Author C.W. Gortner to discuss ‘The Romanov Empress’ C.W. Gortner will discuss his book, “The Romanov Empress: A Novel of Tsarina Maria Feodorovna” on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the Brentwood Community Center. Copies of the book, as well as his other works, will be available for sale. Gortner will sign them after his presentation. The San Francisco author has written several books of historical fiction, including books about Marlene Dietrich, Chanel, Lucrezia Borgia, the Tudors and Queen Isabella of Castile. “The Romanov Empress” follows young Princess Minnie, as she leaves her country behind to rule a new land and tries to

keep her family together in the face of world war and revolution. This year marks the 17th year of Brentwood Library’s CityRead program, when people are encouraged to read the same book, discuss it with friends and family and participate in many of the activities surrounding its theme. Community partners, including the Friends of the Brentwood Library, the Brentwood Art Society, the Brentwood Rotary, and the Lions Clubs of Brentwood and Discovery Bay, have sponsored CityRead through the years. Getting work done between the breaks by Tony Kukulich Staff Writer

Considering the Breakers – a volunteer group of craftsmen at the East Contra Costa Historical Society (ECCHS) – were named for their inclination to take long breaks from work, they somehow manage to get a lot done. Doreen Forlow, ECCHS president, asserts that the museum and its grounds would look very different if it weren’t for the efforts of the Breakers. “We couldn’t exist without people who are able and willing to do the things the Breakers do for us,” said Forlow. “We would have many less things to offer the public. The house would be much less than it is now.” Chuck Hunter, who co-chairs the group along with Bob Byer, said the Breakers were founded by Patrick McHenry, Norm Ruddick and Clyde Hawkins, with the intention of restoring items for display at the museum and maintaining the museum’s infrastructure. “They were the founders,” Hunter said. “They did the initial really hard work at the museum. We are their followers, and we are indebted to them.” Today, the group consists of eight active members who meet every Monday and Wednesday morning to perform restoration work or complete repairs. Funded completely by donations, the

The Breakers are a group of volunteer craftsmen who help restore and maintain ECCHS properties. group discusses what needs to be done, and Hunter and Byer make the final decisions about how their resources will be spent, noting that they have to watch their pennies carefully.

Hoping to attract new members, the group recently added one Saturday a month to accommodate those who may not be available during the current weekday schedule. Admitting that he’s not

exactly a master craftsman, Hunter says the most important quality in a volunteer is a willingness to help. see Breaks page 14

Local man makes mark on TV screen by Deanna Gordon Staff Writer

Jermaine Harris Jr. has long been interested in the arts, though he didn’t always know he wanted to be an actor. But when a fifth-grade performing arts teacher suggesting he give acting a try, he figured, why not? “I was into dance first,” Harris said. “(My teacher) said, ‘Just try it out. If you don’t like it, then try something else.’ Ever since then, I fell in love with it. If it wasn’t for her, I probably wouldn’t have gotten into it as soon as I did.” About a decade later, the 21-year-old who grew up in Pittsburg and Antioch has moved to Los Angeles, and already has television credits to his name — and he’s only getting started. His grandmother, Janie Johnson, is proud he’s following his dreams. “When he was about 13, he told me he had a vision that he was going to be a

Harris and Singleton hit it off, discussing acting and

directing, and Singleton told Harris when he was ready to pursue acting, to get in touch with him once he moved to Los Angeles. Singleton died earlier this year. Harris attended Paramount University in Los Angeles for a year, but now pursues acting full time. He had a role in three episodes of the final season of

HBO’s show “Ballers,” a comedy-drama starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Russell Brand. “I play one of three brothers,” Harris said. “My character’s name’s Lamar, and Russell Brand’s character is basically trying to recruit gamers into his company because he wants to venture out into gaming.” Ballers’ final episode aired on HBO Sunday night, Oct. 13. Harris said his experience on the show prepared him for future roles, as far as working on sets, knowing what to expect and understanding logistics. Next, Harris will have a role on the reboot of the ‘90s sitcom “Mad About You,” which starred Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser. The show is slated to debut on Spectrum, Wednesday, Nov. 20. He also says he has “something big” on deck, but he can’t share exactly what that is yet. Harris’ first acting love is film, which is what he hopes to eventually delve into. But as for now, he’s building his acting resume, going on auditions daily and enjoying the ride. “My main goal as far as my career goes is just to continue to inspire,” he said. “I know I want to win an Academy Award, because I’ve wanted that forever. My goal is just to have my work outlast me. I want to continue to create great pieces of art and great pieces of film.” The young actor says anyone looking to break into acting should go for it. “Don’t stop,” Harris said. “Don’t look at everybody else’s journey when it comes to this. If you really want to do it, then just do it. The biggest thing is yourself. Don’t let yourself get in the way if you want to try it.”

Medicare open enrollment - what you should know As we get older, there are more and more things to remember to do and when to do them. I write everything down in my handy dandy little blue date book, which appalls my family, who swears by their smart phones for Senior these things. It takes orner me a fraction of the time to write these appointments and reminder dates down in my book, as opposed to fumbling through my phone, dealing with the tiny spaces they give me. Marla Oh well, old habits Luckhardt die hard. Birthdays, anniversaries, doctor appointments for both Grandpa and me, and social engagements all get written down in my book. I send him an email by the month for everything. Not exactly state of the art, but it works for us. One such thing is open enrollment for Medicare. This year, the open enrollment period begins Oct. 15 and continues until Dec. 7 for 2020 coverage. During the annual enrollment period (AEP), you can make changes to various parts of your coverage, which include joining a new Medicare Advantage Plan or standalone prescription drug plan (Part D) and switching between Original Medicare

