Five seniors graduated from that team, and this season’s squad is comprised of players who have been under Molsberry’s tutelage for their entire high school careers. Her No. 1 singles player this year is a sophomore, Arlesha Sumuda. “She’s a very good player,” said the coach. “She has a whole game. She’s very solid, but she’s young. So I would give her another year. The maturity level helps a lot. It will definitely make her game a much higher level, but she plays at a pretty high level right now.” In the second spot is Roxanne Hopkins, whom Molsberry wishes she could clone. “She has a huge heart and a huge desire,” said the coach. “She’s fair but she’s intense. When she plays she plays. She brings everything she’s got to the game, win or lose.” Molsberry also singled out Elysia Cook, who was the team’s athlete of the month, not only for her tennis but for mentoring her younger sister in the sport. Seniors Megan Ward and Victoria Seyoum, Heritage’s No. 1 doubles team, were undefeated last season until they ran into a couple of singles players who were partnered up for the BVAL playoffs, according to Molsberry. “They were heartbroken because they went undefeated all season, and had to play two players they never played,” she said. “They are really good players and they are solid.” Despite the team’s strong start, the season is young, and Molsberry isn’t making any predictions. “We are just taking it as it comes and seeing what happens. We have two more rounds against each school, so anything could happen at that point. They are going to practice; we’re going to practice; you’re going to see kids get better. You have to just kind of play it by ear. I don’t make predictions because I’ve learned the hard way that those don’t tend to work out they way you think.” The loss dropped Deer Valley to 1-5 on the season. “It’s going as well as could be expected,” said Deer Valley Coach Brian Richardson. “Some of our girls didn’t commit to playing year-round like I would have liked them to. But, hopefully, we have a new crop of girls and they will take advantage of all opportunities that are offered here. I’m just hoping our girls enjoy the season. My biggest thing is for them to do the best that they can. I didn’t get a big enough commitment from them, but they are starting to come around. It’s a process, and I’m starting to build up girls and get them stronger and stronger.” Ironically, Richardson is also the personal coach of Heritage’s No. 1 player, Sumuda, so the meet’s top match was a win-win. “If I don’t have any gratification from what my girls here are doing, I have girls I have coached around the league that are doing well,” he said. “So as long as the league does well and we do a lot better at the North Coast Sectionals, it will please me more than anything.”
