Exercise can become boring when you do the same thing every day, so when given the opportunity to roadtest some of Brisbane’s toughest fitness trainers, I jumped to the task (Feature, P8). But I probably should have done a bit more research about the trampoline classes, so if you’re a mum, don’t miss my top tip. It was super fun though, and well worth stretching my boundaries to try something new, even if it was challenging. Raelene Rutherford (P22) has a far more serene pastime after discovering the joy of indoor plants. Daydream believer Actor Lincoln Lewis is using his downtime to enjoy a new role as island ambassador Amy Price
L
incoln Lewis has grown up on Australian television screens since he arrived as a fresh-faced teen on Home and Away 12 years ago. But as the uncertain and turbulent life of an actor takes its toll, the 31-yearold is finding comfort in new pursuits. The youngest son of Queensland rugby league legend Wally Lewis, Lincoln was recently named as the first Daydream Island ambassador. The role involves him promoting the island paradise – part of the Whitsundays’ Molle island group – which is set to reopen on April 10, two years after it was devastated by Cyclone Debbie. “It’s a big passion for me,” says Lincoln, who has been living in Brisbane with Wally and mum Jackie. “I think I want my nephew to experience this (the Great Barrier Reef) – any time, two hours on a plane – and one day if I’ve got kids of my own.” While he has worked consistently since he left Home and Away in 2010 – recently starring in House Husbands, the Gallipoli miniseries, comedy flick Spin Out (2016), and last year filming a role in the Gold Coast-based movie Danger Close – it’s the lulls, the pilot seasons spent in Los Angeles, and the jobs missed that are tough to take. “It can be a really brutal industry,” Lincoln says. “It’s those times in between
that are a huge test, but this industry is built on rejection and you have to take the no’s – and that’s 95 per cent of the time. “The thing is keeping your own sanity when the work is scarce and not going your way, because you give it your all. “When work is scarce, my main thing is to travel and see as much of the country as I can ... and whether swimming in the ocean or just being near it, I’m happy.” So for Lincoln, who is also a Tourism Australia ambassador and keen marine conservationist, the offer to work with Daydream Island and resident marine biologists at its educational Living Reef came at the perfect moment. “I almost thought they called the wrong person. It was the same sort of feeling as when you get told you got the role,” he says. “It’s in my home state and I’ve grown up absolutely loving the region. My parents were always taking us up there, and every time they would say we’re going, I would just lose my mind. “Now I can take them. If not, I can send them a photo,” he adds with a laugh. “I’ll see how many people I can fit in a suitcase.” daydreamisland.com

