The wedding industry adapts to COVID-19 DAWNMARIE FEHR

T

The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged wedding venues, but many are optimistic about the future.

he wedding industry has pivoted and reimagined itself countless times since March

of 2020 and will continue to do so through the 2022 wedding season. Though the past two years have slowed business down considerably, those in the industry predict that this year is shaping up to be a busy one for weddings of all types, especially outdoors. Barbara DuMont, manager of event venue Brownstone Gardens in Oakley, said the key will be flexibility. “Last year at this time, we were getting a little nervous about our April and May weddings, and we actually had to reschedule some of them,” said DuMont. “I don’t anticipate that this year. San Francisco is already lifting some restrictions, so are other cities, so I think in April we should be OK. I’m anticipating a great year. 2023 is already starting to book, because people want to get married and want to have weddings and we have to learn to work around the COVID, because it’s not going away.” DuMont said the changes Brownstone made revolve around state and local health mandates and extra cleaning procedures

to keep staff and guests safe. Beyond that, DuMont said choices are being left to the bride and groom. “I’ve had weddings where the wedding party doesn’t care, I’ve had weddings where they are doing temp checks at the door,” said DuMont. “Things change, and if we get back into social distancing, then I have to do that, but the bride and groom are setting the tone. Some are asking for more precautions than the restrictions from the county, and those restrictions change on a weekly basis.” Since Brownstone Gardens venue is completely outdoors, it has had an easier time than indoor venues. The Ryde Hotel event venue in Walnut Grove has two indoor and one outdoor wedding sites on its grounds and saw a big dent in their revenue when indoor

venues were closed. “When everything happened and COVID came about, our whole life was just a sad story, because there was no income, no revenue, and I never in my life thought that I would experience anything like this,” said manager Tina Flores. “When I meet with the brides or people planning an event, every event is my event, my dream, and we had been planning some events since 2018. So every time I had to cancel a wedding, it was like I was cancelling my own wedding. It was horrible.” Ryde had its own set of struggles during the past two years. Being a seasonal venue made obtaining federal aid difficult, and the hotel barely managed to pull through. They are now booking weddings for 2022 and look forward to serving wedding couples on

their grounds. “We are booking weddings now and we are having conversations I never thought about having before,” said Flores. “In the past, we talked about how many guests there would be, decorations, colors, food, and now you add in ‘what if we get shut down?’ and we talk about the need for spacing, the need for face coverings, and I always make sure they understand these are the government restrictions right now, and I don’t know what the restrictions will be tomorrow. It may be less or it may be more. I want them to fully understand the possibility we could be facing another shutdown.” As the 2022 wedding season gains momentum, DuMont said trends have taken a back seat to simply having a wedding this year. “Everyone asks ‘what’s the color of the year?’, and I’m seeing the same colors I did last year,” she said. “Dusty rose was over the top last year. I’m not seeing big changes other than they want to have a good time and they are over the COVID thing. They want to have their wedding and have it be something special and celebrate with friends and family.” Brownstone Gardens is open April through mid-November. rides everywhere hope to say “yes” to the dress of their dreams for the big day. A shop in Oakley is offering a variety of

vintage dresses with something for everyone.

Catch a Vintage Dream is on the second floor of the Rancho Co-Op in Oakley. There, owner Robin Lester-Gaines has curated a selection of wedding and prom dresses from the 1920s all the way through the 1990s. Lester-Gaines said no two dresses in the store are the same. “All the dresses are all different, from short dresses to long dresses to 10-foot trains. I never have the same dress twice, so you won’t see yourself coming and going, and the dresses are really affordable.” Besides dresses, Catch a Vintage Dream offers veils, jewelry, gloves, shoes, bags, furs and every other accessory a girl could want. While Lester-Gaines said she does a have a few modern pieces, the majority of her inventory is vintage, a look growing more popular every year. “Vintage is really in,” she said. “Gwen Stefani, when she recently got married, wore a vintage wedding gown, and Rachel Zoe wore a vintage wedding gown, and Kate Hudson is going to, so it’s something that is becoming normal. We have the ‘50s, we have the ‘30s, we have some really cool stuff. And your look will be one-of-a-kind from my shop.” Lester-Gaines dreamed of owning a bridal shop from the time she was 20 years old. After having her own wedding in the dress of her dreams, she said she wanted to help other people have that, as well. As with many dreams, life got in the way. But now, more than four decades later,

she has found the time and is pursuing her passion. Catch a Vintage Dream opened last May as a way for Lester-Gaines to help girls from Liberty High School with small budgets find prom dresses. Lani Maloney worked with Lester-Gaines to gather dresses and get them to girls in need to wear to the unofficial prom Liberty parents put together last spring. “Robin jumped in and said she could help with gowns and accessories and purses and things like that, and it was just wonderful,” said Maloney, who noted 50 dresses were donated. “I know she kept the gowns left over from last year and will continue the tradition of the free, donated dresses . . . she is a wonderful gal and just wanted to jump in and help the community.” The project went so well, Lester-Gaines began gathering wedding dresses and opened her shop. This year, she will work with all three local high schools to help girls in need find a beautiful prom dress. “My thought was we could work with the high school and the kids who didn’t have money to go out and get a prom dress, but could probably afford to come into us,” Lester-Gaines said. “We gave away dresses and helped with purses and shoes, and it was really fun. The girls would come in with their moms and sit and drink Martinelli’s apple juice and have a great time. It was so fun and the girls were so grateful.” Lester-Gaines shares her space with Norma Equinoa and her shop, Rosebud. Both share a love of vintage fashion and Equinoa said their combined selections offer East County a special selection of clothing and accessories. “Robin and I met a little while ago and found we had a lot of common interests, but the majority of it was clothes and purses and things like that,” said Equinoa. “I think her shop is excellent. She has a good combination of vintage

