District’s fire marshal sworn in by Tony Kukulich

Bring On The Cherries

Staff Writer

When Steve Aubert was sworn in as the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD) fire marshal during a recent fire board meeting, he became the first person in the district’s 17-year history to hold that spot. “I think it’s a wonderful opportunity,” said Aubert. “I love our area out here. I consider it a fantastic opportunity, really, to come home. Like I said the other night, it’s very easy to do my job when I’m doing it to protect family, friends and neighbors that I’ve been living with for the last 17 years.” While Aubert is new to his ECCFPD role, he is no stranger to the area. A longtime resident of Brentwood, he spent 10 of his last 11 years as the Contra Costa see Fire Marshal page 30

A large crowd of family, friends and colleagues gathered for a photo after Steve Aubert was sworn in as the fire marshal/public information officer (PIO) of the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District during a ceremony at city hall in Brentwood, Wednesday, May 8. Fire Marshal Aubert brings to the district 20 years of fire service experience, most recently with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District where he served as a fire prevention captain and PIO.

Lions receive state championship rings by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

As the Liberty High School football team gathered at Harvest Park Bowl last week, many members couldn’t help but look down for long periods of time. It was for good reason. Their eyes were fixated on the sparkling new state championship rings gracing their fingers. The Lions, 2018 California Interscholastic Federation Division 1A state champions, picked up their commemorative jewelry last week — five months after winning the team’s first state title in its 116-year history. “I’m amazed,” said senior Reese Watkins-Nelson moments after receiving his ring. “I saw the size of it and was like ‘Oh, my God.’ It’s way bigger than the NCS championship ring. It’s beautiful, it’s absolutely amazing.” Harvest Park Bowl owner

Oakley celebrates cityhood anniversary by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

The City of Oakley is marking its 20th anniversary as a city and the public is invited to join in the celebration. On May 31, the town will host an elegant gala event at the new recreation center and invites all residents 21 and over to attend. “The next event is the gala . . . we suggest cocktail attire and we will be serving hors d’oeuvres from local restaurants,” said Lindsey Bruno, recreation manager for the parks and recreation department.

Bruno added that the evening will also include live music from the 925 Band and a nohost beer and wine bar. During the event, Oakley Mayor Claire Alaura will offer a champagne toast. “We look forward to celebrating Oakley’s 20th anniversary since incorporation,” Alaura said. “This gala is just one of the ways we are celebrating how far we have come as a city and I look forward to having a mar-

velous time with everyone.” Earlier this year, the city invited residents to paint tiles to commemorate the anniversary; the tiles will be placed in the new recreation center that opened in April. Events planned for later in the year include compiling a time capsule that will be opened on the town’s 50th anniversary and an event at the town’s new dog park. Details for these events have not yet been settled.

“What an outstanding opportunity to celebrate together our 20th anniversary,” said City Manager Bryan Montgomery. “Join us in a toast for the next 20 years of success.” Oakley’s 20th Anniversary Gala will take place on Friday, May 31, from 7-11 p.m. For more information, visit www. ci.oakley.ca.us/events/celebrate-oakley20th-anniversary-gala, call 925-625-7000 or email Bruno at bruno@ci.oakley.ca.us. Tickets cost $25 and can be purchased in person at City Hall or online.

Local cherries kickoff U-pick season The long-awaited cherry season is underway, with a limited number of orchards opening this weekend. “The crop looks really good,” said Mark Maggiore of Maggiore Cherry Ranch, #5 on the Harvest Time Farm Trail Map. “This weekend (May 17-18) will be primo for us.” Different varieties of cherries have different ripening times, so not all orchards will be open this weekend. A lot also depends on the cooler temperatures expected. “The weather coming up might slow down the crop,” said Jessica Enos of 5 Star Cherries, Harvest Time #48. Some orchards could open as late as early June. But the cooler temperatures could also mean there will be more cherries, said Joe Ghiggeri of G&S Farms, Harvest Time #11. “Cooler weather has helped and yields look better than they have been in

the last 7 years,” he said. “There should be plenty of cherries starting this week and at least thru June.” To stay up-to-date on which farms are open and what they offer, subscribe to the Harvest Time newsletter at www.harvestforyou.com. You can also download a copy of the 2019 Farm Trail Map. Harvest Time’s 2019 Farm Trail Map provides information on 60 farms, roadside stands, wineries and stores featuring local farm products. Printed copies of the map will be available at The Brentwood Press, Brentwood Park and Recreation offices, the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, and in numerous stores and restaurants. Alongside the Farm Trail Maps will be the new Better in Brentwood brochure listing 50 stores, restaurants, recreational opportunities in the Brentwood area. Tic Toc: clock could be next addition to city park Staff Writer

Longtime Brentwood Mayor Bob Taylor has previously guided efforts to resurrect an iconic gazebo and add a big red chair to City Park. Now he wants to ensure visitors know what time it is. Taylor is spearheading plans to explore adding a clock to the park. “I’ve had a lot of people ask what time it is,” said Mayor Bob Taylor, noting that he’s seen prominent parks in Ohio, Kentucky and Florida with similar nice structures, which would complement the recently opened Brentwood gazebo. City officials are early in the process of exploring Taylor’s idea, but his fellow councilmembers are at least open to the possibility. “I think a clock would be nice,” said Vice Mayor Joel Bryant. “I would like to know more about the cost of it, the placement of it and all that. But it would be very nice down there.” Taylor said he envisions an eight-feet-tall structure in a threeby-three feet square space. Although the precise elements — including the

Brentwood Mayor Bob Taylor location — still need to be hashed out, he said. “I’m not a clock placer; I’m a clock reader,” Taylor said with a laugh. The prospective time machine, which must be approved by the council, would be the third Taylorinspired addition to the downtown facility in recent years. Taylor had a gigantic chair constructed by Big Al’s Heavy Metal Furniture added to the park in late 2017, days before the annual holiday celebration and Christmas tree lighting ceremony, and he recently guided an all-volunteer effort to resurrect the City Park gazebo that was torn down during the 2007 park renovation.