C

with or without a Part D plan and Medicare Advantage. Any changes you make during Fall Open Enrollment will take effect Jan. 1. In most cases, fall open enrollment is the only time you can pick a new Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, when you should review your current Medicare health and drug coverage — and if you are dissatisfied with your coverage for next year, make changes during this time period. Even if you are happy with your current Medicare coverage, look at other options in your area that may better suit your individual needs in the upcoming year. We did a lot of research for this area — really, it was all Grandpa — and found only three options: Kaiser, United Health Care and Humana. Unfortunately, there is really only one plan our doctor honors, so that should be part of your research as well. Choosing a plan is not only about the monthly cost but about coverage and accessibility to your favorite health care providers. Monthly Medicare costs are taken out of your social security checks. Our research showed people with Part D could lower their costs by shopping among plans each year. Each county and state has different options. There could be another Part D plan in your area that covers the drugs you take with fewer restrictions or lower prices. There is a toll-free number for assistance if you want to join a Medicare

Advantage Plan. Call 1-800-MEDICARE to find out which plans are in your area. When you receive the list of plans, check their websites or call to see which best fit your needs. Look at everything offered to you and weigh the differences before you decide. Make sure the plan includes your doctors and hospitals in its network. Confirm the plan covers all your current medications and that your pharmacies are also in the preferred network. Write down everything about your conversations, including the date, the representative you spoke to and any outcomes or next steps. This information may help protect you in case a plan representative gives you misinformation. Enrolling in a new plan directly through Medicare is the best way to

protect yourself if there are problems with enrollment. If you are unhappy with your plan after open Eenrollment, check into The MA OEP, which also occurs each year from Jan. 1 through March 31, with changes taking effect the first of the month after you enroll. During this time, you can switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another, or switch from a Medicare Advantage Plan to Original Medicare with or without a Part D prescription drug plan. If you are happy with your current plan, you do not have to do anything. Open enrollment is only for changes. This can all be quite confusing. I know it boggles my mind with all of the options. One helpful source is the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP), which provides free, objective information about Medicare. Volunteer counselors are on call to guide you through the maze of information and help you understand your specific rights and health care options. They can be reached at 1-800-434-0222 or on their website at www.cahealthadvocates.org/ hicap. As for us, we are very happy with our doctors and local pharmacy. Thanks to Grandpa, we were able to evaluate and decide. Marla Luckhardt is a Brentwood resident who works with several local senior care and advocacy groups. Reach her at marla2054@aol.com.

Skateboard clinic for kids, teens with special needs by Deanna Gordon Staff Writer

A local nonprofit will host a free skateboarding clinic for children and teens with special needs at Brentwood Skate Park, Sunday, Nov. 3, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The clinic is hosted by Be Exceptional, founded by Lynda Green in 2007 as a way to combine her passions in dance and working with individuals with special needs. The program has evolved to hold various classes in dance, fitness and cheerleading at its location at Elite Dance Studio at 304 G St. in Antioch. The nonprofit is now tackling skateboarding. “I have been teaching dance to both typical and children with special needs for almost 30 years now,” Green said. “I have helped with many sports for students with special needs, such as basketball, swimming, bowling and skateboarding ... Skateboarding is something that can help the kids socially and physically. I have noticed that the kids enjoy the challenge of learning and trying new things.”

Skate Director Joey Ogo says they have worked with other groups in the past — like The A.skate Foundation, an organization that brings skateboard clinics to people on the autism spectrum — but this event is the first in the name of Be Exceptional. Ogo has been skateboarding for decades and enjoys sharing his love for it with others. “Our goal is just to provide the aspects of skateboarding that I’ve seen help me provide that for people with special needs,” he said. “It also integrates with other people, like the volunteers.” Be Exceptional events utilize a buddy system, pairing volunteers with participants depending on their experience and need. Many individuals on the Be Exceptional staff have a background in social work, like Ogo, or have other experience working with kids and teens with special needs. “We also will have people just being introduced to working with that population,” see Skateboard page 8

Ask us how to lose 20lbs in 30 days!

NO Bloating, hot flashes or headaches! More ENERGY! ACNE GONE!

Nowadays, some people bounce from lender to lender to lender, searching for that absolutely lowest possible rate on the internet. I’ve seen buyers switch lenders two weeks before close of escrow to save a few bucks. So some lenders only ask a few basic questions and then print out a pre-qualification letter with lots of asterisks in them. Once they feel confident that the buyer is actually going to use them, then they’ll do the heavy lifting to REALLY discover if the buyer can qualify. It is at this point that red flags can pop up and derail the transaction. So if you are a buyer, be sure to cooperate with your lender and give them ALL the documents they need so they can do a thorough pre-approval process with you so there are no surprises later. If you have questions about real estate, call me at (925) 240-MOVE (6683). Voted “Best of Brentwood” multiple times. To search the MLS for free, go to: www.SharpHomesOnline. com. HOW GOOD IS THE PRE-QUAL?

When I first got my license 20+ years ago, I was trained to always get a pre-qualification letter from a buyer before showing property, or before accepting an offer if I was representing the seller. This was touted as an almost sure-fire way to prevent your deal from falling apart at the last second. While getting a prequal/pre-approval letter is still sound advice, having one certainly DOESN’T guarantee the buyer will get approved for their loan. Sometimes you’ll see a glowing pre-qualification letter only to have the buyer get turned down for their loan later. What gives? Some lenders assume that all buyers are “rate-shoppers.” In years past, when someone called up a lender and asked for a pre-qualification letter, 80-90% of the time they wound up using that lender. So the lender would pull out the stops to verify all the income, down payment, credit and employment info. This resulted in much better lender letters because red flags would show up early, before the buyer even wrote an offer on a home.

