Does it feel like Christmas yet? Is there snow on the ground? Do you hear Christmas songs when you go outside? Are people selling carp on the streets? Are you getting ready to make potato salad? Well, Christmas traditions are very different in other countries. In this issue of RR, you can learn about how people celebrate Christmas in the UK and US, and in the comic strip on the back cover, you can even read about a very old December tradition. You can also learn about some countries in Africa where people speak English, learn about Disney films and, of course, help some people in a very snowy part of the Land of Awesome. Finally, you can read our article about Christmas charities in the UK. Remember, when it’s cold and dark outside, it’s a time to celebrate and be with your friends and family - and to help people who aren’t as lucky as you. It’s that time of year again. Christmas is coming. People in Britain and America love Christmas. Here are some of the ways they celebrate1.

Everyone says that presents are not the most important2 thing about Christmas. Don’t say that to children. Christmas has a long tradition of giving presents. It is a birthday party, you know. But who brings these presents? In the UK, presents come from Father Christmas. In the US, they come from Santa Claus. These are two names for the same person. They are both Saint3 Nicholas. Saint Nicholas was from Turkey (= Turecko). He loved children and he loved helping them. So it’s logical for him to bring them toys at Christmas. The Dutch (= holandský) people who lived in America called Saint Nicholas Sinterklaas, and that’s where the name Santa Claus comes from. Santa Claus and Father Christmas bring presents to good children. They come at night on December 24th. When the children wake up on December 25th, the presents are under the Christmas tree and in stockings. Then the fun begins. In the Czech Republic we celebrate Saint Nicholas’ name day on December 6th.

In America and the UK, the big Christmas Christmas meal is on December 25th. pudding Usually it’s turkey, but some people have goose (= husa), duck (= kachna) or ham. There are also lots of vegetables, like potatoes, sweetcorn4 and Brussels sprouts5. But many families in the US don’t cook for Christmas. They get Chinese food from a restaurant. For dessert6 in America there is often pie7. In the North, apple pie is very popular. People in the South really like pecan8 pie. In the UK for dessert there is Christmas pudding9. This is a special cake with lots of good things in it. There are spices10 and lots of dried11 fruit. The Brits also eat mince pies*12 at Christmas.

In many countries Christmas holidays are December 24th, 25th, and 26th. But not in the US and UK. In both the UK and US, Christmas Eve (December 24th) is not a holiday. People have to work like any normal day. December 25th (Christmas Day) is a holiday in both countries. That is the day when people celebrate Christmas with presents and food. December 26th is also a holiday in the UK. It is called Boxing Day*.

Charity1 is a part of Christmas for many people in the UK and US. There’s a saying2 in English that “Christmas is about giving, not just getting”. One of the most famous English books about Christmas, A Christmas Carol3 by Charles Dickens, is all about a selfish4 man who learns that giving to people is better than taking from them. There are many ways5 that people give money to charity. Here are two traditional Christmas ones in the UK:

Singing Christmas carols started many hundreds of years ago in churches (= kostely). It became popular to sing carols outside in the streets for other people in the 19th century. Then they give the money to charities to help people who need it.

cape town Hi. My name is Sarah. I’m 11 years old and I live in Cape Town. Cape Town is in South Africa and it is the country’s second biggest city. The biggest city is Johannesburg. I love living here. I think Cape Town is one of the most beautiful places in the world. I live with my mum and dad, my sister Lily, and our two dogs, Patch and Rocky.

We call it Cape Town, but it’s really a city - more than three million people live here. Most of the people here are black but there are a lot of white people too. South Africa is a very multicultural1 place. We have 11 different languages. Most people know English, but the first language here is Afrikaans, which comes from

Many Disney films are fairy tales6, but there are also lots about animals. Dumbo (1941) is a flying elephant. Bambi (1942) is a deer7. One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961) is about a big family of dogs. And Zootopia (2016) has all of the animals in a zoo, of course. Disney films always have a happy ending.
Walt Disney was born on December 5th, 1901. He loved drawing cartoons8 and making films. He made the first cartoon with sound9, called Steamboat Willie (1928), and he played the voice10 of Mickey Mouse. Today the Walt Disney Company (= společnost) makes films and toys for millions of people, and has theme parks11 in California, Florida, Paris, Japan, China, and Hong Kong.

There are four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. But why are the days long in summer and short in winter? To find the answer, we have to look at the sun. Going Around
Our planet, the Earth, goes around the sun. It also turns2 on its axis3. But the axis isn’t straight4 up and down. In winter the north half is facing5 away from6 the sun, so it’s not in the sunlight7 as much. In summer it’s facing towards8 the sun, so there are more hours of sunlight.
We’re Not Closer in Summer
Some people think it’s warm in summer because we’re closer to the sun, but we’re not. The north half of the planet is actually a little bit further away from the sun in summer.
Long and Short Days
The day with the most hours of daylight9 is called the summer solstice. It’s normally on June 21st in the Northern Hemisphere (= severní polokoule). This is the first day of
summer. In the Czech Republic, daytime is almost 16.5 hours long. But after the solstice the days start to get shorter. There is another solstice on the calendar: the winter solstice. It’s normally on December 22nd in the Northern Hemisphere. This is the shortest day of the year and it’s the start of winter. The day is very short: only eight hours of daylight. But after the solstice the days start to get longer again.
Half and Half
Between the summer and winter solstices, there are two equinoxes10. They happen in spring (normally on March 20th) and in autumn (normally on September 22nd). On an equinox, the sun is out for half the day, so the day and the night are the same length.
