I’m reminded how this time of year always brings with it a sense of reflection, renewal, and connection. In this issue, we take you on journeys both near and far—from the tranquil elegance of Barnsley Resort and the wild beauty of Espíritu Santo, to the dreamy shores of Tulum, and the stunning beauty of Lake Geneva. Each destination invites us to pause, savor, and be inspired.
This fall also gave me the opportunity to sit down with Elyce Arons for a heartfelt luncheon where she spoke candidly about friendship, resilience, and navigating grief as she launched her new book,
We Might Just Make it After All: My Best Friendship with Kate Spade. Her reflections remind us that true connection is as vital to our well-being as travel and discovery.
We also shine a spotlight on our city’s most beautiful volunteers and organizations making an extraordinary impact, including the American Cancer Society, Mission of Yahweh, and PetSet, as well as the fresh, inspired designs of Anna Irion.
Here’s to a season of exploration, compassion, and community.

A RECORD-BREAKING NIGHT OF PURPOSE AND GENEROSITY: HOUSTON CHILDREN’S CHARITY RAISES $9.4 MILLION

Houston Children’s Charity’s 28th Annual Gala, “If You’re Gonna Play in Texas,” chaired by Frances Moody Buzbee and Tony Buzbee, was an unforgettable celebration of compassion and community, raising an unprecedented $9.4 million for Houston’s children. The evening featured a record 98 wheelchair-accessible vans donated through the Chariots for Children program, with Jana and Richard Fant contributing 30 of them. Longtime title sponsors Porsche River Oaks and Porsche West Houston once again went above and beyond, donating a Porsche 718 Boxster S and exclusive driving experience—fueling brighter futures for children across Houston.

The third annual Leaders & Legends benefiting the Mission of Yahweh was an inspiring evening at The Post Oak Hotel drawing more than 430 guests and raising over $650,000. Event Chairs Leila Perrin, Beth Wolff, and Cynthia Wolff, along with Honorary Chairs Jody Merritt and Christine Johnson, celebrated a record-breaking night of generosity.
Four Houston community leaders—Nichole and Benny Agosto, Jr., Rose Cullen, Sidney Faust, and Winell Herron—were honored for their dedication to helping homeless women and children.

Emcees Frank Billingsley and Ernie Manouse led the evening, which featured elegant décor by Let It Fly and lively auctions energized by Johnny Bravo. Guests bid enthusiastically on luxury items, including Nini Jewelry and a Houston Texans travel experience.
Nashville hitmakers Phillip White, Brice Long, and Marla Cannon-Goodman provided live entertainment, performing songs they’ve written for Garth Brooks, George Strait, and Chris Stapleton.
Funds raised will support new housing and vital programs that empower women and children to rebuild their lives.

The 38th Annual American Cancer Society Houston Cattle Baron’s Ball, presented by Texas Oncology, raised over $1.5 million for cancer research and patient support. Held at Hilton Americas-Downtown, the “Lone Star Legends” event featured country icon Tanya Tucker, spirited auctions, pig races, and casino games. Chaired by Laurel Bashaw, Debbie Hance, and Robin Klaes, the evening honored local champions while reminding guests of the lifesaving impact of the American Cancer Society’s mission.

Houston’s beloved Le Brunch fundraiser once again proved the power of community, raising nearly $1 million to support local animal rescues. Proceeds benefit the organization’s granting program, which awarded over $400,000 last year to 93 shelter and rescue partners across Texas. Thanks go to all donors and co-chairs Tena Lundquist Faust, Tama Lundquist, and Kirby Matocha Edmunds for their tireless dedication.

Makiin Thai Restaurant marked its 4th anniversary with an unforgettable evening at the Legacy Gala on October 15, 2025, in Houston’s River Oaks. Hosted by founder and owner Lukkaew Srasrisuwan, the star-studded celebration featured exquisite Thai culinary samplings, captivating traditional dance performances, and vibrant fashion showcases—honoring both Thai heritage and Houston’s cosmopolitan spirit in true Makiin style.

More than 350 supporters gathered at the Royal Sonesta for The Women’s Fund’s 15th Annual Rockin’ Resiliency Luncheon, celebrating strength and empowerment under the theme “Bloom Beyond Limits.” Co-Chairs Paula Sutton and Nadia Tajalli led the afternoon, which raised $250,000 to support health education and resiliency programs for women and girls. The event also honored longtime supporter Philamena Baird with the Sue Trammell Whitfield Award for Resiliency, applauding her impactful commitment to Houston’s community.

