Modern family Down on the farm with Simon Leyshan, Holt Meyers and their darling daughter Olivia

TAKE A PEEK INSIDE SOUTHEAST QUEENSLAND’S PRESTIGE PROPERTIES

This week... You would be hard pressed to find two more devoted dads than Simon Leyshan and Holt Meyers. The pair sat down with Belinda Seeney (P8) for a frank chat about how, with the aid of a donor egg and a surrogate, they became first-time dads to their precious girl, Olivia. The gay couple, who recently moved from Brisbane to Maleny, broadcast their daily antics via their @champagnedadstyle feed on Instagram, and it’s easy to see why they have gained a following. Images of the handsome trio hitting the ski slopes or feeding the chooks are heartwarming and often hilarious – but also deliver a deeper message. Simply, that family is what you make it. Enjoy our Father’s Day issue.

FIRST PERSON

Belinda Seeney I try to get excited about starting the weekend on a high, but if Friday night were a horse race, more often than not I’d be a late scratching FOMO is so 2017. The Fear of Missing Out that fuelled our lives and shaped our social media footprint has been relegated to the trash heap of fleeting fads alongside planking, pyjamas as outerwear and the Harlem Shake. In its place is a new movement, one I fully support in a double-tap, five-star, swipe right, 100 per cent approval rating kind of way. JOMO. That’s right, the Joy of Missing Out. No longer need I feel guilty for giving Friday night festivities a swerve in favour of some quality couch time with a new book, fluffy bed socks and my two favourite men – Ben and Jerry. There’s an excitement that comes with fleeing the office on a Friday evening knowing my only commitment is to finishing a bowl of curry laksa from the local Malaysian takeaway. I’m not alone in embracing JOMO,

04 BRISBANE NEWS August 29-September 4, 2018

either. About 1000 Aussie adults were surveyed and a quarter of them admitted to regularly bailing on their Friday night social engagements, and nearly two-thirds confessed to pulling the pin if it were too cold outside. In the interests of full disclosure, this “survey” was conducted by a fooddelivery service, so it has a vested interest in driving people indoors. But commercial agendas aside, the JOMO movement just speaks to me. Firstly, Friday night is most definitely not party night, and I’m deliriously glad I no longer have to pretend I’m up for an epic evening. By the end of the working week I’m usually a shell of a human being, cursing myself for agreeing to those after-work drinks or late dinner plans. I try to talk myself into it, pump myself up and get excited about starting the weekend on a high, but if

Friday night were a horse race, more often than not I’d be a late scratching. Excuses range from the blunt “I’m out” to the vague “I’m sorry, I just can’t make it anymore” to the outright fibs of “I’m sick”, “I have to work late” and “I’ve double-booked myself”. I’ve also perfected the art of smokebombing. For the uninitiated, that’s when you put in an appearance at an event, make sure your attendance has been clocked, then disappear stealthily into the night – no goodbyes, no warning, no fuss. Give me half an hour to check my name off a guest list, pose for photos, politely accept a glass of bubbles and congratulate the guest of honour, then I’m home with my pint of Coconut Seven Layer Bar ice cream before anyone realises I’ve even left. I may be persuaded to stay longer if it ever becomes fashionable again to wear pyjamas as outerwear.

THE CHAT

Local hero Moreton Bay’s succulent seafood stars in chef Paul West‘s food festival eats Kylie Knight He made his name as a TV chef and farmer, but Paul West says home cooks should be celebrated more than the so-called superstars of the kitchen. “The most celebrated chefs should be the home cooks who put food on the table seven nights a week,” Paul says. His grounded outlook and appreciation of everyday cooking stem from his earliest memories of making jam drops with his grandmother and watching his dad burn steak and onions on the barbecue every Sunday. And it was cemented during his time on the television program River Cottage Australia, which took him on a journey from chef to sustainable farmer from 2013-16. Paul says many people are afraid to cook but shouldn’t be, especially if they can source fresh, local ingredients. And he reckons Brisbane’s best-kept secret is the Moreton Bay region. “The hinterland has amazing produce, but if I had to pick an iconic ingredient, it’s the seafood. You’ve got the Moreton Bay bug,” he says. “Cooking with the best ingredients is the best way to be the best cook you can be.” See for yourself when Paul works his magic on the USC Seafood Cooking Stage during the Moreton Bay Food and Wine Festival (Sep 8 and 9). The two-day foodie event will