I cannot remember feeling this good after a gym session in a very long time
THE POWER YOGI Jai Hoffman He’s a giant. That’s my first thought on seeing the man mountain who is leading my power yoga class at Enoggera’s Perform 360. Jai Hoffman, 36, is well over 182cm tall, with biceps bigger than my head. I’ve done my preclass research so I know he is an Australian Army veteran who was adept at getting soldiers battle ready in Afghanistan. I have even seen pictures of him in uniform in pincha mayurasana – an impossible-looking forearm balance – on the navy ship HMAS Canberra. In my search for workout warriors, he fits the bill. Still unclear on how power yoga deviates from the basic kind, I unfurl my mat and prepare to find out. We start in child’s pose, curled face down with knees tucked underneath and arms extended. Very doable. All of Jai’s classes begin and end with pranayama, or breath control. “Get in touch with your breath. In for seven seconds, hold for one second, out for seven seconds. Don’t force it. Let it happen naturally,” Jai instructs in a surprisingly gentle tone. Then we’re up and bending into the whole menagerie – the downward dog, the mini cobra, the downward dog with extended leg. This is where the power comes into play. We move quickly between poses, and there’s a definite focus on building strength and athleticism as much as flexibility. It’s vinyasastyle, flow yoga, but the mobility and degree of difficulty are amped. In this particular class, I make the mistake of going in too enthusiastically at the start – sitting deep in poses, opting for the more advanced level in each variation, and trying to keep up with Jai, despite my limited yoga experience. By halfway, I have wobbly legs and fatigue has set in. At Jai’s instruction, I focus on my breath as a way to shift my focus from my burning glutes and shoulders. This helps me power on and stay with the upped degree of difficulty. And things really do get difficult. At one point, I’m standing upright, holding onto the big toe of my left foot, which is extended at 90 degrees in front of me. I can’t remember the name of this pose, but it feels part flamingo and part really bloody hard. I then have to somehow pull that leg by that toe until it’s extended at 90 degrees to my side. I kinda get there, but there’s a lot of hopping around and wall grabbing. I’ve not nailed the Zen. Jai started practising yoga six years ago to aid his recovery from a knee reconstruction. Watching him effortlessly whip his enormous frame around on a yoga mat, he looks more than recovered. My own dodgy knees are holding up really well in the class, and with so many oneV2 - BNSE01Z01MA
legged poses, I can actually feel my stabilising muscles firing. By the time I’m lying flat on my back, eyes closed, practising pranayama again, I’m well and truly spent. As we clear our minds, Jai reminds us to smile at a stranger this week and be kind. Then, when I’m back on my feet, the power yogi swings me a massive high five. I cannot remember feeling this good after a gym session in a very long time. It was challenging but achievable, and the poses felt designed not so much to exhaust (although they do that as well) as to release tension, increase flexibility, and wring out all those niggling pains that build up from days spent behind a desk or with a toddler on the hip. Confession: I used to think bounce-based fitness classes were better suited to childcare centres than gyms. How could a kiddie pastime be classed as serious, sweat-inducing graft? But it is, and I was wrong. Particularly when you’re in the hands of kick-arse instructor and gym owner Lauren Holloway, 35. I take my place in her 45-minute rebound class at Sweat Sessions, which she launched in Bulimba in 2017, though she has been teaching minitrampoline fitness classes for eight years. There is something of the smiling assassin about Lauren. Her big welcoming smile is warm and genuine, but this is a woman on a mission to get you fit, toned and healthy. Her class involves bouncing in vigorous routines to floor-thumping dance anthems on your own individual, mini– tramp, known as a rebounder. Add in a big pink neon sign on the wall that screams “swish swish bish” – after the title of a Katy Perry song – and I could be on the dance floor in a city nightclub. I’ve jumped straight into a more advanced session, so things heat up quickly and I am in a lather of sweat in seconds. It’s hard work. After a fairly intense warm-up track, the songs get faster, and my bounce rate escalates. We go from New Kids on the Block to Backstreet Boys, and by Calvin Harris, I’m not just bouncing, I’m also punching the air in time to the beat, and throwing in some hops, sprints and knee lifts. Lauren is up the front on her own rebounder yelling choreography and encouragement into a hands-free microphone. She’s with us every bounce of the way, but she’s also like a hawk – always watching and making sure every single participant is giving it 100 per cent. No shirking. I appreciate this because it means the rest of my classmates, who have clearly done this before, have less opportunity to notice me flopping around in the back corner. Lauren is tough but kind. She shoots me a smile in the mirror and can tell I’m more blunder than bludger, so she doesn’t call me out for it. Once I get the hang of it, rebound becomes – dare I say it – fun. It’s low impact, so my usually twingey knees are giving me no issues, and I can really feel the effect of pushing my feet harder and harder into the rebounder surface. My thighs burn, my calves are feeling it too, and my butt and core are being held in tight to keep me from ricocheting around the room. The rebound routines get easier to follow once I’ve got the hang of the basics, and most of the exercise sequences are repeated often enough that by the end of a track, I’m able to pre-empt what’s coming next. I didn’t see the seven-minute final song coming, but I’m on board – I like instructors who drain every last bit of energy you have left. The great thing about Sweat Sessions is the dim lighting, so no matter how knackered you are by the end of the class, no one can see it. The reduced visibility is also a blessing for mums with dodgy pelvic floors who came unprepared. That’s me. I’m told regular rebound classes will improve those muscles, but I still think it best to warn any other mums out there: come prepared if you’re a first-time rebounder to avoid, at best, having to style a gym towel into a sarong. Regular sessions with him would have anyone … floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee
THE LORD OF THE RING Jarrett Owen With all of Rocky Balboa’s swagger and Anthony Mundine’s sass, I strut into Brickhouse Gym at Coorparoo. I’ve signed on for a sparring session with Jarrett Owen, 33, who fought on the Jeff Horn and Manny Pacquiao undercard at Suncorp Stadium in 2017. Straight up I clock that he’s a compact 165cm, and I’ve got him by a whisker. This bodes well … But what I quickly discover is that what this pro boxer, personal trainer and gym owner lacks in height, he more than makes up for in speed, endurance and the ability to keep chatting when his opponent (that’s me) can no longer lift her arms, let alone catch her breath. Here’s how it goes down. First, Jarrett leads me upstairs to the state-ofthe-art boxing zone at Brickhouse, with its enormous boxing ring. Then, in a cruel twist, he switches off the airconditioning and fans. A “sweat session” he calls it. Aptly named. After about five minutes of warm-ups, hitting a bag and learning correct form for my jab, cross, hook and uppercut, I am drenched and well aware of every muscle in my arms. “Keep up the speed. More power. Move your feet more. Go. Go. Go!” Jarrett rapid-fires, and I’ve a mind to turn around and sock him instead of the bag. He switches a small pedestal fan on and I tell myself it’s because I’m doing so well and not because I look like I’m about to pass out … Clearly I’m warmed up, so it’s time to get serious. We get in the ring. It’s here that I get my first real insight into the weapon that Jarrett is. Usually a boxing instructor will use pads to catch the combination of blows thrown at him by her trainee. Not Jarrett. With his bare hands, he absorbs every one of my power-fuelled punches without flinching. I promise you, these are not butterfly kisses – I am putting my not inconsiderable might into these jabs, and he just keeps chatting as though we’re at a social event. He tells me I’m a natural, but that’s only because I’m putting equal effort into smiling through my building exhaustion. In between boxing combinations, which by the end worked wonders on my hand-eye co-ordination, he has me squeezing out push-ups, sit-ups, star jumps 10 BRISBANE NEWS April 3-9, 2019

