Residents weigh in on tunnel plan by Tony Kukulich

February 28, 2020

Celebrating 90 Years

Staff Writer

A rally before the start of the Department of Water Resources’(DWR) public scoping meeting for the Delta Conveyance Project (DCP) set the tone for the event — residents of East County were in no mood to consider another tunnel project in the Delta. Held Thursday, Feb. 20, the Brentwood Community Center’s upstairs conference room was filled beyond capacity, and many attendees stood along the walls and spilled out into the hallway. “First of all, (DWR) had better have larger meeting rooms if they come to the South Delta, because we have so many people that are so concerned about this project,” said Jan McCleery, former Save the Califorsee Tunnel page 22

Save the California Delta Alliance organized a rally to oppose the Delta Conveyance Project in advance of a public scoping meeting held by the Department of Water Resources (DWR) in Brentwood, Thursday, Feb. 20. Public comments were unanimously opposed to DWR’s proposed plan to build a tunnel through the Delta to enhance the State Water Project water-delivery capabilities.

Student murals coming to library by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

Brentwood Library visitors’ imaginations are regularly inspired by books. Now a student-created mural aims to elicit a similar reaction. Students at Liberty High School’s Public Art and Design Academy (PADA) recently received the city council’s approval to create a doodle-inspired mandala mural on a library wall. The creation, featuring geometric configurations of different colors and shapes, will cover the entire first-floor staircase wall — including above and along the sides of the orange alcove study area — form-

ing an imagination-sparking piece. The city’s public-art acquisition fund, comprised of development fees collected for the acquisition and construction of public art, will cover the project’s $4,819 cost. “We want to create something that will catch the viewer’s eye and give the viewer a chance to let their mind wander,” said Liberty senior Leah Carrasco, a member of the high school’s

academy for students interested in pursuing visual arts. The young artists, who had to get their project approved by the Art Commission and City Council, explored several doodle designs before deciding on mandalas — known for removing irritating thoughts and allowing the creative mind to run free and relax — to craft their future creation, Leah said. A recent preview drew rave reviews from city officials. The

piece is the latest in a series of yearly artistic creations forged through a City of Brentwood and Liberty High School partnership dating back to 2011. “There have been several years that we have had the PADA do this, and every time you say, ‘They won’t be able to top this,’ they bring presentations and set the bar even higher,” said Vice Mayor Joel Bryant. Fellow councilmember Claudette Staton pointed out that she enjoyed the color scheme, which will feature bright pink, yellow, red, purple, blue, green and orange to compliment nearby colors. “I really like this,” she said.

Liberty FFA chapter celebrates 90 years by Aly Brown Staff Writer

In honor of both National FFA Week and the upcoming celebration of a 90-year anniversary, Brentwood members are encouraging their local community to get involved and support the program. Liberty High School holds the last Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter in all of Contra Costa County, offering automatic membership to those students who enroll in the agricultural elective. But even as the last of its kind in the area, the program itself is growing in capacity, bringing in students — many who have never set foot on a farm — and teaching them fundamentals of ag science and business, in addition to giving them conference, public speaking and fair experiences. “We’re in a growing phase right now, which is really cool,” said Liberty FFA teacher Nina Ferretti, who noted the program has grown to include two teachers (herself and Angie Bottarini). Student leadership members, Sarah McGary, Colton Huelsmann and Jared de Fremery have all participated in Liberty’s FFA each year of high school. As they wrap up their senior year, they all agreed the program has added value to their lives. “I think the reason it’s growing is because of the reputation that the FFA has,” said de Fremery, whose farming family first founded the Brentwood FFA. “For career readiness, there’s no other pathway that truly gears kids toward the workforce and gives them the skills to be successful.” Ferretti expanded on the three-ring model for FFA, including: agricultural education in a classroom setting; youth leadership; and a supervised ag experience (SAE) project, which the students work on all year in their chosen area of interest. By the end of the school year, students completing SAE projects will have either conducted a selfstudy, working with animals or agriculture;

