Brentwood City Councilmembers will be elected differently come November, but each member will still represent residents equally, according to a recently adopted resolution. That is the upshot of the governing body’s recent declaration, even as it has adopted plans to replace the current atlarge election procedure with a system in which councilmembers will be elected by representative districts beginning this year. The mayor will still be elected at-large. “Every decision we make applies to and affects every single one of us, and we cannot afford to neglect anybody,” said Vice Mayor Joel Bryant. “We don’t have any throwaway, disposable citizens, families, communities or sides of town. We have one city; one beautiful community that is integrated and very diverse.” Under the new election structure — adopted last July after a months-long public process — a divided, four-area elecsee Residents page 30

A memorial for 16-year-old shooting victim Jonathan Parker grew in the parking lot of Deer Valley High School in Antioch, Monday, Feb. 3. Jonathan, a Deer Valley student, was shot during an altercation after a basketball game at the school Friday, Jan. 31, and died later that weekend.

As family and friends mourn the death of Jonathan Parker, questions remain as to how the 16-year-old Deer Valley High School (DVHS) student could have been gunned down on school grounds following a basketball game, Friday, Jan. 31. A press release issued by the Antioch Police Department (APD) stated that officers responded to the report of a shooting at 8:44 p.m. and found Parker in the school parking lot suffering from three gunshot wounds. He was transported by ambulance to the trauma center at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek in critical condition but later died as a result of his wounds.

“We, along with the rest of AUSD (Antioch Unified School District), denounce this senseless violence and call on the community to come together to address such vicious brutality,” wrote AUSD Superintendent Stephanie Anello and DVHS Principal Bukky Oyebade in a joint press release. “Our children must be taught that solving disagreements with violence is not the answer and that there are other ways to resolve our differences that do not result in the unjust and unnecessary killing of our youth. Finally, we ask that everyone in this community and nearby communities model the love and peace they hope to create.” A large memorial to Parker grew in the DVHS parking lot

Antioch submits request for homeless trailers by Aly Brown Staff Writer

The City of Antioch requested to take advantage of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s homeless trailer program in a decision made by the council this week. Just one day before the deadline, officials met in a special meeting Tuesday, Jan. 28, to approve the application that would request three to five of Newsom’s 100 trailers intended to house homeless residents throughout the state. If Antioch qualifies, it will be able to house three to five individuals per trailer. City council documents originally indicated 10 people would live in a trailer — a figure that was later corrected during the council meeting. “My friend has been helping a lady with her three kids who have been living in their car,” said Antioch Mayor Sean Wright. “This (program) will give us the opportunity to house a few small families that right now are living in their cars.” While the turnaround time on the application remains unconfirmed, advocates and officials have considered a plot of land on Wilbur Avenue owned by Joe Bosman, who has previously offered shelter to homeless individuals there. Nichole Gardner, homeless advocate and founder of nonprofit organization Facing Homelessness in Antioch, said Bosman’s property is out of sight from

the public and would present the ideal placement for the trailers, should Antioch’s application be approved. “He has RVs on his property that homeless people rent out, and he has hookups already,” said Gardner, who noted Bosman might need to do some further work to ensure he’s up to code if selected. “I think that’s the best route to go, and I think the city is thinking of him for these trailers. Maybe the city will pay him rent ... It’s just a start and would show that Antioch is doing something about homelessness.” Gardner supported a screening process for those selected to occupy the trailers. “There are many different faces to homelessness,” she said. “This is going to be transitional housing; it is not going to be permanent. Yes, you see people with drug issues and some people who don’t actually want to get off the streets. But we also have people out there who are wanting to better their lives. This trailer program would be targeting families and people who have been making moves or are willing to make moves in order to become better citizens and Antioch residents who can contribute to society.” Wright echoed the sentiment that homelessness can look differently than what most people think, noting Antioch’s all-star student, fundraising activist, musician, homecoming king and later UC

“ There are many different faces to homelessness. This is going to be transitional housing; it is not going to be permanent.

Nichole Gardner, Facing Homelessness in Antioch founder Berkeley scholarship recipient, Sage Bennett, was someone who spent his youth living in a car with his family. “Through the application process, what we’re looking to help is families with children — moms with kids or young people with nowhere to go,” said Wright. Neighboring cities have weighed in on whether they would consider similar measures. “The homeless population in Antioch is dramatically larger than that in Oakley,” said Oakley Mayor Kevin Romick. “ ... Based on the size of our homeless population and the desperate need in other regions of the state, I don’t see Oakley applying for trailers.” While homeless advocates and some city officials alike have shown support for

