“You’ll literally find everything you could possibly need for your dream wedding at this event,” says Laurette Veres, producer. “The Bridal Extravaganza is like your Pinterest board brought to life. The booths are like mini selfie-walls.” It’s a wonderland for today’s bride.

Let them eat cake! Cakes By Gina was awarded the coveted Best of Show at the recent Extravaganza.

The wedding industry abounds with wonderful vendors offering unique options. Although on-line research is important, brides know meeting vendors face-toface is the only way to ensure correct vendor selction. Since its inception in 1983, The Bridal Extravaganza Show has continued to evolve and keep up with the latest wedding and wedding fashion trends. The goal? To meet the needs of every type of wedding party.

- 36 -

EVENTS The Bridal Extravaganza Show makes it possible for brides and grooms to plan their picture perfect and instagram-worthy wedding. And because everything is bigger and better in Texas, this extravaganza has over 400 vendors with more food, prizes, and fashion shows than any other bridal show in the country. Need a great-tasting cake to match your wedding needs? As an attendee, you have an opportunity to sample delicious wedding cakes from several vendors. Many brides get lucky and book their cake decorator that exact same day.

From fashion shows that allow brides to see numerous gown options to educational seminars that offer behind the scenes wedding options, The Bridal Extravaganza Show has something to offer the entire wedding party. All this and more creates two funfilled days of bridal bliss. The Bridal Extravaganza is taking place at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. This bridal show is the most established, elite, and resourceful event for bridal parties, not just in the state of Texas, but in the entire country. Brides and grooms will join forces with their wedding party and attend an amazing convention to plan for the moment they’ll never forget.

The next Extravaganza is July 13-14th, 2019 - 37 -

The Bridal Extravaganza Show

TESTIMONIALS Casey

The show allows you to see all the best vendors

Jason Snow Photography

The Bridal Extravaganza really helped me narrow down my choices in vendors. I selected my florist and my linen company after meeting them at the expo. It’s a really good place to meet several vendors all in one day, which makes it a lot easier to make decisions.

Christina

It’s a really good place to meet several vendors all in one day

I attended the Bridal Extravaganza Show in January 2016. I was just recently got engaged, and I had a little while to go, but I’m so glad I started early! You don’t realize how much you have to do before your wedding date and the show allows you to see all the best vendors out there. At some point throughout the wedding process, I needed to quickly find a vendor to create and print my menu cards. I remembered all the business cards I received, and picked a vendor from one I had visited at the show. I definitely recommend the Bridal Extravaganza Show to all Brides-to-be!

I attended the Extravaganza with my mother shortly after getting engaged. I had already decided to do the planning myself, but [my advice is to] hire a Day-of coordinator (Audrey Hu-Gonzalez, who is fantastic). Attending the show helped me realize just how much detail I had to think about and got me started on the right track with venues and the quality of service I was looking for.

Sophia Yaser I actually attended the Bridal Extravaganza Show twice. The first time, I was in over my head on planning, and a second time, I was almost finished planning. It helped me recognize what I wanted for our wedding and what we didn’t want.

It was definitely a one-stop shop! The event can definitely be overwhelming

Kimberly

Scott Kelley Photography

We arrived knowing very little about weddings. We were a bit overwhelmed by how many brides, bridesmaids, mother-of-the-brides, and grooms attended for the purpose of finding that extra “perfect touch” for their already well-planned weddings, while we did not even know where to begin our search. However, as we began walking down the aisles one by one, we found exactly what we needed from vendors that suited our needs and tastes. Within a few hours, we had picked our invitations company/consultant (Vivian Jade) and found our musicians (Divisi Strings). From there, our planning became much easier, and everything fell into place!

I did attend the Extravaganza and was able to find my photographer, videographer, invitation designer and cake designer. It was definitely a one-stop shop! The event can definitely be overwhelming, but if you go in with the mindset that you know exactly what you are looking for it definitely helps.

Kristine I had attended the bridal show twice before for a friend’s wedding. I went with my mom and mother-in-law after I was engaged. It was very helpful and I was able to meet a lot of the vendors I ended up choosing— including my photographer Scott Kelley.