and all those other painful, yet effective, exercises. Intense cardio, strength training and all-over body toning: tick, tick, tick. While I grind away, Jarrett tells me about his clientele – amateur boxers keen to go pro, and everydayers looking to get fit or change their physique. Some of his favourite clients are schoolaged children who need a boost in confidence. But because I’m here to gauge his technique – to see what all the fuss is about – he turns it up a notch. Jarrett pulls his boxing gloves on and lays down the rules for a friendly bout. We’re aiming for shoulders only, and I’m allowed to go as hard as I like – he’ll play nice. I don’t argue. Of the hundreds of punches I throw, I land less than 10 per cent, and that’s not because he hasn’t taught me well. He’s just frighteningly fast and
I am struggling to lift my arms. Another five minutes of this and I physically can’t raise a fist. I’m slouched on the floor in the corner of the ring, fighting for breath and in desperate need of water. When Jarrett has to practically pour it into my mouth, it becomes pretty clear who the champ is. I’m someone who exercises daily and prides herself on her endurance but Jarrett pushes me to my absolute limit during our 45-minute session. He’s got a knack for giving genuine encouragement and physical orders in the same breath, and I reckon regular sessions with him would have anyone of any fitness level floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee. Alicia Pyke Anyone is fair game once you decide to give it a go and talk to strangers. Yes, I’m that person Dogs and kids will save the world. Don’t believe me? As we talk less to each other face-to-face than ever before, cute puppies and cooing babies still have the power to make us stop and say hello. Like we used to. It’s true. People out walking with a pooch or a pram are the easiest to start a conversation with. But anyone is fair game once you decide to give it a go and talk to strangers. Yes, I’m that person. I’ll stop for a yarn if I have the time, and often when I don’t. Being friendly is part of the reason I’m usually left trailing behind
Guy. My chattiness and his long legs. It helps that I’m one of the few people who leaves home in the morning not plugged into a device. I actually want to feel connected to the world when I’m out in it. I want to shake my head and tut tut with you when your bus drives past without stopping, even though you’re sure there’s still space. I’m here for you, if only for a second. Couldn’t we all do with being a bit more aware of each other? A bit gentler? More tuned in? Throwing out a cheery hello while going for a walk isn’t the only chance to invite more human connection into your day.
Waiting for coffee, posting a letter, and queuing at the supermarket can be when the unexpectedly good stuff happens too – if you slow down and let it. Some of my closest friends would be mortified if a stranger tried to engage them in a chat at the checkout, so I know it’s not for everyone. But me, I’ll happily wax on about the weather, news, or even more controversial topics, like how soon is too soon for hot-cross buns (never, they’re delicious, pass the butter please). “Lovely garden” is another of my best opening lines, and it’s worked all over the world – from a mountain village in
Switzerland to suburban Brooklyn, NYC. The logic is hardly Mensa level: if someone is out pottering about in the garden as you walk by, it’s probably because they put a lot of effort into tending it. So go on, say something sweet – you might just make their day. And if you see any dogs and babies, please give them my best. Slowing down invites connection. If you’re always rushing, it’s impossible to notice anyone else, unless they’re doing something annoying, in which case, they’re infuriatingly impossible to ignore. That’s not the kind of connection any one of us wants, so back to the good stuff.

Worlds collide Kooky culinary combos call the tune at a Valley eatery that covers all the bases, from breakfast to evening cocktails RESTAURANT Tony Harper Whistle Dixie: what’s rolling through your mind? For me, it is emphatically southern USA, with its jazz, pulled pork, Cajun and creole, broad accents, sunburnt necks, and big hats. So I’m expecting bowls of chilli, ribs and burgers, pulled pork, cornbread, and perhaps a gumbo thrown in for interest. But the folk behind the Fortitude Valley restaurant that bears the moniker have a different view. They’ve taken the idiom that means idle thoughts, wishful thinking; taking things beyond expectation. My initial reaction is to argue the point, but we did walk out of the place saying how much better it was than we’d initially thought. So perhaps the folk behind Whistle Dixie have achieved their goal. On the ground floor of a newish, rather futuristic, office block at 900 Ann St, it has two decent-size rooms and some outdoor seating. It doubles as a cafe – breakfast, coffee, and so on – and something a little more serious for lunch and dinner. There is a decent range of beers, both craft and conventional, and loads of cocktails, plus a wine list that’s neither here nor there: decent enough stuff, but a bit amorphous. Service is casual. You order and pay at the bar, take a number to your table and wait. My dreams of southern cooking aren’t entirely smashed; there’s a brisket burger, pulled-pork croquettes, and tequila prawns. But, in a cultural sense, the menu flaps around wildly, with elements of Thai, Italian, and even a Madras curry. And occasionally these cultures collide on the same plate. Like, for example, the tequila prawns

