Brighton’s big free watersports festival Paddle Round The Pier is back on Hove Lawns this month. As well as surfing, paddle boarding, kite surfing and kayaking, there’s plenty of street sports on dry land, including skating, free running and mountain biking. Live music across the weekend features Jennifer Left, Fat 45, Carnival Collective and over a dozen more. Paddle Round The Pier takes place Sat 6th – Sun 7th, raising money for the RNLI, Winston’s Wish and Surf Action charities.

Independent college Dv8 Sussex celebrates 10 years of nurturing music, fashion, digital media and live event talent in the city with a birthday at the Blind Tiger on Fri 5th. Live music comes from ska sensations The Meow Meows, and the night features appearances by Dv8 students and staff, old and new, including MCs, musicians and producers. It’s a private event but if you went to Dv8, worked with them or just wish to join the celebration, contact sussexevents@dv8training.com

The first weekend of the month brings two diverse drink festivals to the city, a big one at Stanmer House and a boutique one at The Victory pub. Fullers of Chiswick, brewers of London Pride, present their Pride & Prejudice festival of beer and music at Stanmer House with eight live bands, 30 real ales, cider and food. The Victory caters for a different palette with its Cider & Sussex Cheese festival, also featuring live music and DJs. Both events run Fri 5th – Sun 8th.

Named after a collective intent on giving greater prominence to overlooked works from Queer Cinema, Eyes Wide Open is a mini fest of limited-release films in collaboration with Brighton & Hove Pride. Screenings include Judy Garland’s final cinematic warble I Could Go On Singing, a doc and discussion with activist Bette Bourne, a double bill devoted to Divine and an evening of shorts. Swivel your paws towards Eyes Wide Open Cinema on your favourite social networking portal for the latest additions to the line-up.

Local legends of roller derby – a full contact women’s sport on skates – the Brighton Rockers weren’t planning on taking on any more trainees until 2014. Perhaps prompted by recent results, which included a thumping in Glasgow and being knocked out of a London tournament by lower ranked Bristol, they’ve had a change of heart and are looking for a new intake of ‘fresh meat’ right now. Any proficient female skaters aged 18+ who fancy giving it a go should contact brightonrockers.com

The intriguingly named hiSbe (‘how it Should be’) is a new ethical supermarket set to open next month on London Road, once their crowd-funding scheme’s gathered some pennies. This social enterprise aims to ‘create a supermarket fit for the 21st century’ with ethical sourcing, good food and a futuristic design. Selling your standard household brands as well as local veg and loose wholefoods, if the prices are genuinely affordable we’ll be all over it like houmous on Ryvita.

Brighton’s Big Screen beach cinema returns to the lower prom next month, for a summer season of film and sports screenings. Expanding on its Olympics coverage last year, the programme mixes favourite blockbusters like Top Gun and Saturday Night Fever, cult movies and films with a local connection, such as Quadrophenia and the original Brighton Rock. The 2013 World Championships In Athletics from Moscow bulks up the sports coverage. Screenings are free but VIP tickets are also on sale.

After a fallow year, the Colour Out Of Space festival of experimental sound and art is set to return this November. In the meantime, organisers bring Thurston Moore (ex-Sonic Youth, now of Chelsea Light Moving) back for his second lowkey Brighton gig of the year on August 21st, in A Night Of Heliocentric Duo Exchange at the Blind Tiger. The duo performances will see Moore collaborate with COOS’ Dylan Nyoukis, Byron Coley with Savage Pencil and Karen Constance with Lauren Naylor.
