Brentwood leaders have teed off with plans to evaluate city regulations regarding closed business buildings. The move is in response to visual and safety concerns that popped up following Deer Ridge Golf Club’s September closure. “What I would like to address is strengthening a code or codes to help us address the state of a building when a business closes its doors,” said Councilmember Karen Rarey, who requested the action that was subsequently approved by council. City officials noted that any forthcoming changes will apply to businesses citywide, not just to the golf club that spurred the action. “This is for the whole of Brentwood,” said Mayor Bob Taylor. “This is not just for Deer Ridge or Shadow Lakes or the Garin area. We need to make sure we put together an iron-clad discussion … If we are going to do it, the mayor is requesting we do it right. We make it equitable throughout the entire community.” Rarey said the golf club exhibits several aesthetic and potential safety issues that warrant a larger, citywide review. With the primary election around the corner, residents of East County will have more to consider than simply choosing their presidential preference. Contra Costa County overlaps into various districts, but the cities located in the eastern portion — Antioch, Brentwood, Discovery Bay and Oakley, along with unincorporated land in between — are part of Congressional District 9, Senatorial District 7, State Assembly District 11 and Supervisorial District 3. Those who reside within these boundaries should study the following candidates and measures prior to Election Day, March 3.

Contra Costa County residents will find it easier to vote in the upcoming Tuesday, March 3, presidential primary election, as the Contra Costa Elections Office and city clerks countywide provide convenient vote-by-mail drop-off locations, prior to and on Election Day. Oakley’s drop-off box is located at city hall, 3231 Main St. Brentwood’s boxes are both located at 150 City Park Way, with an indoor and a drive-thru option. Discovery Bay residents can drop their ballots at the post office, 3345 Bixler Road. Cancer support center debuts in East County “ … everything we do is

A nonprofit entity serving patients with cancer for 30 years will soon celebrate a grand opening at its new Antioch location. Cancer Support Community has offered grief support, exercise classes, nutrition training and more to cancer patients in the Bay Area for three decades, functioning out of its Walnut Creek location. Now, with the opening of its Antioch location at 3505 Lone Tree Way, officials invite the community to help celebrate its opening on Friday, March 13, from 2 to 4 p.m., with refreshments and a meet ‘n’ greet with staff, board members and those Peter Dudley, Cancer Support Community chief development officer, calls community members. “We don’t say we have clients; we say we have community members,” he said. “The people in support groups, all
built around creating that sense of community, of people helping people and people belonging.

cally,” said Cancer Support Community CEO James Bouquin. “It affects us psychologically, financially and socially, increasing stress and feelings of isolation. That’s why we don’t just provide the best therapist-led counseling, educational workshops and exercise classes; we create a community where patients, survivors, caregivers and family members are all welcome and encouraged to participate. And best of all, we do all this entirely free of charge.” To make it free for community members, Dudley noted funding for the organization is derived from individual donations, corporate sponsorships, fundraising events and charitable giving. When it comes to the Antioch location, the mission will be largely the same — to help people live longer and better with cancer — but Dudley shared that Cancer Support Community has recog-
nized the needs in East County are different than the needs in the Lamorinda area. Some of the plans will be tailored to the new location. “We plan on instituting some emergency financial grants to those with cancer,” he said, “and we’re planning on some transportation assistance.” Dudley further stated the volunteers operating the center are bilingual, they live in the community and are either patients, survivors or caregivers of those affected by cancer. “The volunteers are incredibly welcoming,” he added. “Everything we do is centered around making people feel at home.” The celebration will be held at the center, located at 3505 Lone Tree Way in Antioch, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, March 13. Brentwood police arrested three individuals suspected of a theft at Ulta Beauty Store and Salon in The Streets of Brentwood after they struck a Brentwood police cruiser and led police on a chase Monday, Feb. 10. “We responded to Ulta to a theft,” said Sgt. Eric Wernholm of the Brentwood Police Department (BPD). “The suspect vehicle was given. An officer responded to the area, found the suspect vehicle and engaged the suspect vehicle. The vehicle accelerated and collided with our officer.” The three suspects have been identifed as Keilaysha Usher, a 24-year-old woman from Oakland, Talmika Bates, a 24-yearold woman from Hayward, and Ramiah Armstrong, a 22-year-old woman from Richmond. The fourth suspect, Adrian Benton Jr., a 21-year-old man from Richmond, was also taken into custody. Police allege he arrived to pick up the women and help them flee the area. “This situation unfolded very rapidly, and we are very fortunate no innocent bystanders were injured,” said Lt. Walter O’Grodnick of the BPD. The suspects left Ulta heading toward Lone Tree Way in a white Nissan Murano. A BPD officer observed the Murano at the intersection of Shady Willow Lane and Lone Tree Way and attempted to enforce a traffic stop. The driver collided with the patrol car and fled. The officer, who suffered a minor