the trailer application, social media comments on recent publications announcing the Antioch effort have largely shown disapproval. “Why do we keep allowing this?” wrote Candice Lynn Rowlett in a public Facebook comment. “How are we ever going to clean up if this doesn’t stop? You don’t see this in (surrounding) areas, and we shouldn’t have to deal with it here. Enough handing out stuff all over A Street. That discourages new businesses from coming in and intimidates people and keeps them from coming here. At some point when, is another town going to take over?” Gardner, who has had a presence among the homeless community through her nonprofit work and has been working with public officials to address the crisis, said there will always be naysayers. “You don’t want to see them on the streets or in front of businesses, but if we’re trying to put them in a shelter out of view from the public, people complain,” she said. “They complain about human feces but then reject the idea of portable toilets. There will always be people who have something to say ... But God is working in the City of Antioch and is shedding light on his poor. At the end of the day, His people will be taken care of.” This is a continuing story. Check back for updates. To comment, visit www.thepress.net

from the states. Through her time on Corn Island, she’s formed deep bonds with the locals and gained their feedback on where they most need help. “I created a women’s group of 10 young women,” Hannah said. “We spoke about colleges, pregnancy, working while having a family — getting them to think about their futures. Many girls on the island were getting pregnant at 13, 14, 15. I had a swim school student the first time I went and then the next time I was there, she had a baby.” From the members of the women’s group, she learned the island didn’t have a single public library, and she enlisted the women to change that. She worked with the island’s mayor and brought books over every time she traveled. “We had shelves donated, and now I’m

at the point where I’m handing it over to them,” Hannah said. “Our deal for this project was that I would get it started and ready to hand off. (The island) had a lot of economic disasters just with the revolution happening in Nicaragua about three years ago, and they couldn’t afford to upkeep the island. The mayor was 100% supportive of the library.” The concept of the library goes hand in

Hannah Richardson couldn’t predict when she started a community project for Girl Scouts at age 15 that it would manifest into an ongoing commitment to changing lives in a third-world country, and now at 21, her efforts have taken a new shape. In 2014, after meeting a family whose young daughter died from drowning, Richardson started a swim school on Corn Island, Nicaragua, to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award, but her connection to the island and its people there has pulled her back time and again. In 2017, she transformed the Corn Island Swim School into a nonprofit organization called Corn Island Children’s Foundation, an organization pairing sponsors with children for school tuition. She then started a women’s advocacy group and, more recently, the island’s first public library. “I started the swim school with the initial goal to kick it off so (the islanders) could take it over, but I now see myself continuing to work with this community for my entire life,” said Hannah, a former Liberty High School student. Her decision to select the Corn Island community for the outreach project in 2014 arose after falling in love with the place during a family trip. With her mother, Cathy Richardson, being a flight attendant, Hannah’s been able to utilize free flights to visit frequently to have a hands-on role on-site when she’s not fundraising behind the scenes

hand with Hannah’s passion for education, which she realized was severely lacking support on the island. “The Foundation is working on scholarships for students to attend private school on the island,” she explained. “Twelve students last year were provided a full scholarship for tuition, uniforms, school supplies ... The funding was through a matching program. People in the states and some in Canada would choose to sponsor a child. Children would fill out the application with their parents — about them, their interests, what they want to be when they’re older — and the sponsors would be able to tell me what they were looking for. I’d provide three to four students they might click with, and they would decide who to sponsor. It was a big job for the first year.” Cathy said there is public school access on the island, but it’s not meeting the overwhelming need. “Students go for four hours a day, and it’s basically optional when they go to public school,” she said. “But the private school

The founder of an East County nonprofit that helps cancer patients around the nation is ramping up for another wave of adventure. Following its first-year success, Adventure Therapy Foundation — which opened its doors last January with a mission to give cancer patients a family vacation — will roll out a social-media platform through an app named My Cancer Card. Founder and Oakley resident Lauren Huffmaster is building a team of volunteers to develop the app she said will revolutionize the cancer experience. Similar to NextDoor, My Cancer Card will serve those with cancer by connecting them to their local community through geolocation. Anyone with a new cancer diagnosis will have free access to the app. “In a perfect world, when someone’s diagnosed, they will be given a flier for My Cancer Card,” said Huffmaster. “With one glance they can put in their zip, their age group, their diagnosis, and instantly see that, ‘hey, in my city, there are 30 other young moms with breast cancer,’ or ‘in my city there are seven to 10 nonprofits that can help me,’ or ‘in my city there are people who need help today or people who would help me today.’” For Huffmaster, a young mother of three who was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer, she felt the only apps available for cancer patients were built by people with an outside perspective — medically based, but wanting in the way of emotional care for the individual. From the families she’s met with through Adventure Therapy, she’s identified a common theme: there are residual feelings of isolation, fear and anxiety and a broken identity after treatment has ended. “Yes, when you’re diagnosed, you have a year of medical issues, but after those medical issues, statistics show there are at least five