Wild Tunes’ “Melodies of Gratitude” concert raised a record $68,000 to support homeless animals through BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions and Special Pals. Founded by 10-year-old Yuvaanh “Yuvi” Agarwal, the Houston nonprofit brings live music to shelter pets to ease their stress. Nearly 700 dedicated volunteers from across the United States—including representatives from Puerto Rico and Guam—gathered in Washington, D.C. for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network’s (ACS CAN) 2025 Leadership Summit and Lobby Day. Among them was Houstonian and ACS CAN Texas volunteer, Sonia Soto, who joined fellow advocates to make their voices heard on critical cancer-related issues before Congress.
ACS CAN, the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, organizes this annual event to unite survivors, caregivers, and community leaders in a shared mission: to reduce the cancer burden through smarter public policy. Over the course of several days, volunteers received advocacy training, engaged in strategy sessions, and met directly with lawmakers and their staff to discuss legislative priorities that will have a direct impact on cancer prevention, treatment, and patient care.
This year’s advocacy efforts centered around three urgent priorities:
1. Increase Cancer Research & Prevention Funding in Fiscal Year 2026– Advocates urged Congress to support the highest possible funding increases for cancer research at the National Cancer Institute and cancer prevention programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With more than 2 million Americans projected to be diagnosed with cancer this year, greater investment in research and prevention is crucial to saving lives.
2. Support Cancer Prevention, Early Detection and Screening - Passing the Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) Screening Coverage Act – Volunteers pushed for final

passage of this bipartisan bill, which would ensure Medicare coverage for innovative multi-cancer early detection tests once approved by the FDA. These tests have the potential to identify multiple cancers at earlier, more treatable stages, giving patients better chances for survival.
3. Support Affordable Access to Health Insurance - Extending Healthcare Tax Credits, with premium tax credits from the Affordable Care Act set to expire at the end of 2025, ACS CAN advocates highlighted the importance of extending these provisions to maintain access to affordable healthcare for millions of Americans, including cancer patients and survivors who often face financial hardship due to treatment costs.

For Sonia, this year’s Lobby Day carried a special significance. Last August, she lost her dear friend Sarah Koller after her second battle with breast cancer. Sarah’s passing deeply affected Sonia, who said her friend’s courage and determination continue to inspire her advocacy. “Sarah was vibrant, strong, and brave. Losing her
was devastating, but it also strengthened my resolve to speak out,” Sonia shared. “Her story reminds me why prevention, research, and access to care matter so much. No family should have to endure this kind of loss.”
During her time in Washington, Sonia met with Senator Ted Cruz and staff representatives from Senator John Cornyn, Congressman Troy Nehls, and Congressman Wesley Hunt, sharing both her personal connection to cancer and ACS CAN’s policy priorities. “It’s important that lawmakers hear directly from constituents about the real-life impact of their decisions,” she said. “We need champions in Congress who will stand up for cancer patients and survivors.”
The Summit and Lobby Day culminated in Lights of Hope, ACS CAN’s signature fundraising and awareness event. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the moving display, which features thousands of lit bags—each decorated with the name of someone impacted by cancer—lining Constitution Gardens on the National Mall. On September 16, 2025, the display once again shined as a tribute to survivors, a remembrance of loved ones lost, and a symbol of the ongoing fight against cancer. Sonia honored her late friend Sarah with a bag in the display, ensuring her legacy lives on in the collective call to action.
Through her participation, Sonia joined a nationwide effort to ensure that cancer remains a top priority for lawmakers. The passion and persistence of advocates like her demonstrate the power of grassroots voices to influence public policy and create a future where fewer families face the devastating impact of cancer.