hand injury as a result of the collision, pursued the suspects. After losing sight of them, he found their car abandoned off Empire Avenue near the J.C. Penney store. “The three suspects inside had taken off on foot, and the vehicle was empty when we located it,” Wernholm said. “We knew, based on the time line, that the suspects were probably in the area.” Officers from the Brentwood, Oakley and Antioch police departments participated in the search for the suspects. Office. At least one suspect was taken into custody with the assistance of a K-9 unit. That suspect was placed under arrest and transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. It is unclear if the injuries were suffered in the collision or during the apprehension. “I have no doubt the coordinated response and teamwork amongst the law enforcement agencies involved proved helpful in successfully apprehending all of the suspects,” O’Grodnick said. The theft is estimated to have netted $10,000 of merchandise. All four subjects were booked into the Martinez Detention Facility. The Contra Costa County Office of the District Attorney is reviewing the case to determine the charges that will be filed. County to explore revising ag land-use policies The Contra Costa Board of Supervisors is growing plans to revise the area’s land-use policies to increase agricultural sustainability and economic vitality. County leaders recently released 18 related recommendations, including a number of new agricultural land-use policy initiatives, which sprouted from a series of public meetings that dug into the county’s agriculture future, current obstacles to a healthier agricultural economy and agritourism opportunities and constraints. “This isn’t perfect, but it’s going in a great direction,” said District 3 Supervisor Diane Burgis, who carried on the endeavor first launched by former District 3 Supervisor Mary Nejedly Piepho in 2016. “I have gotten a lot of feedback from people who participated throughout the whole process that we are going in the right direction.” Just a handful of the proposed county agricultural area recommendations include allowing farm-to-table restaurants; bed and breakfast establishments; short-term rentals; farm stays; and large events. Other suggestions include adding equestrian and bike trails between farms, improving agricultural promotion signage and ramping up efforts to address illegal dumping. The majority of East Contra Costa’s agricultural lands are located east of Brentwood in the county’s designated agricultural core. Other major agricultural areas include the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, Tassajara Valley, Briones, Morgan Territory, Las Trampas and the surrounding plain of East County. The specifics of the proposed regulations are still materializing, but county

Brentwood City Councilmember Karen Rarey expressed support of farmers with small parcels, noting that in the agricultural core, where the majority of agricultural land uses are being proposed, 49% of farms are under 10 acres, and 76% are under 20 acres. “I thought the whole point of making these land-use changes was to help farmers, especially the struggling farmers on smaller parcels, helping them become sustainable by providing them with another revenue source,” she said. Burgis, however, noted that some small parcels are currently being manipulated for nonfarming purposes, something the process should try to avoid. “What we are seeing in East County is an increase in property value, because there are people who are buying these smaller parcels and turning them into what some people call ‘mega mansions,’” she said. “So what we are trying to do is preserve it as farm land. If someone wants to get into farming on those small parcels, that is a great thing. We just don’t want people to buy a piece