years where you’re experiencing fear, anxiety and depression and post-traumatic stress, but no one does anything about that,” she said. “Once you’re done with treatment, you’re kind of just done ... With this platform, you can invest in people — people who are behind you in treatment or those in front of you — and all of a sudden, you can become something new. We’re giving the world an opportunity to feed into people who need it.” The app would be tailored to the individual, who, upon download, will be asked to identify their main fears and goals as someone with a cancer diagnosis. Not all goals must be cancer-centric. Some might wish to pursue fitness or an organic lifestyle or join a book club, and the app will connect them to businesses based on their interests. To make it free for patients, Huffmaster hopes to secure subscriptions from nonprofits that are servicing the community. The businesses can then promote their services and events. With a team of volunteers behind her, she hopes to launch My Cancer Card this year. Huffmaster happened to meet one of her lead volunteers through a serendipitous moment at the grocery store, when James Creston, 36-year-old Stage 4 cancer patient, was waiting in line to purchase his organic greens, and Huffmaster stood in line behind him. Through his conversation she overhead, Huffmaster surmised that Creston also had cancer, and she took a moment to share her foundation with him. “I felt very compelled by her passion for providing support for people going through cancer,” said Creston. Creston, who left his previous career to launch Vamp Salon in Oakley with his wife, now also dedicates his time helping to develop

CREDIT SCORE CHANGES

It’s possible that your credit score will change soon – either up or down. The company behind the most popular credit score (called your “FICO score”) has announced some changes to how they will be calculating scores starting this summer. There will be a stronger emphasis on your level of debt, along with taking a longer view of your historical payment history. There will also be more attention paid to whether or not you have personal loans. Previously, FICO did consider your payment history but put heavy emphasis on your most recent history. Now they will look further in the past to try to level out the ups and downs of life. They will also take a longer look back at your levels of debt over the past few years and average out how much debt you carry. By looking over a longer time horizon they are hoping to get a better feel for how you manage your debt and payments over time, rather than penalizing or rewarding you for what has happened just prior having your

credit report pulled. This means that if you normally pay off your credit card balances each month you won’t get penalized for one big purchase as you may have been in the past. It’s projected that 80-110 million people across the US will see their score move 20 or more points in either direction. About half will see their scores go up, and about half will go down. One controversial change is in regards to personal loans. Even if you pay it on time, just the fact that you have a personal loan may ding your FICO score. Many people will take out a personal loan to consolidate their credit card debt, but then they just run up their credit card balances again later. So your FICO score may suffer, even though it’s a “smart” financial move in the short-term. If you have questions about real estate, call me at (925) 240-MOVE (6683). Did You Properly Fund Your Trust?

FREE

by Joan M.Grimes, Esq. and Jennifer L.Wallis, Esq.

Engine Light & Battery checks

You went to see an estate planning attorney and you established your Revocable Living Trust. Yah! You are all done! Right? Many clients think that is all they need to do. Unfortunately, they are often missing the most important step: funding! After you establish your Revocable Living Trust, it must be funded. To fund your Trust, you or your attorney must re-title your assets to properly reflect that the asset has been transferred to your Trust. Are my Assets in my Trust? Here are the steps to check to see if your assets are in your Trust: Identify Your Trust Name – Every Trust has a name and establishment date. Generally, your Trust name and date will be included on the first page of your Trust. Read your name carefully. Every word is important! Here is an example. Let’s pretend my Trust name is Joan Grimes, Trustee of the Grimes Living Trust dated January 1, 2018. If an asset is titled as Joan Grimes, Trustee of the Grimes Family Trust dated January 1, 2018, it may cause problems! The name and date must match perfectly! Check Your Grant Deed – Check your grant deed and read it carefully to see if it lists your name or Trust. If your Trust name is listed, make sure every word matches your Trust name and date. If only your name is listed, your property is NOT in your Trust. Check Your Bank and Brokerage Statements – The easiest way to tell whether your bank or brokerage accounts have been transferred to your Trust, is to check the name in the top left corner (where your name and address are generally listed). Look to see if your Trust name is included. Business Interests, LLCs – Depending on your circumstances, you may have assigned your business interest or LLC to your Trust. If you wish to assign your interest, you should discuss this with

an attorney to ensure that the governing documents authorize the transfer. Retirement Accounts and Life Insurance Policies – Retirement accounts and life insurance policies are not generally transferred into a Revocable Living Trust because it can trigger certain tax consequences (however, there are sometimes exceptions to this general rule). If you wish to learn more, you should review these assets with an attorney to determine whether transferring them to your Trust is appropriate for you. What Happens if I Die and My Trust is Not Properly Funded? If your Trust has not been properly funded when you die, your beneficiaries may be required to open a probate to transfer the asset. Probates in California are very expensive and can often take over a year to complete. Conclusion: Check your assets to see if they have been properly transferred to your Trust! Some estate planning attorneys will fund your Trust for you. However, it is important to check all of your assets (particularly assets you have acquired since establishing your Trust) to ensure they have been properly transferred. If you would like me to review your Trust, I meet with clients Monday - Friday for a FREE 30 minute consultation. We have offices in Walnut Creek and Brentwood. Theater company gears up for new show Rehearsals are underway at El Campanil Theatre for the production of “City Mouse and Country Mouse.” When country mouse Sam calls out of the blue to invite his ‘cuz’ for a family visit, urbanite Alex is skeptical. But duly determined to reconnect with her rural kin, Alex puts family first and takes a leap — well, a flight — and then an ‘Oober’ to the ‘fifth house down on the road by the crick.’ Her country visit goes quickly awry when Alex finds herself lost in another world ... a world without WiFi or indoor plumbing. She skedaddles back to the security of city living but then feels badly for cutting short her time with her country family. So Alex extends an invitation to Sam, who quickly learns what it feels like to be a square peg in a round hole. In a hysterical restaurant scene, Sam’s reaction to sushi embarrasses all of Sam’s urban friends and leaves the country bumpkin bumming. Turns out, compatibility can be hard to come by, and there’s no clear answer as to whose way of living is better when two worlds collide. “City Mouse and Country Mouse” is directed by Sharon Redman and performed by El Campanil Children’s Theatre on Friday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $13 for adults, $11 for seniors age 62 and older, and $9 for youth under 18.

