City council votes for ULL special election by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

The Brentwood City Council has unanimously decided that city voters will choose the fate of a proposed urban limit line expansion initiative during a special election in November, rather than holding the vote until 2020. The proposed measure — spearheaded by a group of local developers, including longtime Brentwood farmer and developer Ron Nunn — would move the mark at which urban development must stop, clearing the way for a proposed 815-acre project of up to 2,400 residential units (at least 80% age-restrict-

ed, active adult-specific), with other elements, situated north of Balfour Road, east of Deer Valley Road and west of the Shadow Lakes and Brentwood Hills neighborhoods. The development group qualified the initiative for the ballot by collecting more than the required 3,500 verified resident signatures in support of the changes. “This belongs in the hands of the voters, and if the voters want this, it will pass, and if they don’t want it, it will not pass,” said Brentwood Vice Mayor Joel Bryant. The council’s election-timing decision came after about 90 minutes of impassioned and

Liz Fuller, senior community library manager, has been recognized by Project Second Chance (PSC) for her dedication to bringing the adult literacy program to the Brentwood Library. Fuller received the Anne Cain and Friends Award, named for the Contra Costa County librarian who retired in 2010. PSC staff created the award as a way to pay tribute to Cain’s support for literacy and to the PSC program and to honor others who demonstrate those same values. “Anne Cain was a fabulous director, and I’m honored to get the award that was named for

her,” Fuller said. Project Second Chance is an adult literacy program offered in various locations of the Contra Costa County Library system. Until last year, the program was mainly offered in the western parts of the county, except Pleasant Hill and Antioch. When the Brentwood Library reopened and expanded — from a space of about 6,000 square feet to roughly 20,000 square feet — in late September, Fuller saw an opportunity to bring the program there. “We knew there was a place for them here,” she said. “We worked hard to make it an easy transition.” PSC serves students at least see Fuller page 22

National Night Out in East County by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

National Night Out (NNO) is coming Tuesday, Aug. 6, and East County communities are getting ready to observe the holiday with their neighbors and local police officers. Begun in 1984, the event is a national community building campaign promoting partnerships between police and their communities. The goal is to bring neighbors and their local law enforcement officers closer together in a fun environment. The original event involved 2.5 million people across the country turning on porch lights and sitting in front of their homes. Over 30 years later, more than 38 million people are assembling outside, meeting visiting law enforcement and hosting all kinds of gatherings. In Discovery Bay, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office will be making the rounds of gatherings and block parties, beginning at 5:30 in the evening.

“We will get our officers out, as many as we can, and go through as many streets as we can,” said crime prevention specialist for the sheriff’s office, Tony Fontenot. Each year, Fontenot leads his fellow deputies through the neighborhoods of Discovery Bay, meeting people, handing out sheriff’s badge stickers and sharing food. Many of the residents come together — despite the mid-week date — and plan block parties, hire bounce houses and drag out the grills. In nearby Brentwood, residents are no less enthusiastic about neighborhood spirit. Lt. Walter O’Grodnick of the Brentwood Police Department said his officers will be out to meet the people they are sworn to protect and serve. “Our agency looks forward to participating and promoting National Night Out every year,” O’Grodnick said. “It’s an excellent opportunity for our staff to raise awareness about crime

prevention, listen to concerns impacting neighborhoods and strengthen community partnerships.” He added that officers look forward to visiting neighborhood block parties, barbecues and other social events, and seeing the positive neighborhood spirit throughout the community. To sign up for the sheriff’s deputies to spend a few minutes on your street in Discovery Bay, email Fontenot at afont@so.cccounty.us with an address and brief description of the event. Brentwood residents can request their officers to visit by emailing Community Service Officer Michele Keady at mkeady@brentwoodca.gov. Please include a name, contact phone number and the location of your gathering. Oakley residents can request a city council member or Oakley police officer stop by their gatherings as well. To do so, email officer Marissa Aguilar at aguilar@ci.oakley.ca.us. Please include a contact number and location. To comment, visit www.thepress.net