officials and agricultural leaders agree that the suggestions are a good first step. “We have come a long way in the past couple of years,” said John Viano, president of the Contra Costa Farm Bureau and chairman of the Contra Costa Winegrowers Association. “A little tweaking, and I think we might have something that we can all appreciate.” Farming advocates noted key sticking points that still needed to be addressed: including the minimum required parcel size for farm-to-table restaurants; the exact placement of buildings to prevent infringement upon agricultural growing operations; and how to prevent urban elements, such as sidewalks, bike lanes and unnecessary traffic lights, from ruining the area’s rural character. The recommendations call for farmto-table restaurants to be on parcels ranging from 10 to 40 acres in addition to other preliminary requirements, such as that 75% of the business’s fruits and vegetables be grown in the county but it must produce at least half from its own land. John Kopchik, the county’s director of conservation and development, said various factors must be weighed in the parcel size requirement, including impact on neighbors; maintaining farm integrity; and stress on ground water and septic systems from increased use. However, a handful of prospective restaurateurs noted that their businesses could only survive on small parcels, such as 10 acres. “Requiring us to have 10 acres and then requiring us to purchase another 30 acres or entering into contracts has no rational basis for the purpose the (board of supervisors) is trying to achieve,” said Barbara Frantz, owner of Tess’ Community Farm Kitchen on Balfour Road, who previously operated a farm-to-table

Celebrating César Chávez Los Medanos College (LMC) is preparing to host its annual César Chávez Celebration, Friday, March 27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., with the reception at 6 p.m., and the awards and recognition ceremony at 7 p.m. LMC is located at 2700 E. Los Medanos College hosts this event each year to honor the life of César Chávez and to recognize East Contra Costa County community leaders who continue his great tradition of service and social activism. A long, long time ago, someone who wanted to apply for a loan to buy a house would contact their local bank or savings and loan. Once the loan was approved, it would stay on that institution’s books. Eventually a “secondary” market grew where another institution would buy that loan and collect the payments going forward. This secondary market has now grown to the point where nearly 2 out of every 3 loans wind up there. It won’t matter which financial institution you apply to, if they plan to sell the loan on the secondary market, the loan won’t be approved unless it meets the minimum requirements to be purchased. But what if your application is deficient in one of the required areas? Maybe your credit score is just below the minimum, or your time on the job is short of what they require. Then you should look into what’s called a “portfolio” loan, meaning that the institution holds it in their portfolio of assets instead of selling it off.

