Legend REMEMBERING A HOUSTON WEDDING INDUSTRY
J
oe and Jan Jordan have been creating memorable and romantic transportation experiences for brides for 38 years. The Texas wedding industry suffered a great loss with the passing of Joe Jordan on January 9, 2022. You could not miss Joe, his smiling face and attention to detail made him stand out. As a founding vendor of the Bridal Extravaganza show, Joe worked to protect bride’s transportation investments by educating brides and fellow limo venders on proper licensing requirements. His stylish wardrobe ways were only outdone by the vintage vehicles he rented. He is missed.

THE NEXT BRIDAL EXTRAVAGANZA SHOW IS JULY 23–24
TRENDS
The January
Bridal
Extravangza was a Huge Success!
Photos by Emmanuel Aguirre The Bridal Extravaganza took place at the George R. Brown in January 2022. A new sense of renewal and optimism swept through the crowd. Brides are definitely ready to get back to the business of wedding planning. Brides were gifted with masks provided by EB, Inc. The show offered a new, touchless feature where brides and wedding vendors could exchange information via QR code. Both brides and vendors loved this safe way to communicate via our new exciting app, BrideScan. The most exciting events of the day were the fashion shows—the main stage was packed with gowns and brides giddy to see the models take the runway. There was a lot of excitement surrounding the Bride Tribe spirit competition as bride teams took the stage to create a TikTok video for the Bridal Extravaganza. Overall, brides, vendors and guests felt safe as they attended one of the first bridal events to take place in this Covid era. From the garter to the getaway car and everything in between—The Bridal Extravaganza—experience this Houston tradition. Tickets are on sale now for the next Bridal Extravaganza.

THE NEXT EXTRAVAGANZA IS JULY 23–24, 2022 The Bridal Extravaganza is taking place at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. Brides and grooms will join forces with their wedding party and attend an amazing convention to plan for the moment they’ll never forget.

BLYTHE ALEXA HOPE BRANDON BECERRA October 10, 2020
by Chelsea Andoe
Shining Stars
Set to a tone of light pinks and blues, Blythe and Brandon’s double ring ceremony took place on the very coveted and lucky date of October 10, 2020. The limestone architecture and exquisite chapel made Briscoe Manor the perfect venue for this couple. The location in Richmond, Texas was very convenient for their family and friends.
The ceremony and reception were customized to fit the couple’s personality. They incorporated both of their families in a ceremony to create a unique and beautiful piece of glass art by Unity in Glass. After a touching toast from her father, everyone enjoyed a five-tiered cake from Who Made the Cake. In lieu of a guest book, well wishers were asked to sign on a commemorative photo frame. In keeping with Covid-19 protocols sanitizer was readily available. The wedding was full of sparkling details. The bride wore a stunning A-line dress by Impression Bridal and shined in her headpiece by Dareth Coleborn. The couple honeymooned in Antigua and Cancun.

The bride and bridesmaids all wore matching pj’s and got glammed up by Kiss & Makeup. It was all tears when Blythe’s father and brother got a first look at her prior to the ceremony.

MIRANDA BENNETT JUSTIN DAVID COX September 17, 2019
A REASON TO CELEBRATE The Proposal: After a long work week, Miranda came home to find Justin enjoying a beer on the porch. Justin suggested they go to Justine’s, a newly opened restaurant on 5th street. Before getting ready, Miranda took a quick break while scrolling through her phone on the couch. Justin suddenly urged her to get ready, as they needed to celebrate. Miranda was confused as to what they were celebrating, but when she put her phone down, she saw him down on one knee with a ring in his hands. The Location: Both the bride and groom have sentimental ties to San Antonio, so they knew it would have to be there. For their venue, they chose The Hotel Havana as they’d been there before for quick trips and weekend getaways. The building was built in 1914 and its architecture made them feel as if they were in a different time. Bride’s Advice: “The best advice I received was to remember to connect with my husband throughout the wedding itself, to make a point to seek him out for eye contact, to steal moments with just him. That was the best tool for grounding myself and remembering that ultimately, the commitment he and I were making was the reason for everything. It might sound basic, but a wedding can be the quickest way to lose sight of that simple fact. I also wish that I had allowed myself more joy, play and fun in the wedding planning process. I was so committed to checking things off of my list because I was so overwhelmed trying to balance it all with my regular responsibilities. [She is Founder & CEO of Miranda Bennett Studio.] “I wish I had spoken up to create more space in my work life for wedding planning and leaned into the possibility that the process could be fun rather than taxing. Last thing, but perhaps most important: do not skip a day of planner or a videographer for the wedding ceremony. Our day of planner was the MVP of the entire wedding. We did not hire a videographer for the ceremony and I still regret it.”