showcase the region’s best producers, restaurants and cafes. Paul will prove you can do more with prawns than dip them in dressing, and preach the benefits of buying local. “About 75 per cent of the seafood we eat (generally) is imported. It’s crazy.” One of the key lessons learned from his River Cottage Australia days was to care about food and its provenance. “If you can’t grow it yourself and have to buy it, care about where it comes from.” It’s a philosophy Paul continues to embrace in his new life in Melbourne with wife Alicia, sons Otto, 3, and Bowie, 1, and dog Digger. Paul is taking the skills he developed on the farm and applying them in his new back yard. “It’s not too much different. We still grow food in the back yard and I’m getting chickens and bees in spring.” But when sourcing their food, they have to consider cost, seasons and sustainability. Eating seasonally, buying secondary cuts of meat and using good quality offal have made following his philosophy feasible in the city. “They are cheaper than prime cuts, more nutritious a lot of the time and with some TLC they can turn into amazing meals,” he says. “You can have low impact on the planet without breaking the bank.” Moreton Bay Food and Wine Festival, Sep 8 & 9, Redcliffe Seaside Village, Redcliffe Pde. moretonbayfoodandwine.com.au

Three’s company A move to the country is the icing on the cake for these Instagram favourites and their divine little daughter Belinda Seeney The road narrows as it winds through lush hills on the outskirts of Maleny, with cafes and bookstores giving way to cattle grids and bunya pines. Over the crest of a hill, atop verdant manicured lawn, sits a sprawling white house with a gabled blue-grey roof. Waiting regally at the circular driveway is Olivia, 4, resplendent in Elsa’s gauzy gown from Frozen, accessorised with a huge smile and a pair of glittery ruby slippers. Both the castle – and its fair princess – are familiar to followers of Instagram account @champagnedadstyle. Olivia’s “dada”, Simon Leyshan, 36, runs the account, sharing glimpses into the life they share with his partner of eight years and Olivia’s “daddy”, Holt Meyers, 45. More than 17,000 followers are entertained and engaged by the innerBrisbane family’s tree change to the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Simon’s self-deprecating posts about farm life, his honest admissions about child-raising, and his candid insights into surrogacy and same-sex parenting. While posts illustrate the trio’s envy-inducing family holidays abroad, stylish interiors and picture-perfect rural vistas, happy family outings and yes, a

champagne or two, Simon started the account in early 2016 on a more sombre note. “I had struggled with depression and when Olivia turned two years old, I hit rock bottom,” the former personal trainer reveals. He battled loneliness and isolation as a stay-at-home dad, all the while feeling he had no reason to complain because this life “was what I’d always wanted”. A therapist suggested he join Instagram as one way of forging new connections. “I was honestly just stalking people! I am actually very shy so I just wanted to peep on the world and not necessarily get involved. “It grew very quickly; people would ask me questions and I got more confident. “Plus, it’s fun. I’ve always been surprised by the interest in what we do.” That interest led to a flurry of opportunities for Simon – from modelling in Wintergarden’s fashion campaign to social media activations for BMW, Youfoodz and Warner Bros. He’s selective about which offers he accepts and agreed with Holt they would not use Olivia to spruik products on her own. “It was never about putting her out there or trying to get free toys and things for her,” Holt says. “We didn’t want her to think it’s normal that a present turns up for her every week.”

Rather, the two weigh up opportunities presented to them “as a family”. “We always try to be genuine. What you see is what you get,” Simon says. As well as sharing interior decorating

tips and advice for travelling with preschoolers, the Instagram account has inspired, educated and informed followers about same-sex families. Simon estimates he gets “hundreds of

was gay. I was always with girls but never felt what everyone else did – that spark.” After several years travelling the world, he returned to Australia determined to meet someone and joined a dating app.

“I started thinking things through and it was like, for the first time in my life, I was allowed to let go. I’d made the decision to meet someone,” Simon says of embracing his sexuality.

“But it was all very new to me and the first time I met Holt – who was living openly as a gay man – I remember saying, ‘I’m not gay!’ We’d spoken and he seemed really nice and I remember thinking, even if he’s just a friend, maybe I can ask him questions. “But when he opened the door, it was that stupid cliche of feeling an automatic connection. There was that spark. I moved in three months later and we’ve been together ever since.” Simon always knew he wanted to be a father and worried his relationship with Holt would mean closing the door on that dream. “I remember him telling me this on one of our first dates and I told him two guys could have kids; it was really complicated, but it was an option,” Holt recalls. Two years into their relationship, they started investigating those options and contacted a reputable surrogacy agency in California. What followed was a lengthy and thorough two-year process of screenings, interviews and finally, the selection of both a surrogate and egg donor. The family continues to have “a fantastic relationship” with their surrogate Denise, who Olivia refers to as her “tummy mummy”, and have visited her in

TRAILBLAZER

Healing hands This gym owner goes to great lengths to help others banish pain KERRYN ANDREWS-CONROY, 47 Exercise physiologist and flexologist WHAT’S NEW WITH YOU? I have just opened Queensland’s only Stretch Studio (in Latrobe Tce, Paddington). People think we offer stretch classes, but we actually give you the choice of a 30, 40, 50 or 60-minute one-on-one stretch. We stretch you – we do all the hard work. I have clients who come in once a week for a stretch telling me things like, “This is changing my life because I can move pain free” or “My arthritis symptoms are 80 per cent improved” or “I have started exercising again”. This is changing my life, knowing I am helping people live a happier, healthier, pain-free life. HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT? Stretching has always been recommended by doctors, physios, chiros and personal trainers, but unfortunately people just do not take the time to do it. That’s why there is such a market for one-on-one stretching. Flexologists work in line with gyms and personal trainers. Just by having a regular stretch you can avoid injuries.

