ABOUT THE DESIGNER Hello - My name is Brett R. Spencer and I am a recent graduate from the University of Colorado - Boulder from the Program of Environmental Design. While my major is defined as Architectural Studies, this program has also diversified my learning experience by allowing me to gain insight in urban planning and landscape architecture, all while minoring in Business Innovation.

While design school has brought me many definitive challenges, it has also allowed me to identify my strengths and passions that can potentially contribute to an architectural design firm. These strengths consist of but are not limited to: photorealistic rendering, design ideation, development of construction documents, and presentation skills.

These areas of development are also supported by strong capabilities with handling the most up-to-date and efficient design software programs such as: SketchUp Pro, Revit, AutoCad, Rhino, Vray, Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. I also have developing skills working with Grasshopper and Adobe InDesign.

I am hoping my portfolio will provide an impressive insight into what exactly I can bring to a design firm as well as give you an idea on exactly what type of designer I am.

Project Ideologies: The inspiration behind these design ideas correlates to having two structures that juxtapose each other. One serves an entirely functional purpose, the other an entirely experiential service that corresponds to freedom of speech and the freedom of expression. Their purpose and form idealize juxtaposition in its nature.

The first interior rendering of the functional pavilion space depicts a generic scene of how the space can operate. With multitudes of working environments, the open floor allows for the free flowing of ideation and creativity. In the image, the immediate characteristics consist of the reception area/help desk, partial work place and the waiting area; all of which are design deliverables of the competition. What is also visible however, its an interior view of its relationship with the other structure. In doing so, one can experience how the two forms interact and compliment each other.

The second interior rendering represents an entry view of the functional building. Depicted is a larger view of the workspace, the coffee shop near the rear of the building, and the upper level conference room. The conference room also features an open concourse.

While the conference room is somewhat disconnected from the workspace, the concourse allows for openness and contiguity; two features that are imperative in the creative ideation process. The seclusion of the conference room also promotes privacy and discontinuancy, which creates an ideal atmosphere for work.

Design Concept: The above floor serves as a foreground for the art studio space. This art is subjective to freedom of speech and positive repercussions of Charlie Hebdo.

The bottom floor is representative of the negative connotations that are involved with freedom of speech and the shooting that took place at the Charle Hebdo headquarters in Paris.

Bottom Floor: The basement floor of this structure services as a test of patience for anyone partaking in this experience. Atop the wall are speakers that are constantly playing an oppressive speech. The acoustics of the enclosed area are poor, and the materials are reflective which create an echo.

With these two features, the space becomes oppressive, uncomfortable, and undesirable. It reflects upon the idea of hierarchy within the freedom of speech, and how one’s powerful voice can influence another’s feelings, emotions and sentimentalities, ultimately depicting the power and influence of this idealism.

Upper Floor: The upper floor design symbolizes the juxtaposition between the two levels. While the bottom floor reflects strong experiential feelings of oppression and segregation, the top represents limelight. It represents the hierarchy that is created with freedom of speech. If one were to rise above (literally and figuratively) the oppression, one is replenished with rejuvination, enlightenment and freedom.

The main characteristics that help establish these emotions are the open rooftop, the ability to physically be placed above the entrapment in a well-lit, easily accessed space, and the positive artwork that is reflected in this space.

The metal bars that help divide the two spaces create an acoustic vibrato that helps deteriorate the noise and distress from the base level.

This design was formulated in order to provide a functional space that can operate and circulate in an effective manner. There is also great consideration into have this space be interactive as well as systematic.

STONEBREWERY In July of 2015, the Stone Brewing Co. created a Request for Proposal for a new east coast brewery in order to successfully market their beer across the country. Our senior studio was essentially devoted into dividing into teams of four in which we created a hypothetical firm to respond to their RFP. In doing so, we created a formal RFP Response, a gant chart to organize our semester, then the final deliverables which consisted of our final ideations in drawings and renderings, all of which were presented to Mortenson Company in Denver, CO.

With this project, came much adaptation and understanding to both the RFP and the culture involved with Stone Brewing, CO. Some of the largest criteria, however, for the new brewery consisted of a space that is entirely functional, efficient, and aesthetic, but at the same time can produce tours and tastings, hold events, and become an essential landmark to the town of Richmond, Virginia.

In creating these designs, I formulated much precedent research in order to create an image that has already found success. In doing so, I researched current successes such as New Belgium Brewery, Avery Brewery, and Fort Collins Brewery.

Photoshop The ideology around the ‘Illumance’ sphere stands behind collecting solar energy and conducting it into a useful, restorative manner.

The spherical lights revolve among a slow moving axis, that circulates in both an X and Y direction. They all have a polycrystalline solar energy panel, that is sanc tioned to follow the sun’s path in Santa Monica throughout the day.

These solar panels track the sun from the moment the sun rises in the east to the second it sets in the west.

As solar energy is collected through the day, it is converted and stored until it is ready for use.

Kevin Kemp was my senior design studio instructor in which he aided on the Stone Brewing, Co. RFP response. In doing so, Kevin was able to secure a presentation in front of Mortenson Company, an architecture firm located in Denver, Co. Kevin, now retired, is an accomplished licensed architect from Chicago.

Daria Kotys-Schwartz has been my boss the last four years during my time I spent working in the Engineering Center. During this time Daria guided my development from a student into a working professional and has aided in many of the professional mannerisms I carry with me to date.
