Sooners suspend Joe Mixon by Kyl e Szymanski Staff Writ er Former Freedom High School football p layer Joe M ixon has been suspended by the University of Okla homa foo tball team for the upcoming season after he was charged with a misdemeanor co unt of acts resul ting in gross injury, stemming fro m his alleged assault of a 20-year-old woman at a n Oklahoma restaurant last month, the U niversity of Oklahoma announced in a statement this week. "As the university has demonstrated in the past, we are committed to winning the right way," Vice President for A thletics Joe Castiglione a nd head coach Bob Stoops said in a joint statement. "As a n exa mple to others, OU sets the highest possible standards for its stud ent

athletes, coaches and staff." Mixon, who faces up to a year in prison if convicted, pleaded not guilty to the cha rge during his arra ignment in C leveland County District Co urt on Monday. He was booked, but released on his own recognizance with an order to not have any contact with the victim in the case. "As we have maintained from the beginning, it is our belief that Joe reacted instinctively after being racially slurred a nd physically assaulted by a highly intoxicated young woma n a nd her male friend," said M ixon's atto rney Kevin Finlay at t he time the charges were a nnounced last Friday. " We strongly disagree with the series of events as port rayed by Norma n PD. Justice knows no gender bias and we do not believe that Joe's actions were criminal in natu re. "

LIVING HISTORY

Things are cooking at the ECCHS museum There are a lot of people like me who relish the chance to enjoy history you can put your hands on. We sometimes go to a lot of trouble to immerse ourselves in another era, but the fact is you don't always need to go far to d o that. Come Sept. 14, there 's a prime exLIVING ample of that taki ng HISTORY place right here in East County. That's when the East Contra Costa Historical Society will hold its annual barbecue at the House, Byer-Nail RICK ECCHS museum the LEMYRE located on Sellers Avenue. The house was built in 1878 and donated to the ECCHS in 1986. Today it houses an amazing collection of relics, from a shotgun owned by Charles Marsh to farm equipment, fire engines, tools and even an omnibus (wagon) used to ferry passengers to the Byron Hot Springs Resort during its heyday. But although there are hundreds of things at the museum that definitely look their age, don't expect everything to look that way. The house and many of its displays (including the like-new omnibus) have been restored over the years by volunteers whose efforts are remarkable both in the volume and quality of the work they've done.

The recently restored one-room Eden Plains Schoolhouse will be open for tours at the annual ECCHS Community Barbecue on Sept. 14.

Kathy Leighton has been on the ECCHS board longer than she probably cares to adm it. She's witnessed first-hand t he progress that has been made to ensure the history of our area is preserved and made avai lable for locals to learn from and enj oy.

"Things seem to go in cycles," Kathy says. " Some years, there's a lot going on, and others not so much." Right now, she added, the former is true, with dozens of active voluntee rs pitching in - more than she's ever seen before. Doing most of the heavy lifting is

a group of retired folks who call themselves the Breakers. Kathy says they adopted the name because they take a Jot of breaks, but you'd never know it by how much they get done. I stopped by the museum this week and found Breaker Bob Byer hard at work, repairing the museum's picket fence. A member of the Byer family who has donated countless hours to the museum and local schoo ls, Bob said being a Breaker is more than just something to keep busy. " It's mostly the camaraderie with the other guys and doing things the public ca n enjoy," he said. Perhaps the best exa mple of the Breakers' work is the one-room Eden Plains Schoolhouse. Built in 1868 in Knightsen, the building was donated to the ECCHS and moved onto the museum grounds a half-dozen years ago. It's now been fu lly restored and filled with desks, pictures, chalkboards, McGuffey readers and even a coal scuttle like that originally used to fuel the school's potbelly stove. The school fits perfectly into one of the ECCHS' most notable projects, a month-long educational project known as School Days. This year, more than I ,400 local third-graders participated, getting hands-on experience pumping water, washing clothes with a washboard, churning ice cream, excavating a midden see ECCHS page 15