It’s very unique.” Equinoa said with the advent of internet shopping, bridal shops began to wane away, but there will always be people who want to touch, feel and try before purchasing. Catch a Vintage Dream caters to them, and the boutique offers a feast for the senses with yards of tulle, satin and fur to satisfy every wedding dream. “Others have told me it’s really comfortable and they like the shop and they are delighted something like that exists here,” said Lester-Gaines. “They always say, ‘I’ll bring my mother, I’ll bring my daughter,’ and they do. A lot of young girls come in and are really fascinated by what they see. We have a lot of fun here.” Catch a Vintage Dream is located at 5685 Main St. in Oakley. many situations, perhaps

The size of the wedding party also bears consideration when planning a wedding day timeline. Large parties will require more time to get ready, and that should be factored into couples’ timelines. Large parties also may be harder to corral and transport from place to place, so couples should build some extra time into their timelines to account for that. Small wedding parties can be easier to manage, so couples with small parties may be able to begin their timelines a little later in the day than those with large wedding parties.

none more so than on a couple’s wedding day. Many couples spend months, if not years, planning their weddings in the hopes that all that hard work will ultimately result in a day they will cherish forever. The sheer volume of things to do on a wedding day can make couples feel overwhelmed. Those feelings can be overcome by emphasizing timing on the day of the wedding. Couples can access wedding day timeline templates on various websites. But couples should remember that their weddings are unique, so online guidelines might not be realistic. A careful consideration of a handful of variables specific to couples’ weddings can help them craft timelines that make their big day go smoothly.

Weather is the most unpredictable variable couples need to plan for on their wedding days. As the wedding day approaches, couples can monitor the day’s forecast and then make any necessary changes to account for inclement weather. Dress it up

Brides need not eschew white if they prefer to wear it for their second weddings. White, cream, ivory, or other shades are acceptable. Also, brides can make their gowns as lavish or as simplistic as they desire. The length and style of the dress should reflect the formality and scope of the event.

Make it unique

Couples who have been married before may want to set this new occasion apart from their previous weddings. Brides magazine experts suggest discussing previous celebrations and what can be done differently this time around. Couples can use this opportunity to get to know each other more intimately by personalizing their festivities.

Social from page 5B hired to document the happy couple’s big day from start to finish. Social media boards are digital screens that display social media walls. Live event social media boards collect content from social media channels and display it on a single digital screen. Users, in this case a couple’s guests, simply use a predetermined hashtag when posting photos and the images are then displayed on digital screens in real time. This can be a fun way to engage guests during the reception. ♦ Live stream the wedding Live streams became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic, when couples getting married had to pare down their guest lists to adhere to social distancing guidelines. But live streams can continue to be used after the pandemic, as there will always be guests who can’t make it to the wedding. Facebook Live has been a go-to social media platform for live streaming weddings during the pandemic, and it can be used to involve loved ones in the festivities even if they can’t be there in person. Live streaming via social media may be especially useful

similar the second time around, but additional documents, such as a divorce decree or death certificate, may be necessary. These legal documents also will be needed for men and women who intend to change their last names after getting married.

for couples who want to enjoy destination weddings, which tend to be small affairs due to travel constraints. ♦ Hashtag the wedding A couple-specific hashtag can serve as something akin to a wedding album, only it’s one everyone can easily access via the couple’s chosen social media platform. Encourage guests to hashtag photos from the wedding so everyone can have a good time looking back on the ceremony and reception once the day has come and gone. ♦ Plan with your party Social media can be as fun, inclusive and useful when planning the wedding as it can during the wedding itself. Brides and grooms can create their own private Pinterest boards and share them with the wedding party. Everyone can then use the private board to bounce ideas off each other. Couples can infuse a little fun into the Pinterest board by encouraging their groomsmen and bridesmaids to post outrageous outfit ideas or submit sing-along song requests to be played during the reception.

Alternatives to diamond engagement rings Money magazine reports

the average engagement ring costs about $5,800. An engagement ring symbolizes the start of a lifelong commitment and may even set the tone for a couple’s wedding day. Jewelry styles are personal, and grooms-to-be should carefully research their significant others’ preferences in terms of precious metals, colors and gemstones. Even though tradition holds that a diamond gemstone is classic for engagement rings, these precious stones are not the only options. In fact, before World War II, just 10 percent of proposals involved diamond engagement rings. That number jumped to 80 percent by 1990. However, many modern couples lean toward other offerings not only for their uniqueness, but also to save money. Couples have many beautiful alternatives to diamonds that they can explore when shopping for engagement rings. Those seeking something unique can embrace these engagement ring options.

Amethyst

This vibrant, lavender-hued stone can be breathtaking when cut the correct way. Purple shades have long been associated with royalty, making an amethyst fitting for such an occasion as special as an engagement. Because amethysts, which are less expensive than diamonds, are a seven on the Mohs scale for gemstone hardness, they can be durable.

Knot rings

These rings do not have a center stone. Rather, they’re designed to be a tied knot or infinity symbol. These rings can be particularly sentimental as they represent true, unbroken love.

Opal

Gemstones, like flowers, have been assigned certain meanings. Tying the engagement ring to one of them can infuse more symbolism into the relationship. Opal, for example, represents love, passion, creativity, spontaneity, and inspiration. Those traits seem tailor-made for surprise proposals.

Sapphire

While sapphire stones often are blue, they can also be yellow, green, pink, and white. Sapphires are the thirdhardest mineral. A white sapphire can be the perfect diamond replacement

Bride & Guest Registration

Red is the definitive color of love. A Valentine’s Day proposal can be made even more special by presenting an engagement ring with a red gemstone.