Social media anti-bullying talk for students

What A Quality Sports Club Feels Like

Kim Karr, co-founder of #ICANHELP, will deliver a presentation on social media to the students at Delta Vista Middle School, Friday, Oct. 25. #ICANHELP is a nonprofit corporation that educates students on the proper use of social media and empowers them to deal with conflict, negativity and harassment online. It will also instruct students and adults on how to maintain a positive digital footprint and be a “digital first responder” in order to navigate around a digital world and provide a curriculum in which these students will spread the message. “We don’t usually think of it, but just like the way negativity can spread, people can be swayed or encouraged when the majority are doing ‘good’ online,” said Karr. “Students just need to be shown how to respond to the negativity. We need to empower our future generation to take action against

all the issues that are arising with technology. Through #ICANHELP, students are learning that kindness is saving lives, and it doesn’t have to be anything big — a simple smile or a nice post-it note on a locker might be all it takes.” Students are empowered stakeholders, and their help is needed in the digital world. Karr says #ICANHELP has worked with over 300,000 students to be the digital change they want to see. This student-led approach to solve some of the complicated issues and social problems with tech use sees students as part of the solution, not the problem. It aims to raise awareness, offer real-world best practices and celebrate the many examples of students using digital for good. For more information on #ICANHELP, visit www.icanhelpdeletenegativity.org, email Kim Karr at kim@icanhelpdeletenegativity. org or call 925-237-1056.

OBITUARIES

Frank J. “Mike” Rozenski

Sept. 5, 1927 – Oct. 2, 2019 M i k e Rozenski, 92, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by Lois, his loving wife of 71 years, and his children, Valerie, Pamela and Michael. Frank was known by all as “Mike.” He received his nickname as a boy in his birthplace of Antigo, Wisconsin, from his constant companionship with a friend of his father’s named Mike. The family moved to Antioch in 1943, when his father was transferred for his job as a train conductor for Sante Fe Railroad when Mike was 16 years old. In 1944, Mike left Antioch High School in his junior year to join the Navy. He served aboard the battleship USS Arkansas and fought in the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima during WWII. He received an honorable discharge in 1948, returned to Antioch and married Lois Wilson on Thanksgiving Day of that year. Mike worked in the mills around Antioch and for various local farmers and crop dusters in the Brentwood area. In 1961, Mike and Lois built their home in Brentwood, where the family still gathers. In 1966, he went to work for the State of California Department of Water Resources in Byron and retired in 1989. Throughout his life, Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and traveling the country with Lois in their travel trailer. He

especially looked forward to annual deer camp at Sage Hen Meadows in Mono County, where he and Lois would meet dozens of their friends from all over California for close to 50 years. When Brentwood farmers needed orchard trees removed, it was Mike they called. He could cut, clear and stack wood like a lumberjack: two trees for Mike and one for the farmer. He also enjoyed refinishing furniture, reading wildlife books and playing the dollar machines in Jackson. Wearing his signature yellow measure-tape suspenders, Mike walked his dog Dobie all over town, kibitzing with friends he met along the way. With a wink and a nod, Mike took amusement at picking cherries from Stoney’s orchard behind his home. They must have tasted sweeter when picked after hours. Mike is preceded in death by his parents and siblings. He is survived by his wife, Lois, and his children Valerie Granado (John, deceased), Pamela Rozenski (Bernie LaCroix), and Michael Rozenski (Gina); two grandsons, John Granado (Raquel) and Paul Granado (Marisol); eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Private services for family will be held graveside. A celebration of life gathering will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, from 1-4 pm at Michael and Gina’s home (6155 Sellers Ave, Oakley). The Rozenski Family sends a special thanks to their neighbors, the Parkhurst family, for their continued support over the years. Also, thanks to Aysha, Jenny and Rachel of Hospice East Bay for the tender care they provided to Mike. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice East Bay, 3470 Buskirk Ave., Pleasant Hill, CA 94523, in Mike’s name.

Jimmie Wallace Walker

Jan. 9, 1933 – Oct. 2, 2019 Jim W. Walker passed away peacefully at his home in Brentwood early in the morning on Oct. 2. He was loved by all who knew him, and he will be missed. The youngest of eight children, Jim was born in Depression-era Sayre, Oklahoma, to Henry “HC” and Dicie Walker. After graduating from Sayre High School in 1951, he enjoyed a four-year tour in the U.S. Navy, most of it spent stationed in Hawaii. After the Navy, Jim began a long career at Dow Chemical, where he met his first wife, Jeanne. They settled in Concord, where they raised a loving family. He has been a resident of Contra Costa County ever since. He enjoyed traveling and was always eager to go on road trips. Following a debilitating stroke and the passing of Jeanne, Jim found a new love and an extended family with Elizabeth, and her children John Sanchez, Lucas Sanchez, Robert Sanchez, Karen Matthews and Lori Crowley. Elizabeth and Robert were the main providers of Jim’s care in his final years, and we are all forever grateful for them. Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Elizabeth; and his three children, Michael Walker, David Walker and Laura Walker; as well as six grandchildren. A very kind and loving man, he was well known around town and loved getting out and spending time with others. His absence will be felt by many.

ESTATE PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS FOR SENIORS: APPOINTING A CO-TRUSTEE

by Joan Grimes, Esq. and Jennifer Wallis, Esq. Are you thinking about appointing a Co-Trustee to help you manage your Revocable Living Trust? Recently, we have met with several clients who have had questions about appointing their child or another individual to serve as a Co-Trustee. When should you consider appointing your child as Co-Trustee? While you and your spouse are able to handle your personal and financial affairs, we generally do not recommend appointing a Co-Trustee. However, if your spouse passes or if you would like additional assistance, then you might want to consider appointing your child to serve as Co-Trustee. A Co-Trustee can help manage and control all of your Trust assets. For example, when my mother turned 85 years old, she informed me that she wanted help paying her bills and managing her money. I was more than happy to help. To facilitate this change, my mother appointed me as Co-Trustee and I was able to manage her Trust assets. Once appointed, my mother and I went to her financial institutions so I could be added as a Co-Trustee to all of her Trust bank and brokerage accounts. Her financial institutions also issued new checks to reflect that I had been appointed as a CoTrustee. Once added to the accounts, I was able to easily manage and monitor her Trust assets. I could also write checks to help her pay her bills. If I add my child as Co-Trustee, what will their responsibilities be? This answer will vary depending on your personal needs. The benefit of adding a child as CoTrustee is your child’s role can evolve to meet your needs as you age. In the beginning, your Co-Trustee can help monitor your accounts. However, if you need additional assistance in the future, your Co-Trustee