WHO WANTS SUPER-FAST INTERNET? You may have seen some of the signs up around town already. Sonic is coming to Brentwood in spring 2015, and no, not the fast food chain! Sonic is an internet and phone provider, but they are not your normal provider. Their internet cables transfer up to 100 times faster than regular copper and coaxial cable. That's why they are calling it Gigabit Fiber Internet. The good news is that you can get internet and home phone services for only $40 per month. The bad news is that not everyone can get this service. Sonic only wants to focus on those neighborhoods where a lot of people will sign up. To gauge the interest, they have set up a website where you can log your interest, and the neighborhoods with the most responses will get their service first. Some neighborhoods already

---:.·

have the right conduit installed, which will put them at the top of the list. Even if your neighborhood doesn't have it, if enough of your neighbors express interest, Sonic may go ahead and put the conduit in. The website is http://sonic.net/bl. Log in and register your interest, and then pass the link on to your friends and neighbors. By the way, I get nothing from Sonic for this plug. I just thought this was something many of you would be interested in, and it would actually help Brentwood home values if the whole town had this service! LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Pensions aren't the problem Editor: I'm not going to try changing anyone's mind about public employee pensions. Every one is entitled to their opinion. They are not, however, entitled to their own facts. The overriding fact is that the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Board of Directors has done everything permitted by current law to reduce or manage pension costs. We have implemented every part of the Governor's Two-Tier Plan as passed by the legi slature in 2012. Our latest contracts with the employee associations call for each employee to pay 100 percent of their share of pension costs. We are fully participating in, and current with our payments to, the Contra Costa County Employees Retirement Association program to catch up with unfunded liabilities. Our portion of unfunded liabilities remains the same no matter how many current employees we have. We have never had the more outrageous pension spiking provisions of some other districts, and our contributions to CCCERA do not help fund those payments. We are only pooled with CONFIRE, which is a net benefit due to our size. As to the vacation sell-back controversy of the last two years, that is gone fore ver, barring a reversal in an appellate court. Any employee who was going to exercise that right had to retire by a court-imposed deadline last month . Some did so, from CONFIRE and other county departments, but none did from ECCFPD. We have our own program to eliminate unfunded liabilities from Employee Medical by 2018-19, and we are current with that. The fire chief and the board finance committee work continuously with CCCERA to stay abreast of developments, obtain our most favorable rates and accurately integrate them into our fi ve- and tenyear budget projections. Mr. Aliferis of the Contra Costa Taxpayer's Association is well aware of this a s we have been reaching out to them for months and providing them with any information they desired. Given that, his statements made at this month's ECCFPD board meeting were shamefully misleading. Both he and Mr. Bray will acknowledge these facts in private conversation, but have chosen to not do so publicly in any media forum I have seen. Anyo ne who wants something more done about pension costs, your chariot awaits. It's called the Capitol

Corridor. Get on one and go talk to the only people who can change pension law, or sign an initiative petition, or wait to see what happens in the courts. That is your right. But if you want to place the lives, health and property of I 05,000 of us at further risk to make a point, you and I have issues. Stephen Smith Brentwood

Benefit assessment is bogus Editor: I am very disappointed that the ECCFPD is asking for our support for a benefit assessment when they have not addressed their high pension costs. More than half of their budget is needed to pay the pensions of retired firefighters. They cannot continue operating without a change in course. As a property owner, I don't mind an increase in assessments if it is to maintain the necessary staffing levels. But I will not vote for an increase when the majority of the costs is for retired firefighters. Once the ECCFPD has adequately addressed the pension problem, then I will vote for an increase. And I am dismayed that they are blackmailing us into voting for the assessment by planning to temporarily close one station! Bonnie Clawson Brentwood