Allow me to introduce our radiant new Billboard Bride for Bridal Extravaganza-LaYauna Bonds. She perfectly embodies the modern bride: ambitious, creative, and a whole lot of fun!
A Sam Houston State University graduate with a degree in Marketing, LaYauna transformed her creativity into a fulfilling career as a social media and digital marketing specialist for a non-profit organization, allowing her to connect with her community, and make a positive impact through her work.
Aside from her professional career you’ll find her shining in front of the camera as an actress and content creator, sharing her passion through fun how-to videos, uplifting content and entertainment that empowers her followers.
While in college, LaYauna met Rob, the love of her life. From that moment, their connection only grew stronger. LaYauna had always dreamed of a surprise proposal—but she’s not one to be easily fooled! It actually took Rob four tries to finally pull off the perfect surprise.
One night, she was excited about dinner at her favorite Brazilian steakhouse (“I love me some steak,” she laughs) and had no clue what was coming. Surrounded by family, the evening took a magical turn when Rob got down on one knee, her mom and brother holding up a sign behind him. In that perfect moment, LaYauna’s dream came true—she said yes!
First stop – Bridal Extravaganza!
Just a month after getting engaged, LaYauna made her way to the Bridal Extravaganza Show at the George R. Brown Convention Center, looking for inspiration and to get her creative juices flowing. After attending the show three times she has become quite the Bridal Extravaganza pro! Her first time was with her mom after her engagement, then as an influencer with exclusive access to the pre-show before it opened to the public, and later at the Woodlands Show, where she brought her fiancé along for the fun.
By a twist of fate, LaYauna found her wedding planner just as she was about to leave the show. She hadn’t planned on hiring one but soon realized it was one of the best decisions she could make. “There is so much you don’t know about organizing your wedding,” says LaYauna. “Having a planner is a priceless resource to have all of your questions answered from one source.”
LaYauna shares that it’s been important to involve her fiancé every step of the way and lean on him for support when making decisions for the big day. After all, when it comes down to it, the wedding is really about the two of them. The couple are set to marry April 13th 2026, at the stunning venue, Chateau Novelle in Houston.
During the Billboard Bride photoshoot, LaYauna lit up the camera, radiating pure joy and excitement—as if she were getting a magical preview of her own wedding day.
Her look was effortlessly elevated by A. Simone Allure, who styled her hair into a graceful updo with soft waves framing her face. Makeup artist Jessica Kennedy enhanced LaYauna’s natural beauty with a flawless, glowing finish that perfectly complemented her radiant smile.
With a breathtaking selection of gowns from Ventura’s Bridal Fashions, LaYauna brought three distinct bridal looks to life, each reflecting her unique style, grace, and radiant personality. To complete every ensemble, she carried a romantic bouquet of blush pink roses and tulips, thoughtfully designed by Christina May at Kroger Florals, adding a dreamy finishing touch that tied every look together.
The Parador was the perfect setting, a timeless Houston gem built in 1928. From its immaculate gardens to the arched windows and one-of-a-kind ceremonial stage, the venue offered a setting as elegant and enchanting as LaYauna herself.

Winter has a way of slowing the world down. Streets quiet, snow flurries gather on the sidewalk, twinkling lights soften the edges of dim afternoons, and the chill in the air invites us to stay inside with our loved ones. It invites us into our kitchens, our softest sweaters, and the warm embrace of a cozy drink. A well-made cocktail isn’t just a beverage; it is a ritual. A steaming mug or a garnished glass becomes a companion for conversation and celebration.
Just as the season encourages us to layer, accessorize with gloves, hats, and lean into fuzzier textures, winter cocktails embrace deeper flavors like spices, bitters, warmth, and nostalgia. Cinnamon reminds us of the softness of cashmere scarves. Bourbon keeps you warm like your most reliable winter wool coat. Mulled wine reminds us of firelight against a velvet Christmas party dress. Winter fashion and winter cocktails go hand in hand; comfort paired with timeless style.
As temperatures dip, let this guide be your helper for crafting cocktails that warm the body and styling winter looks that warm the spirit.

A slow-sipping classic with deep flavors, this cocktail is perfect for sitting by the fire side with your favorite person.
Ingredients:
2 oz bourbon
1 oz pure maple syrup
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Orange peel
Cinnamon stick
Directions:
Stir bourbon, syrup, and bitters with ice. Strain into glass over one large cube. Express an orange peel over the drink and garnish with the peel and a cinnamon stick.
This cocktail as an outfit:
A rust-colored turtleneck, gold jewelry, and soft wool trousers—warm, understated, sophisticated.

INTERIOR

COCKTAILS:

This drink is Rich, spiced, aromatic and is a winter must. This drink is such a holiday classic that it is known around the world and is referred to by many names such as Glühwein in Germany, Glögg in Scandinavia and Vin Chaud in France.
Ingredients:
1 bottle red wine
1 orange, sliced
3 cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
1 star anise
¼ cup honey
Splash of brandy
Directions:
Warm ingredients on low heat for 20–30 minutes. Ladle into your holiday mugs.
This cocktail as an outfit:
A velvet wrap dress or jewel-toned knit dress, glamorous yet cozy, just like the drink.

Comforting and bright with alpine herbs. The Alpine Hot Toddy gives a nice seasonal twist to the classic drink.
Ingredients:
1.5 oz whiskey
1 tbsp honey
½ oz lemon juice
Hot water
Fresh rosemary sprig
Directions:
Combine whiskey, honey, and lemon in a mug. Add hot water, stir, and garnish with rosemary.
This drink as an outfit:
Layer a tailored wool coat over a cable-knit sweater, classic mountain lodge style.

A seasonal twist on a trendy drink. Pair it with gingerbread cookies or s’mores by the fire.
Ingredients:
1.5 oz vodka
1 oz coffee liqueur
1 oz vanilla syrup
1 oz chilled espresso
Directions:
Shake vigorously with ice until frothy. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with three espresso beans for health, wealth and happiness; dusted with powdered sugar.
This cocktail as an outfit:
A brown satin blouse, dark high-waisted trousers, and statement earrings, perfect for holiday dinner at a nice restaurant with friends.