New Delta tunnel project begins taking shape by Tony Kukulich Staff Writer

Opponents of the twin tunnels breathed a collective sigh of relief in April when Gov. Gavin Newsom put a formal end to the California WaterFix project, but that action also called for the assessment of a single-tunnel project in the Delta. The first major step in that direction took place last week when the Department of Water Resources (DWR) initiated a series of negotiations with public water agencies that participate in the State Water Project (SWP), to amend SWP contracts to accommodate the construction and operation of a single Delta tunnel, referred to as the Delta Conveyance Project. Of the 29 state contractors, five agencies that operate north of the Delta are expected to opt out of participation in the project. “The Department of Water Resources and the State Water Project contractors plan to begin a public process to negotiate proposed amendments to the SWP water supply contracts,” wrote DWR Director Karla Nemeth in a memo announcing the meetings. “The proposed amendments would describe how the costs and benefits of a Delta conveyance facility, including capital costs and operating costs, would be allocated amongst SWP Contractors, as well as other related financial and water management matters.”

Caleen Sisk, tribal chief of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, addressed representatives of the Department of Water Resources and State Water Project (SWP) public water agencies during the first meeting to discuss changes to SWP contracts to accommodate the single-tunnel Delta Conveyance Project in Sacramento.

Critical questions regarding the scope of a new tunnel project have not yet been defined. The path the tunnel would take, its capacity, and the number and location of intakes will have significant impact on the project, its cost and the com-

munities in the tunnel’s path. DWR stated that negotiations will not determine project design. “Essentially, the negotiations are focused on methodology,” wrote Erin Mellon, assistant director for DWR’s public

affairs office, in an email to The Press. “The negotiations are not about project yields, nor are they to shape the project. Rather, they’re about creating a conceptual see Delta page 7

parents to know that they are bringing their children to a dance studio that is committed to having safe practices.

Nina Koch, owner of East County Performing Arts Center (ECPAC), is at the forefront of a push to bring more regulation to dance studios. According to Koch, it requires more paperwork to become a dog groomer than to become a dance teacher, and that simply isn’t acceptable. “It’s important for parents to know that they are bringing their children to a dance studio that is committed to having safe practices,” Koch said. She believes that county, state and national-level regulations, licensing and safety standards are coming to the dance industry in the next decade and wants to be ready when they’re instituted. “I think we are always committed to being the industry leader,” Koch said. “As our industry changes, we want to be in the forefront of that change, so then when the time comes for licensing to actually be official, we are already in front of the curve and we have already done our due diligence to have everything above board.” Koch is asking that all her teachers be background checked and certified through Youth Protection Advocates in Dance (YPAD), a nonprofit organization founded to help end the exploitation of children in dance. In addition, they must be certified in first aid and CPR and have

Delta from page 5 approach to cost allocation and the related financial and water management matters. As you know, Governor Newsom has directed DWR to pursue a single-tunnel solution to modernized conveyance in the Delta. This requires new operational and environmental analysis. The state will build on the work done over the last decade.” Michael Brodsky, legal council for Save the California Delta Alliance, questions the timing of SWP contract negotiations, stating that meetings of this nature are more appropriate after the submission of the notice of preparation (NOP). The NOP describes the project scope and provides direction for the completion of an environmental impact report (EIR) — a key step in moving the project forward. “That notice of preparation is going to contain a very carefully worked on and very carefully lawyered description of what the project is,” said Brodsky. “That, in turn, limits the range of alternatives that can be considered in the EIR process. This whole series of meetings with the water contractors and DWR, without really any meaningful public input, is putting the cart on the top of the horse. I wouldn’t even say it’s putting the cart before the horse. It can’t go anywhere.” Before it was canceled, the California WaterFix project planned for three newly constructed intakes, each with a capacity to draw water at a rate of 3,000 cubic feet per second (cfs). Located just south of Sacramento, the intakes would have taken water from the Sacramento River, and channeled it more than 30 miles south to the Clifton Court Forebay near Tracy, through two tunnels, each measuring 40 feet in diameter and buried 150 feet below ground. From that point, the water would have entered the existing Central Valley Project and State Water Project distribution networks, and then delivered throughout the Central Valley and Southern California. The price tag for construction of the twin tunnels was estimated at nearly $20 billion and the construction timeline stretched for more than 13 years, according to DWR. DWR states on a Delta Conveyance Project question and answer page on their website that the new project will have less capacity than WaterFix and will cost significantly less than WaterFix, but neither of those projections are specifically quantified. In a prior interview with The Press, Jeffrey Kightlinger, general manager for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), said any project that delivers less than half of Wa-