Stop the tax madness Editor: It seems to me that on a daily basis we are constantly hearing we need to raise taxes to raise funds for this or that. The most recent item is for the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District. The so-called assessment claims the fund s are needed to keep two stations open. When we ask how did this happen in the first place, it appears that we had some personnel that were getting six-figure pensions in retirement even though there weren't funds to cover these kinds of pensions. The problem still exists even today. If we ran a business like the board is running the district, we would be out of business to say the least. It is my belief that until the board learns to operate in a fiscally responsible manner, we are not to give them a penny more. It is time the people who are civil servants remember that they are civil servants. If they want to make a large sala ry or a huge pension, they need to seek it in the private sector. We value our firemen and policemen tremendously because they

have answered their calling. Now our public officials need to run their departments as a business as well. Then when they really need the money, people like us won't have to look at every bond request with suspicion. Nearly 300 people are leaving the state of California per day because they cannot afford to either raise their families here or retire here. The Golden State is quickly becoming the Tarnished State. Scott Sims Oakley

The truth will set you free Editor: This letter is in reference to Rick Lemyre's Living History column. I highly recommend that you read " General Vallejo and the Advent of the Americans" by Alan Rosenus. This book received two awards. One was for Best Biography of the Year, and the second was for Western Writers of America Spur Award. After reading, I think you will change your opinion of John Marsh. John Bidwell called him "one of the most selfish of mortals." He technically was not a doctor either. He only received his Bachelors of Art degree from Harvard, so that does not entitle him to be called doctor. He mistreated and disrespected the Indians and Mexicans who served under him at his homestead. He also disrespected and was dishonest to the host of the time, which was Mexico under General Mariano Vallejo. If we are going to tell history, then let us tell the truth. It has been a longstanding practice to raise one culture while ignoring and suppressing the other. This must end, and for us to become united, we must acknowledge truth. Henry Martinez Pittsburg

Community advocate leaves legacy of love

FAMILY MATTERS BY SILKY SAHNAN , ESQ.

A few words all divorcing parents should share with their kids

by Susannah Meyer Correspondent

When it came to helping others, Mary Katherine Morris knew no bounds. Her devotion to the community and particularly the senior population was a trademark of the popular and much-loved Oakley resident. This weekend, friends, relatives and co-workers will gather to say goodbye to the woman who touched so many lives. Morris, 58, passed away Aug. 12 following complications from surgery. Morris' decades of service included working for Meals on Wheels & Senior Outreach Services in Walnut Creek, first as a volunteer driver and later as a member of the staff, but she continued to volunteer and deliver meals on her days off. " Meals on Wheels is in place to support these seni ors, and I feel privileged to be part of the team," Mary said in a previ-

ous interview. "Mary was a sweet soul who truly cared about the seniors we serve," said Meals on Wheels Program Manager Sharon Fitzgerald . "As a staff member, she was unfailingly committed to helping

Divorce is w1deniably a tumultuous experience for any couple, regardless of how an1icable the dissolution may be. It's easy to get caught up in the roller coaster of emotions, as well as the challenges of navigating the divorce process itself. It is important to remember there are innocent bystanders sitting on the sidelines, watching and listening. Regardless of their age, careful attention must be paid to the children of divorce, minimizing the fallout as they interpret it Here are a few words of advice to offer children that may help guide them through this difficult period and ease their adjustment. 1) It is not your fault. Whether a child is three or 30, it is a natural response to look for reasons why parents divorce. As children search for answers, one place they may look is inward. How children perceive a situation is altogether unpredictable, and may be based on something as seemingly insignificant as a passing glance or an off-the-cuffcomment. 2) There is no wrong way to feel. When adults go through a divorce, emotions run the gamut. The

same holds true for children. Children of all ages need to know that on some days they may feel sad, angry, hurt or even happy about the change in their family's situation. All of these feelings are natural, and may fluctuate throughout the day and over time. 3) There is outside support if you need or want it. As a caveat to the above, if a childs perceptions about divorce become irrational to the point of being self-destructive, it is advisable to seek help from a qualified mental health professional. Even if a child's response is not threatening, turning to an outside party such as a therapist, support group, clergyman, trusted relative or family friend for added support could be beneficial. Help is out there. It is only a matter of asking for it. If you need additional tips and advice on talking to your children. Our office has a lending library with books on how to deal with divorce. Please contact the Law Offices ofSilky Sahnan at 925-276-0789 for further assistance with starting your divorce. - Advertisement