It was very helpful and I was able to meet a lot of the vendors

I highly recommend every bride attend the Bridal Extravaganza. Being new to Houston, I didn’t exactly know where to start. The Bridal Extravaganza was a great way to shop for all of your vendors, get some great ideas, and even find some discounts! We actually got discounts on our groomsmen’s tuxes by using a coupon we had received from attending. There was also tons of information and even drawings for honeymoon packages. The experience was extremely helpful in the planning process, but it was also a lot of fun. What girl doesn’t enjoy walking around with her friends looking at tons of wedding booths? It was like a real life Pinterest board.

your Core in Treat your gals to a wellness retreat at The Resort at Pedregal

Get wedding ready by participating in the wellness retreat, a multi-day fitness experience led by Elite Fitness. The staff at Elite fitness understands most of Pedregal’s guests have access to the best gyms, trainers, and chefs as part of their daily lives, so they created an out of the ordinary fitness experience to impress the most discerning participants. It starts when Naturopath Dr. Wendy comes to your room to conduct a private BioFeedback Body Scan. She connects wrists, ankles and head to a computer, it feels kind of like having your

blood pressure taken. During the process she asks about lifestyle, heath goals, and diet. She compares body scan results with your goals, identifies deficiencies and offers solid steps for improvement. Her message may be to reduce toxins interfering with the brain and daily functions of vital organs, start intermittent fasting or make new/better dietary choices. Once a baseline and goals are set, it’s time to select activities.

BEACH BOOT CAMP Wake up early and Elite Fitness will push you beyond your normal workout by combining cardio, weight training, cross training, and more. Although it’s beautiful, the coarse Cabo sand makes easy squats become wobbly, cumbersome and

FARM TO TABLE Visit a nearby farm where locals and Ex-Pats grow fruit, vegetables and herbs. Enjoy a tour of the gardens, yoga on the farm and a farm to table meal.

STRETCH AND BREATH The group stretch and breath workshop focuses on Foundational breathing. (Breath work is beneficial for men too!)

The goal is to open up the chest and back to combat the effects of constant laptop and smart phone usage. A beautiful hike follows with gorgeous views of the Baja. Discover the gravesites of the original family as well as the remains of their first home. Along the way small changes will be discussed: quinoa instead of pasta, chipotle instead of sauce, and steeping your own tea. The recommended dessert is particularly noteworthy --healthy ice cream.

YOGA Sunrise and sunset deserve their own salutations, jogi style. Join the Elite Fitness crew on a luxury yacht at the nearby Marina Cabo San Lucas. Your yoga practice commences just as the boat sails past the famous Cabo Arch at Pelicano beach. The onboard workout is a combination of yoga, mat Pilates and sculpting. This combination workout offers the best of both worlds and is great for people on

From a Japanese-inspired day spa sanctuary, to the lush gardens of a secret wedding venue; destination wedding guests are invited to taste the creameries, meaderies, wineries and distilleries that commune with organic farms and dairies. These locally-owned businesses are what dot the hillsides of Sonoma County, California. Agri-loving residents represent the “cult” in cultivation. The organic and farm-to-table movements began here and that spirit remains a way of life. Mead is a word derived from the Welsh word which means “healing liquor” and yet it dates back as far as ancient Egypt. a drink that will haunt you long after the first glass. “I always felt a fermented honey drink should be very light, refreshing, and pleasurable, and should taste like the honey it’s made from.” To achieve that, Hull employs techniques in honey bee management, by allowing his bees to forage on diverse botanicals, which he also grows on his farm. You can actually taste what the bees graze upon, as the effervescence climbs the fluted glass to explode in your mouth.

Nestled between the dense Riviera Maya jungle and Playa del Carmen’s longest stretch of beach, discover a bohemian gem: Mahekal Beach Resort. The name means “magical place.” Mahekal’s tradition dates back 50 years when a family built six thatched-roof palapas on the beach for wandering backpackers to rent. Profits were invested in more bungalows, and over several decades, the family built more than 100 palapas

Our ocean-front casita is literally 37 steps from the surf and our private plunge pool has an unobstructed view of the Caribbean. by Brogen Woodward

DULCE GODINEZ DANNY NGUYEN March 3, 2018

How We Met: We met at the Catholic Newman Center at the University of Houston.

- 58 -

Proposal Story:

BaoLoi Photography

Danny proposed on a rainy day, I wanted to stay in and study. I am a huge Harry Potter fan, so he brought me a Harry Potter book and inside was the ring!