The Liberty Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter members celebrated National FFA Week on campus this week, getting students involved in agriculture with related activities. The Liberty chapter is also ramping up for a 90-year anniversary banquet this May. taken on a work-study experience, shadowing professionals in the industry; or completed an agri-science project, similar to a science project with an ag focus. “FFA has prepared me for life,” said McGary, whose SAE is a breeding project, selling young animals to other FFA and 4-H students, who then go on to show at fair. “I now know how to speak in public. I’m able to speak to people, and I actually want to be an ag teacher, so this was a good opportunity for me.” In celebration of National FFA Week, Feb. 22-29, the student members of Liberty High School’s FFA chapter have been hard at work getting fellow students more involved with agriculture. Through hands-on activities held on the quad during lunch and after-school, they’ve connected each game — egg relay races, horseshoe tosses and cornhole, among others — to agriculture, in hopes of generating more interest.

The chapter is also in constant fundraising mode, hosting barbecues where customers can receive food pickups. They’ve been selling squares for cow chip bingo, a game wherein the lucky winner’s square is the one on which

the cow relieves itself. Donkey basketball is slated for March 3, at 7 p.m., in the old Liberty gym. And they also hope to launch a Kiss the Pig fundraiser, which encourages students to raise money in a jar in their teachers’ classrooms. The teacher with the most funds raised will have to kiss a farm animal. But to celebrate 90 years as a chapter, the FFA members are putting together a special banquet event, set to take place in May at the Brentwood Community Center. They hope to get former FFA members to attend and hang their coats on the chair backs in display of that ongoing legacy. In the coming years, Ferretti hopes to continue improving the Liberty campus farm to make it easier for students to work. And her personal goal is to improve agricultural literacy in the East County area and provide the community with a better understanding of what FFA is and what it can do for kids. “Once FFA touches you, it never leaves you,” said Ferretti, who was also once an FFA student. “It’s part of you forever.” For more information on the Liberty FFA and upcoming events, visit bit. ly/2T2o0W7. Puppy love In 1961, our family moved from an apartment in Brooklyn to a single-family home on Long Island, and that was when my parents said we could get a dog! Our furry friends were family to us and great companions. Schweppes, whose beard reminded my Senior dad of Commander orner Whitehead from the Schweppes Tonic commercials, was a magnificent miniature schnauzer with streaks of silver and grey throughout her coat and the whitest of facial whiskers and leg fur. Marla Her sweet demeanor Luckhardt was perfect for this young girl, who loved to play dress up with her and cuddle her like a baby. That dog’s patience and sweetness never wavered. When Schweppes had puppies, I was at my grandparents’ and calling every few minutes to see if another pup was born. Five beautiful little girls entered the world on Labor Day. In just a moment or two after seeing them, I got to select a pup to keep, making Samantha, aka Sammie, the perfect addition for her mother and for us. Like Schweppes, Sammie was a wonderful dog, and both mother and daughter lived long and happy lives in our home. Grandpa and I worked long hours for many years, and we now travel a bit more during retirement, so it seemed very unfair to have a dog that would be by itself all day. We probably will adopt later on, but for now, we enjoy our grand-doggies as often as possible. There is nothing like the greeting from a dog who is thrilled to see you. With owning a dog, or any other pet, comes responsibility. It is just common sense mixed with basic consideration for both the animal and people who come in contact with