can take a more active role and begin paying your bills and managing all of your Trust assets. Will appointing a Co-Trustee help protect against elder abuse? Yes! Appointing a Co-Trustee can help protect against financial elder abuse. Sadly, we have met with seniors who have lost substantial assets as a result of elder abuse and fraudulent transactions. By allowing your Co-Trustee to monitor your accounts, you can help protect yourself against potential elder abuse and fraud. If I appoint a Co-Trustee will they be able to amend or revoke my Revocable Living Trust? Generally, a Co-Trustee who did not establish or create the Revocable Living Trust does not have the authority to amend or revoke the Revocable Living Trust. However, you can decide how much power and authority you wish to give your Co-Trustee. It is very important to carefully read your Revocable Living Trust to understand your Co-Trustee’s power and authority to manage Trust assets. While adding your child as Co-Trustee can be very beneficial, it is important for both you and your Co-Trustee to first understand the role of a Co-Trustee. We meet with clients every day in our Walnut Creek office to discuss these types of estate planning issues. I offer free 30 minute consultations for all new clients. Breaks from page 4 “I’m not a skilled woodworker at all, but I can paint,” said Hunter. “I can carry stuff.” The current Breakers bring a wide variety of skills and experiences to the ECCHS, a fact that benefits the society. And despite their disparate backgrounds, there is a commonality in almost all members. At one point or another, most have spent time working on cars, either collecting, restoring or racing them. “The Breakers are an incredibly varied group of guys,” said Hunter. “We have a nuclear engineer and guys who finished high school. We have one man who worked on the space program. I was a college professor. We have a former IBM manager. We have people who worked for the water district. One of our guys, Bob Byer, drives our fire truck in the parades. He started driving that truck when he was 16 as a volunteer firefighter.” Len Ferrier, well regarded among the Breakers for the chocolate chip cookies he often provides, said he can’t recall what first drew him to the museum, but he got involved in the restoration of the fire engine that once belonged to the Byron Fire Protection District. “I was one of the first three guys to work on the fire engine,” said Ferrier. “They were cleaning it up, getting the squirrels and bird nests out of it. That got me started here in the museum. I stayed with it, and we’ve done a number of different projects. It’s been just a fun

gang. Our motto is: ‘If we’re not having fun, we don’t come back.’” In addition to the fire engine, the long list of projects completed by the Breakers includes the construction of the Kathy Leighton Resource Center, restoration of the Eden Plains schoolhouse, the restoration of an 1880s teacher’s buggy and restoration of the Byron Hot Springs Hotel omnibus. The omnibus is a horse-carriage built by the Studebaker Brothers that was used by the hotel to transport guests, and is believed to be only one of three left in existence of the nearly 2,500 that were built. Echoing the sentiments of all of the Breakers, Hunter said his work with the Breakers has been enormously satisfying. “I love history,” said Hunter. “I love teaching. I love the opportunity to give back to the community. I’m docent for when the school kids come out, which is just a marvelous high. I think it’s good to remain active. But very selfishly, I do it for the satisfaction of being able to give back, and also for the enjoyment of working with all the people that are out there. It is an amazing, amazing conglomeration of individuals with different backgrounds, different perspectives, different politics, but we never discuss politics. We all have a common purpose. That’s basically why I’m out there.” For more information on the East Contra Costa Historical Society or volunteer opportunities there, visit www. eastcontracostahistory.org, or call 925634-8651.

MEASURE L HELPS FIREFIGHTERS BE PREPARED By Building a Fully-Staffed New Fire Station

The Vineyards at Deer Creek — the 80% senior community created by Measure L — made a binding commitment in writing to provide $11 million to the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District and millions more annually in ongoing tax revenue. Per the legally binding agreement, the proponents of Measure L will write the check to build a fully-staffed new fire station — at no cost to taxpayers — because it’s the right thing to do. Measure L won’t solve all the problems for our fire district, but it is a down payment on improving fire safety for Brentwood. Measure L will provide funding to: Pay for more firefighters and first responders

Getting the facts on Measure L With just a few weeks left before the special election on Measure L, the following offers some historical background and factual information regarding the proposed road improvements that would come from the passage of Measure L. To start, we need to go back ditorial 25 years, when the land at the west end of Balfour Road was originally within Brentwood’s sphere of influence and was in the City’s previous general plans to eventually be built upon. High schools and shopping centers were planned on the Brentwood side with golf courses and hospitals on the Antioch side, all with the expectation that in the next several years the rest of the homes and road improvements would be continued. Unfortunately counties, and cities don’t always see eye to eye. In fact, in August 2000, there was a countywide action taken by the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, not just to our boundaries to the west, but to other areas around Contra Costa County. We had some county supervisors that wanted to be the controllers of more land so they would to

E

be able to control the growth instead of the individual cities and develop projects such as “The Lakes” at the other end of Balfour Road, with no improvements to Balfour until 10 years later. So what happened was that schools, shopping centers, golf courses and hospitals get built and then all of sudden, they are located at the edge of town and the rest of the growth never came. Then the development of Roddy Ranch failed to materialize, shopping centers went through foreclosures and two schools got built on a dead-end road. The City of Brentwood had no legal authority to stop it or change anything. Now you know why American Avenue dead ends at the top of the hill and Balfour goes from a four-lane divided highway to a very dangerous two-lane road with zero shoulders and a big hump in the middle. And unfortunately over the last several years we’ve had way too many accidents on that end of Balfour Road. Facts on Measure L One of the major benefits of Measure L is that part of the development agreement specifies that Balfour will finally get its much needed safety improvements, including the