($18). It’s a lively, colourful, nicely tasty dish – half a dozen peeled prawns (tequilasoaked, I guess) on a loose bed of salad that’s advertised as pico de gallo, but certainly isn’t. So far it has a Mexican bent, but there’s a bowl of nam jim for dipping … that’s Thai. It works, so no complaints, but it’s a kooky combination. Not so successful, but full of promise, is a plate of fish tacos ($14, inset). Flathead, as far as I am concerned, is the king of fish for
the table – sweet, moist, flaky. Here it is blackened on the grill, but not in a Paul Prudhomme sort of way, just overcooked and dry. And the fish is sitting in these taco-cups, also overcooked, dry and a wee bit burnt. The whole lot is saved by a pretty good (and thankfully moist) collection of avocado, mango and pomegranate. It could be so good. The brisket burger ($17) is bang-on, and pulled-pork croquettes ($14) are unexpectedly delicious.
It’s thinking back that has me pulling apart our meal. At the time, we were fairly happy. And I reckon that’s because (ignoring the overcooked fish and nearburnt tacos), things were pretty tasty, even if they were a little odd. So there is plenty of potential, and dining at Whistle Dixie is a quite relaxing, nice enough experience, but there’s no real focus – drinks or food. It’s a pleasant shambles.

Sizzling secrets Seek steak supremacy by trying this trio of alternative cuts at your next barbecue, writes Alastair McLeod Aussie barbecues are synonymous with steak, and that suggests rump and rib, or eye fillet if you’re feeling particularly profligate. Here’s another trio to try: tri-tip (bottom of the sirloin), flat iron (from the shoulder), and hanger steak (from the diaphragm). Hanger steak, also called butcher’s steak, is a well-kept secret as it’s the piece butchers often keep for themselves. These “less is more” cuts sit well with me. I don’t eat red meat often but when I do, I enjoy small amounts of the best quality. The secret to success is the same with all steaks. Ensure they are at room temperature before cooking, don’t overcook them, and allow them to rest before enjoying. These are my secrets, make sure your butcher reveals theirs.
HANGER STEAK, SMOKED EGGPLANT MAYO, CHARRED CUCUMBER INGREDIENTS 5 medium lebanese cucumbers 30ml sherry vinegar 5tsp EVOO, plus additional for steak 1½tsp soy Sea salt and freshly milled pepper 1 small hanger steak, trimmed into
two loins Smoked eggplant mayo 1 medium eggplant 500ml mayonnaise ½tsp chilli pepper 1 lemon, zested 2tbs tahini
METHOD Set four cucumbers on a preheated barbecue or place on a cake rack over an open flame. Cook until well charred but still firm, then remove and allow to cool. Scrape gently to remove some of the charred skin then halve lengthways and cut each half into four long pieces. Whisk together the vinegar, 2tsp of olive oil, soy and salt then pour over cucumber. Chill until ready to serve. Juice the remaining cucumber and stir in remaining olive oil. Heat the barbecue on its hottest setting. Season the steaks with salt and pepper and brush with a little olive oil. Grill for 2-3 mins on each side, turning every 30 secs or so. Remove the steaks, cover loosely with foil, and rest for 5 mins before carving. For the smoked eggplant mayo, set the eggplant on a preheated barbecue or cook directly over a gas flame until soft and blackened. Allow to cool then carefully peel. Tear flesh into large strips and leave in a colander to drain for half an hour before combining with remaining ingredients. Season to taste. To serve, spread mayo on plates and arrange cucumber and steak on top. Drizzle with cucumber juice. Foxy lady Brisbane actor Gemma Willing is honing her instincts and energy for her latest role, in a Roald Dahl classic Fiona Purdon
S
he’s only lived in Brisbane for a year and already actor Gemma Willing is making her mark on local stages. Fresh from appearing in Queensland Theatre’s run of Death of a Salesman, Gemma will this month star in the premiere adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic The Fantastic Mr Fox. The Perth-born actor will play Mrs Fox in local theatre company Shake & Stir’s adaptation of the 1970 children’s bestseller at QPAC. She is looking forward to returning to the Playhouse Theatre’s “enormous and beautiful big stage space’’. “This opportunity is enormous. This is the third Roald Dahl show Shake & Stir have put on, and not many theatre companies around the world can boast
that,’’ Gemma, 31, says. “It’s such a big achievement for a Brisbane company.” As Mrs Fox, Gemma will play the part of the supportive wife of wily Mr Fox, who, to feed his family, robs three cruel farmers – Boggis’ chicken house, Bunce’s storehouse of ducks and geese, and Bean’s cider cellar. The family play centres around Mr Fox’s burglary plans, with Mrs Fox providing the voice of reason. Nick Skubij stars as Mr Fox, while Ross Balbuziente will direct. “You can’t outfox a fox – they are smart, quick and cunning,’’ Gemma laughs. “Nick is a great actor, and he knows how to move well as Mr Fox.’’ Gemma, of New Farm, likes that the role is very physical, and she’s been working hard at the gym to achieve peak fitness. She watched the 2009 animated film by
Wes Anderson, and featuring three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep as Mrs Fox, before she auditioned. “Meryl Streep’s Mrs Fox is smooth and sultry. For my interpretation, there may be elements of sultriness, but I’m looking for energy and the quickness and instinctiveness of a fox,’’ she says. “I’m trying to pick up the mannerisms of a fox … how they are always on the balls of their feet, with their smooth, fast and effortless movement.’’ Gemma says the spectacular set design will feature projections of sky and underground. Gemma and boyfriend of four years Jonathon Kissick, a “maths dude’’ and quantitative analyst, moved to Brisbane a year ago because they liked the city’s “vitality and friendliness’’, as well as the
growing work opportunities. “There are so many great shows coming out of Brisbane, and more are being filmed and shot here,’’ she says. “Brisbane is growing so rapidly, and the arts are so supported and embraced.’’ Gemma, who starred as Catherine Earnshaw in Shake & Stir’s national tour of Wuthering Heights in 2016, had already graduated from a psychology and behavioural studies degree in Perth when she decided to chase her passion for acting. “Acting makes me happy, I don’t have as much fun doing anything else,’’ she says. “It’s so much fun to explore interesting characters.’’ Shake & Stir’s Fantastic Mr Fox, Apr 11-20, Playhouse Theatre, QPAC, South Bank, qpac.com.au