C

them to control your animal’s behavior the best you can. When I meet someone with a dog in my neighborhood, I ask if the dog is friendly before I approach for a dose of puppy time. So far, I have been lucky to meet the nicest dogs — and people, too — on my walks. There are, however, some folks who ignore the basic courtesy of owning a dog. One of my ‘pet’ peeves is when a dog owner allows their animal to bark all day while they are gone. Many people are quite courteous and quiet the pooch after a few minutes, as all dogs bark sometimes, but there are others who tune it out, disregarding the annoyance to neighbors. If you live in a gated community, there are CC&Rs that stipulate what is acceptable. Here in Summerset, there is no barking before 9 a.m., and no continuous barking or howling for 15 minutes within one hour anytime. If speaking with or writing a letter to a neighbor with a constantly barking dog is futile, you can contact animal control. The Brentwood Police Department contracts for animal services through Contra Costa County Animal Control in Martinez. During business hours, Monday through Friday, you can contact Contra Costa County Animal Control at 925-608-8400. After business hours, you can contact the Brentwood Police through the dispatch center at 925-8097911. The Brentwood Police Department will forward the complaint to Contra Costa Animal Control. You can also visit their website for helpful information at https://bit. ly/2HUYJGS. Hopefully, a conversation will work but if not, there is no reason for either you or the animal to be ignored. I miss my dogs, even to this day so many years later, but I respected my parents for teaching us how to make sure the dogs were well-fed, healthy and happy and that we as owners were considerate of others in hearing distance.

SELLING WITH PETS

If you have pets, below are some tips to help you keep your home in top shape while it’s on the market. Keep all food and water bowels and litter boxes clean and out of sight during a showing. You’ll also have to pay special attention to routinely cleaning any sliding glass doors to the outside as they often get full of smears from wet noses from our furry friends. If you have pets that shed, you need a great vacuum. Here are two options – Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away TruePet Upright Vacuum. This is an upright that can easily convert to a handheld makes it very versatile and really sucks up the pet hair. Another option is the Dyson V8 Animal vacuum. It is cordless with a lot of attachments. Keep lots of lint rollers around for spot clean-ups before a showing. Consider indoor-outdoor rugs in front of all doors to help catch any dirt that comes in from muddy paws. It’s also

good to put them in your pet’s favorite lounge spots like near the table, couch or your desk. If your animal has long hair, consider rugs with a short weave to make it easier to remove hair. If your pet has had an accident here or there, consider a black light to pinpoint the spot so you can eliminate the stain and odor. Urine glows under a black light because it contains phosphorus. While there are a plethora of products that claim to clean up pet urine, one less well-known option is just basic white foam shaving gel. Many home maintenance gurus swear by this trick. Put a liberal amount on and rub it in gently, then let it sit for about 15 minutes then blot with a damp towel. Be sure to try it on a hidden area first to ensure it doesn’t stain your carpet. If you have questions about real estate, call me at (925) 240-MOVE (6683). Voted “Best of Brentwood” multiple times. To search the MLS for free, go to: www.SharpHomesOnline. com. 2015. The program was filmed in the historic Castello Giusso in Vico Equense on the Amalfi Coast. The docu-concert pays homage to the opera legend by taking the audience on a musical journey in Italy, highlighting the life, career and songs that made Caruso an international star. Maestro Placido Domingo collaborated in the program with an intimate interview. The PBS special had over 220 million potential viewers, coupled with a current live touring version. Esposito had his successful debut at San Francisco Opera in June 2015 with the premiere of Marco Tutino’s “Two Women” (an opera adaptation of the 1960s film “La Ciociara” with Sophia Loren, with whom he had the pleasure of sharing the stage in her recent U.S. tour). The New York Times stated that Esposito sang with “airy charm” for his performance of “Ragazzo del Popolo,” while the San Francisco Chronicle described Esposito as “a charismatic and dulcet-toned singer.” All seats for the event are $39. Brentwood student takes home science fair prize by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