Performers of El Campanil Children’s Theatre take the stage for “City Mouse and Country Mouse,” which opens mid-February.

Scouts from page 5 education is so superior. Something that’s really touched me is that one of our friends on the island who works to enroll children in the public school said that the private school has had to hire more teachers because Hannah has raised so many funds for the enrollment.” With regard to the swim school, the tuition pairing, the library, the women’s group and other projects she’s worked on over the years, for Hannah, it was always important to find support for the people of Corn Island without overstepping her boundaries as an outsider. “All of the things I do come from the island,” Hannah said, noting the locals lead the direction of each project. “Everything in the library, except for the books, is 100% from the island and island-made; an artist islander is adding a mural to the library building. I always made sure to keep myself out of the project even when I led it … Corn Island has my heart. The people are so special and have welcomed me. I’ve always said, ‘I am coming in as a white person and I never want to overstep my boundary.’ I’ve told that to the island, the community, from the start: ‘If I am doing something that is offending you, please tell me. I will not take it personally.’ But it’s never been a problem, and that’s something

It is scary, we acknowledge it, your feelings are valid. All the anxiety and fears you have are 100% valid, but we’ve been through this, we know many people who have been through it and it doesn’t have to be scary. I could never do this.’ And yes, I was young, but I do think age in these types of situations doesn’t matter … Just get out there and help somebody; the sky’s the limit.” To donate, visit https://www.facebook. com/cornislandschildrensfoundation To comment, visit www.thepress.net

Wedding flowers becoming larger than life

W

Couples should speak with their florists about the innovative ways they can make flowers an even more awe-inspiring component of their weddings.

hile wedding trends come and go, flowers will always have a place

at the wedding table. The blooms brides and grooms choose and how they decide to display them can say a lot about the couple’s style. Many modern couples are opting for statement pieces with their flowers to rival the big and bold ideas they’re incorporating in cakes and clothing. Ed Plascencia, owner of Brentwood Florist, said that when it comes to winter and springtime weddings, large flower installations, as well as blooms popping up in unexpected places, are some of the hot trends for couples to keep their eyes on. “Couples are still interested in large statement centerpieces and floral baskets,” said Plascencia. “For right now, it’s roses and hydrangeas and as spring comes, couples are looking at tulips and daffodils.”

Floral chandeliers There’s no need to worry about seeing over table centerpieces or flowers getting in the way of photo moments. Thanks to hanging flowers and floral chandeliers, flowers are quite literally moving up in the world. Hanging floral pieces can add instant drama and make a large visual impact.

Couples are still enjoying traditional centerpieces, but are also adding floral chandeliers and curtains made of blooms for that added extra pop at their weddings. Florists can hang flowers from beams over tabletops to increase visual impact, whether as individual baskets, single stems or floral swags. Hanging floral chandeliers are dramatic but naturally expensive. Think about a large installation that forces guests to look up into a sea of greenery and flowers. The smell and the sight can be breathtaking.

Welcome wreaths Why should wreaths only be reserved for front doors and holiday decor? A welcome floral wreath can be placed by the

entryway to a chapel or reception hall with a heartfelt sentiment that shows guests how much they’re appreciated.

Fairy-tale flowers A floral curtain of hanging flowers can line a chuppah or drape the altar in beautiful blooms. Couples who would like a fairy-tale entrance also can make their debut as a couple by coming through a flower curtain at the reception. Martha Stewart Weddings says a cascade of flowers and greens can be romantic and elegant.

Dance floor blooms Who says flowers have to be overhead or on a table? With a plexiglass dance floor or one made from some other transparent material, flowers can be underfoot, creating a magical floral carpet.

Floral necklaces Brides needn’t all carry their bouquets. They can also wear ethereal and whimsical floral pieces around their necks or on their waists instead. Couples should speak with their florists about the innovative ways they can make flowers an even more awe-inspiring component of their weddings. – Courtesy Metro Creative

Planning from page 15

Does someone in your family have professional event-planning experience? This is the single greatest asset a professional event planner can bring to the table –– they simply have a long list of previous experiences that help them see events in different ways and anticipate any issues that might crop up. Many clients come to us with an idea of what their wedding will look like, but as we talk to them, we realize that there are a lot of holes in their vision. These are things that they would never have caught on their own, and if they did, it would be too late. However, a professional event planner can see issues in your time lines and budgets that the average person would not catch. Their experience also comes into play if there is an issue (or worse, a disaster) at your event. They can plan for problems and be ‘on’ when those issues arise. If you do not have someone in your family who has the experience that gives them this ability, it’s definitely worth hiring a planner.