WHY A CAREER IN FITNESS? I’ve been in the fitness industry since I was 14 years old when I started teaching Jazzercise aerobics in Bundaberg. I owned three gyms at one stage over the past eight years, and I would see people work out and they’d walk out without stretching. I’d see the same people who never stretched have ongoing injuries and they’d continually put their gym membership on hold or quit altogether because of these injuries. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU? The person I look up to the most is (Pakistani women’s rights activist) Malala Yousafzai. What an amazing young woman. WHEN OR WHERE ARE YOU HAPPIEST? I’m so happy at work, tragic but true. I also own Snap Fitness Newmarket. I am a single mum of two teens and run the two businesses on my own, so unfortunately a holiday is not on the agenda; however, we have a weekend away coming up. My nanna is turning 95 so we are going to her party on the Sunshine Coast. LEESA MAHER stretchstudios.com.au

RECIPE

Glam edge For TV show pizzazz, go straight to the sauce, says Alastair McLeod Reality television of the culinary kind has us enthralled with the alchemy of sauce: the depth, integrity, texture, balance, umami. Too much sauce? There’s never too much, apparently. Often they are appendage blobs, swipes, dabs, foams or drizzles. The truth of the matter is a sauce is simply a liquid to add moisture and flavour. Jus gras or “fatty jus” was called split sauce when I learned to make it – a loose amalgam of fat and gravy in the roasting tin. Here it captures the essence of the chicken with absolutely nothing going to waste. To give your dish a reality show edge, celebrate the short Australian truffle season with a generous shaving.

ROASTED CHICKEN, WILD MUSHROOMS, TRUFFLE, JUS GRAS INGREDIENTS 4kg chicken 6tbs extra virgin olive oil 3 golden shallots, sliced 4 cloves garlic, crushed 4 sprigs thyme, plus some for garnish 3 bay leaves

10 peppercorns 1 litre chicken stock Sea salt and freshly milled pepper 300g wild mushrooms ½ small bunch parsley, leaves picked 1 small black truffle

METHOD Remove the wings from the bird then remove the legs and finally the breasts. Chop the frame and wings into small pieces. Divide each leg into thigh and drumstick, removing the thighbone. Heat half the olive oil in a heavy based fry pan, gather all the bones and fry for 5 mins until well browned. Drain off a little oil then add shallots, garlic, herbs and peppercorns. Pour over stock, bring to a simmer and cook gently for 2 hours. Pour into a sturdy colander set over a bowl. Place a heavy pan on top to extract as much juice as possible. After 30 mins, discard bones and pass liquid through a fine sieve. Keep warm. Heat the remaining oil in a heavy based pan over medium-high heat. Season chicken pieces and place skin side down and cook for 6 mins or until golden. Turn and cook for a further 5 mins. Remove to a plate and cover loosely with foil to rest. Fry mushrooms in the same pan or in a griddle pan until tender then season. To serve, arrange chicken and mushroom on plates, spoon over the jus, scatter with parsley, thyme and shave over truffle. Out to impress With linen tablecloths, innovative food and a tempting drinks list, Urbane takes fine dining to the next level RESTAURANT Tony Harper With Ryan Squires closing his doors and the departure of Alejandro Cancino from Urbane, Brisbane lost its two greatest culinary talents. Silly us. Esquire is, alas, gone, but sibling venues Urbane and The Euro seem to have merely sidestepped and ploughed ahead, with their kitchens now under the care of Andrew Gunn, a relatively young chef with a nicely credentialed resume. He has big clogs to fill: those previously worn by Squires and Cancino, plus, of course, Kym Machin. Yikes. But everything else is business as usual. The Urbane/Euro thing has always had me in two minds, and I guess that’s the whole point of the siblings. I love the serenity, polish and culinary trickery of an Urbane experience, but there is something more fun and inviting about the relaxed bustle of The Euro.