Competing for only the second time, relative newcomer Adam Stewart cleaned up during the BBQ King Cook-Off in Brentwood, an annual competition that benefits the Brentwood Police Activities League (PAL) and the East Contra Historical Society. Held Sunday, Feb. 4, and hosted by Jim Wangeman at Harvest Park Bowl, this year’s event raised more than $7,000. Wangeman called the day a “win-win for everybody,” and attributes the success to both the serious competition and an effort to make sure everyone has fun. “We are thankful for such a great showing from our community,” said event organizer Darin Hassig. “PAL depends on donations to continue to provide a safe and academically based after school program that serves over 900 teens a month. We look forward to having a great turnout for our 2021 BBQ King Cookoff. I would like to thank all of our board members for a great turn out and for all the help they give to put on a successful event.” Attendees had the opportunity to sample the best that each of the event’s 15 competitors had to offer. “I’ve got to say, that every piece I tested was exceptional, and there were quite a few,” said City of Brentwood Councilmember Karen Rarey. “And best of all, the proceeds benefit the Police Activities League and the East Contra Costa Historical Society. Meredith Fitzgerald Nunn
everyone, including their favorite variety of peach or if they preferred nonfat milk in their latte. Meredith was a longtime member of Harvest Time and shared her talents while serving on the board and as president over the years. She also loved contributing to 4-H, FFA, the California State Fair, Contra Costa County Fair and the Brentwood Cornfest. Meredith loved to give back to those around her. She knew just the right ways to share her contagious good cheer. As a member of the Brentwood Lions Club, she especially enjoyed volunteering at Special Kids Day and diabetes fundraisers and supplying whatever was needed. She often gathered toys for underprivileged children, hosted fundraising events at her farm and was a dedicated supporter of schools and students. Sharing her passion for farming came easily to Meredith. With her excellent people skills and knack for connecting, she loved helping visitors from nonfarming areas experience agriculture for the first time. Many knew Meredith liked to drive fast cars; few knew she was a race car driver. Meredith loved to travel and explore new places, and she was a Disneyland enthusiast. A lifelong learner, Meredith graduated from Liberty High School and attended Chapman University. Meredith always brought the fun and was full of surprises. She will be dearly missed by all, including her brother Stan and his wife Kelli. She was an amazing aunt to Jake, Sam and Hailey and was so excited to welcome Sam’s wife Sara and great-nephew Nolan to the family. She will be remembered af-
May 24, 1965 – Feb. 8, 2020 Surrounded by loving family, our beloved Farmer’s Daughter, Meredith Fitzgerald Nunn, passed into eternal rest on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020. Brentwood’s farming community was home to Meredith her entire life, and she will be remembered fondly for many reasons, especially for the establishment and success of The Farmer’s Daughter Produce and U-Pick Farm, which she originated almost four decades ago. As a result of Meredith’s hard work and talents, her iconic red barn was a favorite throughout the Bay Area. Meredith was born on May 24, 1965, to farmer and former Brentwood mayor George Stanley Nunn and Lenore Fitzgerald Nunn. Meredith and George were best friends. She spent much time at his fruit stand, as well as fruit stands owned by her uncles and aunts. Running around with her brother Stan and many cousins made for a rambunctious childhood. Meredith and Stan also spent much time playing with the “4th Street Gang” during a time in Brentwood when everyone knew your name. Energetic, warm-hearted and a friend to all, Meredith made an impact on so many. She employed countless Brentwood locals, young and old, and she had a proven talent for running her successful and beautiful fruit stand. Many local farmers credit Meredith with pioneering value-added agritourism in the area. Coffee lovers remember her corner stand, and Meredith’s memory of her individual customers was impressive. She could recite details about

OBITUARIES Robert (Bob) James Barnett
June 26, 1956 – Jan. 25, 2020 Bob Barnett, 63, passed away in his home after a heart attack on Jan. 25 in Brentwood. Bob was born in Oakland and raised in Livermore, where he graduated from Livermore High School. He later moved to Brentwood, which he called home for many years. He cared about those around him and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He loved cars (especially his Corvette), golfing, dinner with friends and neighbors and enjoying the finer things in life. Bob is survived by his sister, Roxanne Springer of Livermore; twin brother, Bill Barnett of Livermore; sister, Cindy Dee of Bend, Oregon; as well as five nieces and four nephews. June 25, 1929 – Jan. 7, 2020 Betty was born to Ethel Mae (McCormick) and James Theodore Kifer in the farm country of Holland, Missouri. At the age of 10, she lost her mother and then helped in raising her younger siblings, Letha Mae and James Cleveland, as her father tended the farm. They spent time living with her grandparents and many aunts and uncles. During WWII, her father took his children to Brentwood, where he worked as an essential farm worker. She graduated from Liberty High School, in Brentwood, at the age of 16, in 1946. Betty returned for a short stay in Missouri but returned to California, where she married Marion Lawrence (Larry) Miller in 1948. They lived in Richmond and Concord, where they raised their three children, Jerry, Judith and Michael. She was active at Trinity Baptist Church in Concord. She worked in retail sales and real estate. Betty loved the flowers in her garden. She planted a bountiful apricot tree, which provided the fruit from which she made the best

