Background story 背景のストーリー
The site is located in Yulin, a city in Guangxi, which is famous for a local festival named DOG Meat Festival. Eating dog meat and litchi in order to celebrate the coming of summer is a traditional custom in Yulin.

夏を祝うために犬の肉を食 べることは、玉林では伝統的 な習慣であり。だから犬を食 物として扱うべきかどうかに ついての議論をもたらしてい ます。
And the festival is held on June 6th each year. While when the custom b e co m e a fe st i va l w i t h l a rg e r influence, more and more people call into question whether it is appropriate to treat dog as food.
Eating dogs' meat to celebrate the coming of the summer is a traditional custom in Yulin, which brings a hot debate on whether we should treat dog as food or not.
Dog is known as the most faithful and helpful friends in most occasions, while also being raised as food in Yulin. We can hardly tell the difference between pet dogs and dogs raised for food. And though many animal protectors take actions to stop these poor puppies from being treated as food, there is still no evidence to prove that it is inappropriate to eat dog meat.
More questions came out such as whether we should eat other animals likerabbits, which also been treated as pets while being regarded as food more widely.
Even more questions came out such as, if dogs are our friends rather than food, then what about rabbits. Also being treated as pets and friends, rabbits’ meat is even more widely spread.

The mayor of Yulin learn about the anti-Dog Meat Festival actions while stated his position that the festival is not going to be cancelled and appreciated its influence on local tourism industry.

Considering the hospital to be a memorial the same time, the shape of the building must be of special significance. The posture of a sleeping dog comes into mind, as a symbol of peace and comfort.

To make the shape of the building more reasonable, a research on the tails was planned to accomplish. I picked up three formal pets in China & Japan, Shiba inu, cats and house lizards.

The former three kinds of “friends” all have different kinds of tails. I selected the picture of them and summarize the graphic figure of them.

There is a hot trend in the design of hospital design for human, combining the nursery room designed for the old with the traditional hospital together.

The reason is that getting old always comes with the poor health condition and daily medical treat needs, which share a part of resource with the hospital. I also think that the adoption centre should be a part of the pet hospital after opposed to the truth of poor living conditions of retired working dogs.

Being old and unhealthy, the retired dogs seldom get adopted easily and with no specific institutions get in charge of them, most of them died in loneliness. Now they can live in the hospital enjoy the convenience medical treatment and having many friends, waiting for someone to bring them a home.

The changing section shapes of the visiting flow 断面の形を変える
The visitor flows passes by several different functional rooms;
Public exhibition & Recover Place for Hospitalized & Nursery Room for retired pets & Memorial place The size and shape of the sections changes along going. At the entrance it was tall and slim to be iconic and easy to identify. At the same time it is not covered to form an in-between space. Then the visiting tunnel gets wider but short, the pets can get to a little higher p l a t fo r m co m m u n i ca t i n g w i t h t h e hospitalized animals. And a much wider place allows both owners and pets to have a rest just watching the retired old dogs playing in the park on the roof. The terminal of the visiting tunnel is quite narrow which only allows owners stay close to their pets and enjoy a peaceful moment before they get the memorial space in the end.

Background Story 背景のストーリー
As the industry technology has reached a high state nowadays, the pre-built apartment becomes a hot topic, such as the theme of renovation and reuse of the containers. Meanwhile the pioneer of metabolism, also known as the one of the most famous Japan architects, Kisho Kurokawa, made his attempt of creating a prefabricated a n d g row i n g b u i l d i n g , t h e N a k a k i n Capsule Building, which is still worked as rented apartment nowadays.

The pre-fabricated buildings bring a new era of easy & short term construction period and the possibility of growing along the time. However when we focus on the apartment building, the space atmosphere sometimes weighs as much heavier as the construction. For traditional apartment buildings sometimes being boring and indifferent for using the most effective plan patterns and hard materials for structure purposes, is there any possibility of creating a soft and leisure living space? I still remember the first time seeing the city in the cloud in Doraemon for I have dreamed of living in the clouds when I was very young.

District Description 地区の説明
The site is located in Hongkou District, S h a n g h a i , w h i c h va r i o u s re s i d e n ce types of different time period well-worth researching. The area is surrounded by traditional Shanghai residence named Lilong with fabulous facade facing the street. As the site is a historical protecting area, the buildings preserved are of research values cannot be demolished at short notice, Bubble Apartment is possibly an assumption for the future. And the main target of the design is to create a new living method ignore the site restrictions. The site can be any place around the world.

Combination of two “ bubbles” 2 つの泡の組み合わせ
Apartment アパート
The single unit is a blend of two bubbles in different sizes mainly intend for space atmosphere, the boundary between outdoors & indoors, the boundary between working & rest places of a unit is soft and vague. The outline the unit looks resemble to an organic part in the nature world like cells, using the most industrial method to build a space less industrialized space as an attempt of soft living method. Count to five different types of unit is generated from the principle mentioned before.

The main public space at the ground and top floor, blend of some small units, play the major role of the public spaces in a community, with tiny library and coworking place in it. Moreover some single “bubbles” scatter in the apartment playing the role of community centre as well, working, chatting, yoga or even square dance can be taken place in bubbles.

Neighbors 㠊隣
Each unit is designed for a single family whose members share a private space together. Each floor is combined with 2-4 units, relatively separate unit strengthen the concept of neighbors. The neighbors share the public bubble and courtyard together. There is no need to emphasize the communication between them, let the resident encounter occasionally and naturally.

For structure purposes, the different units have to be matched in the vertical dimension to get enough contact surfaces allowing the transmission of force. In order to figure out the connection method, a lot of graphic research and model research have been accomplished before the determination of the final vision.