Letters Antioch should take Measure L

Editor: If Brentwood voters don’t approve Measure L, Antioch should annex the land and approve the homes. In November, Brentwood voters will have the opportunity to do what Antioch voters did in 2005 — approve a new housing development and undo what the five members of the board of supervisors did to a few landowners and the plans by Antioch and Brentwood. On the ballot is Measure L, which will annex about 800 acres and approve 2,400 new, upscale homes, 80% of which will be for seniors. The land in the Measure L plan has been inside both the City of Antioch’s and City of Brentwood’s planning areas for decades. However, it’s not been in either city’s sphere of influence or city limits. It was also inside the voter-approved urban limit line until the county supervisors played political games and moved it out in 2003. That included the land that planned for the Roddy Ranch housing development surrounding the former Roddy Ranch golf course, as well as all the land north of the ridgeline that runs on the south side of the former golf course and continues into Brentwood behind Heritage High School and Adams Middle School. So, it makes sense the land is moved back inside the urban limit line and the homes built. 1998 was my final of four years serving on the Antioch City Council, the Contra Costa Transportation Authority and the

building of the American Avenue extension back to Balfour close to where the hump is, which will disappear with the road improvements. The good news is that both the American Avenue and Balfour Road extensions will be built to the City of Brentwood’s current road specifications which include bike lanes – all done with no city or taxpayer dollars. The beauty of this, for any of you who have ever had to drop off your child at Heritage or Adams and realized that for three blocks, there are hundreds of cars in the left-hand lane – while the right hand lane remains empty – there will be a solution! When Balfour is widened to four lanes, to the new American Avenue extension, a percentage of the cars who had to turn left at the current American Avenue will now have the pleasure of going straight and then turning left at the next intersection, the new American Avenue extension. Now let’s talk about heading north towards Sand Creek Road, the extension to Kaiser, which is being built by Black Hawk/ Nunn, the authors of Measure L. The measure includes building the extension of Hillcrest Avenue from where it is currently

to the

State Route 4 Bypass Authority. That year, while serving as chairman of the Bypass Authority, we bought the right-of-way for the extension to Highway 4 from Lone Tree Way to Balfour Road for four lanes of traffic and two lines of transit down the center. The plans and funding for the Highway 4 widening and bypass/extension, as well as the major roadways in Antioch, included those homes. A total of 12,000 homes were included in the planning for the regional roads in East County. Now, the plans in Antioch include only 4,000 homes, and the 700 homes at Roddy will never be built because that land was sold to the East Bay Regional Park District and is permanent open space. The homes in Measure L will not create urban sprawl as some opponents claim. I laugh when I hear that about growth in Contra Costa County. I grew up in southern California and was a chauffeur while attending college in Riverside, driving clients into Orange County and Los Angeles, where I saw the results of urban sprawl. But in our county, the urban limit line protects about 65 percent of the land in the county from subdivision development. This land is inside the 35 percent of the land the voters said could be built on. That’s why the land was purchased by developers years ago – before the supervisors arbitrarily moved the line in. It’s time either Brentwood or Antioch voters corrected their action.

being extended in the City of Antioch to come over the hill and meet up with Balfour at approximately halfway between the current American Avenue and the extension. Because of the development currently happening in Antioch to the north of this land, the new Sand Creek Road is in the first phase of development plans. Hopefully within the next three to four years, if we continue with our smart growth plans, we will be able to drive from The Streets of Brentwood all the way to Kaiser on the new Sand Creek Road or turn left on the new Hillcrest extension and go south to Balfour or turn right and go north to Lone tree way. I have heard concerns questioning whether the developer will do what they say and the agreement states that American Avenue and phase one of the Balfour Road infrastructure must be in place prior to being able to sell any new homes. This means the developer has to outlay tens of millions of dollars before they have an opportunity to sell one home! Sounds like a solid commitment to me. To view maps of the proposed project, visit www.thepress.net Greg Robinson Publisher/Owner

If Brentwood doesn’t want them, those are the kind of homes Antioch wants and needs for our housing mix, especially now that Roddy Ranch is permanent open space and the homes planned for the western Sand Creek area might never be built. Allen Payton Antioch

Yes on Measure L

Editor: I have lived in Brentwood 25 years and been actively engaged in my community since population 10,406. Why vote “yes” on Measure L? Safety for our students: complete the American Avenue loop and build improvements on Balfour Road first thing. Public records show both school districts and city voted in 2008 for the safety improvements tied to the ULL being moved. This is that answer exactly as recommended. Brentwood has waited over 15 years for these solutions to safety access to Adams and Heritage. $200+ million in fees – including fire protection – emergency response equipment and staffing, and other such services, without raising your taxes. Millions for local schools, plus ongoing revenue in the millions and less than 300 new students over the 20-year development plan. (Per documented agreement, if Antioch grabs the land, dramatically more students will be added.) Reduced school bond fees.

Hundreds of permanent local jobs, including 200+ health careers at John Muir and Kaiser and 20 years of jobs for local laborers — work where your family lives! Preserves over 1700 acres of land, per Save Mount Diablo. The land is currently private land not used for farming. Annexation provides for more land to be permanently preserved and 225+ acres within the Vineyards will be planted for productive agricultural use. 80% senior homes — less crime and rush-hour traffic than other homes. Added traffic will be largely addressed see Letter page 20

by American Avenue loop and additional lanes on the western portion of Balfour and additional roadway improvements. Paid by the project, not by taxpayers. $20+ million. Measure L opens options for safety improvements to Deer Valley Road. Local value and funds. City government and school boards know most new money comes by local taxes being raised or builder fees being collected. No magic money is going to appear in our city or school budgets. Research will show Blackhawk Properties has consistently given more extras and perks back to Brentwood than any other developer. Over the past 25 years, the homes they built still hold the highest property values in the city and collect the most property tax revenue per home than any other homes contributing to Brentwood’s annual city budget. Once we vote “yes,” we have nearly a year of public hearings and meetings to fine-tune many other details. The construction will be paced out over nearly 20 years to grow slowly. This is a lifesaver for our wonderful community. It adds rooftops. Do I believe the benefits far outweigh the number of rooftops? Yes! Antioch will grab this land. They are desperate for Measure L to fail and are strategically denying interest. They did that a few years ago and grabbed land in a similar way. Concerned for Brentwood’s future

