City swears in new mayor, vice mayor by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

Oakley’s new mayor, Randy Pope, is no stranger to the seat. Pope, who served as the city’s 2014 mayor, was selected by the council this week to fill the seat in 2018. Firstterm Councilmember Claire Alaura was chosen to serve as vice mayor. The city’s oneyear mayor and vice mayor positions are selected by the council every December. “It’s an honor; a privilege,” said Pope, who spent

the last year as vice mayor. “It’s very humbling that I have been selected a city councilman and now mayor.” Pope, an Oakland Police sergeant, said he considers himself a statesman rather than a politician and will live by the code that “actions speak louder than words.” He wasted no time stating his goals for the year, saying just minutes after being selected that he hopes to increase civic engagement. see Mayor page 26

Former Roddy Ranch manager pleads guilty to fraud and theft Roddy ready to put past behind him by Aly Brown Staff Writer

Press file photo

Kevin Fitzgerald, former Roddy Ranch manager, has pleaded guilty to charges of fraud and theft.

Kevin Fitzgerald, former general manager of the Roddy Ranch Golf Club and a man once close to the Roddy family, recently pleaded guilty to charges of fraud and theft after stealing over $300,000 from owner Jack Roddy over the course of two years. Roddy said little about the case – only that he was satisfied the law handled it appropriately. “I just feel that what this man did hurt many, many people and what he did was wrong,” said Roddy. Deputy District Attorney Dodie Katague said Fitzgerald will now serve a sentence of six years, while his co-conspirator in the criminal activity,

Mark Mattson, has an arraignment date of Dec. 20. “(Fitzgerald) was lying the whole time, telling Jack that the business was doing well when it wasn’t, which has hurt Jack and lost him a lot of money,” Katague said. “Jack treated him like a son and was going to give him everything when he died.” Though the sting of betrayal is still fresh, Roddy is taking the time to focus on cattle ranching. “This has always been a cattle ranch. The golf course was once successful, but things happened up there that never should have happened, and Roddy Ranch is still a cattle ranch,” said Roddy, whose home is nestled in prime country off Deer Valley Road. In addition, Roddy has taken steps to help preserve this part of the dwindling Wild West for future generations by selling his land to the East

Tunnels of Joy honor lost friend by Aly Brown Staff Writer

While glistening lights in front yards during winter may signify the holiday season to most, to one Brentwood neighborhood with a display of lighted tunnels, it also serves as a memorial to a departed friend and a future fundraising site. Each evening as the sky darkens, tunnels of white lights shine along the sidewalks of La Costa Drive – now a destination for Christmas-light sightseers. The tunnels began with one home and has since spread down the street as more neighbors learn of their significance. In 2009, the close-knit neighborhood of La Costa Drive was rattled by the loss of a dear friend and resident, Joy Bursch, who was only in her early

40s when she died of breast cancer. She left behind three young children. “Joy was the kind of person who just loved on you,” said La Costa resident Donna Phipps. “She drew everyone to her.” And it was last year, while Phipps and another La Costa neighbor shopped for Christmas decor at Homegoods, that Joy’s name on every shelf rekindled an idea she’d had in the past. Phipps turned to the neighborhood’s private Facebook page to share. “I thought we could all decorate using ‘joy’ decorations to honor her,” said Phipps. “Some of the neighbors are newer and didn’t know her, so we shared with them what kind of person she was, and everyone responded positively.” Neighbors grabbed ‘joy’ decor to place outdoors. But one of the original neighbors, who knew Joy personally,

Yvette Gardizi and her family created a tunnel with PVC pipe wrapped in white string lights and placed it in front of their house. And by the time this season rolled around, the tunnels became contagious. Neighbors new and old lined their portion of the sidewalk with similar lights in what the original La Costa residents say showcases the ripple effect of Joy’s kindness. They dubbed it ‘Tunnels of Joy.’ “I think the reason this spread here is because we’re a very close street,” said

That kindness motivates you to do the same thing when other people move in.” Now the block is filled with people walking through the tunnels for their glimpse of joy shining in the night. And the neighbors have decided to use its popularity as a means for raising funds for the Mornones family – another La Costa residence struck by the devastatsee Tunnels page 12

