Brentwood Parks and Recreation kicks off a fresh new set of kids’ art classes beginning Monday, Aug. 15. Taught by local artist Nancy Roberts, classes are held at the Brentwood Senior Activity Center, 193 Griffith Lane. Cartooning for Kids for ages 6 through 12 is set for Mondays, Aug. 15 through Sept. 26 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Aspiring artists will have serious fun designing and drawing their own fantastic comic book – creating a world, inventing characters and bringing them to life with jokes and storylines. The fee is $64.30 for Brentwood residents; $70.70 for non-residents, plus $10 for materials. Fashion Design and Illustration for ages 8 through 14 is set for Mondays, Aug. 15 through Sept. 26 from 5 to 6 p.m. Students will learn how to turn their ideas into professional-looking illustrations using a variety of media, techniques and presentation graphics. Projects cover drawing the face and figure, posing a model, garment structure and designing with fabric, pattern and color. The fee is $64.30 for Brentwood residents $70.70 for non-residents, plus $10 for materials. Discovering Art for ages 5 through 7 is set for Tuesdays, Aug. 16 through Sept. 20 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. In this class, kids create beautiful, colorful original artwork while exploring a wide variety of materials and themes. Age-appropriate art skills and concepts are introduced in a playful, encouraging setting. The fee is $64.30 for Brentwood residents; $70.70 for non-residents, plus $10 for materials. Fine Art Studio for ages 6 through 12 is set for Tuesdays, Aug. 16 through Sept. 20 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Kids will master new skills and express their creativity in this fun multi-media class. Media include pencil, pen, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, tempera, and acrylic paint on canvas. The fee is $83.80 for Brentwood residents; $92.20 for non-residents, plus $20 for materials.

Fly fishing An Aussie with more than 20 years of fly fishing experience in the wilds of Australia, New Zealand and the western United States, Damien Stopps has a passion for teaching fly fishing enthusiasts of all levels. Stopps will be stopping by REI Brentwood on Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. for a digital presentation on fly fishing for striped/black bass in the Sacramento/San Joaquin River Delta and for trout in several of Northern California’s premier trout rivers – the Lower Sacramento, the Yuba and the Truckee. Attendees can gain expert tips on gear, fly selection and presentation, reading water, casting techniques, optimal times of year to fish for certain species, catch-and-release ethics and how they can help support the health of California’s fisheries.