Editor: My name is Ken Ervin, and I am not usually very active when it comes to local politics. However, Measure L to extend the urban limit line has me concerned for the future of Brentwood. The reason you see so many large “Yes on L” signs on commercial and city property is because this measure comes down to money. The large number of small “No on L” signs on personal property is because these are people who are concerned about how this will change the feel of Brentwood, which is already growing beyond its Master Plan. I would also like to point out there are already intentions to develop a large area south of Balfour and west of Heritage (John Fink, former planning commissioner). The city is interested because it means more tax revenue. Retail business likes it because its means more potential customers. City services, such as police, like it because they can increase their staff — a relatively small increase in local jobs. But at what cost? 1. More homes and people with few local long-term industry jobs. 2. More traffic congestion. 3. Continued urban sprawl. Promoters cite “advantages” and a scare tactic in their promotional material and I would like to point out some real problems with these “advantages.” Please go to www. betterbrentwood.com or the Alliance for a Better Brentwood Facebook site for the full letter, due to limitations on letter length. Ken Ervin Brentwood

OPINION

‘No’ on Measure L to stop sprawl

Editor: Like so much of the Bay Area, Brentwood has been growing exponentially, and it now faces a decision that will have huge implications for the type of city it will become. A developer, Blackhawk Nunn Partners, is planning a sprawl development on 800 acres of Brentwood farmland — a 2,400unit subdivision outside the urban limit line, a voter-approved boundary line meant to discourage urban sprawl and contain development within city limits, beyond which urban development is not allowed. The proposed development includes housing and commercial development. The project will also require several off-site infrastructure additions, including the extension of a new off-site sewer line, extension of a new irrigation line within Balfour Road, and the extension of American Avenue west and north to Balfour Road. Any such development outside the ULL requires voter approval, and the developer has succeeded in placing Measure L on the November ballot, which, if passed, would extend the ULL and allow the development project and its associated environmental impacts to occur. The recently completed environmental impact report for the proposed project identifies many significant and unavoidable impacts, including a substantial degradation in visual character and quality of the site, conversion of locally important farmland, and increases in air pollution, ambient noise levels, traffic congestion and delays at several intersections along Balfour Road. These are all inevitable results of sprawl development. Our organization, Greenbelt Alliance, exists to discourage such sprawl and encourage smarter growth throughout the Bay Area — that is, growth that creates new homes, shops, and workplaces within existing cities and towns. Done right, it can deliver economic, environmental, and qualityof-life benefits to the Bay Area, including Brentwood, while easing development pressure on the greenbelt of natural resources that exist beyond our cities and towns. For this reason, Greenbelt Alliance (as well as other groups, such as Sierra Club and the Northern California Carpenters Regional Council), urge voters to vote “no” on Measure L. In Measure L lies Brentwood’s choice: Do residents want to double down on sprawl, destroy Brentwood’s farmland and agricultural heritage, and continue its trajectory toward being an outpost for other, more thoughtfully planned cities? Or will Brentwood choose a different future — one where Brentwood residents walk, bike and bus to work right in town, where homes that are affordable across the income spectrum are built close to services and amenities; where the agricultural economy is dynamic and alive; where the surrounding open space is full of coyotes and hawks and the agricultural land is full of tomatoes and cherries? Faced with these options in the past, Brentwood has chosen the latter. Now, Greenbelt Alliance is hard at work with our community partner, Brentwood Alliance Against Measure L, to ensure the city protects both what makes their community

special and the Bay Area as a whole. Please vote “no” on Measure L, and help preserve the natural resource values that make Brentwood a great place to live, work, play, and retire. Amanda Brown-Stevens CEO, Greenbelt Alliance

Real benefits to Measure L

Editor: Measure L, on the November ballot, provides real benefits to the residents of Brentwood. Our members, hundreds of whom live in and around Brentwood, will benefit from the long-term union construction jobs that will be created with the passage of Measure L. The local hire provision in the development of this mostly senior community will ensure local residents are hired to build it. This means less time on the road commuting to and from work and more time to spend with their families. Measure L is also good for Brentwood businesses. Studies show workers on projects like this spend their money near the work site, contributing to the local economy. This senior community will have little impact on Brentwood’s traffic and schools, but will have a huge impact on the livelihood of Brentwood residents who work in union construction. That’s why our members support Measure L. Tom Hansen Business Manager/Financial Secretary International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 302

Attempting an unbiased look at Measure L

Editor: I have written numerous draft “Letters to the Editor” regarding the critical nature of Measure L, and why I not only strongly support it, but feel it is critical to the controlled growth of Brentwood as the city we all want it to be. Unfortunately, every time I wrote the letters, it was partially out of both anger and frustration over the false and misleading statements being made by the Alliance for a Better Brentwood. I found my letters sounded confrontational and angry, and that’s not how this issue should be addressed. The facts should stand for themselves, which is why I am writing this. Simply put, development of the area will occur. It is market-driven, and growth is required for internal improvements of our city to occur. So, the most responsible approach is to maintain control of that growth. Measure L allows Brentwood to retain control of the parcel and provides numerous upfront improvements and funding. What Measure L does not do is circumvent any of the development controls and processes that take place in any new project. Control of the project remains with the city staff, planning commission and city council. What a failed Measure L will do is almost certainly revert control of the property to Antioch. Please read the attached if you believe this isn’t likely. The information is unbiased and accurate. Thank you for your independent evaluation and your vote.