Brentwood planners approve apartment complex “ The beautiful part is

by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

The Brentwood Planning Commission recently cleared way for construction of a controversial apartment complex south of Sand Creek Road and east of O’Hara Avenue. The project provides for 14 three-story apartment buildings, totaling 166 units, to be built on an 8.3-acre parcel just south of the Coppergate townhome development. Residents have been vehemently opposing the project on social media since the city released plans on its Facebook page in late November. As of Wednesday, that page featured 34 comments, most opposing the project. “NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO,” wrote Amber Santiago. “Fix the roads first. Open up your firehouses. Fix infrastructures. Stop being greedy by building houses. Bring commerce to the area, so people don’t have to commute two hours to be able to pay their mortgage. Entice warehouses to come here. Manufacturing. ECommerce. Industry. Stop with the piddly retail jobs that don’t pay more than minimum wage.” Another resident also opposed the apartment development. “That area should be a shopping center with restaurants and with a gas station,” added Yolanda Castro. The proposed project’s land use is permitted under the Brentwood Boulevard specific plan, which saw the area broken down

into district zones and calls for high-density residential developments to be prioritized in the area earmarked for the controversial apartments. Commercial, office and light industrial development is also permitted. “This district is intended to provide a transition between employment areas and residential areas located primarily near the downtown and to serve as an attractive gateway to the downtown,” said Debbie Hill, City of Brentwood associate planner. “A wide range of uses are allowed in order to meet neighborhood needs that complement and strengthen the historic downtown area.” Brentwood Mayor Bob Taylor pointed out people must have a place to live and the city is working hard to bring jobs to Brentwood.

“Our main objective is to have jobs,” he said. “Our slogan right now is jobs, jobs, jobs.” The planning commission, limited to addressing design review-related issues only, gave the go-ahead for the project. But it insisted that developers agree to use tile roofing that matches other developments in the city and incorporate a traffic-calming measure between the complex and its recreation center to be sited on the opposite side of Business Center Drive. The apartment units will be accessed via a gated driveway off an extension of Business Center Drive. A separate access point for emergency vehicles only will be designed along O’Hara Avenue. “The beautiful part is they are apartments, and hopefully we can have young families going into those locations. And if we are going to have kids back and forth I

think that is a minimal change there that I would like to see,” said commission chair, Dirk Zeigler on the added traffic-calming measure. The proposed project calls for the complex to be broken up into three building types, with two being three-story structures and one being a 10-plex with two and threestory elements. All will feature one- or twobedroom units. Arthur Lorenzini, principal of Claremont Companies LLC, said he’s excited to move forward with the plan. The company has developed projects in Brentwood since 2002 including Brentwood Self Storage and the Sand Creek Business Center on Sand Creek Road adjacent to the Los Medanos campus. HEALTH & BEAUTY

Keeping those savings rolling in Every morning when I get up, I go to my phone or computer and check my emails and, yes, Facebook. I openly admit I like Facebook, since my ‘friends’ are mostly family members, mommies and grandparents touting pictures of Senior their adorable loved orner ones. The emails, on the other hand, are filled with discounts and store sales offering the very last opportunity to save big on everything from clothes to gift Marla items to, well, you Luckhardt name it, and it’s on sale and in my inbox. I am warned to act now as tomorrow will be too late, and I will have lost a golden opportunity to purchase a three-month supply of wrinkle cream or every kind of fleece imaginable for under $7.99. Everyone knows I am holiday organized. My gifts are purchased way in advance, and I wrap each present when I get home, since it’s just easier on my back to do it piecemeal. The problem with shopping in October and early November is those darn emails that tell me I have either overpaid for some items or I will miss out on amazing bargains if I pass on the lighted reindeer slippers. This year, I pushed it out until mid-November, but even that has its pitfalls. I can’t resist a bargain! Grandpa keeps saying, “You’re done, right?” I say “Sure, maybe!”

C

When you retire and your income goes from a paycheck to social security, there are methods to stretching it over the month that includes looking for discounts, using coupons, finding huge price reductions and using free shipping options wherever you can find them. Different credit cards have bonuses, and Grandpa is an expert in navigating the internet looking for the ones that give you the most cash back. He labels the cards, so I remember which ones to use for gas, restaurants, groceries or regular shopping in the stores. If I make purchases online, I make sure there is no tax, shipping or restocking fees. This is an art. There used to be an annual fee on most cards, and there are still some that sneak them through, but for the most part, they pay you to shop with their card. Stores will always have sale items, but it’s the coupons that are the most fun to play with. If you don’t have one, smile and ask the clerk behind the register if they have one you can use or if you can find one on your phone. They will usually help you. Remember be kind. It’s not only the right thing to do, but the hardworking clerk will be more likely to honor the day-old, expired, $10off coupon if you say hello and ask politely. Our local Penney’s is known for that, and sometimes, they will ask for your phone and look up a discount for you. Some stores will price match, so search for the item you wish to purchase and then show it to the