… a professional event planner can see issues in your time lines and budgets that the average person would not catch. – Rayna Hess, owner, Eventfully Yours Event Designs

Additionally, it is a large job to place in the hands of a family member when maybe they would really just prefer to be a guest.

Do you have the resources? Certainly, planning a wedding is a very time-consuming process. I think it is important to consider whether you really have the time and resources to execute it well. Just because someone can physically fit in the time to pick floral arrangements, create the menus and contact vendors does not mean it is the best use

of their time or that each of those categories will be planned in the way that it deserves based on that person’s time limitations. Event planners dedicate time to executing these logistics and are reliable when it comes to knowing what it takes logistically to pull any event together.

The gray area ... In some cases, hiring an event planner is not a cut-and-dry situation. Perhaps there are aspects of your event where a professional planner would be very useful, but you don’t have the budget to bring someone

Factors to consider before choosing a wedding venue

W

hile couples must make myriad decisions during the wedding planning process, perhaps none is more significant than

where to tie the knot. Since the wedding venue comes with such a potentially high sticker price, couples should give ample consideration to a host of factors before

Insurance Ask about the venue’s insurance policies, including the policies the venue has to protect itself. In addition, ask if the venue requires couples to have their own wedding liability insurance for protection in the event of injury, property damage or incidents related to alcohol. Couples may also want to make the investment in cancellation or postponement insurance, and some venues may even require it.

choosing where to get married. Size Until they can agree on a guest list, couples might want to delay even looking for venues. However, some couples might want to first look at some venues so they can determine just how many guests they can afford to invite. Whether they’re hosting small affairs or large parties, couples should choose venues that can comfortably accommodate all of their guests. If possible, look for venues with multiple reception areas, which might allow for some wiggle room if the guest list grows or dwindles during the planning process. Availability Some couples might have an ideal time of year or even an exact date they hope to get married. While that can help with the planning, it can also limit venue options. Some venues may be booked for a year or more in advance during peak wedding season. Those who can be more flexible regarding their wedding dates may find it easier to book their dream venues.

Couples should have fun choosing their wedding venues while recognizing that certain factors must be given ample consideration before signing any contracts. Financials It’s easy for couples to focus on the bottom line when choosing wedding venues, but it’s also important to get a complete grasp of the financials before making a selection. Ask about the amount of the initial deposit and if that deposit is refundable. In addition, ask when the deposit is due and when each subsequent payment is due until the balance is paid in full. This can make budgeting easier and planning less stressful. –– Courtesy Metro Creative

Is the real estate market changing? Of course it is, however, the one constant in real estate is change. Historically, the market goes up and down, but we see full cycles every 18 years. The good news is with almost 20 years in real estate, that would mean I have seen it all. The current market still offers very competitive mortgage rates and buyers expectations are higher, so your home should be ‘market ready.’ Market ready includes curb appeal,

staging, professional cleaning and window washing. In turn, the sellers expectations should be equally as high to the realtor they have hired, with professional photos, custom websites, video and drone photography and an extensive marketing campaign. Real estate for most people is their top investment, so do your research on who you want representing your financial future. Love for the Senior Activity Center

Editor: I have been a member of the Senior Activity Center in Brentwood for many years and used to participate in some of the activities offered by the center. Recently, I had started to attend the ‘Oldies but Goodies’ class again. This class is well organized and supervised by Joe Ann with imagination and enthusiasm, keeping us all occupied and interested on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. What has impressed me with the atmosphere in the class of over 30 women (and the occasional man) was the camaraderie and eagerness with which they greeted and welcomed one another. Everyone was thoughtful, kind and helpful toward each other.

This class consists of people of every race and color, originating from many counties around the globe, and of diverse religious beliefs. Everyone was cooperative and understanding of the needs of each other. I, too, am an immigrant, and seeing this wonderful mix of cooperative individuals made me feel that this was America at its best, representing what this country stands for and means to me. I wish to thank the president and all the organizers and volunteers at the Brentwood Senior Center and the Brentwood Senior Activities Center, and I hope we will enjoy the many amenities and opportunities that are offered over many years to come. Liberty, Heritage squads clash on court by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