apricot pies throughout the years. When her children were grown, Betty and Larry divorced. The children all moved to Washington, so she bought a condo in Seattle. She missed sunny California, so she returned after two years. She settled in Summerset in Brentwood in 2000. She sang with the Summerset Singers and participated in bible studies and with the Red Hat Ladies. In 2010, she married Harold Sagert. They traveled to Michigan, Cancun and Florida and took a Panama Canal cruise. They bought a larger home in Summerset in 2011. Stroke damage to her memory limited her activities, but they shared their love and affection until the end. Betty is survived by her husband, Harold Sagert; her sister, Letha Hutchins; her daughter, Judith White; her sons, Jerry (Rosemarie) Miller and Michael (Barbara) Miller; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; an uncle, Clarence Raymond Kifer (age 100); and many cousins. She was predeceased by her brother, James Kifer, who left two sons and their spouses and children. Betty was laid to rest Jan. 15, at Union Cemetery in Brentwood. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m., on Feb. 22, at the Summerset I Club House, 1675 Crispin Drive, in Brentwood. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to your favorite charity.

Editor: One of your articles, titled “Community rallies to support paralyzed Brentwood youth,” on your Jan. 24 issue, was a very inspiring piece. The strength that Samantha showed in facing her obstacles toward her recovery is something anybody can learn from. Her family’s support in her recovery phase was just as admirable. As a registered nurse with multiple experiences in dealing with life and death situations in critical care, I can assure you that the greatest strength is drawn from the love that the family provides to the patient especially when our loved
ones are going through a major lifechanging event. As a parent of two teenagers, I can only imagine (what) this family is going through. Their story is something each of our brethren can learn and draw an inspiration from. This unique infallible strength sourced out of love and dignity from each other is what makes this story very uplifting. Thank you for this story of love and perseverance. Basketball games unite East County schools by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer
The sounds of basketball and pure joy radiated from the Freedom High School gym and outdoor blacktop during a seemingly routine day last week. But what appeared to be normal games of basketball were actually unique moments in time that players, spectators and organizers said they will remember forever. About 20 local school teams converged on the Oakley campus as part of the Special Olympics’ Schools Partnership Program, uniting special- and general-education students around the spirited game. “This provides (special-education students) an opportunity to socialize and participate in a sporting event with generaleducation kids,” said Sherri Roberti, the Contra Costa County Office of Education’s (CCCOE) Special Olympics Schools Partnership Program coordinator. “It’s great for the general-education kids, too, because they get to be around the special-education kids and show them the love and compassion they deserve. There are really athletic people out here today.” The CCCOE and Special Olympics Northern California events immerse students in sports year-round at county school sites, providing inclusive opportunities through soccer, basketball and track and field. Heritage and Freedom high school squads raced up and down the court in a friendly, fast-paced affair, while Falcons cheerleaders, dance line and dance team members amped up the court’s stars. Spectators rooted loudly, and Freedom varsity basketball players officiated the contests — often throwing out the rules in favor of
uninterrupted fun. In turn, the participants thrived. One Heritage player, Nathan, took time away from shooting to push his wheelchair-bound teammate, Johnny, from basket to basket — at one point allowing him to score via a makeshift basket created with his arms. “I like pushing Johnny and shooting,” Nathan said. Fellow Patriot teammate, Nate, soaked
up the attention, proclaiming during a game break that he loved his coach and would rather play defense. On the sidelines, Freedom senior Kendall Beede helped run the event as she absorbed the experience, a manifestation of her passion for campus unity. Beede created a school leadership position dedicated to working with life-skills students to promote inclusivity on campus. “It gives them the opportunity to see what it’s like to be a general-education student, so they don’t feel like they are being excluded or anything,” she said of the event. “It gives them interaction with other students, and the ability to understand competition and be a team player. Fellow Freedom student Alexus Slaney, a dance line member, noted that she enjoyed the event’s unity. “My favorite part is that we are all together,” she said. “We don’t usually do stuff like this. We do basketball and football games, but it’s fun to see everyone from different schools — not just Freedom — come together to do something like this.” While the on-court superstars proved they are winners, many in attendance remarked that everyone left victorious. “I think we as spectators benefit more, because we get to see the smiles, enthusiasm and love for the game,” said Heritage coach and teacher Loren Wortinger. “It’s good for everybody.” To view a slideshow, visit www.thepress.net/ multimedia/slideshows