END OF YEAR WRAP-UP

Let’s have a look at how the real estate market looks at the end of 2017. INTEREST RATES – The Federal Reserve has raised their benchmark rate a few times over the last year or two. They have warned they are ready to continue to raise rates again if they see signs of inflation. So far, mortgage rates are still very low, hovering around 4 percent. Conforming loan limits were just increased, so that may help a few more borrowers buy homes. INVENTORY – The number of resale homes on the market is still very low across East Contra Costa County, although it is higher than this time last year. We do have quite a few new home subdivisions with available inventory. So overall, we have more for buyers to choose from then two or three years ago. PRICES – Prices appreciated about 5 percent so far in 2017. That’s slower than the 10 to 20 percent we’ve seen the last few years. That doesn’t mean anything is ‘wrong.’ Prices bottomed out around 2010, and then we saw some big increases when the market was

rebounding. So, 2017 was a more measured year and not subject to the big swings up or down that we experienced from 2005 to 2015. AFFORDABILITY – Many homebuyers were getting squeezed out of the market the last few years, because overall, household income hasn’t increased at the same rate home prices have. There are many signs the overall economy continues to recover, so this may lead to an increase in wages, which does help buyers afford more home. Except that when more buyers can afford more, that drives prices up. As long as we don’t see any big negative shocks, I’m guessing 2018 will be about like 2017 was – relatively low inventory and rates, modest gains in appreciation and affordability still a problem for many buyers. If you have questions on this or any other real estate topic, call me at (925) 240-MOVE (6683). Voted “Best of Brentwood” multiple times. A Revocable Living Trust (“RLT”) is a legal document created during your lifetime that allows you to leave your real and personal property to beneficiaries of your choice. An RLT is very much like a Will with one BIG exception: there is no Probate with an RLT. This means that your RLT and the property in it will not be made public or subject to court supervision. Given the high cost of probate proceedings in California, which can easily be 4-6% of the fair market value of the assets irrespective of the debt against the assets, this is reason enough - especially if you own any real property. In most cases, the cost of transfer of title with an RLT is few hundred dollars. Also, there is a minimal time delay incurred in transferring assets to beneficiaries with an RLT because no court approval is required. In a probate, it can take years to transfer title. RLTs are called “living” because they are created while you are alive and your property is legally transferred to the trust when you create it. RLTs are “revocable” because you may, at any time prior to your death, revoke or change them. In fact, as there are changes in your life including marriage, divorce, the death of a beneficiary, or a change in financial or property situation, you should have the RLT reviewed by an attorney in order to ensure the changes are properly reflected in the Trust. While you are alive, you still own all of the property that has been transferred to your RLT. You can still sell the property in the trust, borrow against it, spend it or give it away. Assets in an RLT are treated much the same as direct ownership of property for income tax purposes. There are no additional taxes, tax returns or any necessity for

separate tax payer identification. Sometimes people say they are not concerned about probate fees because they are not going to be around. However, an RLT can be very important to you when you are alive because if you become incompetent due an accident or illness there can be an easy transfer of management of your property and affairs without the necessity of a court appointed conservator. Sometimes people are worried that RLT will cost a lot of money and take a lot of time to set up and maintain. For most people, an Estate Plan, including an RLT and all of the ancillary documents including a Power of Attorney and Healthcare Directive, should not cost more than $2,000-$2,500. Most attorneys allow people to make payments over time for the work. If you have separate property from a prior marriage or business interests that need to be included, it may be more, but then it is even more important that you properly plan for distribution of your assets in accordance with your wishes and without the prying eyes of the public and court system. If you have real property in the state of California or elsewhere, you should carefully consider how you are currently holding title to the property and whether an RLT may be a better idea for you. since I had two. He seemed pleased, and although he was still not delighted with the whole shopping thing, it lessened his burden. That was until his wife came by, saw that he had the discount and went back for more! Oh well, I tried. I met up with them shortly afterward at Costco, and she hugged me and told me they saved over $150! He just smiled weakly and asked if I had any discounts coupons at Costco. Sorry! Happy bargain hunting everyone. Marla Luckhardt is a Brentwood resident who works with senior care and advocacy groups. Email her at marla2054@aol.com.