terfix’s projected 9,000 cfs capacity would likely not be a viable investment for his organization. As MWD previously committed to funding approximately 65% of WaterFix’s cost, it is reasonable to assume that DWR will want the project to deliver enough capacity to hold MWD’s interest. Brodsky believes the Delta Conveyance Project will follow the same alignment as the twin tunnels and, as such, will do nothing to alleviate the myriad concerns regarding a decade and a half of construction in and around historic Delta communities. “They started doing geological testing and boring out in the Delta along the exact same route as the twin tunnels,” said Brodsky. “That also assumes you’re going to have the intakes in the same place. All of our experience so far is that it just doesn’t work to have those intakes there, and it just doesn’t work to have a tunnel in the center of the Delta. All of the construction impacts and recreation impact and barge traffic — all of that comes with that route through the center of Delta. In my opinion, one tunnel is one tunnel too many. But if you’re seriously going to look at a tunnel and consider what the governor says about considering the impact to the Delta communities, you need to look at a route around the edge of the Delta, over by Highway 5.” Newsom issued an executive order on April 29 establishing the water resilience portfolio, and directing his administration to inventory and assess a wide range of water-related challenges and solutions, including a single-tunnel Delta conveyance plan, climate change and accessibility to safe drinking water. “The governor directed the Natural Resources Agency to inventory and assess efforts to modernize Delta conveyance,” said Deirdre Des Jardin, principal with California Water Research. “Everybody was hoping that they would look at it closely and determine whether this project was really needed. The Natural Resources Agency is delegating to the Department of Water Resources the inventory assessment. DWR is just like, ‘we’re doing a single tunnel project.’” A calendar of the remaining negotiating sessions can be found here: bit.ly/ thepress_DWR. SELLING DUE TO DIVORCE

There is a big difference in how to handle selling a house during a divorce depending on the status of the divorce. If a couple is separating temporarily or in the early stages of a divorce and no divorce court order has been issued, then everything is pretty much negotiable between the two parties (with advice from their respective attorneys). This means deciding what is worth fixing up, who pays for those items, picking which real estate agent to use, setting the price, how to split up the proceeds, etc. However, once a judge signs an order regarding any of those topics, then those instructions are to be followed. If one party would prefer to retain the property, they are often given a set amount of time to buy the other party out for their portion (based on an appraised value) or the home needs to be put up for sale. Deciding how to split up the proceeds can be tricky if a court order hasn’t been issued. Sometimes, both parties agree to split the proceeds exactly 50/50. Other

times, one party believes they should get a larger share. As long as both parties give the same written instructions to the title company, the proceeds can be split however they want. But neither the agent nor the title company has any say or influence in how the funds are split up. If an agreement can’t be reached by the time of the scheduled close of escrow, there is another option that will allow the escrow to close and decide on the division of funds later. The proceeds can be deposited into a special account that neither party can withdraw from without mutual consent. Sometimes I’ll see where both parties get some proceeds at closing, and then the disputed funds are put into this other account to be resolved later. I AM NOT AN ATTORNEY. SEEK LEGAL ADVICE. Tips, tricks for purchasing hearing aids Many seniors experience some sort of hearing loss as they get older. It affects not only the one suffering from the diminished capacity, but also those around them. It truly is a difficult juggling act on how loud to speak when your ears are “out” versus when they are Senior orner “in” and turned up. Background noise adds insult to injury when it comes to dining out or other activities where there is competing interference with regular conversation. Marla Several types go Luckhardt inside the ear and, after several hours, will start to irritate and cause discomfort and may even lead to infections. Cleaning them regularly can deter that, but if you have never had hearing aids in your ears all day, it is hard to imagine. My mom wore them, and so does my husband, and I see the issues involved firsthand. I can only compare it to the earplugs they give you on an airplane. After the movie, I am more than happy to take them out of my ears. Hearing aids are fitted, but can still cause that discomfort after many hours. Medicare does not pay for hearing aids, although there are a few supplemental plans that pay a small amount of the cost. None cover the total expense, which leave many seniors on a fixed income at a loss. There are a ton of options and prices to research, which is what I did for this piece. I have never had to wear them myself; going through the steps with Mom and Grandpa has given me some insight, but not enough. Off to the internet I go! An excellent site is www.seniorliving. org, which shares lots of good information