This visit, however, is Urbane and its dimly lit, manicured dining room. On offer are five and eight-course degustations ($120/$155pp incl vegan options). Dietary requirements, foibles, loves and hates are discussed on booking. Once you enter the doors, things run on silk. If you like, you can have your wines matched. I choose my own. An enormous amount of work has gone into the peripherals – padded tables with crisp, wrinkle-free linen; comfy furniture; good stemware and fabulous crockery; music just so; and a fat drinks list (not particularly cheap, but neither, I guess, is the rent) with an exceedingly broad collection of varieties, styles, countries and prices. A bottle of Sileni Estate pinot noir is $60, with $3900 for the DRC (Domaine de la Romanee-Conti) La Tache! The La Tache 2009 is a very good buy. The five-course meal morphs into nine with the addition of petits fours, a cleanser and two stunningly presented “snack”

plates, each with four bite-sized, mostly Asian-inspired creations: potato and truffle foam; scallop ceviche (excellent); crab roll wrapped in john dory sashimi; tomato consomme with smoked mozzarella and basil. Some, like the truffled potato, are merely decent, while the best are glorious. Then the menu proper. It is artful food: clever, occasionally surprising, and mostly so carefully arranged it seems a shame to spoil it with a fork. The pick is a dish of scampi, trussed up in kataifi and sitting in a puddle of bisque. The richness of the bisque is foiled by ponzu and lime; everything is nicely tart. It’s complex texturally and flavour-wise. And braised lamb shoulder comes as a cube, bound by filo pastry, on a bed of couscous, lapped by a jus with a whiff of Moroccan influence. It’s elegant and clever. Towards the end is a dessert course. The tonka-bean “snow”, green apple sorbet and toasted chestnuts is hardly sweet and, for me, more intriguing than delicious, but again, it is texturally complex and a sharp, refreshing full stop to the meal. Wake-up call A potentially fatal health scare spurred Dervla McTiernan on to become an award-winning crime writer Fiona Purdon

STILL STANDING … Writer Dervla McTiernan will appear at BWF. Picture: Julia Dunn

It was a plot twist worthy of a bestseller but, unfortunately for Dervla McTiernan, it was playing out in real life. The award-winning Perth writer, set to appear at Brisbane Writers Festival next week, produced her debut crime thriller The Ruin amid her own life-threatening medical drama – a brain tumour initially deemed too high risk to remove. “It was very scary at the time because my kids were so young – only four and six – and I didn’t want them to lose their mummy,” Dervla says. “It took me two years to write the book. I probably would have kept rewriting if I didn’t have my medical hiccup in 2016.” Thankfully, Irish-born Dervla was referred to Dr Stephen Lewis, who with his ear, nose and throat specialist brother Dr Richard Lewis, used a groundbreaking technique for the surgery. Dervla risked blindness, and possibly death, in the operation to remove the tumour, which was wrapped around her pituitary glands. “Dr Lewis and his brother did an amazing job, and thankfully I’m here to tell the story,” she says. “It adds to your writing because all of those experiences change you. My pituitary glands were damaged but I can live with that. The drugs keep me functioning. I can’t do vigorous exercise anymore but other than that I feel well.’’ Dervla was recovering when The Ruin became the subject of a six-way publishing tug of war and attracted movie rights. The former solicitor was 36 weeks pregnant with son Oisin, now six, and had daughter Freya, now eight, when she and husband Kenny moved to Australia. Dervla’s legal practice in Galway was struggling, a result of the Global Financial Crisis, and the couple were keen to start a

new life. Instead of sitting exams to qualify as a solicitor in Australia, Dervla decided to follow her passion to write, which she does mainly at night, while working parttime at the Mental Health Commission. She set her story in her home town of Galway, drawing on a historic case of parents abusing and neglecting their children. “Galway is the place I know best in the world,’’ she says. In The Ruin, Detective Inspector Cormac Reilly is given cold case files and soon finds a link between a recent apparent suicide drowning and a former case he has regrets over, involving a 14-year-old girl and her baby brother. “The one recurring theme is that people knew enough so that things could have been stopped earlier,’’ she says. Dervla was hand-picked by crimewriting legend Val McDermid for the prestigious Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival in London in July. Now she looks forward to connecting with fans at Brisbane Writers Festival. Her second book is due for release in February. “I could probably give up my day job ... but writing is a joy for me and I want to keep that joy.”

ART

SPACE INVADERS … Now at UQ Art Museum are Jason Wing’s Captain James Crook (top right) and Judy Watson’s Heron Island Suite #1 and Experimental Beds 1 (left).

Dark empire Three shows by indigenous artists reveal their views on Australian history and the land we live in GALLERIES Phil Brown The things you learn by going to art museums. For example, I never knew Captain Cook wore a balaclava. Oh, I see, he didn’t? This is just artistic licence by Jason Wing, a way of weighing in on the whole James Cook controversy. Captain James Crook is a 2013 sculptural work by the artist and it’s one of the most arresting pieces in Defying Empire: 3rd National Indigenous Art Triennial, which is now on at the UQ Art Museum. This touring show from the National Gallery