legacy from page 13 whenever the need arose. If there was a need for a driver, regardless of the geographic area, Mary would step up and deliver meals." Her quest to make a difference also lead her to Soroptimist International's Pittsburg chapter where she held several volunteer positions over the years before she transferred to the Delta chapter seven years ago. The Soroptimist mission to globally improve the lives of women and gi rls through mentoring and empowerment called to Mo rris, and she remained devoted and heavily involved until her death - in fact she was recently elected treasurer. "She did an amazing job holding the club together with her financial knowledge. She was a wiz at what she did," said Jan Schults, Soroptimist International of the D elta president. " Mary was a wo nderful woman who would d o anything to help you." While Mary earned her Bachelor 's Degree and had an open-ended professional future, her sister Pamela Long states that she decided ea rly on to " put aside any personal aspirations and be more involved

in the community." Mary gave up the idea of pursuing a more lucrative career to not only stay home and raise her children, but to become a back-up "mom" to the kids in her neighborhood. The Morris household became what Pamela calls "ground zero," the home where all the kids gathered after school for home-made cookies and an extra watchful and caring eye. According to Pamela, " Her life was richer and fuller because of it." To those left behind , Mary bequeathed memories of her sense of humor, her compassion and her engaging laugh. She is survived by her husband Alan Morris, her children Andrew and Amy, her daughter-in-law Corby, her grandchildren Kailey, Faerlene and Theodore, siblings William Long and Pamela Long, and the many friends, co-workers and community members whose lives she touched. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, at II a. m. at St. Martin o f Tours C hurch, 5294 Concord Blvd. in Concord. Next year, long-time local educator Mary Black, organizer of School Days, will expand the program to include fourthgraders, who will spend an entire day in school there, just like their peers of a century ago. You have the chance to experience it all on Sept. 14, along with horsesmithing, spinning demonstrations, tours of the museum and grounds, live music and the traditional tri-tip dinner with all the fixins. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children 6 to 12, and free for those younger than 6. To get yours, send a check made out to ECCHS to P.O. Box 202, Brentwood CA, 94513. Delta boating safety a top priority by Heather Brewer Correspondent

Boaters around the Delta are soaking up the last few weeks of sun in the season, but even though the dog days of summer are winding down, the focus on safety should not. In the Delta, the most commonly seen boating safety mishaps are boat wake and speeding violations, according to Sgt. Paul Beard with Contra Costa County's Office of the Sheriff Marine and Air Support Services. While the numbers of accidents this year are currently fewer than last year, there is also a decrease in the number of boaters out on the Delta. " We are currently sitting at 11 accidents and one fatality this year, compared to 16 accidents and one fatality at the same time last year, but we seem to be experiencing a 10 to 20 percent decrease in the amount of boaters this year," said Beard. "Most of our accidents are vessels (colliding with) submerged and stationary, above-water objects. Too great of speed and improper lookouts seems to be the primary cause." Other issues include irregular lifejackets use and boating while under the influence of alcohol. "The things I see the most when I am out on the water is children not wearing life jackets and people being lax about drinking on boats," said Dennis Park, a

Oakley's Danielle Gifford and son Riley, 1, enjoy an afternoon on the Delta near Discovery Bay. As summer comes to a close, boating safety still remains a necessity.

Discovery Bay resident and local business owner. "Boats are just like cars; you have to have a designated driver. Usually deaths on the water are avoidable, so common sense and following the rules can help prevent those kinds of useless deaths." To stay safe on the Delta, remember to be observant of your surroundings, know boating and navigational laws, keep proper safety equipment close by and

avoid running personal watercrafts like wave runners after dark. "You should be aware of other boaters, swimmers and changing conditions such as the wind, tide and sunlight," said Beard. "Proper preparation is key. Make sure your vessel is in good operating condition and full of fresh fuel. Also, keep a sound device, charged U.S. Coast Guardapproved fire extinguisher, (portable) floatation device and properly fitted personal