When Brentwood sixth-grader JT Scheeper won a recent science fair, he thought it was a joke. But the budding scientist’s talents are real. JT’s work to determine the strongest and most absorbent paper towel brand recently earned him top honors amongst a group of his peers at the fifth Brentwood Classical Conversations Homeschool Student Science Fair. “I was very surprised,” said JT, 12, about his victory. “I thought they were joking.” The eight participants, most of whom are sixth-graders, were tasked with formulating a testable research question, accompanied by a typed research paper and a trifold presentation board, all of which were examined by seven community judges during a formal project showcase event. A homemade paper towel-holding contraption that streamlined JT’s strength and absorbency testing — yielding Bounty as the top tested brand — highlighted his winning combination of work, but show judges also praised his research paper quality, presentation and overall body of work. “I thought it was really neat, because at 12, you usually just grab a paper

towel — you don’t think about different brands,” said program tutor Heather Cannon. For his part, JT said he picked up valuable experiences throughout the scientific journey. He got to spend quality time with his grandfather, who aided in the contraption’s construction, and he learned that it’s important to formulate one’s own conclusions. The endeavor also taught students how to responsibly research, apply the scientific method, cite sources and write an essay. “I learned that you can’t really trust any commercials, because companies have to advertise their products,” JT said. “We have to test for ourselves to see which one is the best.” Cannon said she was proud of all the projects. Others delved into the effects of positive or negative speech on plant growth; taste-testing using different flavors paired with unexpected colors; testing for the temperatures at which different types of pinecones open up; how soda affects your insides; how sugary drinks affect and damage your teeth; testing for which brand of popcorn leaves the fewest kernels; and observing whether earthworms migrate toward the dark or the light. “I was so proud of them,” she said. “Especially with the teacher being at home, you don’t know what they are do-

His teaching career included Downer Junior High and Pinole Valley High School where he was a history and PE teacher and basketball coach. Under Pete’s coaching, the team won the North Coast Sectionals. After he left teaching in 1986, he went to work for Lathrop Construction. Pete then joined Van Pelt Construction in the late ’90s where he worked until his retirement in 2018. Pete, an avid golfer, enjoyed spending time and traveling with his family, betting on his favorite teams, going to March Madness, attending local sport-

ing events and going to the horse races including the Kentucky Derby, which he was able to check off his bucket list. He continued his love of coaching through his children’s sporting activities. Fogelstrom takes reins of Heritage football by Michael Dixon Correspondent

A new era of Heritage High School football has kicked off. The Patriots named Dave Fogelstrom as the school’s head football coach. He replaces Don Sanders, who resigned following the 2019 season. Fogelstrom saw the opportunity to guide the Heritage program as another chance to fulfill the goal that he had in 1992 when he started teaching at Antioch – to make a difference in the lives of students and athletes. “I came to Heritage when it opened to help build the culture of a new school and make it a great place of growth for young people,” Fogelstrom said. “Taking the football job is just an extension of what I have been trying to do my whole career. It’s exciting to build something, plus a ton of work.”

Heritage has named longtime East County coach Dave Fogelstrom as its next head football coach The job ahead of Fogelstrom is certainly not an easy one. The Patriots have generally fielded strong football teams since the school’s inception. The more recent past, though, has brought more of a struggle. In 2019, the Patriots went 2-8 overall and 1-4

in Bay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) play. The year before, they were 1-9 overall and 0-5 against BVAL opponents. Fogelstrom noted that high school football is often fairly cyclical. In order to get Heritage on a good part of the cycle, the job of the coaching staff will be to ensure that the best athletes on campus remain with the Patriots. “With so many kids looking to transfer to wherever they think things will be better, I believe that my coaches and I have to recruit this campus as hard as possible,” he said. “The players also have to help sell the program and get everyone we can out on this team. If we can get the athletes on campus out, we can start to see things improve.” Of course, some of the struggles over the last two seasons can be owed to a strong league. The BVAL has emerged as a powerhouse in recent seasons. For Heritage to be more competitive, Fogelstrom stated that be-

ing in the weight room is essential. “Our kids know what they have to do (to) be competitive,” the coach said. “The absolute necessity of the weight room has been the primary focus so far. We now have five potential sessions a week. Those doors are open. It’s my job to text them, call them, and remind them of this, daily.” With the beginning of football season being months away, only time will tell what will materialize on the field, but the early returns are promising. “I love the energy I am seeing from these guys right now,” Fogelstrom said. “We had 107 guys come to our first meeting, and right now we have 155 kids on the potential roster. The morning weight room sessions have been packed. It’s amazing to see guys show up in the dark to start training before school. It’s encouraging, and the kids are pushing each other to work hard.” To comment, visit www.thepress.net