Sweet childhood nostalgia for grownups. It is only right that you sip this surround by friends or family, cozied up by an outdoor fire. You also can leave the alcohol out of this recipe and enjoy a warm cup of hot coca with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
Ingredients:
1 cup hot cocoa
1 oz dark rum or bourbon
½ oz Irish cream
Whipped cream + chocolate shavings if desired
Directions:
Mix ingredients, top generously, and serve in your coziest mug.
This drink as an outfit:
An oversized Sherpa-lined cardigan, leggings, and hand-knit socks.
Winter cocktails create perfect opportunities for lasting memories in the season; slow mornings, festive nights with friends, intimate evenings staying warm indoors. Whether you’re hosting a holiday party or unwinding after a snowy day, these drinks are a great way to wined down.

Just as mixologists build flavor in layers, winter fashionistas build outfits the same way. Here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind when styling your wardrobe this season.
Having these pieces in your closet not only make it easy to build your outfits but also keep them practical for the cold winter weather; soft turtlenecks, thermal tees, fitted ribbed knits are all your essential winter basics. Consider layering a chunky sweater with a V-neck neckline on top of your turtleneck, or a thermal long sleeve tee underneath a one of your favorite swoop neck tank tops.
That tailored blazer you love so much that is sitting in your closet and you are unsure of how to style it; the winter is it’s time to shine. I suggest wearing it as a mid-layer piece on top of your basic long sleeve. Especially if you live somewhere that does not get snowy weather but still has a crisp chill, this allows you to stay warm without overdoing it and still being stylish. A tailored blazer is also great because it allows you to take off your heavier coat and still stay warm.
Your statement piece: a wool coat, puffer jacket, faux fur trench, or a capelet with a fur collar to keep you warm. Topping off your outfit with a caplet screams functional fashionista and we recommend shopping the Anna Irion collection. Her design, the Anna Baby offers a warm, practical yet stylish and elegant assortment of caplets and capes that are perfect for winter outings and parties.
Winter is a season for the senses, soft fabrics, glowing lights, deep flavors, and still moments. Cozy winter cocktails invite us to embrace this time with intention. Pair them with your favorite winter fashions and let each drink be a ritual, each outfit a celebration, each evening a memory in the making.
Here’s to a season of warmth from the inside out.

A designer whose mastery of textiles bridges science and style, Michelle Anna Irion Wrubel has built a career on turning natural fibers into timeless statements of elegance. From Manhattan’s labs to Houston’s ateliers, her work celebrates both innovation and enduring beauty.
For Houston designer Michelle Anna Irion Wrubel, textiles are more than fabric — they’re storytelling threads woven through chemistry, craftsmanship, and couture. From her early days experimenting with fibers to dressing the refined women of today, Wrubel’s work reflects a lifetime dedicated to beauty, science, and timeless design.
Wrubel’s fascination with textiles began in high school, where her creativity was already earning awards. She went on to earn dual degrees — a Bachelor of Science in Fashion Merchandising and Design and an Associate degree in Textile Chemistry — from the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. “I worked summers and fast-tracked my degrees,” she recalls. “I had to move quickly — I had school loans, and I was eager to start creating.”
Her first professional role placed her at the forefront of innovation. Working for ICI Chemical, later acquired by DuPont, Wrubel joined the team that helped develop Gore-Tex, the groundbreaking fabric that transformed the ski and outerwear industries by being both waterproof and breathable.
From there, she moved to Forstmann Woolen Company, one of the world’s largest producers of fine woolens. “It was like finding my people,” she says of her decade-long tenure there. As the youngest and only female design director, Wrubel oversaw collections for fashion powerhouses including Liz Claiborne. She developed fabrics that defined 1990s tailoring — refined plaids, sleek wools, and suiting materials that married tradition with innovation.