The Heritage High School girls’ basketball team entered its game with Liberty last week plenty motivated. The Lions had put a scare into the Patriots earlier this season; Heritage’s five seniors were honored before the game; and star Abby Muse took to the court just a few rebounds shy of 1,000 in her career. Heritage didn’t disappoint, racing to an 18-2 first-quarter lead, en route to a convincing 69-40 win. To make the win even sweeter, Muse grabbed her illustrious 1,000th career rebound just four minutes into the game, officially becoming a member of the school’s 1,000-1,000 club. She notched her 1,000th point on Dec. 27. “Honestly, I am really proud of this (rebound) accomplishment because rebounds are kind of underappreciated,” Muse said, before commenting on her team’s win. “I think we came out a lot more aggressive. We definitely had that last game in mind. Having that focused mindset and just being ready to go after them really helped us today.” The Patriots’ win came just weeks after they defeated Liberty 55-39 in a game that was much closer than the score indicated. “We talked about coming out a little more aggressive and just executing our offense,” said Heritage head coach Rob Ocon. “We didn’t do that very well the first time (against Liberty). We were a little bit more fired up for today’s game, and our defense was a lot better.” Senior guard Payton Bradley led the way with 18 points — 7 in the first quarter — and Muse added 14 points and 15 rebounds to propel Heritage (18-4, 7-0) to its fifth-straight victory. Guard Paige Ziemann (11 points) and junior guard Julie Ramirez (10 points) also scored double digits in the contest. Heritage executed from the start, scoring 18 first-quarter points and holding Liberty to single digits until midway

The Lions (19-14, 3-4) outscored Heritage 10-7 over the final five minutes of the second quarter to pull within 14, but the Patriots answered with a 10-2 run in the first two minutes of the second half to open a comfortable 22-point cushion. Liberty junior Rylie Manke led the Lions with 15 points (9 in the second half). Heritage also knocked off Rocklin 64-25 on Feb. 1 and Freedom 65-54 on Feb. 4. The Patriots are at the top of the

league standings, with a two-game lead over Pittsburg with only three league games remaining. Liberty defeated Deer Valley 59-19 on Feb. 4. The Lions host Freedom on Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m. Heritage returned to the court on Feb. 6 when it hosted Antioch. Results of that game were not available as of press time. Boys’ Game The Liberty High School boys’ basketball team used a 34-17 second half run

to upend Heritage 52-31. Lions sophomore forward Josh Clark led the charge, scoring a game-high 16 points — all in the second half — and senior guards Braden Basmagian, Kahli Custard and Zach Moll chipped in with 8 points each. The win was the Liberty’s third straight — all against league opponents — following a tough six-game losing streak. “The first half was a little rough for see Basketball page 22

Heritage girls’ soccer team knocks off Freedom by Jesus Cano Correspondent

The growing pains the Heritage girls’ soccer team experienced at the beginning of the season seemed to have really helped the Patriots with the way they’ve been performing. After starting the season off 1-1-4, the Patriots turned its fortunes around impressively, running on a 7-0-1 unbeaten streak. The team’s 4-0 victory over Freedom on Jan. 30 showcased its underclass-

men rising up to the occasion. “These girls play a high level of club soccer,” said Heritage head coach Gary LaFleur. “I think the team has embraced and encouraged to play the way they’re comfortable playing. I think they’re having a blast. I’m proud of all these players.” Three of the four goals recorded on the night came from freshmen. Taryn Richey scored her first of two with a strong right-foot shot. Abigail Salgado followed up not too long after by hitting a volley out of the reach of Freedom’s

goalkeeper. In similar fashion, Richey completed her brace by burying a volley of her own, making it 3-0 at halftime. “It’s a really fast style of play. We rely on passing the ball a lot more,” Richey said. “My goals were thanks to my teammates; they played really good balls.” Sami Wilson added another goal in the second half to make it 4-0. Heritage’s success could also be linked with a veteran move executed by LaFleur shaking up his lineup. Renny Bu-

chanan transitioned into a holding-midfielder and Hailey Hamataka moved up into an attack-oriented role. Hamataka didn’t get on the score sheet but looked dangerous up top. She’s nailed in four goals in league play. “We’re working on maintaining our composure and moving the ball around,” said LaFleur. “We need to fix the little things to keep moving forward.” The Patriots are tied with Liberty for first place with a record of 6-0-1. us in terms of getting a little anxious for the game,” said Liberty assistant coach Mike Gregory. “It was a little tight. But the second half we had them a lot more calmed down. They came out with a lot more fire.” The Lions’ offensive came in alive in the second half, largely due to Clark’s contributions off the bench. The sophomore scored 8 of the team’s 19 third-quarter points and 8 of 15 fourth-quarter points to propel the Lions (11-11 and 3-3 in league play) to victory. Liberty outscored Heritage 19-12 in the third and 15-5 in the fourth to hold Heritage down. Clark’s 3 with 3:58 remaining pushed the Lions’ lead to 18 and cemented the victory. “My defense really carried me,” Clark said. “When I first came in, I was nervous, I turned the ball over once, but I came back in, pressured the ball, forced

a turnover, and that is what carried me.” Heritage junior guard Lamar Murphy led the Patriots with 10 points in the loss, but Heritage as a team struggled offensively all night, held to a season-low 31 points, including single digits in the first, second and fourth quarters. The loss dropped Heritage to 9-13 and 3-3 in league play. Liberty was scheduled to play Deer Valley on Feb. 4. Results of that game were not available as of press time. The Lions host Freedom on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. Heritage bounced back on Feb. 4 with a 54-47 win over Freedom. Heritage was slated to travel to Antioch on Feb. 6. Results of that game were not available as of press time. Deer Valley sits atop the league standings with a three game lead over Heritage and Liberty with only three league games left to play. The rookies team recently completed a stellar season.