of Australia is the biggest in a trio of exhibitions of amazing work by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. This may be one of the most comprehensive showings of such work that you have ever seen. And it’s getting quite a bit of attention. I went to see it on a quiet Monday morning and the gallery spaces were already buzzing. As well as Defying Empire, you can see Shirley Macnamara: Layered Threads and Judy Watson: Concealed Histories, both upstairs. But back to Captain Cook, who lingers downstairs with that balaclava on. It’s a

strong statement, and while it may seem a tad sacrilegious to those who think Cook is sacred, the artist has a point. “When I attended high school I was taught that Australia was discovered by Captain James Cook,” Jason writes in the catalogue. “This colonial lie is further reinforced by a huge bronze sculpture in Hyde Park, Sydney, which is situated on a massacre site.” Jason admits his bust of Cook is “subversive” and reveals that he has been attacked over it, often on racist terms. It does make you think. Defying Empire is an extraordinary show featuring a stellar array of artists including Tony Albert, Daniel Boyd, Megan Cope, Judy Watson (who we also see upstairs), Fiona Foley and many more. Local artist Archie Moore is also featured and I love his provocative Aboriginal Anarchy flag design. Shirley Macnamara’s stunning fibre art features works made of spinifex, emu

feathers, bone and ochre. “A landscape of spinifex rings” is how this acclaimed senior indigenous artist from northwest Queensland describes the suspended woven work that forms the centrepiece of her exhibition. Judy Watson’s exhibition features paintings and etchings, and is a collaboration with UQ student curators Isabella Baker and Emma McLean, who visited Judy’s studio and worked closely with the artist to help present this show. It features some work I have seen before – her stunning Heron Island Suite, the result of a residency on the island. Set aside a morning or an afternoon and take in three amazing exhibitions. FILM

Game changer Comedian Damian Callinan causes a stir as a footy coach who enlists refugees to save his team Fiona Purdon

CALL THE REF… Damian Callinan (centre) wrote and stars in the new film, The Merger.

He’s a diehard Aussie rules fan, so it comes as no surprise that Damian Callinan has written a film with a footy focus. The Melbourne comedian is the writer and star of dramedy The Merger, which centres around a small rural town whose local team, the Bodgy Creek Football Club, is set to fold or merge unless they find enough numbers. Damian plays ex-footy star and coach Troy Carrington, who controversially recruits the town’s refugees to boost numbers, much to the angst of club president Bull Barlow (John Howard). “The film is about empathy and Australians are good at empathy. The town has its own issues, while there are plenty of people with personal tragedies,’’ Damian says. “Sport is a platform and it’s the reason for everyone to come together.” Damian, who previously staged a one-man theatre show about his passion for footy, kicks a footy twice a week with a high-profile bunch of mates including Paul Kelly, Tim Rogers, Colin Lane, Frank Woodley and David Hobson. “Paul Kelly is a founding father from 20-odd years ago. We train but we never play because we don’t do the physical contact. It’s hilarious. We even have a presentation night and an AGM.” The idea for The Merger stemmed from Damian’s one-man show, in which he

CRAZY RICH ASIANS (PG) hhhkj Director: Jon M Chu Starring: Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Awkwafina Running time: 120 minutes In this modern Asian fairytale, Cinderella has already met her Prince. The problems begin when he takes her home to meet his family – bringing the differences of their respective upbringings into sharp relief. Economics professor Rachel Chu (Wu) is a successful, second-generation ChineseAmerican born to a self-sacrificing single mum (Tan Kheng Hua). Nick Young (Golding) is the oldest son and heir apparent to an obscenely wealthy dynasty of Singaporean property developers. During the pair’s smooth, year-long courtship in New York, however, Nick has somehow failed to mention this fact. So when they fly to Singapore for his best mate’s wedding, Rachel is utterly unprepared for the opulence to which her boyfriend is accustomed, not to mention the lengths his family will go to in order to scare off “foreign gold-diggers”.

Adding a more complex layer to this good-looking romantic crowd-pleaser are the couple’s cultural differences. Rachel is a multicultural hybrid (English is her first language). Nick might be a citizen of the world, but his roots are firmly in Asia, where family duties take priority

over contemporary Western values such as self-realisation. This allows Michelle Yeoh’s class-conscious Tiger Mom to be a much more nuanced villain than the classic evil step-parent. Based on Kevin Kwan’s novel of the same name, Crazy Rich Asians puts a new