Her expertise in color and fabric forecasting soon led her to establish her own consulting firm. Advising top global brands a year and a half ahead of each season. That same technical mastery and design intuition became the foundation of her own label, Anna Irion.
Her debut pieces were luxurious capelets made from natural fibers like wool, cashmere, and angora — wearable works of art that drape elegantly and endure season after season. “If you wear one of my pieces and don’t get at least three compliments the first time, I’ll buy it back,” she says with a smile.
Wrubel’s first collection, launched in 2010, was immediately embraced by Gorsuch, the Aspen-based luxury retailer renowned for curating elite brands such as Gucci, Etro, and Brunello Cucinelli. “My pieces hung right next to those names,” she recalls. “It was glorious.”
Today, Wrubel continues to forecast global fashion trends while designing timeless garments for her devoted clientele — women aged 35 to 85 who appreciate elegance, craftsmanship, and comfort. “My clients range from career women to country club women,” she says. “They start with a capelet or dress and build their collections over time.”
Her artistry extends beyond apparel to exquisite accessories. Wrubel creates cashmere scarves inspired by historic maps and 16th-century naturalist illustrations from her husband’s family book collection. One recent design — a 100% cashmere scarf made in Italy using cutting-edge German printing technology — was commissioned by the International Order of St. Hubertus, the world’s oldest hunting club.
Though she celebrates heritage fabrics, Wrubel remains fascinated by the future. “I love anything to do with physics, chemistry, nanotechnology, and AI,” she says. “But I’ll always be loyal to the natural fibers — linen, wool, silk — the materials that started it all.”
From Manhattan’s textile labs to Italian mills, from Houston studios to Aspen boutiques, Michelle Anna Irion Wrubel’s journey is woven with passion, precision, and timeless elegance — proof that true luxury never goes out of style.

The see and be seen crowd ascends upon Aspen in June for the Aspen Food and Wine Classic, which is one of the preeminent food and wine festivals in the world. It is a who’s who of the culinary world and should be on every food and oenophile’s bucket list to attend, and it is just an amazing experience and I’m going to tell you why.
The opening night party is on Thursday, but we arrived in Aspen a day late and immediately headed to the Friday night party. We were greeted with a glass of champagne at the base of Aspen Mountain and told to head up the mountain on the gondola. After a 20-minute gondola ride that was precarious at times due to the stop starts because of high winds we were greeted with phenomenal views and a rocking party. I’m from Texas so I was not expecting to know anyone, but I saw several friendly chef faces including James Beard award winning chef and Southern Smoke Foundation founder, Chris Shepherd of Houston, Tavel Bristol-Joseph of the noted and award-winning restaurant Canje in Austin, and BBQ royalty Aaron Franklin of Austin. We also got to visit with national chef, Martin Yan, of the award-winning PBS show “Yan Can Cook.” The party had all the delicious food and drinks you could possibly want and the DJ kept the vibe going way past my bedtime.
If I thought Friday was over the top, I was not prepared for the incredible Saturday events. First, let me comment on the ancillary parties. These are the unofficial parties that, a friendly smile, should garner an invitation. Almost every store and brand host an event. I particularly enjoyed the beverages and ambience at Montclerc. They had a spritzer that was as unique as their brand.
We did not make it to the unofficial party held at Kevin Costner’s Dunbar Ranch. With views of Independence Pass and the Roaring Fork River, it looks absolutely gorgeous, but at 160 acres it is more of a mini ranch by Texas standards and the lines for the buses for the event stretched for what seemed like at least a couple of acres. The nostalgic band, All-American Rejects, played, and I’m told a good time was had by all. It was the unofficial day party to attend, but we had wine to drink and tastings to attend.

For me, the highlight of the weekend was the wine tasting seminar “California Royalty” hosted by noted author and wine guru, Mark Oldman. Mark has been described as “one of the wine world’s great populizers” and he did not disappoint. In this seminar we not only drank from the top winemakers, but we also learned to embellish our wine discussions. The wine lineup was unparalleled and included some special finds you are going to have to go to Napa and spend a fortune to taste such as the 2014 Dalla Valle Vineyards “Maya” Red Blend and the 2021 Hirsch Vineyards Pinot Noir “Reserve Estate.” Mark convinces these wineries to send their best to the festival and encourages you to use lively words to discuss the wine. For example, you aren’t just tasting lemon, you’re tasting “meyer lemon” and it isn’t just hints of cherry it is “bing cherries.” He also had a saber demonstration and was a lovely human and host all around.

Next up in the day we headed over to the “Grand tasting.” This was truly a grand event held in Wagner Park in Aspen. The grand tastings are in an area with several giant tents and there are approximately 200 brands per tasting. The amount of wine and food purveyors does not fit in one tent and they change out participants throughout the weekend so every grand tasting experience is likely to be different. Many of the top vineyards participate as well as many spirits companies. Restaurants provide samples of their food and the atmosphere can be described as one of bacchanalia. Participants are focused on drinking good wine, eating delicious food, and having an excellent time.
After the tasting we loaded on shuttle buses and headed to another one of the official parties. This one was located at Smuggler’s Mine on Smuggler’s Mountain. Smuggler’s Mine is the oldest silver mine in the Aspen Mining District and a unique venue. At its peak it was responsible for 1/5th of the world’s silver output. The party offered a vibrant atmosphere on the side of a mountain with unparalleled views. It also offered tours of the mine with food and beverage stations spread throughout.
The 2026 Aspen Food and Wine Classic will take place June 19-21st. Tickets typically go on sale in January. The event sells out so it is best to sign up on the website for updates and buy tickets promptly. Passes for the 2025 festival started at $2950 per person. June in Aspen is a welcome respite from the heat in Houston. Days are typically in the 60s or 70s and nights can dip into the 40s so bring a cute jacket.
Stay Aspen Snowmass is the official reservation system of the Food and Wine Classic. They can create vacation packages with lodging, airfare, and transportation. Of course, the best destinations are usually the ones that are hardest to get to. Aspen has a small airport that is lined with rows of private jets and if you have the means, makes the trek infinitely easier. Unites Airlines is the only airline with direct flights from Houston to Aspen, but American and Delta also offer flights that connect through Denver. See you there next June!