Living colour Bernard Ollis celebrates the bright side of life with vibrant paintings of Paris and Brisbane Phil Brown Sometimes it takes a fresh eye to see a city anew. Artist Bernard Ollis has that fresh eye, his colourful, jaunty paintings capturing the essence of Brisbane. His latest exhibition, at Mitchell Fine Art in Fortitude Valley, is entitled The Traveller and it reflects his peripatetic ways. Bernard lives in Sydney with his partner, Archibald Prize-winning artist Wendy Sharpe, who exhibits with Philip Bacon just up the street from Mike Mitchell’s gallery. Interestingly, as her latest exhibition was coming to an end, Bernard’s was opening. The couple spend several months a year living in Paris, and they travel extensively. In his current show, Bernard focuses on his two favourite cities – Paris and Brisbane. As different as these might be, they both engage and inspire him. “They might be different architecturally, and in other ways, but they are two destinations I like,” Bernard says. “Brisbane is such a buzzing place, I love coming here. The intensity of colour … there’s a freshness here.” Bernard first came here in the 1970s. He migrated from England to teach art in the Northern Territory, and he had a successful academic career in Australia. He went on to become director of the National Art School in Sydney for a decade before retiring to concentrate on his own art. He recalls his first visit to Brisbane as a

young man, when he arrived unencumbered by the sort of snobbery we used to cop from southerners. He loved Brisbane from the start and has always had a fondness for our heritage architecture – as a wonderful painting of the historic Regatta Hotel in his show
reveals. Gardens with Story Bridge is another cracker. And while Bernard does confess to suffering from artistic angst from time to time, he spares us from it by offering work that is bright and uplifting. “It would be very easy to be pessimistic,”

DUMBO (PG) hhhhj Director: Tim Burton Starring: Colin Farrell, Eva Green, Michael Keaton Who better to tackle a flying-elephant story than the man who stole our hearts with a gothic fantasy about a boy with scissors for hands? Burton is unusually sympathetic towards freaks – of all persuasions. The visually distinctive director raises the emotional stakes in this thrilling “live-
action” remake of Dumbo, which makes the palms sweat even as the spirit soars. At no point during the 112-minute spectacle does Burton allow his audience to lose sight of the titular pachyderm’s extreme vulnerability – not only to violent bullies and rapacious entrepreneurs, but also to the laws of physics. A select number of shots from Dumbo’s perspective are powerfully employed. But rather than overanthropomorphise the title character, Burton casts him as a dumb innocent, after all, the cute babyanimal factor – tactile trunk, seemingly
warm wrinkly skin, feather-generated sneezes – is already there in the CGI. Tonally, Burton takes his cue from the Big Top, where danger is an integral part of the attraction. And the film is set against a fantastical, post-WWI backdrop, when occupational health and safety laws didn’t apply. When Dumbo flies, there’s that same sickly exhilaration circus audiences experience when a highwire artist flies overhead – which explains the inspired teaming of the animal with Green’s beautiful, haunted aerial star, Colette