Basketball games unite Patriots’ community by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

The Heritage community opened their hearts and the school’s doors for unique games of basketball that transcended the court last week. A host of East County schools descended on the Brentwood campus as part of the Special Olympics Partnership program. The Contra Costa County Office of Education and Special Olympics Northern California events immerse students in sports year-round at county school sites, providing inclusive opportunities through soccer, basketball and track and field. Local schools in attendance included Adams Middle School, Antioch, Deer Valley, Heritage and Liberty high schools and members of Liberty Adult Education’s Gateway Program that serves 18 to 22-year old students with disabilities. Basketball was the game of the day, as unbridled joy could be seen and heard emanating from the school’s gym and blacktop amid balls bouncing, rims shaking, nets swaying and players running basket to basket. “I never felt so good in my life,” said one participant. Another remarked, “That’s right soldier, that is how you make a basket,” seconds after a fellow player’s shot floated through the hoop. Those off the court encased the event in a rousing display of love and acceptance. Heritage staff Loren Wortinger, Melissa McCarthy, Janet Hannigan and Jessica Banchier were all key to the event, and the color guard, choir, dance team, cheerleaders and drumline created memorable opening ceremonies. “It’s a great way to bring the school community together,” said Wortinger, a teacher

A host of Heritage students pose prior to a game as part of the Special Olympics Partnership program and coach. As soon as the players took the court, they stole the attention. One participant drew a loud ovation from the gym crowd when his half-court heave swished through the net. “I was so proud of myself,” he said, sipping water during a game break. “That is how you do it, you never give up on your dreams.” Meanwhile, outside on the school’s blacktop, Heritage player Nathan helped his fellow players shine. “My favorite part is helping (teammates) and giving everyone an opportunity to shoot,” he said. Berkeley goalkeeper Leah Freeman collides with Liberty’s Gabby Colmenares while making a save in the North Coast Section quarterfinals.

Liberty girls’ soccer team stung by Yellowjackets by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

The fifth-seed Berkeley High girls’ soccer team knocked off fourth-seed Liberty on penalty kicks in the North Coast Section quarterfinals last weekend. Leah Freeman’s sudden-death stop of Liberty’s Kaelyn Adams shot sent the Yellowjackets into a celebratory frenzy, as Berkeley pulled out the victory (5-4 on penalty kicks) “It’s always tough to lose a game like this on PK’s,” said Liberty head coach Tony Martins. “As long as I have been here, it’s always been a great match with Berkeley…It’s a coachable moment. We have had a lot of success here.” Ruby Hill’s clinching penalty kick shot sailed over Adams head into the back right of

the goal, giving the Yellowjackets an advantage that they wouldn’t relinquish. Freeman dove to her right on Adams’ ensuing midheight attempt, getting both hands on the ball to stop it in its tracks and send Berkeley to the improbable victory. “You always want a little bit more, especially after we have won North Coast,” Martins said. “Unfortunately, it didn’t happen for us.” Jessie Sotelo put the Lions on the board midway through the first half, and the Liberty defense and Adams in goal held Berkeley in check until Berkeley freshman Shima Dixon scored off a throw-in with just over 6 minutes left that appeared to be in Adams’ grasp, but spun around on her fingers and into the back of the net. “It was unfortunate, they put some pressure on us,” Martins said. “We have to make