After a divorce or separation, it is very common to experience a desire for closure. In order to come to terms with this need for closure, it helps to understand why closure is desired in the first place. The biggest reason that closure is desired after any breakup is because splits can cause an identity crisis for both men and women. When you’re married or in a serious relationship, a lot of your identity is tied to your significant other. Rediscovering your own identity is so important to finding closure. Go out and do things that you used to love to do before you were married, perhaps things that your significant other did not enjoy. Also try reconnecting with old friends and focusing on yourself. Here are nine additional ways to get some closure after a separation or divorce:

Recognize, relieve sources of pets’ stress Stress can affect anyone, even household pets. Although life may seem footloose and fancy free for companion animals, they have their share of stress as well. It may be hard to believe that dogs, cats, birds and other animals can suffer from stress, but certain situations or scenarios may trigger a stressful response in pets, and pet owners should learn to recognize such stressors and do what they can to help pets avoid them. Research indicates stress, especially constant sources of stress, can impact pet health and well-being. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology found when dogs are under stress, their bodies release an excessive amount of the fight-or-flight hormone, norepinephrine. This can alter gut bacteria and interfere with gastrointestinal tract motility. Resulting diarrhea can compound stressful situations and exac-

erbate the situation. During stressful situations, pets’ blood pressure may climb, breathing may become more rapid, heart rate may increase, and the immune system can become less effective – instances that would also occur in humans, according to the pet advice site Pet-Happy. Birds are very good at picking up stress in people, which may contribute to their own stress. Cats can become stressed over loud music and noises, changes in food or litter brands, having new carpet or furniture installed or a number of visitors in the home. Some of the most common dog stress triggers are novelty, housing changes, loud noises, changes in household members and changes in schedule. Once stress is identified apart from any other health issues, pet owners can take steps to reduce it. – Courtesy Metro Creative

Frazier recognized for transportation efforts The California State Association of Counties (CSAC) has chosen Assemblymember Jim Frazier, D-Discovery Bay, to receive its Distinguished Service Award for 2017. “As chair of the Assembly Transportation Committee, Assemblymember Frazier led the charge in the assembly to fix California’s local roads, state highways and transit systems,” said Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson, immediate past president of CSAC. “His efforts in the legislature, the media and in many other settings eventually lead to the passage of SB 1 and ACA 5 in April of this year. He has been an earnest and steadfast partner and helped ensure that local governments and local taxpayers also see the benefits from this landmark legislation.” CSAC is comprised of county supervisors and staff from all the state’s counties and represents county governments before the legislature, state administrative agencies and the federal government. CSAC places a strong emphasis on educating the public about the value and need for county programs and services. “CSAC represents the leadership of the 58 counties that make up the most diverse, successful and forward-thinking state in the nation,” Frazier said. “It is humbling to be singled out by them for this recognition. I look forward to a lasting partnership with CSAC, as we continue to work together on behalf our constituents.”

New play debuts at Trilogy Trilogy at the Vineyards has a new drama group and is presenting its first production, “The House of Tomorrow,” Jan. 13 and 14, at The Mount Diablo Event Center, Club Los Meganos, 1700 Trilogy Parkway, in Brentwood. This funny, yet moving, play is made up of 21 scenes about how people face constant change and unexpected challenges as they age, yet still dream about tomorrow. There are scenes with relatable characters and their experiences – a couple suddenly forced to downsize, siblings sparring over who will

take in their mother, a couple navigating the foreign world of online dating, a mother encouraging her daughter to ‘find herself’ and leave home at last, a woman frazzled by technology, a man retiring at last from a job he never liked and sisters finding out more about their mother than they ever imagined. “The House of Tomorrow,” written and directed by Trilogy resident Susan Shear, has an ensemble cast of Trilogy actors. Tickets are $15 and would be a perfect holiday gift for any senior. For ticket information, call 925-809-7180.

Library foundation receives major grant The Dean & Margaret Lesher Foundation has awarded the Brentwood Library Foundation a $300,000 grant for furnishings and technology in the new downtown library. The grant will greatly assist in keeping the library on track to open late summer 2018, ready to serve the communities of Brentwood, Byron and Discovery Bay. The Dean & Margaret Lesher Foundation, based in Walnut Creek, was founded in 1989 and is deeply committed to education, literacy and

civic engagement, all of which will be furthered through Brentwood’s new public library. The foundation’s mission is to enhance the quality of life in Contra Costa County through charitable giving for education, arts, children and families. The Lesher Foundation will be recognized in the library on the top tier of the Keystone Donor Circle. The Brentwood Library Foundation continues to raise funds for additional technology, public art and an increased book and audiovisual collection. The library will also have a makerspace with equipment such as a 3-D printer. “The Lesher Foundation grant is an invaluable part of our fundraising effort,” said the Brentwood Library Foundation President, Diane Alexander. “It provides us an opportunity to build upon the wonderful generosity of individuals, businesses and groups who share our desire to make the new library a place with exceptional resources and spaces for our community.” For more information, visit www. brentwoodlibraryfoundation.org.