- 59 -

REAL WEDDINGS

Themes: Themes are so fun and everyone gets really excited. Even our older family members really enjoyed our Harry Potter theme. So bringing in a bit of personality is always fun for you and your guests. We had a super fun wand bar where guests could pick out their own wands!

- 60 -

Bride’s Advice: First I would say plan out your budget with some room for growth. Guest counts can increase so it’s always good to plan for that. I would also recommend that you plan early. A big detail I would say you should never ever forget is to do a timeline with your vendors and check on it one week before the event so nothing is off time. Finally, it’s ok for things to change and you shouldn’t focus too much on it because at the end of the day you get to marry the love of your life.

- 61 -

Haak Vineyards & Winery has 3 acres ofgrapevines nestled among a

12 acre estate in our country setting. We feature an inclusive package with the ability to customize details to create your perfect vision. We coordinate everything on your special day and have perfected our wedding service to help make your wedding planning free of stress. Our venue can accommodate more than 200 guests in our beautiful vineyard setting. Haak Vineyards and Winery is your close to home wedding destination.

REAL WEDDINGS

This couple met in High School in the south Texas town of McAllen. “I knew who Rene was because of mutual friends, but had never actually talked to him. I thought he was so handsome. I would always tell our mutual friends jokingly that he was my boyfriend. We dated his Junior year and my Senior year of High School.”

&

YAZMEEN SAHADI RENE ESCOBEDO By Laurette Veres Wedding location: El Escobedo Ranchito in McAllen, Tx Gown info: Flan’s Bridal Cake info: Cynthia’s Cakes

Proposal story: We walked on the beach at South Padre Island, the weather was breezy and beautiful. Over a glass of champagne, he told me how thankful he was for everything and expressed how much he loved me. Then he proposed.

- 64 -

November 10th, 2018 Jana Cantua Photography

We planned this beautiful, small Mexican themed wedding in only two weeks. The actual plan had been to get married at the courthouse and invite our immediate family. Next thing we know, all of Rene’s family from Mexico City booked flights to McAllen. The invitation list kept expanding. My parents decided, “Let’s just invite the 80 people we were planning on having and do this thing!” So we did.

Yazmeen’s Advice: Every bride should hire a wedding planner. No matter how organized you or a family members may think they are, no bride or family member should run the show. Even if it is only a day-of coordinator, it relieves so much stress and allows the bridal couple to enjoy themselves on their special day.

One of the best parts of our wedding was the sweet toasts given by our 16 and 17 year old siblings.

REAL WEDDINGS

Proposal: I had planned for us to take couples pictures in December, but kept having to reschedule because of the rain. On December 13th, 2015, we decided to take our pictures inside at the Museum of Natural Science. My friend took pictures of us in the butterfly garden and captured the moment when I turned around to see Diego down on one knee. The best part of it was that he proposed to me with his grandmother’s diamond in a new setting, making it even more meaningful.

&

STEPHANIE BARKER DIEGO RUBALCAVA by Ainsley Mandell

How you met: We knew of each other in middle school and occasionally talked to each other in the hallway once we got to high school. We shared mutual friends but never truly had the opportunity to get to know each other until we both attended Stephen F. Austin after high school. We became close, but never treated each other as anything but friends until several people pointed out to us how compatible we were, and we finally realized that we liked each other. We had our first date during the summer of 2012 and began to fall in love.

- 72 -

Alexander Cross Photography

December 11th, 2016

Bride’s Advice: Wait to pick your bridesmaids. It’s worth the wait to see who truly cares about you and who is interested in helping you plan your wedding. Create a binder and stay organized with what has been completed and what still needs to be done. Leave space in your budget to go on your Honeymoon. Finally, I definitely suggest taking a premarital class. We took a class through our church and have a couple that mentors and helps us with the challenges married life brings.

We were moving to Texas for Michael’s job and decided to drive a U-Haul from Boston. We made a few stops on our road trip, but I was most excited about our stop in Memphis. I have been an Elvis fan since I was a child and was so excited to visit Graceland. After our tour through the mansion, we gave our phone to a security guard to take our picture and Michael got down on one knee!

SARAH BEEBE MICHAEL LEVERONI by Ainsley Mandell

- 76 -

October 7th, 2017

Bride’s Advice: Enjoy the process and don’t get caught up in the details. The most important person while planning my wedding (aside from my husband) was my wedding planner. She made sure that my vision came to life and that we enjoyed our day without worrying about what was going on behind the scenes. If you can’t afford a planner, or choose not to have one, be as organized as possible. Lastly, as fun as it is to plan with family and friends, the opinions can get overwhelming. Try to remember that this is your special day! Make final decisions with your partner after taking other people’s opinions into consideration.

