Foothill Falcons bump Patriots in round two by Michael Dixon Correspondent

The Heritage and Berkeley baseball teams treated spectators to a fantastic opening-round battle at the recent North Coast Section playoffs. The Patriots advanced to the NCS second round on the strength of a last-inning two-out rally, winning 2-1. Heritage ace Cole Wells surrendered just one run, but when Heritage failed to score through six innings, its chances looked as gloomy as the overcast skies. And when Berkeley pitcher Matt Lawrence retired the first two Patriots in the seventh, their faint comeback hopes seemed all but gone. Packard was making a comeback from a broken jaw and had already hit two doubles on the day. After falling behind 1-2, Packard forced a full count and smoked a double to right-center field. That scored Heald-Mullins, who had stolen second and advanced to third on a passed ball, to tie the game. The dust had barely settled from the

Robert Pereira, running for Packard, headed for home. The cutdown throw sailed in high, Packard crossed the plate, the game was over and the Patriot’s death-defying comeback was complete. The velocity and placement of Wells’ fastball kept the game close enough to make the rally possible. He spread out eight hits over seven innings while striking out 10 and giving up one walk and one hit batsman. Berkeley had chances to bust the game

open in the fifth and sixth innings. Both times they loaded the bases with one out – and both times came away with nothing. Wells induced a double play to end the fifth inning and struck out consecutive hitters to end the sixth. “I pitched out of a lot of jams, said Wells. “I was hoping that we’d get the bats started a little earlier than that. So I had to pick up the slack to get out of a few jams, see Opener page 5B