The East County Youth Lions junior varsity cheer team recently finished off its 2019 to 2020 campaign.

East County Lions Cheer dominates at JAMZ Nationals Since July 2019, the cheer teams of the East County Lions have been putting in the work. They are multitaskers perfecting their sideline chants to cheer on the East County Lions football teams, creating fun and creative halftime routines for the games and working on their routine for competition season. All of their work paid off, as competition season garnered Norcal Youth Football and Cheer Conference Champion titles in both rookies and JV divisions. Additionally, the JV group won the

JAMZ Capital City Championship title and the rookies finished second. The rookies also won the JAMZ Slam City Championship and the JV team finished second. Feeding off that success, the East County Lions cheer teams headed to Las Vegas to compete in JAMZ Cheer and Dance Nationals 2020. On the line for this extraordinary group of girls were a national title and the coveted national champion jackets. The East County Lions rookies cheer team competed first in Division 10 Level 2 Small, where they gave a stellar perfor-

mance and took home the national title for East County. The junior varsity took the stage next in Division 12 Level 2 Medium, where they dominated their competition, earning East County’s second national title of the year. Nationals marks the close of the 20192020 cheer season for East County, but registration is open to join the National Champs for the 2020-2021 season. What a difference a week can make My world came to an abrupt halt two weeks ago when my computer crashed. I didn’t realize how dependent I had become on my old desktop computer until that moment. I rely on it to write these Hangin’ in columns, stay on top of world events here but mostly shop. I also burn my own CDs, which tells you how old I am. I like to purchase songs from iTunes, create a playlist and then burn a CD, which Vicki I then play in my McKenna car. Thankfully, my car has a CD player. Newer models don’t even offer it. CD players are now obsolete like the 8-track player and the ashtray. My kids are disgusted with my CD burning and keep telling me I should just use Spotify and stream my music. I’m wasting my money they say, but I am paying for their monthly subscription to Spotify, so I think they should just zip it. Anyway, during the burning process my computer froze. I did what I always do when my computer freezes, which is also considered the worst way to turn off your computer: I simply held the power button in for 10 seconds and waited for it to turn off. Then I hit the power button again, assuming it would reboot. It didn’t. I tried all the tricks that YouTube offered and nothing worked. I sat there dumbfounded. I thought about all my emails, passwords, columns and pictures being held hostage by my dead computer. I began to panic. Then, I remembered a place called The Computer Guyz. The owner is a genius and knows his way around motherboards and hard drives, but you have to be willing to put the blinders on when you enter his shop. It is a mess. I am just being honest here. There are computer parts everywhere, and you can barely walk because of all the cords, electronics and keyboards on the floor, but I assume that must be how geniuses operate. Wait a minute. My house is also a mess, and I am surely no genius, so there goes my theory. Anyway, I brought my dead computer to him, hoping he could resurrect it and for a fair price. I had forgotten how the owner loves to talk. I mean he can talk! I’m not sure he even takes a breath, which means there is never a moment where you can politely interrupt him. So you just have to speak up loudly and say, “I have to go!” Which is what I did because it was time to take Scout to puppy school, and I was now running late. He promised to

T

call me with an estimate. Now, before I took my ailing computer to The Computer Guyz, I noticed that my four parakeets were low on water. I quickly filled up their water dishes, grabbed my computer and headed out the door. When I returned from The Computer Guyz, I opened the door to find both my dogs and four cats sitting in the middle of the living room staring up at the ceiling. A flash of yellow flew by my head, then a green flash. The birds were loose! I had forgotten to secure the latch on the cage, and the birds had all escaped. They were fluttering all over the house, chirping and enjoying their newfound freedom. I started screaming, “The birds are out!” Haley appeared at the top of the stairs just as one flew by her head. It was a miracle that all four parakeets were still alive, what with all the predators about. The dogs were barking, the cats were oddly calm, probably devising a bird-murder plan. The clock was ticking. Only 20 minutes until Scout’s puppy class, and I had to rescue the birds before I left. Leaving them in the house with all the animal assassins meant certain death. One by one, using a piano stool, climbing on chairs and hopping from couch to couch, I snatched them by hand. Did you know parakeets bite? But I kept going and finally, they were all safely back in the cage, much to the disappointment of the cats who quietly slinked away to take naps. I grabbed Scout. Scout hates the car and also hates school. He whined the whole way. We were 15 minutes late. The puppy school door was locked, so I knocked and the instructor opened the door. The eyes of all the other puppy parents were on me. I apologized for being late and offered up my story about having to rescue my parakeets, thinking I might get a laugh, but I didn’t. I just wanted to disappear, but all the chairs were taken, so I made a beeline for the corner and awkwardly sat down on the cold concrete floor. It was more like a collapse really, due to my arthritic knee. A nice man, who I am pretty sure felt sorry for me, offered me his chair. Getting up off the floor proved to be even more awkward, especially while still clutching my little dog, but I finally made it to the stool. Scout sat on my lap whining loudly and shaking uncontrollably. What a pair. Well, what a difference a week makes! My computer has been restored. The parakeets haven’t tried to escape after their thrilling bird adventure, and Scout actually performed his first successful ‘sit’ the other day. Time to sit back, relax and burn a new CD.