floatation devices for all persons aboard." While the dangers of speeding and churning up excessive wake are generally well known, the dangers of riding on the back and sides of boats aren't as well known. These areas of a vessel are particularly dangerous as toxic levels of carbon monoxide can build up anywhere in or around a boat. Death or injury can result from carbon monoxide poisoning, which results when a person breathes in the odorless, colorless gas that can be generated from auxiliary boat equipment like stoves, heaters, refrigerators, generators and hot water heaters, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Some of the places where the dangerous fumes can accumulate include under inadequately ventilated canvas enclosures, near blocked exhaust outlets, in any enclosed space, or over and around the backs and sides of boats as they idle. The gas can remain there even after the engines are turned off, so it is important to never sit, teak surf or hang on the back deck or swim platform of boats while the engines are running. "The Delta is a wonderful place to enjoy," Beard added. "Stay safe and respectful of others while doing so and take care not to pollute or disrupt the sensitive ecological elements." Heritage boys aim to dominate in pool by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

After winning the Bay Valley Athletic League three yea rs in a row, it's easy to predict the Heritage boys water polo team will float to t he top of the sta ndings again in 20 14. But if the Patriots don't wa nt their streak to dry up, they must contend with the loss of II players to grad uation, including seven all-league members. Coming ofT their fourth league championship in five years, the Patriots will rely on a core quartet of returning playe rs a nd a few newcomers as they look to take a step forward this season . Gone is MVP goalkeeper Jake Matthiessen a nd all-league players Da niel Comforti, Ryan Ellis, Brendan Goyette, Austin Conner, Walker Thaning and Daniel Schafer from a squad tha t went undefeated in league p lay last year before getting bounced in the first round of the North Coast Section playoffs by Las Lomas. Returners Matt Bryant (all-league second team in 2014), Jack Strauss, Robert Hunsinger and Cole Zieman are expected to buoy the squad tlus season, said head coach Nick Araujo. Colby Baum will take over for Matthiessen in the cage. Fellow junior varsity standout Jo hn Moore is also expected to ma ke a splash on the va rsity level.

Press fil e photo

Th e loss of MVP goalkeeper Jake Matthiessen w ill be felt by the Patriots water po lo team this season, but Heritage is aga in favorite to w in the league.

" The boys are committed and buying in," Araujo said. "The boys know they a re expected to participate a nd do well." Meanwhile at Freed om, which finished in second place in the BVAL with a record of 15-8 a nd 6-2 in league play, the Falcons will miss the presence of a llleague members Christian Henry, Ca meron Ott-Bales a nd Italo Tapia, but a re

expected to be held up by returners Drew Irwin (all-league first-team in 20 13), Jacob Roede r (all-league second-tea m last yea r) a nd Ch ris Warren (returning allhonorable mention team member). Liberty, which coasted into third place last year with a record of 3-9 a nd 2-8 in league play, will feature a n all-senior squad that must compensate for a

mixture of injuries, ineligibility and players that have moved out of the a rea. Key starters Preston Charles-M errill, Billy Shultz a nd Nathan Reinders won't be available for the Lions this yea r, but a pair of first-team all-league players return in Alec Pastor and Austin Power. Trey Griffen, who split his time between water polo and band, is also expected to return for the Lio ns. "We've only had a few days of p ractice but it looks like we have some potentially good , solid starters to replace those gu ys (Charles-Merrill, Shultz and Reinders)," said Liberty head coach Kurt Roessler. Roessler, who handled coaching the junior varsity and varsity squads by himself last year, expects to get one assistant and possibly one parent volunteer. D eer Va lley limped to a fourt h place finish last year in league play, a nd figures to rely on a cast of newcomers to help them along this season. All-league players Mark Ortlieb a nd Noah Abuda have graduated , but the Wolverines should build a round returning all-league secondteamer Ryan H errington. An tioch, which struggled to a last place finish last year, will look for players to build around fo llowing the graduation of all-league players Jaxson Schuler and Eric Noteboom. Most league squads a re scheduled to open play at the end of the month.

