COSY COUNTRY TOWNS TO VISIT

As the cooler winter months descend upon us, there really is no better time to embark on a family road trip to one of the picturesque country towns surrounding Brisbane. With their scattering of cafés and pubs warmed by open fires, undulating green hills, colourful market stalls, and welcoming locals, below are some of the best cosy country towns to road trip to this winter.

SAMFORD

Distance from Brisbane: 22km

It may only be a 30-minute drive from Brisbane, but visiting the magical village of Samford will make you feel like you are worlds away from your city life.

The first stop on arrival for most families is The Store of Requirement, where you can enjoy a warming glass of Butterbeer while the kids explore the official Harry Potter merchandise. Afterwards, you can discover the local museum and heritage trail and visit the many craft stores and cafés located within the village.

Distance from Brisbane: 22km

Continuing on the main road north from Samford for 25km, you will discover the delightfully laidback township of Dayboro. Known by locals as ‘the town of yesteryear’, a visit to Dayboro will have you stepping back in time, with many historical buildings and stores standing proud.

A true country town which oozes charm and family-friendly fun, stop in for a bite to eat and hot chocolate at the Dayboro Bakery before checking out the local craft stores. Walk the heritage trail, visit the art gallery, or take a scenic drive along the winding roads to Mt Mee.

Distance from Brisbane: 100km

One of the more popular country towns along the Blackall Range Tourist Drive is Maleny. Its main street is lined with welcoming cafes and indie shops, and its hillsides with grazing locals. You can enjoy a farm and animal experience at Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World, sample some goodness at a boutique cheese store, or take a lazy stroll through the Sunday market. Nearby Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Rainforest is a stunning natural oasis filled with walking trails and views out to the Glasshouse Mountains.

Known for its chilly temps in winter, and occasional glimpses of snow, Stanthorpe is the perfect family road trip from Brisbane. DIY STRAWBERRY AND FRUIT PICKING BRISBANE

There is something special about picking fruit directly from the land in which it’s grown that makes it taste that little bit sweeter. In Brisbane, there are numerous farms and orchards that offer this hands-on experience, providing children with a lesson on where their food comes from, and giving them a plentiful supply of goodness to take home too.

Dates are subject to change and costs vary with each farm. Some farms also offer produce outside picking seasons. Always check individual farm social media pages before visiting to avoid disappointment.

Purchase your empty punnet from the store on arrival and fill it with fresh strawberries straight from the field. Afterwards enjoy a delicious strawberry dessert from the shop while the children unwind in the outdoor play area.

MCMARTINS FARM

This family farm has been operating from its picturesque rural location for over 25 years. Specialising in strawberries you can pick, the farm also grows custard apples, lychees and figs. Visitors can enjoy a lovely Devonshire Tea at the onsite café, while the kids can have fun in the playground.

ROLIN FARMS

Located near the Glasshouse Mountains, you can pick a punnet of strawberries and then continue your fix by purchasing one of their many strawberryflavoured items from the gift store. There is a playground for the kids and a flower nursery you can visit by appointment only.

THE LONGAN FARM

At this fully operational commercial farm you can pick a number of different and unique fruit varieties for your basket. Bring your own secateurs (or borrow some) and stock up on mangoes, dragon fruit and their signature crop - longans. Afterwards, spread a picnic out on the lawns and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

HELPFUL TIPS WHEN FRUIT PICKING

• Visit individual social media pages first to ensure the farms are open and welcoming visitors

• Dress for #farmlife. Even if the weather is fine, fruiting plants require a lot of water so the ground can still be muddy.

• Pack a plastic bag to store muddy shoes in for the drive home.

• Pack snacks. Fruit picking is hungry business even if they let you eat the spoils as you go (note: not all farms allow this, so check before you start snacking)

• Bring some wet wipes to clean sticky fingers, grubby faces and dirty limbs.

A very modern experience involving some of the oldest creatures that roamed the Earth, Brisbane’s Hologram Zoo will have you surrounded by and interacting with these ancient giants in a very realistic way. If you want to experience what it may have felt like to actually walk amongst the dinosaurs all those years ago, we recommend you give this encounter a try.

QUEENSLAND MUSEUM KURILPA

Roar into Dinosaurs Unearthed, the free, permanent exhibition at Queensland Museum Kurilpa to marvel at the massive Muttaburrasaurus and explore life-sized reconstructions, fossils, animations and more. Don’t forget to stop in at the Dinosaur Garden where you can stand beside giant T-Rex and Triceratops sculptures and learn all about dinosaur eggs. Currently, you can also explore ‘Jurassic World by Brickman’, which uses 6 million LEGO pieces to recreate some of the colossal creatures from the movie.

