Locals adore Big Break Recreational Area and nearby Big Break Marina Big Break Regional Shoreline is a hit with Oakley residents year after year, and 2023 is no different. The park was awarded Gold for Best Place to Show a Visitor while its Big Break Recreational Area also won Gold for the Best View in Town. “Our location is incredible. We have a lot of biodiversity here within a pretty small space, so you can walk around the park and see birds, otters, muskrats, fish and all types of wildlife,” explained Supervising Naturalist Wyatt Moore. “The park is also incredibly accessible; we don’t charge parking or entrance fees. All of our trails are relatively flat, and most are paved. We really welcome everyone here.” The public park is open to those interested in birdwatching, biking, fishing and walking, while the visitor center has its own events and programs throughout the year, including youth learning programs every weekend, themed campfires on the second weekend of every month and larger celebrations on holidays like Halloween and the Summer Solstice. However, swimming in the Big Break is not permitted.

“What makes Big Break such a great place to visit is the community,” Moore said. “The visitor center is like a community center for Oakley, Brentwood, and beyond because the people here are really special and kind, and really care about this area.” The park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and the visitor center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. The Big Break Recreational Area offers a variety of ways for visitors to pass the time, from areas designed for picnics to scenic meadows that practically beg to have their photo taken. It boasts a small shaded amphitheater as well as boat and kayak launch facilities and a fishing pier. One of the most eye-catching elements of the Recreational Area is the Delta Discovery Experience. Dubbed an “interpretive landscape” by the East Bay Regional Park District, it uses a

1,200-square-foot interactive scale map of the Delta installed directly into the ground to give visitors the opportunity to see how water flows through the region. The map was designed, fabricated and installed by Scientific Art Studio, based in Richmond. Those looking to enjoy stunning waterfront views can do so along the Big Break Regional Trail, which runs along the southern edge of Big Break through the Ironhouse Sanitary District. The trail provides access for hikers, bicyclists, and riders on horseback as well as dog lovers taking their companions on a walk. The trail also connects to the northern end of the Marsh Creek Regional Trail, providing adventurers with access to both Oakley and Brentwood. Following that trail leads to the Delta de Anza Regional Trail via West Cypress Road, providing another point of access to Oakley and Brentwood as well as Antioch, Pittsburg, and Bay Point. The storage company looks for ways to give back to the community. Some of the organizations Oakley Self Storage sponsors include Girl Scouts, Pillars of Hope, Rotary Club of Oakley, East County League, Friends of Oakley, the Oakley Police Department and Relay for Life. “We also love being an active member of the community,” said Director Ryan Lorenzini. “We’re always finding ways to engage and participate with those in our community. That’s why they’ve won the category gold for the fourth year in a row in The Press’ “Best Non-Profit” Best of Oakley category. Past-president Thuy DaoJensen said the Rotary Club promotes service, integrity, peace and understanding, striving to benefit local residents. “We are humbled that Oakley residents recognize our community service and our partnership with local non-profits like Friends of Oakley to provide for families,” DaoJensen said. “We do not take anything for granted. I know it’s because our club members have strong fellowship and made a

commitment to live by the Rotary motto, ‘Service Above Self.’” Oakley Rotary was chartered in May 2019 with 26 members and has gained many new members since its inception. Members meet weekly, on Thursdays at 7 a.m., for breakfast at Black Bear Diner in Oakley. Prospective members are always invited to attend a meeting and see the club in action.