birthday, they stopped by local hot spot Agora. “That’s where he popped the question. No photographers, no other people around—just a simple and intimate proposal to suit us as a couple,” recalls Ashley with joy. Later, family and friends joined them to celebrate at a restaurant. They searched online for venues and when they called The Grand Hall in Montgomery, Texas, they knew they had found the location for their big day. “The staff was kind and eager to help us; we took a tour and loved it!” They specifically liked that the vintage barn was perfect for the ceremony and it was just a few steps to the hall, the perfect reception area. “We appreciated how they were patient and excited for us to experience our special day.” Their cake was created by aunt Silvia. She made a coffee cake Grooms Cake and vanilla cake Bride’s Cake. The guests were served cupcakes that were individually wrapped to ensure safety during the pandemic. The guests chose from coffee cake, vanilla cake, or chocolate cake.

EMMA KATE EBBS COLLIN ANTHONY STRAUS November 16, 2020
by Kenneth Castano
LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL The Proposal: A little over a year into dating, Emma and Collin took a trip to Argentina. On the second day, after exploring the city of Buenos Aires, the couple relaxed in a park while Emma did voiceovers for some nearby squirrels. Collin would interrupt her with what Emma described as the easiest question she’s ever been asked. That night, Emma slept with tears in her eyes knowing that would be a hard day to beat. The only day that was more special: their wedding day!
- 58 -
The Location: The couple wanted to make sure their location was easy to get to from Houston and more than anything; FUN. New Orleans was the obvious choice for them! As the couple said, “if you aren’t having fun in New Orleans, you’re doing it wrong.” Bride’s Advice: “Make sure that all vendors do a run through with someone who knows what the drill is (or do it at rehearsal if you have the option)! Our music guy couldn’t make it to the rehearsal and the music ended up being out of order. He eventually got it right after our planner stepped in and helped get him situated. Everyone needs a practice run! Also, it’s ok if/when something goes a little sideways — it makes it more memorable!”

JAQUELYN TULLOS JUSTIN HILL
FAIRY LIGHTS AND ENGAGEMENT NIGHT
May 23, 2020
by Carolina Hernandez-Carrello
Jaquelyn, a benefit advisor, and Justin, an electrical engineer, met at church but their first date was a blind date set by a mutual friend. Justin was always trying to surprise her, and that also meant the proposal. Justin rallied the troops (meaning her roommates and best friends) to help with the surprise. They kept her busy throughout the day and took her to happy hour then to a Christmas party. During that time, Justin was planning a winter wonderland or as now they joke a Clark Griswold Christmas at her house. “It was incredible and sort of blinding! There were lights for days from the walkway, to the curtain lights around the porch, on the columns, and on the ceiling, etc. It was legit a Christmas wonderland,” Jaquelyn happily remembers of the engagement. The wedding took place at Astin Mansion, a 100-year-old mansion, in Bryan, Texas. Jaquelyn shined in a beautiful A-line dress by Blue by Enzoani from Weddings by Debbie in Katy, Texas. Both bridal and groom cakes were made by Peace, Love, and Cakes based in Bryan, Texas. Her cousin, Amanda Hamilton, owner of Cotton Boll Florals out of Jena, LA, did all the flowers and décor. Due to Covid, she had to change how food was being served. Originally, a buffet open concept style was in place with heavy appetizers and entrees along with a huge charcuterie board. Jaquelyn says, “That had to change, so I decided to have individual boards made for each guest placed at each seat while cocktails were being served. It was a hit, especially for the cheese lovers.” Bride’s Advice: “Planning a wedding is stressful; planning a wedding when a pandemic hits is just crazy. Plans changed every week up to three days before. You have to fight for your joy and peace. I would tell brides to write your own vows and have a first look. Or have two in my case. My dad saw me first, which was fun, especially since I felt his gun on his hip, and told him to put it away during the wedding! But more importantly, the first look with Justin was dreamy. I fought doing the first look up until the week of, when Christine, our photographer, convinced me to do it. I’m so glad I listened. It calmed us both down prior to the actual ceremony. We were able to get the nervous giggles out, have little intimate touches, and stolen kisses.”

