Police standoff in Brentwood ends in murder-suicide as gunman shoots himself By Jeff Weisinger Staff Writer

A standoff between a gunman and the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff ended in a murder-suicide early Tuesday morning as the gunman turned the gun on himself and died later at a nearby hospital, according to the Sheriff’s office. The original medical call came in shortly before 4 p.m. Monday after a woman was shot following an altercation with the unnamed suspect on the 200 block of East Sims Road. Sheriff’s deputies, and later a SWAT team, were dispatched to the home, and after making contact with the suspect, the suspect refused to leave the bedroom of the house and had several

firearms. The suspect told negotiators that he shot the woman and that she was dead in the bedroom. The initial reports said that the suspect claimed that the woman was “cold to the touch” after he shot her, and that it was believed that he had an AK-47 and several other firearms locked in with him. Police blocked off more than half of Sims Road as the standoff went on through the night. The Sheriff’s office said in an update that later in the night that a gunshot was heard from the bedroom, and when the SWAT team entered, they found the unidentified dead woman and the suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Future Oakley City Councilmembers will see a pay hike from the current $456.75 a month to $800 for their services after taking into consideration the cost of inflation and as a measure to encourage more people to run for council in the future. The Oakley City Council passed a motion 4-1 in their meeting on Tuesday night, Jan. 23, for council members for the salary increase. Councilmember Dr. George Fuller voted against the motion. The current salary amount was set by the City Council in 2014. The new salary will take effect in 2025 after members of

Bill Dodd (D-Napa), city councils in California can now adjust their maximum pay to reflect inflation as measured by the California Consumer Price Index. The bill is also an effort to increase participation and diversity in California city councils. In June last year, Gov. New-

som signed Senate Bill 239 into law effective in January this year. The previous state law tied the maximum salary allowed based on the city’s population. However, the maximum amounts set by state law have not been increased since 1984. The legislation now allows Oakley, with a population of 43,771 as measured by the 2021 United States Census, to set salaries up to $1,275 per month. see Get paid page 19A

Jovita Mendoza was not present for the discussion. Discussion of the senior activity center’s programs was first approved by the council in September based on resident concerns. The scope was widened to also include the entire Parks and Recreation Department’s slate of recreational activities. Three consulting firms were interviewed by the council: Matrix Consulting Group, Zilo International Group and Berry Dunn, with prices for the project ranging from $20,000 to approximately $100,000, according to the agenda packet for the meeting. The council chose Bay Areabased Matrix Consulting for a price “not to exceed $49,600.” “This is definitely a chal-