WHERE TO FIND DINOSAURS IN SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND

EATONS HILL VETERINARY SURGERY

While you are in the car, drive past the Eatons Hill Veterinary Surgery to catch a glimpse of the large T-Rex that adorns the front garden. Aptly named ‘Rex,’ this green creature is a favourite among the locals and is even known to don a Christmas hat during the festive season.

Get digging to discover a Australovenator also known as the large claw hunter in this fun activity at Walkabout Creek in The Gap.

AURA DINO PARK

Nestled in Nirimba on the Sunshine Coast is the fabulous Aura DIno Park The star attraction is the large ‘Aura-Saurus’ which children can climb through. Miniature dinosaur eggs are featured throughout the playground, and kids can even search for fossils in the archaeological digging pit.

DINOSAUR ZOO AT THE CUBE

Standing over two storeys high, Dino Zoo at the Cube at QUT will have you interacting with the most scientifically accurate portrayal of these creatures in the world. Marvel at giant dinosaurs, play the interactive screen activities, and give the archaeological dig simulator a go too.

RIVERDALE PARK

Touted as one of the best dinosaur playgrounds in Brisbane, Riverdale Park has it all - dinosaur footprints, eggs, sculptures, skeletons, and fossilsaplenty. Children will love exploring this Logan park finding the many dinosaurs scattered throughout the playground, scaling them, giving them a cuddle or perhaps hiding from them. You will be hard pressed to find a better dino themed playground in Brisbane.

CURRUMBIN WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

If you are willing to venture a bit further south of Brisbane, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the Gold Coast has its very own Extinction Trail. A permanent feature of the park, visitors can get up close with dinosaur displays and even download the Augmented Reality app to take their dinosaur experience to the next level.

DENMARK HILL CONSERVATION RESERVE

Dinosaur-obsessed children (and adults) can step back in time and view footprints and fossils which were discovered in the area many years ago. Historical and educational information can also be found within a Stegosaurus shelter.

WHERE TO FIND DINOSAURS IN SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND

AUSTRALIA ZOO

Famous for housing some of Australia’s most beloved native animals, Australia Zoo’s Robert Irwin was also a lover of the prehistoric kind too. So much so that he was gifted a different dinosaur sculpture for each of his birthdays when he was younger. These can now be found hidden throughout the zoo. How many can your family find?

Bring your bucket and brushes to Thornlands Community Park, where your budding palaeontologist can explore the ‘dinosaur dig’ sandpit and uncover a giant dinosaur fossil buried beneath the surface.

Escaping to the mountains from Brisbane is a welcome day trip at any time of the year. Going for a hike, enjoying a picnic, relaxing under the trees, or just soaking up the views are all perfect reasons to explore our nearby mountains.

MOUNT NEBO - BRISBANE

Mount Nebo would have to be one of the most accessible day trips from Brisbane, being only 45 minutes’ drive from the CBD. To make the trip more about the journey than just the destination, stop off at the informative Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre, hike the trail around Enoggera Reservoir, or picnic at Jolly’s Lookout where you are afforded panoramic views of the valley, Glasshouse Mountains, and Moreton Bay.

GLASSHOUSE MOUNTAINSSUNSHINE COAST

Chances are you have seen the Glasshouse Mountains when you have travelled between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. Seemingly rising out of nowhere, these imposing mountains can be beautifully captured at sunrise and sunset with a camera, or, if you want to get physical, complete one of strenuous, yet rewarding hikes at either Mount Ngungun, Mount Tibrogargan, or Mount Beerburrum.

Mount Glorious is situated within 28,500 hectares of lush vegetation and is home to a range of Australian animals, majestic strangler figs, and stunning rainforest scenery. On your visit, pack a picnic to enjoy in the peaceful surroundings, keep an eye out for wildlife (pademelons, snakes, lizards and birds), or stretch your legs on a trail such as the 2km Rainforest Circuit or the slightly longer Cypress Grove Circuit or Greenes Falls Track.

Pack up the bodyboards and go sandboarding down the dunes at Carlo Sandblow in the Great Sandy National Park. Even better - get there super early and watch the sunrise from this stunning location.

Dive beneath the surface in a yellow submarine off the coast at Mooloolaba. This 1 ½ hour, once-in-alifetime experience includes 30-40 minutes of dive time, spotting sea life along the way.

Spend the day in Noosa, where you can explore the beaches, ride the ferry, cruise the river, peruse the

Hastings Street shops, enjoy a bite to eat, or visit the botanic gardens.

If your family includes a four-legged friend, then don’t miss a visit to one of the Sunshine Coast’s many dog-friendly beaches or parks Coolum, Currimundi and Wurtulla Beaches are popular destinations.