WHEN LOVE BLOOMS The Proposal: When Micah needed professional headshots done, Krystyna suggested a friend to get the job done. This was all part of Micah’s plan, as he already knew Krystyna would suggest her friend to take the photographs. The stage was set, and after a back-to-back pose photo was taken, Krystyna turned around to find Micah ready to ask the big question. The Location: The River Oaks Garden Club Forum was the perfect choice for the couple. They were attracted to the character that flowed throughout the 100-year-old building. The intimacy of the back garden enhanced the special feeling of their wedding and the blooming flowers accentuated the love in the air.

LAUREN MCKAY HORTENSTINE TYLER COLE JAECKS November 20, 2021
by Laurette M. Veres
SOUTHERN DREAM This classic southern wedding is the type Kari Loth, founder of Southern Bash, simply lives for. She had a blast bringing Lauren and Tyler’s southern dream to life.
The reception kicked off with guests participating in the Grand March, a fun and interactive small-town tradition. Guests then enjoyed chicken fried steak, traditional bride and groom cakes, and late-night breakfast burritos. And of course, the reception was not complete without the classic southern tradition, the Aggie War Hymn. After two-stepping the night away, Lauren and Tyler were sent off with an array of sparklers, driving away in an adorable Ford Model A car. In traditional Southern style, this couple had a large wedding party – 10 stunning bridesmaids in sparkly burgundy dresses, accompanied by 10 fine-looking groomsmen in Texas Tuxes and Stetson hats. This 550-guest wedding took place in Thorndale, Texas at the Kiesling Ranch. It incorporated many elements that delighted the guests, including ringbearers who were pulled down the aisle in a wagon, and an intimate branding unity ceremony.

Mas Colores Yucatan—the colors, the culture—all so close to home for Texans By Laurette M. Veres Instead of crossing the pond and heading to Europe on your honeymoon you’ll find culture, history, architecture, dining, beaches and more in the state of Yucatan, Mexico. The region was just named Best Wedding Destination – Mexico at the travel industries’ Travvy Awards; now is the perfect time to see what the buzz is all about. Mexico and the world marked the rebirth of tourism to Mexico at the travel industry’s most important event, Tuaguis Turistico, held in Mérida at the end of 2021.Yucatan’s state Minister of Tourism, Michelle Fridman Hirsch, said, “The rebuilding of the tourism industry in our state, and Mexico’s, has been incredibly important, as it represents the livelihood of so many people in our country and impacts so much of the international travel and tourism industry. We look forward to the renewal of the country’s general tourism industry.” Whether you are looking for adventure, cosmopolitan culture, or Mexico’s small-town traditional options, there is so much to see and explore. Here are some highlights.