Local McDonald’s getting face-lift by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

McDonald’s in both Oakley and Discovery Bay will soon receive some upgrades. Though improvements are still in the planning stages, things are moving forward. Last week, the county asked the Discovery Bay Community Services District Board (CSD) members for their input on the project located in the Sandy Cove Shopping Center. “It’s on the agenda to see if the board has any comments,” explained General Manager Mike Davies. “Before they go into extensive remodeling, the county requires (McDonald’s) to get comments (from the CSD Board). We don’t have any power in the matter.” During the meeting, board members discussed the proposed renovations, which include both indoor and outdoor upgrades. “I don’t see anything that’s really ridiculous,” CSD Director Bill Mayer said. “In some of the upscale communities, there are McDonald’s, and they blend. The only thing I don’t want to see (is this one standing out). The (new) color is very quiet and neutral.” Director Kevin Graves wanted to make sure the aesthetics of the community were kept in mind. “It would be my wish that we would recommend to the county that they look at how they set up the original guidelines – that (the

The Grand Menorah lighting

new plans) fall within the guidelines they originally set up for that shopping center; that’s all,” Graves said. “Put it back on them, because they are the ones putting the guidelines together.” Noticeable changes will be the rooflines, which will be peaked rather than flat, and exterior color, which will be a neutral tan rather than blue and white. Town staff had reviewed McDonald’s proposed plans prior to the meeting and found no significant concerns with the project. After some discussion, the board chose to leave review up to the county. “I gather that the board has no other comment than to request that the county review their prior guidelines to make sure that this is in conformance with the prior guidelines on color and structure and so forth,” Board President Leete explained. The motion passed without resistance. Maria Gonzales, manager at the Discovery Bay McDonald’s, said that the renovations will start in April after the Oakley McDonald’s has had its facelift. “Oakley will start in January, and then they will get to us maybe two months after that,” Gonzales said. “They are going to come in and remodel the floors, and new machines are coming in – the self-order takers. They are going to try to put the playground inside instead of outside.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net

Liberty boys’ basketball team finishes third in Stonebarger Tournament by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

The Liberty High School boys’ basketball team knocked off Foothill 49-42 to capture third place in the Frank Stonebarger Tournament on the Lions’ campus. The Lions (2-2) led the entire game but had to hold off the pesky Falcons, who outscored Liberty 38-38 in the second half. Ben Smith led the Lions with 21 points, while Jay Butterfield contributed 11 points. “We hit some big shots down the stretch,” said Liberty head coach Jon Heinz. “Butterfield came off the bench and hit some big 3s, and we knocked down some free throws. It was a tough high school game.” Liberty jumped out to a 21-4 lead at halftime, but Foothill roared back, outscoring Liberty 17-8 in the third quarter to pull within 29-21 at the end of the third quarter. With 4 minutes left in the game, the Falcons (3-3) cut the deficit to 5 on JT Mcdermott’s two free throws, but the Lions outscored Foothill 8-4 over the next 2 minutes to take a 43-34 lead with 2:08 left in the game.

“The first half, defensively, how do you play any better, giving up 4 points?” Heinz said. “The problem is, we were up 21-4 at halftime, but we should have probably been up 35-4. We missed a lot of easy ones today.” Smith scored all 8 of Liberty’s points in the third quarter and poured in 9 of the team’s 20 points in the fourth. Foothill’s Gary Pride and Mcdermott combined for 24 points in the contest – 21 in the second half – and Devin Powell accounted for 12 points on four 3-pointers. “The second half, they have some good players and the refs called the game so tight,” Heinz said. “The way Foothill got back into the game is that they took all the fouls on us, and they did a good job not fouling in the second half.” Liberty opened the tournament with a 65-14 win over Central Valley before falling 49-47 to Campolindo on the tournament’s second day to vault the Lions into the third-place matchup. The Lions were scheduled to return to the court against Patterson in the West High Holiday Classic on Thursday. Results of that game were not available at press time.

