Casino worker honored

OXFORD — Oxford Casino recently held its Third Annual Team Member of the Year Gala in honor of the exemplary employees who had been recognized throughout 2015 for achievement, attitude, willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty, and work ethic. Jack Sours, vice president and general manager, performed master of ceremony duties, and opened the event by saying to all in attendance, “I’ve worked in several casinos, and Oxford Casino’s team is, by far, the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. I’m exceptionally grateful to be a part of this team. You make this casino what it is. I thank you for that.” Two exceptional team members were named Team Member of the Year at the end of the evening and were each awarded $1,000 in cash, along with one week of paid vacation time and special, reserved parking for 2016. The Hourly Team Member of the Year award was given to Jason Gross, Maintenance technician, for habitually going beyond the call of duty for many, many team members and departments. Salaried Team Member of the year went to Holly Miele, Human Resources generalist, also for going above and beyond the call of duty by working long hours to complete difficult tasks. Bridgton resident David “Stormy” Hadley, a table games dealer, was a Team Member of the Month of November, and was nomiHADLEY, Page 3A

Main Street Variety closing out 37 years Joins Bridgton

By Gail Geraghty Staff Writer John Ridlon came from around the back of Main Street Variety, where he’d been doing his daily sandwich prep last week. Wiping his hands on his apron, he had a two-word answer when asked why he was closing up shop and selling the building. “Thirty-seven years,” he said. When he and partner Arnold Packard Jr. opened the Bridgton business in 1979, the 33 rpm records plastered on the walls and celebrity covers from old Life magazines seemed to fit right in.

into business together, Packard went off and joined the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department, leaving him with the day-to-day running of the business. Several of his employees over the years, which have included Kathy Frank, Terri Sanborn Nevells, Jenny Bardsley, Stacy Ziminsky and Brendan Bartley, have logged over 20 years of service. As the final days count down, many customers have waxed nostalgic on Main Street Variety’s Facebook page. “A part of the Main Street landscape will become a sweet memory,” said one customer. Another wrote, “I can’t believe it! It is the one thing (besides crunch cote from the Gazebo) that I look forward to when I come home on vacation! Main Street you will be missed!”

Nowadays, though — not so much. Ridlon said his health isn’t what it used to be, and 37 years of being tied to a seven-day-a-week sandwich shop — “The best pizza and subs in town” — and convenience store is long enough. Ridlon and Packard are selling the building at 144 Main Street, which also houses The Magic Attic, to James Burke and Joanie Wilson, owners of Vivo Country Italian Kitchen and Bar on Depot Street. The closing is expected to become official by early next week. The couple plans to do extensive renovations over the summer and open this fall, and although an eatery or pub is envisioned they have not yet decided on a final plan. Ridlon said wryly that only a few years after going