And the Seven Deadly Sins are already wreaking havoc on Planet Earth, having been liberated by the embittered villain, Dr Thaddeus Sivana (Strong). So with his last breath, The Wizard Shazam transfers his demon-slaying superpowers to a reluctant Batson by way of a magical staff. The troubled 14-year-old soon adjusts to his new-found ability to transform into a dorky adult superhero, Shazam (Levi) – what teenage boy wouldn’t love being stronger than Superman and faster than lightning? Marchant. Ratcheting up the tension is Keaton’s ruthless villain, show business impresario V. A. Vandevere, who heightens the excitement of the pair’s debut flight by removing their safety net. Danny DeVito strikes a winning blend of shyster and showman in the role of Max Medici, the small-time circus owner who “discovers” Dumbo and to whom Vandevere makes a partnership offer that is too good to refuse. Farrell casts a somewhat tragic figure as one-armed war veteran Holt Farrier, a former circus star who has been demoted to elephant handler. Having lost their mother to influenza, Holt’s sweet, serious-minded children bond with the ridiculed, motherless Dumbo, fostering his unique talents. The eldest, Milly (Nico Parker), wants to be a scientist, not a “show-off”, in a nod to positive gender modelling that doesn’t feel forced. Although types, none of Dumbo’s characters feel like cliches, apart from Vandevere’s evil henchmen. Even the colourful carny chorus, which includes Roshan Seth’s snake charmer and DeObia Oparei’s strongman, strike a soulful chord. Sharon Rooney’s Fat Lady delivers an achingly beautiful, ukulele-led rendition of the iconic lullaby Baby Mine, performed in the original 1941 animation by Betty Noyes. Dumbo is an immensely satisfying blend of spectacle, emotion and showground ride. There’s even a surprisingly subversive subtext surrounding the commodification of art – Vandevere’s amusement park bears obvious parallels to Disneyland. REVIEWS BY VICKY ROACH

But a hero’s journey is always about more than his physical strengths and limitations. Batson has never recovered from the childhood trauma of being briefly separated from his mother, who then mysteriously disappeared. Sivana has a serious father complex, and the two share deep-seated trust issues. Batson’s emotional immaturity means he initially can’t conceive of Shazam as much more than a supercharged party trick, but Sivana is playing for keeps. The superhero is the only thing standing between him and the powers he has devoted his life to unlocking. When the vengeance-minded villain and his guardian demons kidnap Batson’s foster siblings, the troubled youngster is forced to make a stand. it, but as soon as she was done, she applied a soothing gel that rapidly eased the irritation. Within an hour, the discomfort was minimal. I even swung by Woolies on my way home.

The verdict
When it comes to facials, I don’t ask for much. A bit of quiet time, a nice scalp massage, a post-treatment glow and I’m good. Or I was. Now that I’ve experienced a Clear + Brilliant laser treatment, I’m wondering why I wasted all that time lying down and listening to dolphin music. I’ve learnt that for a small amount of discomfort, a facial can deliver genuine results, and I confess to being hooked.
Really good tangible results for much less discomfort than I expected. The morning after my treatment, my face was a bit pink and slightly rough to the touch, but I was easily able to apply makeup and be seen in public without frightening anyone. Within five days the roughness had disappeared and the results were visible.
The best bit The results! My favourite thing has been the distinct reduction in superficial pigmentation. My skin is also smoother to the touch, appears clearer and brighter, and it seems to respond better to skincare, looking much “glowier” once I’ve cleansed and moisturised. A course of three to six treatments is recommended.
The details According to my dermal therapist, Ebonee, whose calm confidence put me at ease, Clear + Brilliant is a great starter therapy for laser newbies. After thoroughly cleansing my skin, Ebonee applied a numbing cream and left me to my own devices for 20 minutes – I declined the offer of an iPad loaded with Netflix, but points for initiative there. On returning, she set to work, passing the Clear + Brilliant fractional laser over my face, with two passes over each patch of skin. So how does it feel? Like a fine scratchy wire is being trailed across the skin. Laser treatments work by traumatising the skin, thus prompting the production of new skin cells and collagen, and after about 15 minutes, I did start to feel an unpleasant sunburn-like sensation. Ebonee went on to treat my neck and decolletage, which lengthened the treatment. Yes, by this time I wasn’t loving