The film is about empathy and Australians are good at empathy. Sport is the reason for everyone to come together played all the characters. On screen, the Bodgy Creek team features Queensland actors including Josh McConville (as Snapper) and comic duo Aaron Gocs (Porterhouse) and Ben Knight (Harpo). “Queensland is a big state full of largerthan-life personalities,” Damian says. He says the players sport some memorable looks, including Aaron Gocs’ mullet. “We were looking for a gentle giant to play Harpo and we found Ben.” A former teacher, Damian taught at Toowoomba Grammar School in the late 1980s where he also played footy – but always felt drawn to the stage. “I kept running away from the classroom,’’ he jokes. “The first year I tried to start to write and think about what I really wanted to do was the year I was in Toowoomba and wrote a column about the team for the university newspaper.’’ See Damian at a special Q&A screening of The Merger, Sep 5, Dendy Cinemas, Coorparoo. spin on a familiar story while showcasing Singapore as a stunning, ultra-modern backdrop. The film’s climactic sequence, for example, takes place on the jaw-dropping rooftop of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. Director Jon M Chu (Now You See Me 2) uses his genetically blessed cast to good effect in the first major Hollywood studio film to feature an all Asian or AsianAmerican cast since Wayne Wang’s The Joy Luck Club (1993). While the male characters acquit themselves handsomely enough, it’s the women who drive this narrative. Wu is terrific as the film’s plucky, down-to-earth protagonist. If Rachel is going to survive in Nick’s world, she’s going to have to practise the game theory she preaches back at NYU. “The key is playing to win, instead of trying not to lose,” Rachel tells her students. New York rapper-actor Awkwafina (Ocean’s 8) turns in another scene-stealing performance as Rachel’s eccentric former college roommate Peik Lin. Crazy Rich Asians is being touted as a breakthrough for cultural representation, but it’s also a wonderfully engaging romp. VICKY ROACH

How do I check my breasts? It’s important to check your breasts regularly. Everyone is a little different and the best person to know what’s ‘normal’ for you, is you. If you’re familiar with how your breasts usually feel, you’ll notice quickly when something isn’t right. 1. Lie down. Right hand examines left breast. Take your left arm behind your head and roll the body slightly towards the right side to centre the nipple and evenly distribute the breast tissue. You can put a folded towel under your left shoulder for support. With all four fingers flat, gently feel around the breast, then the centre/ nipple and up into the armpit. Repeat other side. 2. Stand facing a mirror and raise both hands above your head, then place both hands on your hips. Look for symmetry in movement and appearance. Look at both nipples and the skin. Examine once a month, 5-7 days after the start of your period is best. Discuss anything unusual with your GP.

BEAUTY

THREE OF A KIND

Back to beauty school Start afresh with good habits with this skincare regime for life ROAD TEST Leesa Maher WHAT: The Ultraceuticals Real Visible Results in 90 Days program (RVR90 for short) at Beauty on Latrobe, Paddington.

Lancome Advanced Genifique Yeux Light-Pearl Eye Illuminating Serum, $115, lancome.com.au

THE LOWDOWN: This 90-day regimen is designed to improve the look and feel of skin through prescribed skincare from the Ultraceuticals range, coupled with six in-salon skincare treatments spaced two to three weeks apart. It’s a commitment, in terms of finances and time, but nothing good is achieved without sacrifice – and that goes for a fresher complexion, too. BEST FOR: All skin types, since the regimen is geared to individuals. Whether you are a blemish-prone teen, or an (early!) 40something like me, battling fine lines and enlarged pores, this is the bomb. HOW IT WORKS: At my first appointment, therapist Shannon examines my skin with the help of a UV camera and a magnifying lens. There is pigmentation – plenty of it – and excess oil that is leading to blocked pores. In response, she prescribes a small suite of Ultraceuticals products for me to use at home. Nothing complicated. She then administers an Antioxidant Workout (aka microdermabrasion) to remove dead skin before topping up moisture levels with an ultrasonophoresis infusion – a soothing gadget that increases the absorption of active ingredients into the skin. THE SESSIONS: Shannon is a fountain of skin wisdom and over the following weeks and months, she examines my skin at each appointment and performs the necessary treatment to optimise results. As I grow in confidence with my skincare regimen, she adds more products to enhance results. My 60-minute appointments with Shannon are cornerstones, with visible results within days of each treatment (plumper, firmer, less red, improved hydration), but it’s the morning and night ritual with the Ultraceuticals products that do the hard yards. THE TREATMENTS: It seems there are myriad tricks in the Ultraceuticals range when it comes to skin ills. Over the 90 days I experience the Eventone Skin treatment

La Prairie White Caviar Illuminating Eye Cream, $505, laprairie.com.au

GOLDEN GLOW … A 90-day Ultraceuticals beauty program is relaxing and delivers results. with a vitamin A infusion (a powerful brightening mask); an Enzyme Power Peel and Healite LED Treatment to strip away dead layers; and an AHA Skin workout (a lactic acid peel). Microdermabrasion and ultrasonophoresis are regular “add-ons” to enhance the effects of treatments. I tolerate treatments, including the peels, without fuss and find them relaxing. The cuddly doonas on the treatment beds help, as do the cool tunes. No Enya. Yay. COST: Difficult to say, given treatments and products are personalised. But to give you a rough idea, an Enzyme Power Peel is $225. VERDICT: At the end of the 90 days, I pose for an “after” photo under the salon’s UV camera and the proof is there – a noticeable

reduction in pigmentation, particularly on my upper lip and cheek area. Skin is smoother, softer and more even in tone, and looks perfectly acceptable under a tinted moisturiser. Creams, serum and makeup glide on so much better than before. To maintain results, continued home care is essential. ANYTHING ELSE? I would recommend this course to anyone looking to improve the look and feel of their skin. I found the regimen was rather like joining Weight Watchers (without the horrid weigh-in moment) in that you are getting expert instruction on a regular basis and the chance to form some good habits that will deliver long-lasting results. beautyonlatrobe.com ultraceuticals.com