in regards to top hearing aid brands based on different elements such as warranty, cost and performance. Read through their comments, and it may help you with this important decision. Go to the site and then search “hearing aids.” How do you know if you will benefit from hearing aids? The first step is to get a hearing test. Most places offer a free evaluation of your hearing. Even Costco does a free test by appointment. You should never have to pay for this exam. When going for your test, make sure your ears are clear of any wax buildup, even if you need to get them flushed by a doctor. Do not try to do this yourself, as you can damage the eardrum. As Mom always said, “Never put anything in your ear other than your elbow.” Once it is determined you could benefit from hearing aids, do your due diligence in shopping for the product that suits your needs at the best possible price. Call your insurance provider to see if any portion of the aids are covered. The more reputable hearing aid companies have a grace period of at least 30 to 60 days to try them out and make sure you are happy with them.

C

Some are smaller and more comfortable, and if they are the kind that fit inside the ear, they must be molded to fit and may take a while to get. After they are done and fitted, you will be asked to walk around either the store or outside to see how they sound. Hearing aids will not bring back your normal hearing, but they will clear and amplify sounds so you can hear better. Don’t be afraid to say they are not for you for any reason. If the fit is not right but the sound is acceptable, they will redo them so they fit perfectly or darn close. Check on the warranty and other options, such as connecting to headphones, the television or Bluetooth for your phone. The big companies tend to have more customer service options, so if you are in another town or state on vacation, you can get yours serviced or pick up extra batteries if needed. Ask if the aids you choose are rechargeable or if they need batteries. Tell the person giving you the test if you have tinnitus, which is the constant humming or ringing in the ear. Some aids are better for this type of hearing problem than others. Price is a factor, but be prudent with your choice. If it’s just an amplifier, but not

specific to your tones and volume needed, they can be more affordable, but may not help your type of hearing loss. If you try this route, make sure they are returnable if they don’t do the job. Ask about payment plans if the total cost is outside of your normal budget. Some companies will sell only pairs, as opposed to selling single units, for those who don’t need both. Add that to your questions, if it applies. Never be forced to buy a pair if you only need one, since they are priced per unit, and don’t feel you have to buy the first pair you try. This high-ticket item should be fully investigated for the best price and options available. With all the new technology, some units have too many options some seniors just don’t use or need. I’m really sad this is not something seniors can get easily and also afford without breaking the bank. Unfortunately, it’s all about the Benjamins, like everything else. Read, read and read some more, but try to find some that will help, so you can hear and communicate with loved ones. Foundation seeks to close school funding gap by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

United by a concern for both local students and their own property values, parents from the Byron Union School District (BUSD) have banded together to form the Byron Partners in Education (BPiE) Foundation. This 501(c)(3) nonprofit is focused on raising money from the general community for the three schools of the Byron district: Discovery Bay Elementary, Timber Point Elementary and Excelsior Middle School. The board members hope their funds will help minimize future budget cuts that impact the quality of education the community’s children receive. “Last year, I was part of a budget committee ... we talked a lot about what cuts we could make to keep the schools from going under state (control), and after a while, there was nothing else we could cut,” said BPiE President and Founder Jennifer Dahl. “So we began looking at how we could raise money.” Dahl took the idea and ran with it, setting up the nonprofit and organizing a board of eight members. Joe Le Bel, whose two young daughters attend Timber Point, signed on as secretary. “A successful education program is what attracts young families to communities,” said Le Bel, noting that one of the first things prospective home buyers do on Zillow is swipe down to see the local

schools’ scores. Le Bel and the other members of the BPiE board firmly believe that, in addition to boosting students’ educational experience, they will improve their community at large by improving school scores. “We are really trying to bring more STEM projects back into the schools, because those are the first things that get cut,” Le Bel added. “We are also making it clear that we are working hand-in-hand with the PTA, not competing against them and their fundraising efforts and event schedules.” While the PTAs at the three schools generally raise money exclusively from student families, BPiE intends to target the entire area, asking residents to consider the values of their homes, while pointing out the latter’s connection to local schools and the community as a whole. The goal is to close the gap between district funding and what the PTA can raise. Dahl is also looking at corporate sponsorships and donationmatching programs to bring in funds.