ilvestro Silvestori is in full flight. Is that his stage name we wonder? He has all the attributes of a fully fledged thespian in command of an appreciative audience. It’s the kind of theatrical performance Italians are noted for. We’re in Lecce, a beautiful Baroque city in Italy’s deep south, and Silvestro’s stage is a rather exceptional cooking school in his chic 17th-century mid-city house. He has us eating out of his hands … not literally, I hasten to add. We’re lapping up the vibe, lubricated by some excellent rosé, the speciality of the province of Puglia. Taste not, want not, as the saying goes. Silvestro is an American-Italian who has come home to his mother country in pursuit of his dream to promote the far south of Italy, specifically its food, wine and cooking culture. In that sense, this is far more than just learning a few southern Italian recipes that we can hopefully replicate at home. We are engrossed by tales of the early history of the south, occupied as it was by successive waves of Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans and Spaniards lusting after the rich agricultural lands, and perhaps other things as well. This is the secret ingredient that sets Awaiting Table apart from other cooking schools we’ve been to. It’s a place where you can, in a day, learn pretty much everything you need to know about Puglian culture, languages and dialects. Back to food. Before doing anything in the kitchen, Silvestro takes our small group of six to the local market, where he knows everybody and is able to negotiate the best produce at (presumably) good prices. Artichokes for two euros? No sir, one euro for you. Laden with fresh vegies and some organic chicken, we saunter back through the labyrinth of Lecce to his house, where we’re introduced to his well-equipped kitchen. Nothing lacking here … including V1 - BNSE01Z01MA

some odd-looking utensils that clearly have a history of their own (the Spanish Inquisition comes to mind). This is, thankfully, not a TV studio with squeakyclean improbable props; it’s rolled-up sleeves and down to business. We begin with preparing classic Italian antipasti with a seasonal southern twist … raw fava beans, poppy leaves (no, not the ones you’re thinking of), artichokes fresh from our market visit, roasted capsicum and melanzana (aubergine), a cucumber salad, olives, of course, breads from the bakery nearby, and so on. Just as well the sleeves are hoisted for the pasta course. By the time we immerse V2 - BNSE01Z01MA
ourselves in tipo 00 flour and water, our arms and aprons are well and truly covered. We learn the delicate thumbing technique of making Cappelletti Messicana, little pasta hats with a secret sauce involving those wonderful Italian tomatoes, herbs and spices. The main course, if there’s any room left, is a delicious pollo con i capperi (chicken fricassee with capers) and a refreshing cucumber salad. Full tummy? The strawberries dipped in wine will persuade you otherwise. Silvestro is also a noted wine critic and judge, so throughout the meal, we’re also judging three different rosés, but by this
stage, it’s too late for comparisons – they’re all good. So are the reds, for which we’ve acquired a more than passing taste during our holiday. It’s hard to choose between Primitivo, Negromaro or Salice Salentino. They match the earthiness of the region perfectly. How to sum up an experience like Awaiting Table? In the words of Trevor, a recent Australian visitor: “Between them, Silvestro, Stefania and Anna will ensure you leave Lecce with lasting memories … and maybe a few extra kilos/pounds around your girth.”
The province of Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot, is not so well known to most Australians, but that’s all changing. The attraction? Well, Puglia encompasses several distinctly different regions – from the Salento in the deep south, to the Valle d’Itria in the middle, and Gargano in the north. They’re all different, and when contemplating a holiday in Puglia, you need to do your homework and research what each region offers. For us, a villa is the ultimate Puglia experience. You can find a beautiful villa for any number of people from two upwards, and, of course, the more guests, the cheaper it gets on a perperson basis. Most villas are rented in weekly blocks, Saturday to Saturday, but you may be able to negotiate shorter stays off-peak. However, the joy of not packing and moving every few days can’t be underestimated. Most villas have everything, including UK satellite TV, a pool, or a fireplace for the cooler months. Cooking lessons can be easily arranged, or a dine-in chef will do it all for you. And there’s always a great restaurant or trattoria not far away … this is Italy! Villa specialist The Thinking Traveller arranges rentals for Englishspeaking guests and organises everything to your specific brief. They booked us at Terrarossa near the town of Fasano, close to Monopoli, and it was perfect. We were met by the villa’s owners and presented with “goodie boxes” of fresh produce, pasta, cheese, wine, bread and everything to set us up for a few days. After that, the local markets were a real treat, especially in Fasano. Renting a car from Bari, Puglia’s capital, gives you access to the countryside, the beaches and tours around the region. Potted charms A bayside greenery queen has a growing following for her retro mix of pot plants and op-shop finds, writes Cassandra Houghton A verdant oasis thrives inside Raelene Rutherford’s dual-level post-war house, which, from the outside, looks like any other in its Capalaba locale. As the green thumb behind the popular Instagram page, @_theseplantsofmine_, Raelene’s home is filled with foliage and retro cane decor, and the transition from busy street corner to serene urban jungle is a welcome one. “It really does bring about a big sense of calm for me,” she says of the greenery. Raelene shares her home with partner Brendon and children Lexxum, 20, and Oliver, 11. “I work around technology and the public all day at Optus, and sometimes that can be quite stressful … so coming home to my family – and also my green family – is nice,” she laughs. From the light-filled sunroom to the living areas and kitchen, leaves in jade, olive and emerald hues trail over wooden shelves and vintage cane pots. Lush and leafy, the plants, with fairytale names like Marble Queen Pothos and Syngonium, have transformed the small spaces into havens. A red oriental-style rug contrasts with greenery in the main living area, however it is the large and intricate cane peacock chair that really draws the eye. “I found it on Gumtree, which was really awesome as they’re quite hard to come by, and quite expensive,” Raelene, 42, says. “It’s ’70s or ’80s era. It has also been in every room of the house. It probably drives my partner crazy because I do change things around a lot. I’m always thinking about moving things to different spaces. “The cane screen there is special too. I had been searching for one for about two years and I finally found it at an op shop literally three minutes’ drive down the road. I love all the old stuff – it all has a story behind it.”
That Raelene is neither a plant stylist nor a gardener or interior designer has not affected the popularity of @_theseplantsofmine_. She has more than 13,000 followers who enjoy her curation of retro rattan and botany. “I find it really crazy that I have so many followers,” she says. “To me, Instagram isn’t about followers and likes though, it’s my down time and my creative outlet. I’ve definitely not always been a green thumb. I’ve always enjoyed taking photos though, so that to me – taking photos of my plants and posting them – it’s my way of expressing myself.” So it’s not about the plant stylist trend? “Plant styling is definitely a trend, it’s a thing at the moment, but for a lot of people, plants are something they love working with, and it’s about the way they make them feel,” she says. “I’m not a plant expert at all, it has definitely been trial and error, as well as reading a lot and asking lots of questions.” Most of her plants, she says, come from home growers, small nurseries and Gumtree; she’s not a fan of the massproduced market. “I also propagate a lot too, so you’ll notice along the living room wall, I’ve got all the glass jars going. They’re just all clippings of plants – I’ve got them everywhere,” she gestures. “Having a lot of plants inside increases the humidity so they help each other. And this allows them to support each other’s growth. “A lot of my plants are just common plants though – I stick to the ones I know are going to thrive in my environment. But the benefits have been huge. Hay fever and anxiety levels – the plants have definitely helped with that. “And just the sense of calm, whether you’re tending to them or just sitting around them. It feels good.”

