Audiences to feast on ‘Greater Tuna’ Two actors/quick-change artists play 20 hilarious characters from the Lone Star State’s third-smallest city in “Greater Tuna,” directed and co-written by Ed Howard, on stage at the El Campanil Theatre, 602 W. Second St. in Antioch. Performances take place Saturday, May 16 at 2 and 8 p.m. The show opens with the morning news report from the low-power radio station (275 watts) hosted by two slowtalking broadcast celebrities – Thurston Wheelis and Arles Struvie – who keep Tuna, Texas up to date on late-breaking news. The play quick-changes to the news
and crime scenes around town: Judge Buckner dies under mysterious circumstances, Vera Carp and her censorship club (the Smut Snatchers of the New Order) meet to censor the dictionary, town drunk R.R. Snavely spots a UFO shaped like a bean burrito, the Tuna Little Theatre performs “My Fair Lady” using the scenery and costumes from “South Pacific” and the town’s one-man Humane Society launches an urgent campaign to rescue homeless ducks. Simon and Garfunkel tribute performance A.J. Swearingen and Jonathan Beedle have been performing the music of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel at sold-out shows for more than a decade. Swearingen’s warm baritone and Beedle’s soaring tenor, accompanied by acoustic guitar, combine flawlessly to capture the essence and magic of the Simon and Garfunkel sound of the early years in Greenwich Village.
