Commencement Speakers Maggie Goodlander and Jake Sullivan

T

wo former Washington political advisors will co-deliver Brewster Academy’s Commencement address to the Class of 2015 in May. Maggie Goodlander spent four years working in the U.S. Senate, serving first as

the speechwriter and foreign policy advisor to Sen. Joseph Lieberman. In that capacity, she worked on a broad range of international issues, including comprehensive sanctions legislation and the U.S. legislative response to the Arab Spring and traveled to more than 40 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East. From January to August 2013, she served as a senior policy advisor to Sen. John McCain and was responsible for assisting with the development, drafting, and legislative strategy for the Senate’s bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform effort in 2013. Goodlander graduated from Yale College in 2009 and is currently a second-year student at Yale Law School. She also is an intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve and an editor of The Yale Law Journal. Jake Sullivan is a Visiting Lecturer in Law, the Oscar M. Ruebhausen Distinguished Visiting

Lecturer in National Security at Yale Law School, and a Jackson Senior Fellow at Yale’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs. Until 2014 he served as a national security advisor to Vice President Joe Biden. He previously served as director of policy planning at the U.S. Department of State and as deputy chief of staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He was deputy policy director on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential primary campaign, and a member of the debate preparation team for Barack Obama’s general election campaign. Sullivan also previously served as a senior policy advisor and chief counsel to Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who is from his home state of Minnesota, worked as an associate for Faegre & Benson LLP, and taught at the University of St. Thomas Law School. He clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and Judge Guido Calabresi of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Sullivan holds undergraduate and law degrees from Yale and a master’s degree from the University of Oxford. Goodlander and Sullivan are eager to share their experiences and life lessons with the Class of 2015 at Commencement on Saturday, May 23.