The contrast between the desert, the sea, and the rock formations is majestic. The blue and, almost always, cloudless blue sky meets the golden desert which meets the shimmering sea. The water is so clear near the beaches that numerous shades of blues and greens can be easily seen. The volcanic rocks stand tall throughout the bays and beaches. This is Espiritu Santo in La Paz, Mexico.
Espiritu Santo is an island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a National Park, and a Natural Protected Area in the Sea of Cortez off the coast of La Paz in Baja California Sur. The island is composed of 23,000 acres of virgin shoreline, steep-sided mountains, and picture-perfect bays. Approximately 39% of the world’s species of fish swim through the waters surrounding the island. There are 32 species of reptiles, 98 species of birds, numerous species of marine mammals, and more than 15 types of flora and fauna.
Formations created by the rocky cliff’s natural landscape look like masks along the southern coastline. Years ago, these masks were believed to be spirits that protected the island and the people inhabiting it. And thus, the name of the island was born - Espiritu Santo or “Holy Spirit.” Make sure to ask your guide to point out the mask of the Holy Spirit.
The national park is a short boat ride from La Paz. Boat rides can easily be scheduled in La Paz. Make sure you go with a certified operator, and you have the appropriate credentials to enter the park. Currently, capacity is limited on the island. Using a licensed guide will provide your credentials and will open your eyes to a world of beauty and knowledge.
On your way to the island, you just might see sea lions up close. From September through May, you can snorkel with the sea lions – one of the largest colonies in the Sea of Cortez. June through August, however, is mating season and the males are aggressive and have been known to be not so nice to those snorkeling amongst them. This is a must-do activity if you are in the

area at the right time of year. Most outfitters have fins, masks, and life jackets on board.
Once you arrive, the island is full of views to behold and adventures to take. You can swim, snorkel, and/or dive in the natural reefs and the sunken boats. Marine life meanders by to destinations only known to them. If you are lucky you might get to see a few of the protected turtles in the area.
On land, you can hike the trails. You just might see yucca, cacti, and little flowers along the way. Make sure to stop and look around, the red hills faded into the blue/green sea, and the cloudless sky will take your breath away.
Other activities include kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, sport fishing, bird watching, and many others. If you are the adventuresome type, check out glamping on the island.
La Paz is approximately 2 hours north of San Jose del Cabo. There are several services that provide transportation from the airport in San Jose del Cabo to La Paz. Plan and arrange transportation before you depart.
Espiritu Santo is an unexpected delight and worth the time to see. Enjoy.

Just an hour north of Atlanta, nestled in the rolling foothills of North Georgia, lies a destination where history, nature, and romance intertwine. Barnsley Resort is not just a retreat, but a story — one that began nearly two centuries ago and continues to captivate travelers today.
The estate traces its origins to Englishman Godfrey Barnsley, who began building a grand manor for his beloved wife Julia. Although she passed away before its completion, Barnsley’s devotion endured. Today, the ruins of the estate, surrounded by gardens in full bloom, stand as a poetic reminder of enduring love and resilience. Guests strolling the grounds experience both a brush with history and a sense of timeless beauty.
Adventure here is never far away. The resort offers miles of trails perfect for hiking, biking, or horseback riding. Anglers can cast a line in peaceful lakes, while outdoor enthusiasts take aim with Beretta clay shooting. For a more playful challenge, the Barnsley Bullseye brings together axe throwing, archery, and air rifles — a spirited blend of sport and laughter.