AT HOME

Sea change Coastal cottages on America’s East Coast inspired the transformation of this old charmer Tonya Turner When interior designer Angela Marks bought a rundown timber-and-tin home in Indooroopilly that had served as a sixbedroom student share house for 15 years, she knew she had her work cut out for her. Restoring the 1910 worker’s cottage to its former glory became a labour of love over the next six months before she finally moved in with her partner, their teenage son and their dog CJ earlier this year. Retaining and enhancing the home’s original features such as the double-hung windows, French doors, breezeways, VJs, hallway arch and hoop pine flooring was a priority for Angela. Worker’s cottages were built as affordable homes for working-class families in the early 20th century. Small but well-designed, they are part of Brisbane’s architectural history. When it came to the interiors, Angela wanted to introduce a New Englandcoastal style with influences drawn from Martha’s Vineyard, the affluent island south of Cape Cod in the United States. “After a visit to Martha’s Vineyard and New England, we fell in love with the relaxed and inviting cottages. Our vision was to infuse this style with a traditional Queensland worker’s cottage.” A rear extension with an open-plan design includes a new kitchen with butler’s pantry, dining room and second living space opening to an outdoor entertaining area. With space freed up in the original cottage, the floorplan was redesigned to include three bedrooms, an office, main bathroom, ensuite and lounge room.

“It’s perfect for entertaining friends and family. Having the main lounge and office separated from the rear living also allows for family members to have separate dedicated living spaces,” Angela says. Design elements used throughout the home include the white and grey walls,

We fell in love with the relaxed and inviting cottages. Our vision was to infuse this style with a traditional worker’s cottage plantation shutters, VJ panelling, black downlights and ceiling fans. Unique features include Spanish floor tiles in the entrance, bathrooms and office, and handmade subway tiles in the bathrooms. The original hoop pine flooring in the hallway and lounge room was sanded and stained to a darker hue and waxed. In the master bedroom, Angela had a bed head custom made in a bold floral design. Throughout the home, white and rattan furniture, wicker chests, custommade upholstered pieces and striped rugs create a sense of warmth and balance. Vintage handcrafted sailing ships, antique china and family heirlooms personalise the home. “We now have a home with light-filled rooms and inviting dedicated spaces,” Angela says. interiorsolutionsbrisbane.com Photography: Elouise van Riet-Gray Styling: Lana Caves

BOOKS

Easy reads for dad’s day Say it with words this Father’s Day with books that speak to his passions and pursuits KINGS OF THE ROAD: 50 CARS THAT DROVE AUSTRALIA Toby Hagon and Bruce Newton Macmillan, $50 This nostalgic tome would make the perfect Father’s Day gift for any motorloving dad. The book features Australia’s classic cars, from the 1909 Melbourneproduced Ford Model T to the recent VE Commodores. With the closure of so many of our car factories in the past decade, this book celebrates what made the Australian car industry great over the past century. Photos offer a snapshot of the eras represented by the 50 vehicles, which cover the greatest, bravest and most iconic. FIONA PURDON

THE EASTERN CURLEW

FATHERHOOD

Harry Saddler Affirm Press, $30

William McInnes Hachette, $30

Eastern curlews travel the world like backpackers, train like marathoners, and feast on coastal mudflats fast diminishing due to development – placing them at risk of extinction, Melbourne writer Harry Saddler reveals in this book. He traces their 10,000km annual migration from Arctic breeding grounds to Australia, with stopovers in South Korea and China. All the more amazing is that curlews can’t swim, so if they fall into the ocean from exhaustion, they die. Nature-loving dads will enjoy this portrait of a bird that flies a lifetime equivalent of the Earth to the Moon. ANDREA RIPPER

For a Father’s Day gift, this lighthearted read by author-actor William McInnes sure beats the five bags of cement and two of lime that his dad bought for the family Christmas presents one year. As William says, “It was an offer too good to walk away from”, and back then, men didn’t shop in supermarkets, unless they were widowers – as William came to know only too well. His gently humorous stories about growing up in Redcliffe and being a father come with cringeworthy photos that must have his children squirming – but maybe they’re used to it. ANDREA RIPPER