Falcons prepare for BVAL repeat by Michael Dixon Correspondent

The Freedom boys’ soccer team knows that improving on what it did a season ago will not be easy. In 2017, the Falcons posted a 20-3-3 mark. That record included a perfect 10-0-0 record in Bay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) play, the No. 2 seed in the North Coast Section (NCS) playoffs, and a postseason run to the NCS semifinals. But this year’s team is off to a strong 3-1-2 start in the preseason and is ready to make its own impact. “Every season is different, bringing new challenges, and every year the team has a new look with seniors leaving and younger players arriving,” head coach Sal Acevedo said. “But the aspirations don’t change for us; we have the same objectives. And obviously, last year’s team set the bar very high for us this year and for years to come, so we understand the challenges that lie ahead. But this team wants to set its own mark.” Acevedo will rely on return-

ing players like senior midfielders Martin Padilla, Guillermo Fierros and Jorge Rondan; senior defender Alec Real; junior forward Erick Zambrano; and junior goalkeeper Bryan Cruz. Acevedo noted that while it’s still very early, he does anticipate a tough, competitive BVAL. But the Falcons won’t open league play until Jan. 9 against Pittsburg. There are nonleague matchups before that the coach looks at as good barometers for his team. “Upcoming games against solid teams such as Concord, Clayton Valley, Ygnacio Valley and College Park are matches that I anticipate will give us a good idea of where we stand as a team,” he said. To repeat 2017’s success, Freedom will need big contributions from players in new roles or who are completely new to the program. Those players include senior midfielder Douglass Minor, junior midfielder Pedro Pantoja, junior defender Brendan Flores, sophomore defender Giovanni Maya, who holds the early team lead in steals, and freshman midfielder Alberto Padilla, who tops the Falcons

in goals and is tied for the team lead in assists. “I am very pleased with the start of our preseason,” Acevedo said. “The team is focused and working very hard for the goals that we have set for ourselves, and though it is still very early and we have a lot to improve, we’ve had some good results and done some good things on the field.” There is a long way to go in the season. But something that’s pleased Acevedo early on is how quickly his team has done things that normally take a while to accomplish. “This year’s team has a unique team bonding that began from day one,” the coach said. “Usually we rely on several team-building activities that take some time to create a good family atmosphere and bring the team together. This team already had a very good sense of family unity. They respect each other and trust each other on and off the field, and they are very unselfish on the pitch. They understand the true meaning of working together as one.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net

A triple threat The Freedom softball trio of Makenzie Nelson, Allyson Ferreira and Ashley Livermore recently signed their letters of intent to Santa Clara University, Sonoma State University and LIU Post, respectively. Ferreira has hit .393 with 72 hits and 25 RBI in three seasons for the Falcons, according to Maxpreps. Livermore hit .438 with seven hits and seven RBI during her junior season. Nelson hit .188 last season, scoring 16 runs.

DECEMBER 15, 2017

Athlete of the Week by Tony Kukulich Correspondent

Name: Giles Jackson

School: Freedom High School Sport/Position: Football/Running back Year: Junior Coach: Kevin Hartwig

About: The youngest of five children, Freedom High School junior Giles Jackson was drawn to football from an early age. “I like the physicalness,” Jackson explained. “I like hitting people.” Jackson started playing football when he was 7. At 15, he’s now playing his second year on the varsity squad and made the move from wide receiver to running back at the start of the season. “I’ve always liked running back,” Jackson said. “But last year we had Ronnie (Rivers), of course. I played receiver. That worked for me, and I was good at it. I can play both (positions); it doesn’t matter.” According to Jackson, team camaraderie is an important component of the success that Freedom has had this season, and he is quick to attribute much of his personal success to his teammates on the offensive line. “We’re all brothers,” said Jackson. “We all have each other’s back for everything.” In addition to football, Jackson also runs track and specializes in the 100- and 200-meter races. Jackson said that most of his free time

is spent in the gym and he ends each workout by running a mile. Or he can be found playing video games, particularly “Madden NFL.” And just a few weeks shy of his 16th birthday, he is looking forward to getting his driver’s license.

Future Plans:

Jackson’s hope is to play football for a Division I college. He’s been interested in the University of Oregon since the third grade because of its quick-paced game, but he’s still undecided as to where he will attend.

Coach’s Quote:

“He’s a great kid, and he’s a real good football player. He puts in the work. We switched him from receiver to running back this year by need. He was like, ‘I’m in.’ Actually, he came to us and said that he was ready to play running back before we officially let him know what was going on. He said, ‘Coach, I’ll get it done.’ He’s a hardworking kid, and it’s a good thing he’s only a junior.”