Standing up for Brentwood

Editor: Brentwood is a special place — this is why we love it so much. It is the home of the best farm-grown fruits and vegetables and the home to topranked schools for academics and sports. Brentwood has even been recognized as a top community for families to raise their children. The community has been blessed with planned growth that has improved the town and brought in exceptional people. Measure L plans to continue this tradition of building homes that support intelligent growth. The current measure has, however, created a divide in our community — something we all should pay close attention to. The potential amount of value added agricultural products and the buzz Brentwood has created in the past 20 years is amazing. Brentwood is one of the most powerful communities in the state of California, with its protected water rights accompanied by a natural flow line right into our farms. Children and even grandchildren raised here are coming back after college to start farms of their own and are in the beginning phases of generating programs to pass down to our elementary and high school students. The people who have developed Trilogy and Summerset communities with foresight have proposed to close out Brentwood’s western border with a beautifully planned community on currently unused dead land. Along with this, they have offered many amenities that would most likely not be offered by any other developer. If we say ‘no,’ Brentwood’s core foundation — our local people who built this town we live in and love — will be uprooted, and a new age of ‘divide and conquer’ will begin its course. The town we love so much today will begin to leave us in the days and years to come. I feel for all the people in Brentwood. It is one of the first conversations that have become “political.” The problem we have to answer is: Why now? Why, on the last important piece of the puzzle to protect Brentwood’s community forever, are people choosing to say so many negative things and using bullying tactics to influence newcomers to leave our back doors open? Why are people bad-mouthing local builders instead of serving as public servants or promoting activities to support what our public servants are fighting for? Who is behind going against our local people who have a proven track record of building beautiful communities and doing great things for Brentwood? Stand up for your public servants, farmers and leaders who have loved Brentwood for so many years. It is embarrassing to witness the bad-mouthing of community members who work at what is best for our town, instead of having a healthy, knowledgeable discussion to continue to support our beautiful community. Heritage girls volleyball atop BVAL standings by Patrick Gordon Correspondent

Heritage girls’ volleyball coach Janet Hannigan has been impressed with her team’s performance this year, as it sits atop the Bay Valley Athletic League, tied with rival Pittsburg. “It’s a different season for everybody in our league,” she said. “It’s been anybody’s game, and there’s been some exciting matchups.” Her Patriots have a 5-1 league record, with its only loss coming early this year to Pittsburg. This season has been a bit of a surprise to Hannigan, who noted her team doesn’t have any superstars, instead relying on teamwork and camaraderie to guide its success. “We have a lot of grit, a lot of hard work, and really great kids,” she said. “They’re nice to be around, they work so hard, so each season brings a little different vibe. It’s working for the girls, and they’re making it happen.” Last year, Heritage finished second in the BVAL, behind Liberty. Since Hannigan began coaching the team at its inception in 2006, they’ve won six league championships. The goal is to take another one home this year. “We’ve had a nice run,” said Hannigan. “We’re hoping to get another one. That would be great.” Hannigan said she was most impressed with her team when they played Pleasant Valley (Chico) at a tournament in Septem-

Her team lost in three sets, but they showed great potential against an extremely strong opponent. “They’re a very solid team, one of the top teams in northern California,” she said of Pleasant Valley. “This team came in with some very solid skill sets and very well coached, and they were in the championship of the tournament. I knew we’d have our

hands full. As it turns out, my team made adjustments and they were able to step up their game.” Despite the three-set loss, Hannigan said her team kept fighting, and that has been a trademark of this year’s team. The team’s goal is to make it to the playoffs, where the level of competition will produce new challenges.

“The NCS Division I is a pretty strong group this year, so I don’t know how far we’ll go,” admitted Hannigan. “We’ll see how we control the things that we can take care of. Unforced errors and making smart choices will definitely be some of the top things we can do.” To view a slideshow, visit www.thepress. net/multimedia/slideshows

Oakley couple to launch youth lacrosse program by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer East County youth will soon have another option when choosing which recreational sport to play. Oakley residents Johnny and Laurie Boone are launching a youth lacrosse program for boys and girls ages 8 to 14. “It’s really addictive,” said Johnny, a former lacrosse player and referee coordinator who’s turned to coaching and starting his own program. “Once you start playing, it’s hard to put your stick down.” The team game, which many describe as hockey on grass, involves players using longhandled, racquet-like instruments affixed with a mesh net to carry, catch and pass a ball to teammates and, hopefully, shoot into the opposing team’s goal. Johnny’s new Delta Breeze Lacrosse Club — formerly called the Delta Lax — is expected to feature three boys and three girls teams, all joining the around 50 club, US Lacrosse-sanctioned Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association. The Lax organization was a practice-only team. The sport encompasses elements of hockey, track, football, soccer and basketball, featuring lots of running, throwing and catch-

ing. Players burn energy, build up stamina, demonstrate finesse, gain coordination and have fun, all in an action-packed game, said Johnny, who noted that youth of all experience levels are encouraged to join. Fast runners typically excel, but crafty,

slick players also have their place. People not enthusiastic about moving fast can usually find solace in the goal, said Johnny, who said the game is easy to learn. “My granddaughter doesn’t like to run that much, so she has decided she’d like to

play in the goal,” he said with a laugh. It’s envisioned that the East County squads will practice twice a week, possibly at La Paloma High School in Brentwood, see Lacrosse page 22

Knightsen man wins gold in waterskiing championship by Patrick Gordon

Name: Kaily Speth School: Freedom High School Year: Senior Sport: Volleyball Coach: Elizabeth Rivas About: Kaily Speth, 17, picked up a volleyball in sixth grade and hasn’t put it down since. The Oakley resident and varsity player said she loves walking onto the court and keeps coming back for more. “I just love the feeling I get,” she said with a smile. “The anticipation of when we’re going to get a point, how we’re going to get that kill.” Kaily practices with her team throughout the week, and still finds time to fit in strength training and cardio to keep herself at peak performance. She also works on her skills at home with her mom, who coaches Freedom’s freshman volleyball team. In her spare time, Kaily volunteers at Kitty 911 Rescue and teaches young children to play volleyball.

Future Plans: At this point, Kaily plans to attend community college, then transfer to a fouryear university. “I want to major in nursing, and specifically be a pediatric nurse,” she said. “I hope to play in college.” Coach’s Quote: Kaily Speth, team captain, was unanimously chosen by her teammates,” said head coach Elizabeth Rivas. “She not only leads her team on the court, but off the court as well.” We can always count on Kaily. Her hard work ethic, trustworthiness, humility, reliability, has earned her teammates respect. She has a very bright and successful future.”