Patriots hope to repeat as tennis champs by Michael Dixon Correspondent

The 20 12 and 20 13 Bay Va lley Athletic League girls tennis seasons have followed similar scripts. While the lineups were far from identical, both seasons ended with t he Heritage Patrio ts atop the league standings. Although the 20 14 season is at its earliest stage, Heritage is a strong favorite to win the league champio nship fo r a third year in a row. The Patriots three d oubles teams will look a lot different in 20 14, as five of the six players have graduated, but five of the six players in the singles lineup are the same. " It would be pretty surprising if it was a nything other than Heritage then Pittsburg one a nd two," said F reedom head coach Steve Amaro. "After that, it's a n open race for the third spot." Pa rt of Heritage's advantage is the dominance o f No. I p layer Courtney Samuda, a junior. She's won the league tournament in each of her first two years at Heritage, going virtually untested thorough the regular season in both years. A season ago, she wrapped up the league title by beating Pittsburg's Ivy Hughes, who is also now a junior and figures to help the Pirates to another strong season.

Aside from Samuda. fellow junior Erika Publico and seniors Stepha nie M itchener, Micah Balingit and Samina Collins all return from the singles lineup for the Pat riots, while senior Da ni Tamura played varsity last yea r on t he doubles side. Freedom's No. I singles player will be senior Sophia Obregon. But perhaps the most important Falcon will be the No. 2 playe1; junior Marisela La res. Samuda is tough fo r a ny team's No. I to beat, but Amaro hopes that La res can be similarly don'llnant at the No. 2 spot, neutralizing the edge at the top. "She's in line to really eq ualize the playing field," Amaro said. " If tha t's the case, then it comes down to what we and the other teams have in motion ." Freedom will also return seniors Georgia Flores, Daphne Torres, MaKenzie GrifTts, Jourdan Eckel and sophomore Bria Eckel. Li berty's team is young, but head coach Priscilla Macksoud is encouraged with the group that she has at the ready. "We have ma ny new a nd inexperienced p layers joining the team," Macksoud said. "It may be a rebuilding year, but there is a lot of potential talent we are looking forward to developing. Overall, see Tennis page 23

Bangkok 101 offers paradise on a plate Step into Bangkok 101 at The Streets of Brentwood and you'll feel as if you've stepped out of Brentwood. The decor at the popular Thai restaurant creates an ambiance entirely unique to far East County. The restaurant was opened by brother-sister duo Kiat Koly and Vara Barry in 2010. Together; they offer some of the most delicious dishes around. "In my native Thailand, we enjoy eating perhaps more than any other people in the world," Koly explained. "To us, the meal is a celebration. At the end of every day, we prepare our big meal." The menu at Bangkok 101 includes traditional dishes such as chicken satay, which features

barbecued herb chicken on skewers, and enticing entrees such as beef with oyster sauce, which comes with steamed broccoli. For those who want a little more kick in their dining experience, try Pad Prik Khing, a green bean curry, or Yum Woon Sen, also known as Glass Noodle Salad, which features a mix of shrimp, ground chicken, lime juice, onions, cashews and green chilies. Bangkok 101, located in The Streets of Brentwood, is open Monday through Thursday from 11 :30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. For more information, call925-513-1065 or visit www.bangkok101-ca.com.

Awakening the body and soul "

by Amy Schra der Corresponde nt Julie Hung, owner of the new Miracle Massage Therapy Center in Brentwood, is on a mission to share the miraculous healing benefits of massage. Unlike other massage studios, Miracle Massage Therapy Center, which opened in April, is a certified Chinese foot and body massage center. Miracle Massage staff uses traditional Chinese methods, similar to acupuncture, to access pressure points across the body to release tension. This is not a one-size fits all massage. Each massage is customized to meet each person's needs. The results not only relieve physical strains, but also stimulate the body's natural ability to heal itself "The techniques we use not only leave people relaxed, but give their body more energy to heal," Hung said . "If a person is experiencing a specific type of pain or stress, we alleviate it by accessing specific pressure points." In addition to traditional Chinese methods, massage therapists at Miracle Massage are also trained and certified in both deep tissue and hot oil massage. Deep tissue massages relax the muscles under the body's primary layer of muscle to provide relief from stress and a nxiety. Hot oil