A terrific trio

From left, Julia Gonzalez, Jiana Cortero and Madison MacPherson recently represented the Liberty Union High School District at the California Interscholastic Federation Cross-Country State Championships. Cortero ran a personal record of 19:34 to finish in the top 100. She is the first Freedom High School cross-country athlete to medal at the North Coast Section meet and the first to reach the state meet two years in a row. Liberty’s Gonzalez finished in the top 30 statewide in the Division II race with a time of 18:47.4. MacPherson, also of Liberty, placed 51st in the state race, finishing in 19:13.6.

Local soccer players fuel Los Medanos squad Several former East County high school soccer players recently helped the Los Medanos College (LMC) women’s soccer team finish second in the Bay Valley Junior College Conference. The team went 11-3 in League games and finished 12-6-2 overall. “We were able to bring in some top level local recruits that usually go away to other junior colleges,” said LMC head coach Zach Sullivan. “We are trying to develop a winning culture at LMC. Our No. 1 priority is helping players transfer on to the fouryear level to play college soccer or just continue on as a student.” LMC soccer has had a huge turnaround in two seasons. In 2016, Sullivan and Sal Acevedo stepped in to coach LMC only a week before the semester started. They had no time to recruit and had to find players on campus to play for the team. The team had two wins that year. In 2017, with a full year to recruit plus the addition of Sean Chapman to the coaching staff, the team ended the season with 12 wins and a second place finish in conference for the first time since

2007. Multiple players were honored with all-league accolades including Bay Valley Conference (BVC) Goal Keeper of the Year Norma Jara Ruiz (Ygnacio Valley High School) and BVC Forward of the Year Autumn Kish (Deer Valley High School). Ruiz, with the lowest goals against average (1.04) in the BVC, will be transferring to Long Beach State next fall. Team captain Kish was a constant attack presence with her long dribbling runs and goal-scoring ability. Selected to allBVC first team along with Ruiz and Kish were midfielder Vanessa Kualapai (Escalon High School), defender Emma Spears (Freedom High School) and defender Brianna Olmedo (Deer Valley High School). Spears and Kualapai were also team captains. Selected to the second team all-BVC squad were midfielder Sydney Torrano (Freedom High School), midfielder/striker Adriana Urrutia (Deer Valley/Dozier-Libbey High School) and midfielder Mia Castro (Clayton Valley Charter High School).

Sullivan said that LMC has a fulltime athletic counselor and can help with picking classes, financial aid and more. “The LMC soccer team is like a family and the girls are a tight group, and that is a huge reason for the program’s rapid success,” Sullivan said. “LMC is in the process of completing a $60 million state- of- the- art student union and athletic complex that will be among the best in the state.” Sullivan is also the director of coaching for Diablo FC and his U19 girls team is currently ranked No. 1 in the country with 11 players committed

to four-year colleges. Acevedo brings a vast amount of soccer coaching experience serving as the Heritage Soccer Club’s technical director as well as Freedom High School boys’ varsity coach. Chapman, an assistant coach, brings NCAA Division II experience from the Academy of Arts University, San Francisco and is a long-term staff coach with the California Youth Soccer Association. For more information on the LMC squad or to join, email Sullivan at losmedanossoccer@gmail.com or call 707-816-1220.

advances, under the terms of said Deed of Trust, fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is: $ 311,413.18. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure, and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Juvenile arrested for Discovery Bay school break-in by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer

A 14-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with this week’s break-in and vandalism at Discovery Bay Elementary School. The male juvenile, a resident of Discovery Bay, was apprehended by sheriff’s deputies Dec. 13, around 1:30 a.m., when a campus security team spotted the youth on the school’s roof. “The kid was up there on the roof wearing a ski mask and saying he was responsible for the graffiti earlier,” said Contra Costa Sheriff’s deputy Ryan MacLennan. “The firemen came, we went up on the roof and took him down. He said it was all just a joke and that he wasn’t going to hurt anybody.” The arrest effectively ends a string of events that began in the early morning hours of Monday, Dec. 11, when officials at the Byron Union School District (BUSD) were notified of a break-in at the elementary school campus. Surveillance footage of the incident showed what appeared to be an adult male going through an unlocked window, but deputies now believe it was the tall, 14-year-old boy. A pair of computers and a set of walkietalkies were stolen, but at least one of the computers has since been found. Messages of “we all die” and “darkness prevails” were found scrawled on a flag and exterior wall. Deputies increased their patrols and presence at the school this week,