September in Tulum is magical. The Caribbean waters are warm, the sunsets are breathtaking, and the gentle breeze invites relaxation and adventure. For our group of ten women, this was the perfect backdrop for a long-awaited girls’ trip to celebrate a dear friend’s 50th birthday—a milestone worthy of indulgence, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Our destination? Secrets Beach Club in Tulum, Mexico, where we stayed in a private villa with every imaginable amenity.
Our journey began with the convenience of a direct United flight from Houston to Tulum, making travel stress-free and allowing us to maximize our time in paradise. Landing in Tulum, the excitement grew as we were transported to the resort, greeted by turquoise waters, lush landscaping, and the promise of a luxurious celebration.
Secrets Beach Club immediately exudes elegance and tranquility. We were escorted to our private villa, ensuring privacy while still offering easy access to all resort amenities. The villa featured two infinity pools with uninterrupted views of the Caribbean, modern decor with natural accents, and open spaces perfect for gatherings.
A 24-hour butler greeted us upon arrival, providing chilled welcome drinks, fresh tropical fruits, and warm towels. From that moment, every need was anticipated and met, creating the perfect environment to celebrate a milestone birthday in style.
The villa offered private breakfasts and dinners, allowing our group to tailor meals to our preferences. Mornings began with fresh mimosas, tropical fruits, pastries, and Mexican breakfast classics, prepared by the chefs exclusively for
our group. Evenings were reserved for celebratory dinner and anything we requested from Mexican, Italian to Asian cuisine.
Much of our trip was spent lounging at the villa’s two infinity pools, sipping cocktails and enjoying the Caribbean views. When we desired a change of scenery, the Secrets Beach Club pools offered lively options. Steps away, the soft white sand beach allowed for sunbathing, walks, and ocean dips—all accompanied by exceptional service.
The staff at Secrets Beach Club elevated our experience with their impeccable service. Beyond the villa butler, pool attendants, spa staff, and dining teams anticipated our needs, remembering names and preferences. Coordinating a group of ten women for a birthday celebration could have been challenging, yet everything flowed effortlessly, letting us focus entirely on enjoying the celebration.

No celebration would be complete without a visit to the resort spa. We indulged in the hydrotherapy package, beginning in the sauna to release tension, followed by the massage pool to soothe muscles. Alternating hot and cold treatments left us refreshed and invigorated.
Evenings at the villa were magical. After dinner, we gathered by the pool, sharing stories, laughter, and cocktails under the starry sky.
Tulum offered a perfect balance of excitement and tranquility. With our private villa, infinity pools, private dining, spa indulgence, and attentive service, the resort allowed us to fully relax while celebrating a milestone birthday in unmatched style. Every detail contributed to a luxurious, seamless experience.
What made this trip truly memorable wasn’t just the villa, pools, or spa—it was the time spent together. Women celebrating a 50th birthday, laughing, relaxing, and reconnecting, created memories that will last a lifetime. Secrets Beach Club provided the ideal backdrop, combining privacy, indulgence, and impeccable service.
As the sun set over Tulum on the final evening, painting the sky in pink and gold, we toasted our friend, reflecting on a birthday celebration that was equal parts luxury, adventure, and heartfelt connection. With direct flights from Houston, private villas, and the attentive service of Secrets Beach Club, this getaway was a milestone celebration we’ll never forget.

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR

Nestled just 80 miles from Chicago and 50 miles from Milwaukee, Lake Geneva is a hidden jewel in the Midwest. It offers shoreline, a walkable path steeped in history, luxury resorts, family-friendly amenities, and a community with charm and sophistication. This destination is on our love list and caters to a diverse audience. Included are some tips to make your trip hassle-free and unforgettable.

Don’t be fooled by the calendar. Even in early September, mornings and evenings can be brisk. Bring a jacket or windbreaker. You will thank yourself when the temperatures drop and you’re prepared.
Lake Geneva is more than just a lake; it’s a destination! Activities include boat tours, zip lining, horseback riding, spa experiences, downtown shopping, and so much more. A three-day trip will barely scratch the surface. Aim for at least four to five days to fully immerse yourself. You’ll need even more time if you want to rent a car and hop over to Chicago for some Cubs baseball and the Taste of Chicago in the Summer, or Milwaukee for a football game in the fall.
The U.S. Mail Boat tour, operated by Gage Lake Geneva Cruise Lines, is one of the area’s most unique attractions. For more than 100 years, the Walworth has delivered mail, newspapers, and packages to homes on the lakeside. Watching the “mail jumper” leap off the moving boat onto the docks and sprint back on is unforgettable. It provides a real-life glimpse of the post office motto: “through wind, rain, or snow”… and on water too!

The 21.9-mile Lake Geneva Shore Path winds around the lake’s edge, passing historic family estates like the Wrigleys and the Schwinns. Each homeowner maintains their portion of the path, making it a continuous and scenic walkway. Whether you’re an avid outdoor enthusiast or someone who rarely spends time outside, a walk of any length along the lake is a refreshing escape.

