Happy New Year! In this Jan/Feb issue there is plenty to look forward to. Mid-January, our Ely branch of Dream Doors have an exciting cookery demonstration with nibbles and refreshments throughout the day to show off their range of Neff ovens and, the following month, lasting almost all of February, the Cathedral will be hosting a unique exhibition of Ecclesiastical Embroidery. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all the new businesses supporting the magazine. Please tell them you saw them here when responding to advertisements. Also, remember that this magazine is here for you, so if you have an event or fundraiser going on we would love to help you publicise it. New Year: New Start? Oh No, not again ... New Year’s Resolutions are doomed to failure ... ok, that’s a bit harsh, but in my experience it seems to be the case. There has always been something magical for me about New Year, starting at 1 again: “This year it’ll be different: I’m going to lose 10lbs I’m going to earn 30% more I’m going to ...” Invariably life gets in the way and we fall off the wagon and back into a rut in days.

What did you do for the first time? What do you want more of? Then for 2015 create intensions rather than specific goals. So, rather than lose 10lbs, create a positive intension to make fit and healthy choices. This shifts the mind from a distant, perhaps unattainable or boring goal, to a moment by moment choice. In each moment you CHOOSE and it leaves you feeling in control, empowered and running your “...it leaves you in control, own life. 12 Cambridge Oarsman, Martin Whitworth in 1944

The world premiere of an historic film will be staged in Ely Cathedral on Saturday, 28th February – two days after the anniversary of the only Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race rowed off the Thames. A Strange Day at Queen Adelaide has been produced by the Diamond44 Community Group, who restaged the event on the Adelaide Straight of the Great Ouse on its sixtieth anniversary in 2004. Among the guests was Martin Whitworth, who rowed in the Cambridge boat in 1944 and 1945, the last of a series of unofficial wartime races 70 years ago. He is now president of the Isle of Ely Rowing Club, which was born out of the 2004 celebration. Martin said: “It brought back memories of what I remember as a very special time in my life even though there were severe deprivations because of the war.”

The 2004 event, which attracted 5,000 spectators, included many of the sights and sounds of war-time Ely. A similar experience of stepping back in time is promised at the premiere, scheduled for 7pm. hope that most people have walked through Jubilee Gardens that lead down to the river but I wonder if you have ever thought about how the gardens came in to being and how they are maintained.

he gardens were developed by East Cambs District Council with broad based public involvement and were opened by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh in February 2002. They were named Jubilee Gardens by popular acclaim to commemorate the Golden Jubilee year of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

his year we celebrated our 10th Green Flag award by sharing a cake with over one hundred people in the Market Place on a lovely sunny day in early November. These awards reflect the excellent partnership between the District Council and a large group of Friends who have created and maintained new borders such as the sensory garden, the dry garden and the winter garden. We have also provided a beautiful wisteria-covered pergola with seating next to a rose bed and shaded seating near the Ely Rotarians’ eel sculpture and we have contributed to the new surface in the children’s play area.

he Friends of Jubilee Gardens were formed in the following year to provide the opportunity for continued public involvement in the gardens and in 2004 the Friends in co-operation with the District Council applied for the prestigious Green Flag award.

Some of us enjoy fund raising, some prefer to take part in our monthly working parties (the next one is on 11th March from 9.30am) but there are many other friends who like to support the gardens less actively by paying an annual subscription of £5. 6 Over the years, I have found that the making of New Year’s Resolutions is a time to sit down and think about what I would like to change. So this year, and as an owner of both Solar hot water and Solar electricity systems, I will be resolving to make more use of what I have and to reduce the waste from everyday living. I hope in turn, this will reduce my outgoings and decrease my carbon footprint a little more. So, in keeping with both the theme of this column and the New Year we are entering, here’s my personal Top Ten energy saving New Years resolutions.

Use more hot water. Lots and lots of Hot water. As a Thermal Solar System owner, I have an abundance of it, yet still we shower. From now on, I’m having 3 baths a day. The water is heated up free of charge, so why should I worry!

Use more electricity during the day. have loads of free electricity to use, about 2,000 kwhs a year on my little 8 panel Solar PV system at home, so I’m going to tune into it a bit more and make bigger savings on my bills.

Use the money, my energy company give to me, to pay the bills for the small amount I have to pay for when it’s dark!