How to build
The force flow
The main material of the structure is light steel. The external and internal surface both made of membrane to respond to the theme of soft. Units can be easily assembled right before building, so that there is no need to worry about the transportation period.
The platform of each floor mainly intends to connect the communication core with each single unit, meanwhile play a sub-vital role in the structure. The main structure system is the unit itself, being piled up through one placed on another, a complete force flow get formed to allow the whole apartment coming out.

The elasticity of the membrane provides the admission for tiny deformation of the units, which helps the units get closely knit.
The external and internal surface is not the exactly same shape in order to provide enough room for the equipment, such as the water& electricity supply as well as the air conditioner.
Floor slabs and the communication core, made of concrete, can be half-processed in the factory and assembled in the site. Floor slabs have already saved the notch for installation of the bubble units.

Historical Background 歴史の背景
After the crystal night happened in 1938, the Nazi started their outrange on the Jews. Countless of Jews escaped from the Germany, where had be proved to be of great danger, and finding a shelter. As complex as the international situation was, lots of countries close the door behind them. However Shanghai, located in China, to g e t h e r w i t h few o t h e r co u n t r i e s , reserved a door for living for them, in other words, a vital chance for surviving.
When faced with national crisis, the Jews had been shut out by innumerable doors, while they never stopped struggling to get survived in the storm. They traveled around the world to find a single door saved for them. Right in the place they used to lived, a cartography museum is designed in memory of this history. The museum will hold exhibitions connected to maps, for example, Mona Hatoum’s works.

a. The whole district used to be Jewish refuge during the WWII, the site is located on the south edge of the GETTO; b. The area of the site includes a well-preserved Jewish-style building; c. The main road lead to the site has a continuous Jewish-style facade; d. A park is located on the southeast of the site just across the street.

Mona Hatoum Known as an installation artist who lived in London, Mona H a t o u m ’ w o r k e x p l o re s t h e definition of the boundary as well as the concept of space and there are always multiple readings to her work. The element of map and globe appear frequently in her work helping to present her idea.

Narrow entrance and plain facade 狭い入り口と地味な立面
The main entrance is in the street of Zhoushan Road famous for its continuous and well-preserved Jewish-style facade. As a newly building in the site, the museum is designed to use quite simple blocks and plain concrete facade in order to be modest in the site area. While the main entrance, high and narrow, looks like a crack with a sense of direction le a d i n g t o t h e m a i n a t r i u m o f t h e museum.

Th e wh ole mus eum is rela tively introverted in order to attract the visitors’ attention to the exhibits rather than the outside environment. While the corner of the street, one of the three newly built blocks, is someway transparent on the side facing the city road, to invite the passersby enjoying the fabulous exhibition at the same time.

Concern of Natural Illumination 自然の光
Slim windows on the roof provide a soft and slight diffuse reflection of sunlight. The same time about half meters distance is designed to be saved specially between the floorslab and facade, in order to let the sunshine getting through the floor and make the inner space not too oppressive.
About the Preserved Building 古い建物
The Jewish-style building within the site is transformed into a part of the museum. The upper two floors is the exhibition space for the maps related to the site space, which is also the end of the visiting flow. The ground floor is designed to be a café and souvenir shop.

Shadow of the Maps Enrich the Facade 影が立面を豊かにする
A mental truss designed according to the logics of the column net is added over the museum in order to cover the public space between the blocks.
Over the truss is covered by membrane with pattern of map on it. When the sunlight penetrates the membrane the shadow of map patterns will be left on the facade of the plain concrete facade.

Alterable doors 変更可能なドア
The door becomes an important element in the design. In the book " Doorway" written by Simon Unwin. The book illustrates a series of psychological phenomenon related to the door, such as the simple recognition of the "in& out" and the transition mentality when you are just about to get through a door. Meanwhile the different door like sliding doors and revolving doors create different atmosphere for the visitor. The alterable doors also help to form exhibition spaces suitable for all kinds of exhibits.

District Description 地区の説明
The site is located in Tianshui, Gansu Province, a small city located in northwest of China and the place where I grow up. The leading industry of Tianshui is tourism, for it has the cultural deposit of over 5,000 years history. On one hand countless tourists comes to visit the city every year, while on the other hand there is series of questions caused by the lack of citizen activities.
The site is a unique street with Ginkgo trees on the both side of it extended up to 500 meters. Someway it is the most important place for citizens but only in autumn and only last about half a month. The golden fallen leaves of the Ginkgo tree add a special atmosphere to the city which attracts bunch of people gathering here and the government put forward a special proposal that during the first two weeks in November the street will be pedestrian only in the evening, allowing the citizens enjoy the fantastic beauty of nature and have a leisure time after day’s work.
The inspiration of the unit shape is a lozenge, pushing its edge to help forming the space and finding out the connection between the human behavior.

Wander over the past 過去に戻る
Though the ‘Pedestrian Only Night’ have lasted for years, while the activity has not be well organized. To make it more attractive and an authentic citizen space with the inspiration of Muxin’s poem ‘wandering back to the past’, several activities which are fading away are collected to reappear in this certain occasion and certain period. Count up to eight different kinds in all: Kite making, Opera performance, Flower market, flip out and admire the stars, Gateball, Ballroom dance, Fallen leaves pool, Art exhibition. Meanwhile the design is about a series of City Furniture connected with the activities mentioned before which help to emphasize the space atmosphere. The units can be classified into 7 different kinds and three different materials. Only part of them is permanent and some kinds are only for the fallen season.

The discussion of the typology begins with the classification of the simple action could happen here: 1 Sit still 2 Stand still 3 Pass by 4 Lie down 5 Wander around 6 Sit and work 7 Stand and work Considering about the connection between the different units the original graphic shape is the same lozenge, the combination of two equilateral triangles, which bring the most possibilities of combination.