I know she’ll move on to great things.” The squads played through two mostly uneventful overtimes, before a wild back and fourth shootout ensued. Kaitlin Carlton, Alexis Gutierrez, Sotelo and Jayden King all scored for Liberty in the shootout, but ultimately Freeman’s saves of Hailey Brambley, Adrianna Martins and finally Adams helped Berkeley emerge victorious . Brentwood’s Heritage High School girls’ soccer season ended Saturday after a 4-1 defeat against the No. 1 seeded Carondelet Cougars in the North Coast Section Division 1 playoffs. Though the Patriots will graduate some key players, the core of the team will return next year. “The future is bright for Heritage, so don’t think we’re going away anytime soon,” said head coach Gary LaFleur. “A game like today is tremendously valuable for a lot of our players. I can’t be more proud of our team and our school. Our group is a bunch of winners.” The start of the season wasn’t ideal for the Patriots, going 1-4-1 through its first round of games. After earning a 2-0 victory over Buena High School in Southern California, the season turned around for Heritage. They clinched a first-round home

playoff game, in which they defeated Clayton Valley Charter 3-0. It was the first playoff victory for Heritage since 2015. But Saturday afternoon’s performance was not in the game plan. Carondelet’s Jordyn Young scored five minutes in. Ellie Ospeck chipped the ball in to make 2-0 as the halftime whistle blew, killing any momentum Heritage looked to have in the second half. While Makeila Yancey scored Heritage’s only goal, the Cougars added two more to make it 4-1. Rising stars like Kaya Scoot, Jayden Sanders and Sabrina Rogers will suit up for the Patriots again next winter, but seniors Tory Morfin and Sarah Smith played their last high school game. “I’m beyond proud,” said Smith, who will be playing soccer at Sacramento State next year. “I’m so excited for this team. This season has been our best yet. These girls have a bright future.” To view a video, visit www.thepress.net/ multimedia

Heritage downed by DV Coming off a huge upset of Clayton Valley in the opening round of the North Coast Section playoffs, the Heritage boys’ basketball team wanted to keep its momentum rolling against Deer Valley in the quarterfinals. The Wolverines quickly put the brakes on that idea. Eleventh-seed Deer Valley jumped out to a 14-point lead midway through the second quarter and never looked back in a 62-40 victory over 14-seed Heritage. Deer Valley never trailed after falling behind 2-0 and largely held onto momentum, opening up a 22-point halftime lead while holding Heritage to 10 first-half points. Guard Devin Carson led Deer Valley with 14 points. “You are not going to win many games when you score 10 points in a half,” said Heritage head coach Carly Perales. “It put us behind the eight ball, allowed them to get out

and run. They are a very athletic team.” The Patriots were besieged by early missed shots and turnovers, and the Wolverines pounced, pushing a 6-point first-quarter lead to 22 at halftime and holding a 16-point lead after three — a quarter Heritage actually outscored the Wolverines 20-14. “When you are down that much, you are fighting uphill the whole way,” Perales said. Junior guard Isaiah Hinds led the Patriots with 17 points in defeat, and fellow guard Sebastian Duran added 8. The Patriots end their season 12-16 but are slated to return seven players, including key guards Lamar Murphy and Hinds next season. Deer Valley’s playoff run ended Tuesday night in a 76-45 loss to second-seed Granada. Granada will clash with top-seed De La Salle for the North Coast Section Division 1 title. The date and time of that game was not available as of press time. To view a video and a slideshow, visit www.thepress.net/multimedia

highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. nia Delta Alliance (STCDA) president. “We overfilled the room, and there was standing room only.” Following DWR’s brief overview of the project, more than three dozen tunnel opponents, including Contra Costa County District 3 Supervisor Diane Burgis and City of Oakley Mayor Kevin Romick, waited to have their concerns and questions entered in the public record. Among the most frequently heard concern was that the DCP increases reliance on the Delta as a source of water for Southern California. This position contradicts the Delta Reform Act that requires the state to reduce its reliance on the Delta. A number of speakers noted with frustration that DWR is not examining desalination as an alternative to a tunnel despite significant improvements in technology in recent years. “We are losing a lot of our snowpack because of climate change, and we’re seeing fires,” Burgis said. “We have to invest in projects that actually create water, that create local jobs and that don’t destroy a precious system that is very unique.”