Smile and say thank you to everyone who has not got solar yet. After all, those without are paying for those with, so why not be thankful and show my appreciation.... THANK YOU!

I will also wire my air conditioning unit to the solar system so I get free air con when producing enough energy. I don’t want it all going back down the grid, I want to use as much of my own energy as possible!

Use free electricity to pump free water around the garden. I have all this free water collected, and all this free electricity, so with a few hoses, I can rig up a system that pumps water to the places we would normally have to carry watering cans to.

My final New Year’s resolution is to explain the benefits of solar without harping on about the awesome 15% returns most people are getting on their investment.

rom 4th to 28th February Ely Cathedral will be hosting a unique exhibition of Ecclesiastical Embroidery in partnership with the Royal School of Needlework. ‘For Worship and Glory’ will include over 60 impressive displays of significant pieces of needlework which have been worked on by the Royal School and which form part of their own collection housed at Hampton Court Palace.

ne of the many highlights of the exhibition is six of the twelve Litany of Loreto panels which were bequeathed to the RSN by a convent in Sussex and are rarely on display to the public. Other pieces include depictions of theological figures and symbols using

a wide range of threads and embroidery techniques, as well as rare examples of white work altar cloths, burses, stoles and chalices. Artefacts from Ely Cathedral’s own collection including a Mediaeval Cope, an 18th century gold vestment set and the recently restored white altar frontal will also be on display. Thanks to the Society of Antiquaries, we are delighted to be able to exhibit an 11th century gilded bronze chasuble pin, originally from the tomb of Archbishop Wulfstan at Ely, and gifted to the Society in 1771.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is hoping to encourage those who live or work within five minutes of the Egremont Street on-call fire station to consider taking up the role to help out their community. On-call firefighters are fully trained professionals who save lives in their communities alongside their day-to-day jobs and home lives. They carry a pager and respond to emergency incidents as and when they happen. They are men and women who may have other jobs and are able to provide evening, daytime or weekend cover. They receive an annual wage to reflect the time they commit plus additional payments for attending training and incidents. The firefighters at Ely come from a variety of backgrounds and include parents, engineers and businessmen. The one thing they all have in common is the desire to provide an emergency service to their community. The crew does not just attend fires; road traffic collisions are common place, especially on the area’s rural roads, and they can also be called upon to assist with a variety of other incidents including animal rescues. Owing to the location of Ely Fire Station, the crew will often be called to assist at larger incidents all over the county, including in Cambridge, Fenland and sometimes over the border in Suffolk, to support a large scale operation or an incident that could be ongoing for a long period of time. ullying describes abusive, intimidating or aggressive behaviour towards children, teenagers and adults, it typically forces the victim to do something against their will or subjects them to name calling and taunting.

yber bullying is on the increase and is very common among teenagers in the form of hurtful emails, text messages and instant messages that are sent and designed to create fear or taunt victims. The perpetrator can remain anonymous or disguise their identity, hiding behind a screen or keyboard.

he effects of bullying are evident but let’s look deeper at why the bully feels the need to intimidate their victims; Sometimes, it’s about how they feel about themselves inside, maybe they feel insecure, maybe they have been the victim themselves or maybe they have low selfesteem. These feelings don’t excuse bullying behaviour and the bully may not be aware of these emotions on a conscious level.

ullies can use ‘differences’ to target their victims, i.e. ‘too good at something’, ‘not very good at something’, the victims sexuality etc. They then use these differences as an excuse to project their feelings and emotions about themselves onto their victims using aggression and intimidating behavior. They may have felt unimportant in their environment, they may be lonely or be subjected to peer pressure and join in with taunts to stay on the right side of their bullying peers. It’s not the victim that has the problem, it’s clearly the

bully, they may feel angry, jealous, insecure, unhappy or envious, all these emotions can be the driving force to make a bully a bully. Communication and talking is always a positive way forward to exclude bullying.

They can hide behind masks of authority, superior knowledge, money or other types of power. Some are very good at finding excuses to justify their behavior.

he best strategy in dealing with any type of bullying is to be aware of how you respond to the bullying behavior. Stand up to the them, choose not to be a victim and don’t back down. A bullies bad behavior is entirely their responsibility, not yours. Your responsibility is to protect yourself from the emotional, social or physical harm that a bully intends to cause.