according to Jimmy Lee of the Office of the Sheriff. But it was an independent security company that spotted the youth on the roof early Wednesday morning and contacted the sheriff’s office, leading to the apprehension and arrest of the teenager. MacLennan said the boy’s confession was a credible one as he was able to point out other graffiti he had written during his second nocturnal visit to the campus. BUSD Superintendent Debbie Gold came under fire this week from parents who cited a lack of communication and outreach as both a danger to students and a weakness in leadership. According to reports, there was a time lapse of nearly 24 hours between the discovery of the break-in and notification of the incident to parents. “I didn’t get an email or robocall notification of the incident from the district,” said parent Jennifer Mosso of the initial break-in on Monday morning. “I found out (about the incident) when I got a notification at 4:30 a.m. on Facebook.” Gold said the reason there was no robocall sent was because “it was a school messenger breakdown” that prevented the district from activating the mass-communication voicemail. But Mosso contradicted that, saying she did eventually receive a robocall from the district – it just wasn’t the one she was expecting. “I got a robocall telling me that my daughter was absent from school today,” said Mosso, who kept her kindergartener

her impact wasn’t lost on the community this week. Higgins’ fellow councilmembers, all donning white sunglasses like those that she was rarely seen without, showered her with praise and gifts for a job well done in the esteemed role. “I know sometimes it can be a difficult task, and the phone calls, the emails that we get can be disconcerting or unrelenting and can be a drain,” said City Councilmember Kevin Romick.“But you handled it well and did a good job.” Higgins’ accomplishments in office included maintaining quality law en-

Byron Union School District Superintendent Debbie Gold addresses concerned parents at Discovery Bay Elementary School on Tuesday, Dec. 12. home following the events on campus. “It is ridiculous how Debbie Gold and the principal have handled this … no notification from the school; no ‘let’s get your worries taken care of’ – nothing. This is not going to pass.” An impromptu gathering was held in the school’s auditorium on Tuesday morning, during which time, parents expressed their fears and frustrations to Gold and local deputies. On Wednesday morning, Dec. 13, Gold issued a brief statement via email telling families that the suspect had been caught. She also told The Press in an email Wednesday morning that she would be sending a robocall to families as well. The following is her statement in its entirety:

“Good Morning Everyone, Last night a teenage boy was caught at Discovery Bay Elementary School by security. He admitted that he was the person who went into the school, vandalized it and wrote the notes. Thank you to everyone for your patience. I hope that you will bring your children to school today. Teachers are looking forward to seeing their smiling faces. Please contact me with any concerns or questions.” According to Gold, the boy was cited and has a hearing scheduled. He has since been released into the custody of his parents. – Tony Kukulich contributed to this story. To view a video, visit www.thepress.net/ multimedia To comment, visit www.thepress.net

forcement, encouraging economic development and leading the charge to revitalize downtown. She signed 150 new business licenses in 2017, she said. “There is nothing more important for city staff than to have elected officials who love the community they serve, and if there has ever been a perfect example of loving the community, it was Mayor Sue,” said City Manager Bryan Montgomery. George A. Escutia Jr., a senior district representative for State Sen. Steve Glazer, beamed when he talked about Higgins. “This last year with Mayor Sue, it

has always been a joy for me to come out here,” he said. Higgins appreciated the praise and chose to highlight some of her smaller accomplishments, such as refurbished parks and the new downtown gateway monument. “I am very honored and privileged to serve,” Higgins said. She then took a rare moment for herself, putting on her signature shades and taking a selfie with her back to the council crowd. “I’ve always wanted to do that,” she said. Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD). The most recent deals made this fall were the sale of the 230-acre golf course and his 40-acre home, which he leases back to continue pasturing cattle. All of the acreage will be preserved forever and used by the community. “I’ve been criticized by developers in the past, but I’m a rancher, not a developer,” said Roddy. “I like the idea of this land being preserved forever. There need to be areas where people can get out and enjoy open space, so I felt like preserving it was the right thing to do.” At 80, Roddy said he doesn’t even buy green bananas any-

more, but one plan he made for the future involved turning the homestead into a public museum dedicated to his rodeo history once he and his wife pass – as per the sale agreement made with the EBRPD. Trophies and memorabilia, including everything from numerous buckles to photographs of Roddy with former President Reagan and celebrities, will remain for future generations to observe when they visit. “Kids will be able to come and see the real west out here,” Roddy said.