“The idea is to raise enough money to have the ability to impact the current school year,” Dahl said. “We will get all the money into one big pool and then I will meet with the principals, and the schools will be able to write grants against the money.” BPiE is off to a strong start and has planned their first fundraising event — a casino night — for September at Brentwood Veterans Hall. “I think it’s good to have the event in Brentwood, because all these kids will get funneled into the Liberty district eventually, and we are really trying to tear down the walls between the school districts and get more community involvement for the education of the students,” said Le Bel. “That’s really the goal of BPiE.” While the district itself has not been instrumental in the organizational process, new BUSD Superintendent, Dr. Reyes Gauna, is grateful to Dahl and her fellow board members for their efforts. “I’m always going to be excited when an organization

Letters

to the

Trump must be stopped

City: ________________________________ Zip _________________

Editor: The Trump boosters’ letters as to why they continue to support him show the usual casual relationship with truth and logic that often causes difficulty in these discussions. For example, one letter writer noted: “Under the Trump watch, the USA has become the dominant energy player,” and, “the destruction of ISIS was a great military achievement under President Trump…” implying (incorrectly) that Trump was solely responsible for these events. U.S. energy dominance is the result of disparate factors, all in place before Trump took office. U.S. oil production doubled from 2008 to 2014 when active rig counts peaked that December. At that time, the Russian-OPEC cartel tried to bankrupt the burgeoning shale industry in the U.S. by artificially depressing prices. That effort failed in 2016 and total production then exploded into our present dominance. As for ISIS, let us recall Mr. Trump noting in 2015 and 2016, “I know more than the generals about ISIS…” and “We’re going to defeat ISIS very, very quickly…” Upon election, instead of implementing a “plan,” Trump asked the military to submit a proposal for action. The general’s opinion? Give the military the freedom to operate with less oversight from Washington. In short: Trump, keep out of the way. About 70% of the munitions expended during the multinational effort to militarily defeat ISIS were deployed in the three years before Trump took office. It then took two more years for the military defeat to be complete. So much for “very quickly.” Giving Trump sole credit for these events is not logically sound and akin to crediting the victory over Japan in September 1945 to Harry Truman, who became president in April of that same year.

More important are the reasons for opposing Trump. His dishonesty and criminality are obvious to anyone who wishes to use critical analysis. He is an unindicted co-conspirator (his fellow conspirator is in jail), and the highlythought-of independent counsel has stated his report did not exonerate Trump, who he felt could be charged with numerous felony counts of obstruction of justice were he not president. These are just the tip of the dirty “iceberg” of his illegal activities. Additionally, he has taken the presidency to new lows with his outrageous behavior, incompetence, adolescent bullying and dangerous pandering to Putin and other dictators. Stopping his continued destruction of our democracy must be every patriotic American’s first priority over the next 14 months. Doug McClelland Brentwood

Trump a racist?

Editor: This is in response to the letter from Kevin Cunningham in the July 26 edition of the Brentwood Press. I find it interesting that folks like Kevin who dislike Trump or political opinions different from theirs are called racist. It is a term that is used very often these days by intolerant people who cannot accept the fact that others may not believe the way they do. Cunningham states in his article, “There is no doubt among reasonable, moral, intelligent people that Trump is a racist.” By this statement he is saying that anyone who does not agree with him is not a reasonable, moral or intelligent person. How ridiculous! He no doubt gets all of his news from CNN or one of the other ultra liberal news media. The fact is that regardless of what one thinks of Trump as a person, he is not a racist. He and his administration have done more for minorities than any recent president or administration. For example, check out the employment rate for minorities. It is the best since our country started keeping track of these statistics. Because Trump is trying to stem the flow of illegal immigrants invading our borders, he is called a racist. The “Never Trumpers” will never give up their hatred of Trump, but they may have to endure him for another term. I voted for Trump because I felt that he was the best of two evils, and I’ll vote for him again for the same reason. Plus, like other “deplorables,” I think that although he is not presidential, he is doing a good job for America. Gordon Lyster Brentwood