HONEYMOONS
MAYAPÁN ARCHAEOLOGICAL ZONE
There are many, many ruins throughout the area; you should visit at least one. Mayapán is especially interesting because there are approximately 57 structures in the Central Plaza, a pyramid and a rare Observatory. In this site ceramic objects, mural paintings, and stucco sculptures have been recovered helping depict the history of this important Mayan city. You can also climb to the top of one of the pyramids, many historical sites no longer allow this guest experience.
TEKIT
Yucatan has some seemingly forgotten villages. Take a step back in time in Tekit as you meet local artisans and bakers. A traditional male shirt, Guayabera, is the standard dress here. Known worldwide as a garment associated with Cuba and Latin America, these light weight shirts are identified by four pockets and two rows of pleats. This men’s staple is standard attire at weddings and social events. Tekit is the epicenter of the guayabera production in the state, with more than 200 manufacturing workshops. Don’t leave without a guayabera.
UXMAL
In the north-west part of the Yucatán, Uxmal flourished between the 6th and 10th centuries. Its buildings are noted for their size and decoration. One of the best preserved of all Mayan sites, check out the video immersion event, Ecos De Uxmal, a fun way to see this site at night. Where to Stay: Hotel Resort Maya is an oasis on your way to the ruins. Learn more about Mayan culture at the hotel, enjoy a resort pool and views of Uxmal. The archeological site is walking distance from your hotel.
CAMINO DEL MAYAB
You might have heard of the Camino de Santiago hike and bike paths in Spain, and now the Yukatan has an option, too. This is a long-distance trail, created on ancient roads connecting 17 communities to one another. Hikers and bikers enjoy birds, plants and cenotes as they travel

from one community to another. Reservations are required so you can enjoy meals in private homes and stay at private Haciendas throughout your journey. Your passport will be stamped at each stop. We departed from Yunku and had the chance to check out Cenote Yunku. The stairs are steep, and worth the hike. The crystal-clear water and Stalactites create an other-worldly atmosphere.
MOTUL
The town of Motul is a great example of a Spanish Colonial town. Wandering through the market gives you the opportunity to take in the scents and colors of the region. Above the central Mercado, at Doña Evelia, you’ll find the birthplace of a popular breakfast dish huevos motuleños. Whether over easy or sunny-side-up, you’ll love the flavor combination of beans and tomato sauce, fried tortillas, habanero chile, and fried plantains.

Whether you are looking for adventure, cosmopolitan culture, or Mexico’s small-town traditional options, there is so much to see and explore. SAN CRISANTO
San Crisanto is a one of a kind eco-tourism destination including beaches, thousands of meters of mangroves and 45 cenotes. The members of Ejido de San Crisanto cooperative have previously promoted fishing, coconut, and salt for the region. Today, the focus is on tourism. Enjoy a lovely boat tour where you float through mangroves with your gondolier, observing the flora and fauna. Helecho Giante is a hidden cenote only accessible via boat on this tour. When you arrive, you will likely be the only group visiting.
SINANCHÉ APITOURISM TOUR
This part of the world is a buzz with information about bees. Find out how bees help the ecosystem, learn about honey production, and so much more. This area is famous for the melipona bee, a very special species that lives in the Yucatan. Sinanché is a destination located one hour from Merida, between Motul and San Crisanto. Here you can learn from a beekeeper, don a beekeeper suit and interact with bees! During the tour, visit several themed cabins where you can learn about the history, the process of honey production, taste honey and make a natural wax candle.
DINING IN MERIDA
Picheta: Located above the historic square, Picheta, offers contemporary cuisine with great views of the cathedral. This spacious restaurant has many great locations for a festive rehearsal dinner. The rooftop of La Plaza Central de Mérida, is sure to wow your guests. Micaela Mar y Leña: This hotspot is perfect if you are staying in the town center. See and be seen and don’t miss the grilled octopus, tuna and oysters Rockefeller.

Memphis’ famed Beal Street is several blocks of lively bars featuring live music and libations. If you meet up with any locals, they’ll expect you to know what makes their BBQ so special. Hint meat here is slow smoked with a dry rub. Slaw is served on the sandwich, never on the side. What a perfect way to kick off your wedding festivities. www.centralstationhotel.com