Dream Photo & Video

We love walking our dogs, so one Wednesday in May we walked down to Silver Sycamore and he had the ring waiting for me by the lake. He got down on one knee and proposed. We were both so excited we can’t remember a thing either one said, which always makes us laugh!

AUBREY ERIN SPIGENER CHASE ALLEN HOFFMAN by Brogen Woodward

How We Met: My parents own a coffee shop called Sycamore Grounds, and I came to town to help with the opening. Chase was hired as a barista and throughout the summer we would occasionally chat. Then one day he asked my dad if he could take me on a date. We decided to be friends since I was attending Baylor. A year later we met back at the coffee shop, went to a New Year’s Eve party together, and have been inseparable ever since.

- 84 -

September 23th, 2017

Venue Choice: My parents built and own Silver Sycamore and because of them I met my husband. It was a no brainer to choose the place we first met!

Bride’s Advice: Do not stress, you will not even notice if one centerpiece is off or if someone didn’t sit in the right place. The day goes by so quickly, so slow down and take the time to soak it all in and be happy!

REAL WEDDINGS

They met at Oklahoma State’s Camp Cowboy where they were both camp counselors. At Sarah’s very first camp, she met a boy named Reilee. Little did she know this meeting would change her life.

&

SARAH SAUER REILEE BERGER

May 27th, 2018

Villa Antonia, Austin, Texas

Their friendship blossomed. “One of my funniest memories of our budding relationship was a night when he asked if he could kiss me. I said no. Looking back now, it makes me laugh, but at the time I could tell he was mortified. Several months following, our friendship had grown stronger and I knew I had a crush on him. Knowing that he thought I had friend-zoned him after the whole kiss incident, I knew I would have to make the first move. On our Labor Day holiday, we went to see a drive in movie, and following, I proposed to him with a ring pop… to be my boyfriend of course.”

- 92 -

Sarah Libby Photography

Reilee’s proposal took place at a park. He hired a photographer who pretended to be taking pictures of her kids. “We set up the picnic, but instead of food I pulled a book out of the basket. I read a short story I had written for her, and at the end asked her to marry me and I pulled out the ring” says the groom. Of course she said yes, and that evening Sarah’s friends surprised her with an engagement party. “And if you all might be wondering, it wasn’t with a ring pop this time,” says Sarah happily.

by Stephanie DiCiro Priscilla and Justin got married on a Thursday at St. Leo, the Great Catholic Church in San Antonio. Priscilla walked down the aisle with a gorgeous ivory chiffon A-line dress with a sweetheart neckline that was purchased from David’s Bridal. The Sheraton stood out to Priscilla and Justin for its character and historical charm that was evident throughout the hotel. There was also an

incredible terrace that provided a beautiful view from Houston Street and the Crystal Ballroom. This added the perfect amount of elegance to the wedding. The Crystal Ballroom had eye-catching chandeliers that were a luxurious touch for the reception. There were stunning centerpieces that were a unique combination of hurricane vases and votives with candles. These were complimented by incredible floral arrangements from HEB Weddings by Design.

Bride’s Advice: My advice would be to shop around. We must have seen almost ten different venues, five different bakeries, and five different florists. We had an idea of what we wanted and what our budget was and we stuck to it. Each vendor we met with, we ranked on a scale from 1-10 and considered what he or she offered, [their] price, etc. We were able to narrow it down quickly and chose the vendors that we did. We were extremely satisfied with the quality and service we received with each and every one of [the vendors we chose] and they all contributed to making our big day that much more special. So, take the time to shop around and stick to your budget!

Wedding plans are underway for this lovely bride. Moms, mothers-in-laws and aunts offer sage advice. Champagne flows. By Tom Flynn Photography by Ivan Garcia Styling by Aniell Parrales

“After a long winter, I look forward to the warm sunny days of spring and the fresh produce that comes with them. In my little garden basil is already thriving, onions and leeks have been growing all winter and are ready to come out of the ground. To celebrate the season I’m incorporating my new harvest into a tasty spring meal,” Tom Flynn.