If you don’t, I’m afraid I’m not going to be able to be your friend any more. Sorry about that. I can only really relate to people who love The Beatles and Seinfeld. As for everyone else, well, I wish you good luck. I was thinking about the Fab Four the other weekend when we were driving to the Gold Coast listening to John Lennon’s album Imagine. Cruising down the highway I was thinking, “How good is this?” And I was singing along – I know all the words. Put any Beatles album on and I can accompany it. Same with the later solo albums by the Fab Four after they broke up. I know there’s lots of new music out there,

but I really can’t be bothered. I regard my music in the same way as I regard my friends – I’ve got enough, I don’t need any more. A woman who invited me to a party once suggested it would be fun because there were some people she’d like me to meet. “Sorry,” I said, “my dance card is full.” In other words, I’ve got enough friends already. Same goes with my music. I have The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Lou Reed, Van Morrison, Nick Drake and The Doors. And that’ll do me! I first got switched on to The Beatles when we moved to Hong Kong in 1963, and although my father wouldn’t let me grow my hair, I used to comb it over in an attempt
to create a mop top. As the 1960s went by, each new album by The Beatles was like a spiritual awakening for me, and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was like the Second Coming. John Lennon was always my favourite Beatle, but it wasn’t until I was in my mid teens that I realised we shared a birthday, October 9. I see that as significant. I often play George Harrison’s music, and Paul McCartney’s, and I know Ringo has done some stuff too, but I prefer him in the background drumming. He’s a great drummer, although there’s that old story about how, when it was put to John Lennon that Ringo might be the best drummer in
the world, Lennon supposedly quipped: “He’s not even the best drummer in The Beatles.” So the story goes. The Beatles’ music is the soundtrack of my life, and there’s enough of it to keep me going without adding new bands to my playlist. You could say I am set in my ways, but that would be an understatement. I’m like concrete. But the richness of The Beatles’ music has sustained me for decades. Luckily, my wife loves it too, and my son has been thoroughly indoctrinated. So I’m still listening all these years later, and I’m still combing my hair over, although nowadays, that’s for a different reason.