The Brentwood meeting was the seventh of eight planned public sessions that DWR is holding across the state to review the scope of the DCP, and it was the only session planned for East County. Public scoping meetings were scheduled after DWR issued the project’s notice of preparation (NOP) in January of this year. The NOP defines the projects and its objects. It also initiates an environmental impact report for the proposed project, which will determine the project’s compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act, a critical step toward moving the project forward. “I want to highlight that this is the beginning of the process,” said DWR Environmental Program Manager Carrie Buckman. “This is not a decision document. A decision will not be made until the end of the process.” During his allotted three minutes, Michael Brodsky, SCTDA legal counsel, took issue with this statement. “You weren’t telling the truth when you said decisions weren’t made,” Brodsky said. “The notice of preparation defines the range of alternatives. It’s been written to exclude everything except Delta conveyance. So the major decisions have been made before you go to these scoping meetings. But we’re going to insist that you study non-tunnel alternatives.”

The DCP follows in the footsteps of the Peripheral Canal Project, the Bay Delta Conservation Plan (DBCP) and California WaterFix. It is the latest iteration of the state’s plans to draw freshwater from the northern reaches of the Delta and convey it to the Central Valley and Southern California. While BDCP and WaterFix called for a pair of tunnels to accomplish this, DCP would rely on a single tunnel — a change made nearly a year ago at the direction of Gov. Gavin Newsom. The NOP states that the underlying purpose of the DCP is to protect State Water Project (SWP) water deliveries to destinations south of the Delta. It identifies sea-level rise due to climate change, saltwater intrusion and the vulnerability of SWP infrastructure like levees and canals to seismic activity as primary threats to those water deliveries. The Brentwood meeting got off to a contentious start when Brodsky referred to DWR’s project overview as a “pack of lies.” Another attendee asked Buckman to compare the current DCP to the Peripheral Canal Project, an initiative rejected by nearly 68% of voters in 1982. She stated that she was relatively unfamiliar with the history of the Peripheral Canal, a fact that took participants — many of whom demonstrated

an in-depth understanding of the history of DWR’s efforts in the Delta — by surprise. Speaking after the meeting, McCleery shared that frustration. “This plan is the same as WaterFix,” she said. “I didn’t get the feeling that the representatives of DWR really knew what WaterFix was or what the issues were or anything. So that was disappointing.” The full text of the NOP can be found here: www.bit.ly/thepress_tunnel. The final public scoping meeting is scheduled for March 2 in Redding. Public comments on the NOP can be submitted in writing and are due March 20, by 5 p.m. They may be submitted by email at DeltaConveyanceScoping@ water.ca.gov; or by mail at Delta Conveyance Scoping Comments, Attn: Renee Rodriguez, Department of Water Resources, P.O. “Even though this area is under the stairs, visitors of the library will be able to view the mural from many angles,” said Leah. Other PADA-created pieces around town include a mural portraying Brentwood’s transformation through time on the Minnesota Trail Undercrossing at Sand Creek Road; an 80-foot mural at King Park, depicting an underwater scene; painted utility boxes, following a local produce theme; a sunflower mural

that wraps around the corner of Second Street and Brentwood Boulevard; abstract painted murals at the four underpasses along Sand Creek Road and O’Hara Avenue; five mosaic sculptures of animals playing with various sports balls, along the Sunset Athletic Complex walkway; and a mural at Oak Meadow Park. “I think it’s pretty.” Now that the city has approved the funding and design, the students are scheduled to start work as early as March, wrapping up by the end of the school year. The largest mandalas will be painted onto the library wall, with the rest designed on plexiglass circles and affixed with clear standoffs, making the figures appear to float and adding depth to the space.
