Toowoomba

To keep entrants engaged throughout, a set of directional challenges and entertaining trivia questions, were added Designed to not only keep the brains working, but to help prove crew ’ s passage along the correct route

Theeventwas thebrainchildof newlyinducted QRCHallof Famer,Laurie Garth.

21 starters took off from the BP Haigslea (inset) and all but one crew made it to the Floating Café in Grantham Full points went to Paula and Darcy and a special mention to John for managing to only get one wrong, despite having no navigator

Sadly one vehicle was taken off on a tow truck This was thankfully only due to a mechanical issue.

All in all the event was very well received After the success of Jim’s Jaunt and Garth’s Gallop, we look forward to the next well alliterated, non-competitive social run; hopefully in the near future Thank you to Laurie Garth and Judy Foster and all the participants for helping to run such a great event