Former Heritage star swims in national meet by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

Former Heritage High School and Arizona State University swimmer, Daniel Comforti, has refined his physical and mental approach in the pool after a personally disappointing U.S. National Swimming Championship performance last year. Now he’s ready to put that training to the test. Comforti, 22, will compete in the 200-meter individual medley and 100and 200-meter breaststroke events at the U.S. National Swimming Championship at Stanford University in Palo Alto, which began Wednesday. “I have some pretty lofty goals in mind I hope to hit, if not come close to,” said Comforti. “I have been working my tail off this summer and am pretty excited for what I can do. Last summer it was pretty disappointing, from a personal standpoint.” Comforti finished 18th in the 200-meter individual medley, 26th in the 100-meter breaststroke and 39th in the 200-meter breaststroke at last year’s event, but he enters the 2019 competition looking to prove that he’s a changed competitor. He’ll enter the 200-meter individual medley seeded 16th out of 100 competitors, and 44th out of 95 competitors in the 100- and 200-meter breaststroke events. His individual medley qualifying time (2:02.10) is just a few seconds behind top

Former Heritage standout swimmer Daniel Comforti will compete in the 200-meter individual medley and 100- and 200-meter breaststroke events at the U.S. National Swimming Championship at Stanford University in Palo Alto this week qualifier Abrahm DeVine (1:57.41); his 100-meter breaststroke time (1:02.49) is a few ticks off of top seed Devon Nowicki’s 59.48; and his 200-meter breaststroke time (2:16.31) trails number-one seed Daniel Roy’s 2:09.50. U.S. National Team spots are awarded to swimmers with the top-six times in each event for the year — meaning that swimmers are looking to finish in the top six or top eight at the National Swimming Championship to position themselves for contention forthe squad, Comforti said.

Heading into the event, Comforti says he’s not so focused on the leaderboard as he is on improving his times and floating into the race finals. He’s been perfecting his stroke and improving his physical and mental strength as a return member of the Brentwood SeaWolves club team after graduating from Arizona State earlier this year. “It’s been awesome to watch him grow and achieve through whatever adversity came his way,” said Danny Com-

forti, Daniel’s father. “He is proof that, with hard work and perseverance, you can accomplish anything you want.” If Daniel succeeds at the U.S. National Swimming Championship, he’ll add to an already impressive swimming resume that includes a slew of notable high school and college achievements. He was an eight-time All-American as a four-year member of the Patriots swim team, breaking the school records for the 100-meter breaststroke and 200-meter individual medley, and finishing fourth in both those events at the 2015 state high school swimming championships. He went on to stand out at Arizona State, earning U.S. National Swimming Championship qualifying times three out of four years. He qualified for the NCAA Championships his junior campaign as one of the nation’s 30 best Division I swimmers, and he helped the once-struggling Sun Devils swim team rise to become the nation’s seventh best, also in his junior season. But Daniel feels his work in the pool is far from finished. He’s been steadily improving his times each year and has lofty goals on the horizon. He hopes to qualify and then make a splash at next summer’s Olympic trials. However, he must first show that his training has paid off at the U.S. National Swimming Championship. “I am about as ready as I can be,” he said. “It’s all about working on the details now — every little aspect of my swim — and making sure I am on point and staying focused.”

Special needs tennis camp unites community by Jesus Cano Correspondent

Oakley’s Freedom High School Assistant Principal Steve Amaro has participated in 20 years of tennis camps, but a recent camp was one of his all-time favorites. With the help of Freedom class of 2014 alumna Monique Paris, the Freedom tennis program invited special needs students from the Liberty Union High School District to participate in a one-day tennis camp. Thirty students from Freedom, Liberty and Heritage took to the tennis courts as part of the extended school year program. Members of the current program, alumni and members of the Freedom community gathered to help this one-of-kind cause. Amaro served as the athletic director and tennis coach at Freedom High School prior to being named assistant principal. Paris, a special education teacher at Laurel Elementary, used her experience with tennis and working with special needs students to plan this event.