SLOW DOWN AND GROW SOMETHING Byron Smith and Tess Robinson Murdoch Books, $40 Planting, getting the best out of your soil and growing seedlings are just some seeds of gardening wisdom that underpin this guide. Sydney horticulturalist Byron Smith and his partner Tess Robinson tackle back yards, rooftops, courtyards and balconies, among plots of all shapes and sizes. Learn how to harvest and use the plants you grow by turning them into treats like fig and rosemary tart, or lemon, zucchini and rosemary bread. Gardening has never looked so luscious or accessible. Prepare to find your green thumb and love it. ANDREA MACLEOD

LAST WORD

Phil Brown He was wearing a saffron turban so the editor decided I was the perfect person to interview him. Somehow, Dadaji ended up staying at my house Ever had a guru? I’m not suggesting you should get one … I’m just asking. I was thinking about gurus the other night during a conversation about mentors. Mentors are different, though, because they don’t wear orange robes. When I was young and confused (as opposed to older and more confused), I tried to get a guru but it just never took. I wrote about this in my 2008 memoir Any Guru Will Do. There were plenty of gurus around the Gold Coast back in the 1970s and 1980s. My first attempt was when I attended an ashram at Miami. The guru at this ashram (a house with no furniture in it) was a swami who had a shaved head and looked like Curly from The Three Stooges, which may have been why I couldn’t take him seriously. One needed the right guru, according to an American friend of mine. He had a guru and suggested his

might suit me, too. His guru was Bubba Free John, who later became Da Free John, then Da Love-Ananda, Da Kalki, Da Avadhoota and Da Avabhasa. From 1991 until his death, he was known as Adi Da Love-Ananda Samraj or Adi Da. Weird, huh? I used to sit with my friend in his back yard in Surfers Paradise and he would talk about his guru for hours on end. I bought a few books by that guru, too, and I still have one. It’s called The Eating Gorilla Comes in Peace. The guru’s real name was actually Franklin Jones. Needless to say I never quite became a follower. I met another guru in Rockhampton of all places, in 1981. He was a member of the Ananda Marga sect and his name was Dadaji. At least he said his name was Dadaji. It might have been Bruce, for all I know. He turned up at our office at The Morning Bulletin newspaper one day to promote his talk at a local hall and

because he was wearing a saffron turban, the editor decided I was the perfect person to interview him. Somehow, Dadaji ended up staying at my house for a couple of nights, and while he was in Rocky he inducted me and gave me a secret mantra. I could tell you what it is but then I’d have to kill you. I’m afraid that didn’t take, either. When I moved back to the Gold Coast, I went to a talk by an Australian guru. At least he kept his real name. It was Barry Long. He was a former newspaper editor who’d had some sort of epiphany (or maybe just a nervous breakdown) and become a spiritual teacher. I attended his talk at a local hotel and the room was full. There were a lot of nutters around the Gold Coast in those days. I couldn’t take him seriously because every time he made a point, he held his finger up as if to say, f--- you. How can you follow a guru who flips you the bird? Just saying.

The large block presents a range of options for investors.” Burradoo Lodge is 807sq m in total and set on a block with established gardens, including trees and shrubs. The six apartments provide comfortable living with each offering two bedrooms, combined bathroom and laundry, and large open-plan living and dining area with built-in wardrobes throughout. Four of the apartments have balconies off both the living room and main bedroom. Two apartments have double side-byside garages, the others each have a single garage. There are also three visitor parking

spaces on site. Each apartment features interior details including carpeted living areas and bedrooms, tiled bathrooms, neutral-coloured walls and cabinetry and tiled balconies. There is intercom access to each apartment and an NBN connection. Less than 6km to Brisbane CBD, the complex is situated in a quiet, leafy street, back from the main road but close to all the sought-after suburb of Hamilton has to offer.

Riverfront retreat Inspired by the architecture from Frank Lloyd Wright and designed by awardwinning designer Donald Spencer, this striking property sits alongside the Brisbane River. Design features such as curved brick walls, extensive marble, leadlight windows and timber accents accentuate the expansive residence, which spans three levels and has four bedrooms and multiple living spaces. Ideal for family living or entertaining, the estate boasts established gardens, resort-style pools and a floodlit tennis court. Entry is on the middle, ground level of the house, via a sweeping staircase. Inside, the entire floor consists of lounge and leisure areas, including a billiards room with a bar and balcony, and a living room with a fireplace, while extensive floor-toceiling glass allows for water vistas and natural light. Each of the riverfront areas also offers direct access to a full-width marble balcony, which overlooks the grounds, pools and river. Highlights of the kitchen include beautiful tiled floors, stainless-steel

Luxury interiors continue on the upper level where the bedrooms are found, each oriented towards the river and featuring floor-to-ceiling glass doors to the balcony. The main bedroom also includes a dressing room and a huge ensuite. The three other bedrooms all have built-in wardrobes. The house also has a lower level rumpus room with a bar and circular bathroom.