At the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa, there is an offer for the “club level” experience. It is a daily fee per room, meaning all guests allotted to that room can enjoy breakfast, light lunch snacks, and evening hors d’oeuvres with drinks. For families, it’s an affordable way to upgrade your stay and stretch the dollar. Contact your resort or hotel to see if they offer similar options for upgrades, or check with Visit Lake Geneva for additional tips.
Anytime! In spring, Lake Geneva comes alive with fresh blooms and crisp air. Summer is the busiest season, filled with festivals, swimming, and boating that make the lake sparkle with activity. In fall, brilliant foliage frames the shoreline, while cozy dining and wine tastings create the perfect autumn retreat. And let’s not forget winter, when the town transforms into a snowy escape with skiing, fireplaces, and holiday charm that captures the magic of Christmas.
Lake Geneva offers a rich history, charm, and too many activities to count. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a little of both, thoughtful planning ensures your trip is as magical as the lakeside views.

Deep in the heart of the Texas Hill country, about halfway between Austin and San Antonio, lies a quaint town where German heritage meets Texas hospitality called Fredericksburg. With vineyards that remind you of the South of France, shops lined down Main Street, rich history and a laid-back atmosphere, Fredericksburg has become one the state’s most beloved weekend getaways. Whether you are drawn by the wine, the wildflowers or the crisp country air, this unique town offers a variety of activities for every type of traveler.
Founded by German settlers in 1864, Fredericksburg has managed to maintain its heritage while embracing modern Texas culture. Almost immediately, you can see evidence of the town’s rich history through its architecture, historical Sunday Houses and churches, and in the hearty sausages, schnitzels and German inspired desserts served in restaurants. All reminders of its origins.

When visiting Fredericksburg I recommend starting your trip at the Pioneer Museum complex, a 3.5 acre where you will see original 19th century buildings and artifacts of the area’s earliest pioneers. You will have the chance to enter and explore the Sunday Houses and there is a schoolhouse on location that holds meetings for locals to practice their unique Tex-German language that you will be able to sit in and listen. Not too far from the Pioneer Museum you can discover the National Museum of the Pacific War, which provides the nation’s most comprehensive account of World War II. With more than 55,000 square feet of exhibit space spread over three galleries on six acres in the center of Fredericksburg, the museum is designed to engage a new generation of visitors. Now, despite its deep roots and nostalgic tie to its history Fredericksburg is hardly stuck in time. The
town’s modern energy comes from its winemakers and entrepreneurs who have turned this quiet Hill country, into a cultural hotspot.
You can ask any Texan where is Texas wine country and you will always hear them mention Fredericksburg. More than 75 wineries and tasting rooms now call the surrounding hills home, each offering its own distinct character. The Prochnow Vineyard is one of those unique and rich with character vineyards. Owned by husband and wife Ross and Valerie, this vineyard offers picturesque views and award-winning wines. Take a tour through their vineyard and learn about the story and inspiration behind every bottle.

Beyond the historical museums and wineries, Fredericksburg offers plenty for the adventurous traveler. The most notable is Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, located in Gillespie and Llano Counties, visitors from all over have been coming to this natural wonder for centuries and it remains one of the most popular things to do in Fredericksburg. The park offers camping, 8.4 miles of hiking trails, a nature trail, rock climbing and more. If you are visiting around summer, I recommend starting your hike early in the morning when temperatures are cooler or experience sunset from the top and learn why this wonder is called “enchanted”. If you love the outdoors but prefer something more relaxed, check out the Wild seed Farms. This Farm is considered the nation’s largest working Wildflower farm and has more than 1,000 acres in Texas and over 200 acres of wildflower fields at its Hill Country headquarters outside of Fredericksburg. Explore a real working farm all while sampling 100% Texas grown wine in their newly renovated tasting room. Owned and run by John Thomas, this farm also grows the Texas native flower the bluebonnet. The farm reminded me of a magical garden, with butterflies fluttering around the colorful and fragrant flowers and rows and rows of wildflowers as far as the eye can see. Once you are done strolling the garden be sure to check out the Market center where you can purchase some of the seeds of the flowers that are grown on the farm.

From cozy bed and breakfast to historic and thoughtfully curated lodging Fredericksburg is home to a variety of accommodation options. The area has over 1,500 Airbnb and guest house rentals available. I stayed at the Oner, a treehouse resort that takes nature and luxury and mixes them into one experience. The resort offers a heated pool and some of the lodges offer a hot tub on the deck of your accommodation. These funky shaped homes are perfect if you are looking to stay outside the town but is still only a short drive to Main Street.
Fredericksburg is one of those places that reminds you to slow down and smell the Wildflowers. Whether you are sipping local wine in the Hill country, exploring the nature trails of Enchanted Rock or simply enjoying the country hill breeze, it is easy to see why Fredericksburg is growing more popular. More than just a getaway spot, Fredericksburg is a gentle reminder of the simple pleasures that makes Texas so special.
