Jeff Houston, the Village Community Resource Center and the Brentwood PONY Baseball League put together a community service project last week in Brentwood’s Guthrie Park, featuring baseball training fundamentals, a minibaseball game and barbecue. Each student received a baseball glove, bat, shirt, hat, clothes and food for the entire family. The idea was to promote the Brentwood PONY League to the children from the Village Community Resource Center, kids who might not have the means or access to baseball. The project is a brainchild of the community service projects that the Spanish class of Los Medanos College’s Dr. Laurie Huffman takes on every semester. PONY Baseball, the Cubs team and their families extended their hearts to improve the quality of life of disadvantaged children and their families by hosting a one-day baseball camp for the kids at Village Community Resource Center. (Spanish for baseball) camp hosted by the Brentwood PONY Pinto Jr. Champion Cubs. PONY President Mark Petures, along with local stores and Cubs parents, donated, jerseys, hats and equipment. The camp gave the Cubs an opportunity to teach other kids what they had worked so hard at all season.
Communication was no problem. As Houston put it, “Language was not an issue; everyone was speaking the same language: baseball!” And after the kids retired from the diamond, they enjoyed the classic baseball entrée – hot dogs – donated by CentrOmart stores and Cub parents.