Why do you need a travel agent with hundreds of online sites available to you today? Let me give you a few reasons: 1. Money- I will work. within your budget to find you the best rates available. I search numerous suppliers and have access to special promotions to provide you with the best package prices out there. Some people shy away from travel agents because they think. they will pay more. I don't add any extra fees for my services, so you're getting my experience and connections for free! 2. Time- You could spend hours online researching the endless choices available, bouncing from one site to another. Planning a trip shouldn't be stressful. Just give me a call and I will take the hassle away, plus give you options you may not have even considered. 3. Customer Service - I have been a top producer in the travel business for over 15 years. Through site inspecdons, supplier certifications and training seminars, I spend countless hours staying informed and up to date on travel products. Years of networking have given me extensive connections in the industry that I can call on to make sure my clients are well taken care of from the time they leave to the time they arrive back. home. 4. Troubleshooting - Perhaps the most important reason to use a travel agent is to have someone there for you when something goes wrong. Try camng that online booking website when your flight is cancelled or delayed and you miss your connection, or when your room with a view overlooks the entire AJC system, or even worse ... you arrive at your destination and the resort is oversold. These things and a thousand others happen every day. My clients know that I am just a phone call away and will work. on their behalf to resolve any

Hill Country MIRAVAL SPA COMES TO AUSTIN

Miraval invites you to recharge your life. Nestled in the flowing hill country of Austin, Miraval is a tremendous place to rejuvenate, relax, and refresh. - 163 -

The Miraval spa tradition started in Tucson, Arizona in 1995. The simple message hasn’t changed: Everyone can achieve life balance. Now you can balance your life right here in Texas! The calming open-air lobby looks over 220 acres of protected land and Lake Austin. The view creates a wave of relaxation the moment you walk in the door.

STORY & PHOTOS BY

Laurette M. Veres - 164 -

There are 117 guest rooms, suites and villas decorated in gray and white and tucked into the woods MIRAVAL MODE Just as your cell phone can be set to airplane mode, guests are invited set “Miraval mode.” No phone conversations in public spaces; no phones at meals. They encourage guests to be present with the people and surroundings. To encourage setting to “Miraval mode,” cell phone sleeping bags are presented at check-in. The Texas hill country ambiance is breathtaking. Along the leisurely walk to the rooms is the Body Mindfulness Center, Yoga Barn, Life in Balance culinary kitchen,

and Miraval Spa- amenities important to your stay. The Body Mindfulness Center is always open, and rocking much of the time organized classes and activities. Texas line dancing, salsa, morning stretch, body & barre happen often. You can dig a little deeper with classes in the power of intuition, chakras and the elements or astrology. The gym, with its shiny new exercise equipment, is part of the Body Mindfulness Center. The yoga barn is a spectacularly Zen building boasting high ceilings. Natural light

illuminates through the floor to ceiling windows and a view of the Austin hill country lies beyond. Bodies suspend from the ceiling in yoga positions during aerial yoga. Wrapped in “satins,” purple cloths hanging from the ceiling, guests are in cocoons of comfort during floating meditation class, gently rocking to the soothing vibrations of crystal bowls.

The 20,000 square foot spa has 30 treatment rooms, a spa pool, relaxation rooms, salon, sauna, steam room and retail boutique

DINE The Crossings Hilltop Kitchen serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and grab and go snacks, all included with your stay. Enjoy a buffet of fresh items and abundance of salads. The salads are noteworthy: butternut squash and quinoa, red lentil, Brussels sprout apple, roasted winter vegetable, Sonoran wheat berry, Mediterranean cous cous, chickpea and sweet potato, etc. There are also portion friendly made-to-order options like grilled vegetable sandwiches or vegetarian tacos.

DINNER: ELEVATED In the evening, the “Just Cook for me Chef ” introduces guests to the Conscious Cooking movement. Instead of rushing through a meal, slow down and enjoy the process. William Sonoma helped create a stunning chef ’s demonstration

kitchen. This hands-on culinary programming encourages guests to walk through the kitchen and talk to the chef. On this exquisite evening, we tasted: quail breast and scallop sliders, pasture raised chicken wings, butternut squash gnocchi, forage mushroom tartine, Texas Wagyu flank steak, and chocolate date pie.

SLUMBER, SWEET SLUMBER There are 117 guestrooms, suites and villas decorated in gray and white and tucked into the woods.