tion map will be used, with candidates chosen by and representing the districts in which they live. Candidates in Districts 1 and 3 will be elected in 2020, with Districts 2 and 4 filled in 2022. Current councilmembers will not have their terms extended or curtailed by the process, meaning that 2018-elected councilmembers Joel Bryant and Johnny Rodriguez will retain their at-large seats through November 2022. The terms of fellow councilmembers Claudette Staton and Karen Rarey are up in 2020. The change follows Walnut Creek attorney Scott Rafferty’s threats to sue the city over claims that Brentwood’s voting system violates the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA) by fostering an arrangement that dilutes the Latino vote. The CVRA — signed into law in 2002 — bans at-large election methods that impair a protected class’s ability to elect its selected candidates or influence an election outcome.

“I had studied racial vote dilution in our county for some time and initially took action based on concerns in the Latino community,” Rafferty said. “But without regard to race, a large portion of Brentwood’s neighborhoods lacked representation because the councilmembers were so concentrated geographically. Brentwood had also grown to the point where it had become very expensive to contest a council seat.” Brentwood officials have publicly stated they felt the city’s former election method didn’t violate the CVRA but that deciding not to change would put the city at financial risk. The move cost the city about $135,000 — far less than the legal fees it could have racked up fighting, and possibly losing, a lawsuit. Almost all the entities that have received similar demands, including the nearby cities of Antioch, Concord and Martinez, have settled out of court by agreeing to shift to district-based elections, said Brentwood City Attorney Damien Brower. Regardless of the change, however,

Community volunteers are circulating an initiative petition which would require the City of Brentwood to spend money on the safety of residents. These funds would come from The City’s growth in property and sales tax revenues. Tell your family, friends and neighbors, face-to-face, that if this Initiative doesn’t pass Brentwood’s emergency medical response will continue to degrade, from inadequate to nearly non-existent. Fire services, too.

Brentwood’s councilmembers are all committed to representing residents equally, according to the recently approved resolution. “While a councilmember will be elected by district, they will serve the entire community and should continue to ensure that resources be used to benefit the city as a whole,” wrote City Clerk Margaret Wimberly in a city staff report explaining the resolution. Among other things, the document’s declarations include that the council will continue governing on an at-large basis, considering the needs and interests of the entire community; remain united in its customer service to the community; provide excellent quality of life for all; help all members of the community,

over the weekend. Grief counselors were at the school Monday to help students and staff, and there was a conspicuous police presence consisting of several police cruisers patrolling the school grounds. As the APD investigation into the shooting progresses, police have not named a suspect or suspects in the case. “I’ve got detectives working hard on this case,” Antioch Chief of Police Tammany Brooks said. “I feel fairly confident that, hopefully within the next few days, we should have an update for the media regarding where we stand on the case ... I will say that we actually collected quite a bit of video. Our guys are working to analyze all of that. We’ll utilize that to try to identify the persons responsible and hopefully follow up and try to get the people in custody is the ultimate goal. We will continue working in that direction.” Jonathan was at Deer Valley to attend a boys’ varsity basketball game against the crosstown rival Antioch Panthers. The APD said that immediately after the game, a large group of individuals began fighting in the school’s parking lot. One of those involved produced a firearm and fired, striking Jonathan three times. The APD has not stated how many shots were fired nor the type of weapon they believe was used in the killing. No other injuries were reported. Anello told The Press in an email that, in anticipation of an intense rivalry between an undefeated Deer Valley team and a struggling Antioch team, extra security was present at the game. “We continue to be focused on the wellbeing of students following the tragic, senseless and heinous shooting of a Deer Valley student by what appears to be a non-DVHS student this past Friday night,” Anello said. “That being said, many are asking if security was present at the game. The simple answer is yes. In fact, the game was staffed with twice as many security personnel than other games due to the fact that we anticipated a larger

Each of the city’s councilmembers will sign the declaration, and it will be brought before each new council following an election. “It’s not this section of Brentwood or that section — it’s the whole,” Mayor Bob Taylor said of councilmember representation. The Antioch Police Department does not have any school resource officers at any of the schools in the City of Antioch. It’s a program that was cut probably 10 years ago. It was a result of budget cuts from the recession that just completely decimated the number of sworn police officers that we had.” As of press time, information regarding funeral services for Jonathan was not available. “(Jonathan) was an extraordinary young man full of life,” wrote Aurora Solorio on a GoFundMe page established to help Parker’s family. “He was truly an old soul. He didn’t ask for much or need much. He was always thankful and so happy with life. He didn’t understand why people were so cruel, but he truly tried to make up for it.” Parker’s GoFundMe page can be found at the following link: http://bit.ly/thepress_ jonathanparker.