With Brentwood’s Heritage and Liberty girls’ soccer teams tied, the clock ticking down and missing a pair of shots on goal earlier in the match, Liberty’s Kaitlin Carlton was focused on dribbling down the field. It seemed that not even the aching cramps on her calves were going to stop her from what she was about to do. With less than three minutes left in the game, it seemed like the match between rivals Heritage and Liberty was going to finish in a scoreless draw. But Carlton made sure her right-foot shot would send the Lions off with a victory. “I had to redeem myself,” said Carlton. “We’ve been working so hard ever since we last played them. Seeing our hard work pay off as a team was really rewarding.” After receiving a through pass from
sophomore Madison Del Prado, Carlton looked up, caught Heritage goalkeeper Tory Morfin off her line and, from 25 yards out, sailed the ball into the back of the net for the late 1-0 victory over Heritage. The win solidified a clear path to the league title for Liberty, after a 5-0 victory over Antioch on Tuesday night, earning them a share of the title. “I knew that we would put our best foot forward,” said Liberty head coach Tony Martins. “It means a lot. It’s a rivalry. I’m very proud of our girls.” The Jan. 21 tie between these teams only fueled this rivalry even more. The fans showed up. For a Thursday night soccer match, there seemed to be more energy than at some football games played at Heritage High School this season. Heritage had its own viable opportunities. Fast forward 14 years, and Maya is one of the top players on Freedom’s varsity boys’ soccer team. “It was mostly my dad who wanted me to play at first, and then I just kept playing every year,” Maya said. After a few years in a recreational league, Maya began to play competitively. He traveled for tournaments and worked on his game. Over time, his passion for the sport grew. “I love playing rough. I love talking to my teammates about how to play well and being there to help them out any way I can,” Maya said. “I just love the sport.” Maya said he loves the feeling he gets when walking onto the field and enjoys
cheering his teammates on from the sidelines as much as playing. Future Plans: Maya isn’t sure whether he will focus on his major or his sport in college. Bay Valley Ravens help players in need After learning two dedicated players were facing circumstances that would limit their ability to play football, the community stepped up to fund scholarships. The Bay Valley Ravens, a sevenon-seven community football team, recently awarded Jackson Commins and Jordan Lee with scholarships for the upcoming football season. Ravens President Paul Gates noted Jackson, a Freedom High School junior, is a great athlete with an outstanding work ethic, who is known to always have a positive attitude and is dedicated and eager to learn. “Jackson is that football player that every coach wants to coach,” Gates said. Jordan Lee is another junior from Freedom High School. Lee was an allleague first team player as a junior. “Lee is always in the gym, lifting weights and doing drills in order to improve his skills during the offseason ... ”

Gates said. “He is extremely hardworking and will not allow anything to stop him from reaching his goals.”
Both of these athletes wanted to be a part of the Ravens and grow as athletes, but due to unfortunate circumstances, Gates recently stated that they would be unable to be a part of the team this upcoming season. When community members heard both young men weren’t going to be able to be Ravens this season, they banded together to award them scholarships. “The local community and families knew and saw how much Jordan and Jackson wanted to be a part of this team and how deserving they were to be a part of it,” Gates said. “With the help of the community, the scholarships awarded to both Jackson and Jordan will help them better their futures in football.” The gesture is an extension of the Bay Valley Ravens’ organizational goals. Those in the opposition note that borrowing $15 billion is not only twice as expensive as paying for construction from the regular budget but that it will cost taxpayers $27 billion.