At age 57, Knightsen resident Jerry Kanawyer became the oldest person to win gold in the overall event at the U.S. Barefoot National Championship. The competition, which was held in August at Blue Moo Lake in Alma Center, Wisconsin, featured some of the best barefoot water skiers in the nation. Prior to Kanawyer’s win, the oldest person to win an overall championship had been 42. His championship was due in large part to his performance in the tricks portion of the competition. Kanawyer, who says he’s the only active competitor who can complete all three of the sport’s most challenging flips (inside a wake, outside a wake, and wake-towake), earned a perfect score for his tricks. “I am still the only one in the world right now to do all three flips,” Kanawyer noted. “There are six people who have done them before, but I’m the only one currently doing them.” According to www.Heeney.net, a site that compiles event results, Kanawyer also won the slalom portion. The third portion of the competition, the jump portion, is where he says he struggles the most. He finished behind two other competitors in the Men’s Open division there, but his slalom and trick performances were good enough to carry

and travel to three or four Bay Area locations per season for a day of tournamentstyle action, allowing teams to play multiple games each time. “We are so excited for this upcoming lacrosse season,” said Kelly Laubenheimer, whose son will be on one of the squads. “I think the goal of any athlete is to be able to compete with their peers, so it’s great these kids will have that opportunity this spring, thanks to the efforts of Coach Boone and his wife. Last year was my son’s first season and he fell in love, especially since it combines so many different aspects of other sports in one field. It is so fun to watch, too. It is non-stop action!” The Breeze joins a growing list of Northern California recreational squads, including teams in Stockton, Walnut Creek, Danville,

him to the overall win. This was the third straight year in which he won the tricks category and the fifth time in the past seven years. Kanawyer has been barefoot waterskiing for more than 30 years. He trains on Diablo Shores Lake. Right now, he’s preparing for a world championship even in Sydney, Australia, which will be held April 11-18 of next year. “I can’t really train in the winter time, but I can ski enough to stay in ski shape,” he said. “My plan will be going down to Australia a couple weeks early to get some skiing done there.” Kanawyer will compete as a member of the U.S. team. He’ll be focusing on tricks and slalom, his specialties. “When you’re on the U.S. team, you have to ski for the team and not yourself,” he explained. “So, I need to focus on tricks and slalom.” This will be the 21st time he has competed in the world championships. He has now competed in more world championships than anyone else in the sport. Although he has said he plans to retire at age 60, he’s showing no signs of slowing down yet. The game itself dates back to the days of Native Americans, and didn’t become a West Coast sport until about 20 years ago. Johnny is hopeful that youth participation in East County will eventually inspire the sport to blossom in local high schools — competing with the likes of De La Salle and Monte Vista. For girls, local college scholarship opportunities are also plentiful, with Cal, Stanford, Chico State and California Polytechnic State University all fielding National Collegiate Athletic Association squads. “It’s inevitable that it’s going to come out here,” Johnny said. “It needs to go now.” For more information or to sign up, visit www.dblax.com.

Cornerstone Christian eight-man football team is a dominant force The Cornerstone Christian Cougar football is on a 16 game win streak. The streak dates back to the 2018 season, when they went 9-0 and won the Pacific Coast League. This is Cornerstone’s third year in eight-man football. “We knew we had a special group of student athletes when the 2020 class was in junior high,” said Logan Heyer, head coach and principal at Cornerstone. “We just wanted them to stay for high school, so we could build a program around them. Five of these players are also on our NCS (North Coast Section) champion basketball team. We have created a great program for kids to come in and compete at a high level athletically.” The Cougars are currently 7-0 this season and ranked fifth in the state. They are led by a group of eight seniors who have played together for three years. They lost last year’s league MVP Michael Valle to a broken leg after game five but have not skipped a beat. Caed Miner and Matthew Broad have stepped up in Valle’s absence. In the first two games without Valle, Miner is responsible for 10 touchdowns, either running or passing, and Broad has rushed for over 300 yards. “We lose a dynamic player in Michael, but we are still a very physical team,” said Heyer about the loss of Valle. “It all starts with our offensive line, featuring seniors Malcolm Russel, Dominic Waldecker, Dom-

They do a great job of controlling the line of scrimmage, and our skill guys have some huge holes to run through.” The Cougars have already beaten last year’s NCS champions — Branson — and the runners up — South Fork — this year. The squad has been dominant on both offense and defense, scoring an average of 62

points, while only allowing 21 per game. “We play in a Central Coast Section league but will be eligible for the NCS playoffs this year,” Heyer said. “NCS just started a playoff for eight-man football last year. A wicked win The West Coast Wicked 04 girls continued with state cup play this past weekend hosting a familiar opponent in the Mavericks SC. West Coast boasts a 2-0 record in past meetings between the two teams. The Wicked showed great ball movement through out the team completely controlling the tempo and possession of play. Adrianna Martins received a pass, took a great first touch and launched a 35yard shot that ricocheted in the upper left corner of the goal. West Coast went into halftime with the 1-0 lead. The second half showed continued confidence on the ball as Indiana Stoneberger, Allyson Thompson, Andrea Castillo, MaryJane Anzo and Sabrina Rogers connected passes to midfielders Miranda Velle, Makeila Yancey, Alexi Ochoa and Madison Herrera. Offensive attackers Aryana Jones, Ella Ferrick and Zousette Zamora for

West Coast began to wear down the Mavericks defense as forward Kaya Scott injected fresh energy into the game, and the Wicked began to exploit the Mavericks’ back line. Scott assisted with two Gualco scores in the second half to give the girls a 3-0 lead. Gualco has been on a scoring rampage notching 8 goals in the last three games. Veteran player Yancey controlled the tempo of the second half, and defender Sabrina Rogers led the back line in keeping the Mavericks forwards off the board to give West Coast Soccer a 3-0 victory. “The girls did well controlling this game, our opponent has seen us a couple times recently so they really packed it in trying to keep it close, we knew that we would eventually wear them down and we did,” said Coach Dayak. Next up, West Coast Wicked will play their final State Cup first round group play game versus San Ramon FC. – Courtesy of the West Coast Soccer Club