A host of Liberty Union High School District special needs tennis players recently took part in a unique camp at Freedom High School in Oakley. For both of them, it was the first time running a tennis camp with special needs students. “It was a culmination of everything,”

said Paris. “Getting to be out there with the kids, being a special education teacher and having all this coaching experience, and, of course, giving back to the place

where it all started.” Students at the camp worked in groups and were taught the fundamentals of tennis, like forehand and backhand strokes, along with volleys and serves. And by the smiles on their faces, it all went according to plan. “It went really well,” said Paris. “The kids had fun, which was most important.” Equally important, the students were able to develop socially, something that goes beyond the tennis court. “They got exposure to a new sport and it gave them new perspective,” said Paris. “They got out on the court and met some peers, while also getting involved on campus.” Tennis can often get lost in the shuffle with other big sports like football and baseball, taking place during the summer, but for Amaro it’s a sport that brings a lot of people together. “Some of my best memories are because of tennis,” Amaro said. “Like soccer, tennis is a universal game that breaks down social boundaries and allows students to engage in physical activity and have fun.”

Footwork, footwork C

be extended for initial leverage to that side — about 5 to 10 pounds or so, but still not enough. After the ball has reached the high point of the backswing, it starts the downswing, and we need to clear a path to retain a pendulum swing, so we kick the right leg to our left, behind our sliding foot, just as the ball is about halfway to the release point and we remain in balance. If everything is choreographed correctly, we can hold that position on one leg, in balance, all the way to the pins. Doing so is called “posting the shot.” You can watch other players who are out of balance by watching what happens after they release. When you see a player step to the side they deliver from, it’s called “falling off the shot,” and the ball has pulled them to that side. The body’s response from that “falling” is to side step and recover. Get back in balance. Have another player video you and see for yourself. A balanced player is a scoring player, and you’ll see immediate results in your accuracy and consistency. As always, if you see me on the lanes, feel free to ask me questions or take a look at what’s going on in your game or drop me a line. As a professional bowling coach, I give an average of 14 lessons a week, and the most common issue in a player’s game is their footwork. It’s the foundation upon which everything else depends. I know it sounds simple; you take a few Keglers steps and throw the orner ball, right? Easy as walking, right? Well, yes and no. By design, we’re symmetrical animals with a left and a right; two eyes, two arms, two legs and two feet. Even our brain has Duane left and right lobes. Wilson Walking and running are constant exercises in adjustments of balance and recovery. When we play sports, we frequently challenge that equilibrium with something going on to disturb that symmetry and equilibrium. In the case of bowling, we’re adding weight to one side of our body while walking, and in the end, balancing on one foot. We need to offset that imbalance, but how? We have a weight in, say, a right hand, and finish on a left leg, but our right side is now considerably heavier than unladen. We need to get more weight to the opposite side for balance. At the beginning of our approach at the push away, the opposing arm has to

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call, 916-939-0772 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site, www.nationwideposting.com, for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, T.S.# 9508-1907. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bid-

der’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Affinia Default Services, LLC 301 E. this November. Councilmember Claudette Staton said it would save the city money, because the sponsor has indicated it will reimburse the city for the estimated $104,232 to $173,870 in election costs. Councilmember Karen Rarey pointed out that she has heard and received more emails in support than opposition for a special election. Bryant believes the initiative’s fate needs to be turned over to the public, and Mayor Bob Taylor said that city residents have a history of making smart decisions. Rarey also expressed concern the controversy is hurting the community. “We are turning neighbor against neighbor,” she said. “I watch it on social media — people attacking each other, both sides. What do you think it’s going to do in 18 months when people continue to attack each other?” Passionate critics of the special election stressed that waiting until November 2020 would yield a higher voter turnout and allow the citizenry more time to study lengthy public documents chronicling the measure’s possible impacts. “What Blackhawk Nunn is proposing is basically to build their own mini city,” said resident Kathy Griffin, who has spearheaded a community action group opposing the proposal. “You need to send this to the general election so we can analyze all its ramifications.” Fellow project opponent Hayley Currier, a Greenbelt Alliance

representative, noted that the 2016 general election drew 79.8% of Brentwood voters, while a recent special election yielded only a 19.5% turnout. “Placing the election on the general election ballot is the more equitable and democratic choice,” Currier said. A host of special election proponents, however, argued that thousands of residents have already shown they want to vote on the initiative now, and a special election would speed up promised roadway safety improvements and bring much needed community jobs. The planned roadway enhancements include extending American Avenue — which currently terminates in front of Adams Middle School — to form an additional intersection with Balfour Road; widening Balfour Road from near its intersection with American Avenue to the southwestern corner of the project site; and making several safety improvements to Deer Valley Road. Former Brentwood Police Lt. Kevin King affirmed that the improvements need to be made for the community’s safety. “I will stand here tonight and tell you it’s not if, it’s when we have a critical incident at one of those schools, and they are traffic-bound,” King told the council. “The city has lacked the ability to control the development and enhancement of Balfour Road from American Avenue west, shy of this project. This project gives the city the ability to get that crucial issue at least par-

tially resolved.” Brentwood resident Al Del Grande added that the residents who signed in support of the initiative deserve the election to be sooner. “Those people signed the petition to get it on the ballot; they didn’t sign it to wait a year and a half,” he said. Matt Beinke, a member of the development group, said even if Brentwood voters approve changes, the development project would still need to go through a rigorous public planning process. Early plans call for the project to feature about 555 gross acres of residential elements, 225 acres of open space and 20 acres of commercial and civic features, among other amenities. That includes around 1,920 age-restricted, active adult homes, roughly 480 unrestricted to market rate units, multiple recreation centers and possibly an outdoor amphitheater, winery, farmto-table restaurant and bar, and a likely 225 estimated acres of permanent agricultural and open-space lands, including vineyards and olive groves. “If the vote is a no, then we are done, we’ll go away,” Beinke said. “If we vote yes, then we start the planning process.” For more information on the project, visit www. vineyardsatdeercreek.org. Volunteers needed for Meals on Wheels Meals on Wheels Diablo Region is in dire need of delivery volunteers throughout East County, especially in Antioch and Pittsburg. There are over 20 routes in these cities that need to be filled. Potentially hundreds will be impacted if these positions are not filled. East County delivery routes include: Antioch, Pittsburg, Bay Point, Discovery Bay, Brentwood, Oakley and Byron. Pick up is between 10 and 10:30 a.m. at various locations throughout East County. Delivery takes approximately two hours and covers approximately 15 senior homes. Empty containers are then dropped off at the pick-up location. Volunteers will be trained and need to have a clean driving record for the past three years, clear a background check and be able to lift 25 pounds in and out of their car up to 15 times during their route. Mladinich knows it is a big commitment, but she encourages people of all ages to consider tutoring if they can. The success stories from students speak volumes, she said. “You don’t have to be a teacher,” she said. “We have the staff to support you.” PSC’s next tutor training takes place Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 7 and 14,

from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Martinez Library, 777 Arnold Drive. For those who are interested in tutoring but may not be ready to commit, PSC will hold an orientation in the Brentwood Library’s community room Monday, Nov. 18, from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. The orientation will provide additional information and preview trainings in 2020, which will come in April, August and October. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the

lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 758-8052 or visit this Internet Web site www.Xome.com, using the file number assigned to this case 19-22343. LIFE ON THE

WATER’S EDGE OPENING SUMMER 2019

WHERE THE DELTA TAKES YOU

“Even with its close

proximity to the Bay Area, the Delta feels a million miles away from it all.

24

A new boating life is luring water-lovers to the great California waterway. Delta Coves,

set on a private lagoon and marina on Bethel lsland, is a new club community that will be home to 500 waterfront residences, each with their own private boat dock and just

minutes from 1,000 miles of fastwater fun.

Delta Coves residents enjoy the best of both worlds: the close-knit, water-centric

community of Bethel Island and close proximity to the San Francisco Bay. The hub of daily life at Delta Coves is the Island Camp Club, a private social and recreational facility with

a swimming pool, fitness center and spa, family games and more. It’s the place to go for a morning workout or an afternoon swim with the kids, and to gather with friends and family for happy hour, a fish fry and a game of bocce ball at day’s end. Explore the water’s edge and beyond.