City councilmember Karen Rarey didn’t shoot down Taylor’s idea, but noted that the park is quickly being filled up with various elements. “I am concerned about the number of amenities that we now have in the park,” she said. “I think we need to look at what area is out there, and the cost.” Bryant seemed to agree. “After the clock, we might want to consider that would be one of the final components to City Park, or we might not have any more room,” he said. Taylor noted that the time device won’t take up much room. “It would have a very small base. We are not talking about ‘Back to The Future,’” he said, referring to the clock in the Hollywood movie. Brentwood management analyst Gail Leech said she’s hopeful the item will be brought back to the council in about a month. “We are currently looking at locations and clock designs, because the design will be different based on location,” she said. “My hope is to bring the item back to council in a month to approve a location and clock selection.” To conment, visit www.thepress.net

Mother’s Day is more than a holiday Last Sunday was Mother’s Day. It was bittersweet for a lot of us who enjoyed spending time with family and friends, but missed our moms who are no longer with us. I, personally, had a wonderful weekend surrounded by loved ones and, Senior although I miss my orner mom very much, I felt her around me all day. While I was able to spend a lot of time with her, I regret not asking more questions that only she could’ve Marla answered about my Luckhardt early life. It started me thinking about some of the things I only have spotty recollections of and wished that I had asked her about. If only she would’ve written her memoirs or taken notes of our life story together. I headed into the garage where several boxes of hers remained, unopened. I knew there were pictures and other things in there that I’d eventually get to go through, but days had turned into weeks, then months and then years. I remember packing up a box and Grandpa marking it “Norma’s pictures” — a box I had hastily gone through a few times,

C

looking for a specific picture or two. I found a list of all of our relatives and ancestors written in her beautiful handwriting on a piece of paper! I hit the jackpot in a sense, and, just like the ads on television about finding your heritage, there it was in black and white, going back several generations on both her side and my dad’s. I still had questions, but this was something tangible, giving me a very warm feeling that, again, she’d reached out to me in her own way on this special day. As I dug further, I found an autograph book from my junior high school graduation, filled with silly poems and well wishes from my classmates, teachers and, yes, mom wrote in it, too. In a small box sat my tassel and diploma from high school and a medal for swimming (even though I came in last in the big summer race at the beach down the block from our house on Long Island). This little treasure chest brought back those time-buried memories and helped fill in some of the blank spots of my recollections. There were childhood projects, like a

story I wrote about my Washington trip in eighth grade, an attempt at a mosaic trivet made of broken tiles in the shapes of butterflies, numerous birthday cards made by my hand and hundreds of pictures. I also found a box marked “movie pictures” containing 16mm film that I will some day bring to someone who can put them on a drive for me to watch. My word, that sweet lady kept everything! To me she was Mom, but as I continued to look, I found many pictures and memorabilia from her life before me. I got to renew my already special relationship with her, but from a totally different perspective. The young girl, the teenager, the engaged 18-year-old, and the best part: her wedding album. I had seen it with her before, but going through it now, I got to look at many relatives I hadn’t seen in decades. Although they are all gone now, I enjoyed visiting with them once again as they danced and enjoyed a glorious wedding day for my mom and dad. Mom did indeed keep everything. Whenever the grandchildren or greatgrandchildren made an ornament, drew

everything. Whenever the grandchildren or greatgrandchildren made an ornament, drew a picture or wrote a card, she kept it.

a picture or wrote a card, she kept it. There was every school picture they took and every letter they wrote to her. Young moms today have what I call “forever pictures” on the internet and on something called “the cloud.” Digital pictures are forever and, although you may not be able to put those in a box, perhaps writing a diary or your own memoirs for your daughters and sons will avoid any mysteries for them in the future. I am so grateful for those boxes of hers and will finally start going through the rest. I’m ready. She truly loved and was loved. So happy Mother’s Day, Mom, and to all the moms out there who love and are loved. Marla Luckhardt is a Brentwood resident who works with senior care and advocacy groups. Driver of car that struck juvenile faces two felony charges KITCHEN STAGING

T

he driver of the car that struck a 14-year-old boy walking along Brentwood Blvd. near Fir Street Tuesday afternoon has been identified as 58-year-old Mark Maggiore, according to the Brentwood Police Department. Maggiore was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on two felony counts: suspicion of driving under the influence with injury and child endangerment. The juvenile was flown to Children’s Hospital in Oakland and is reported in stable condition. To view a video of the event, visit www.thepress.net/ multimedia

Besides the front view of the house, the next most important area to focus on when trying to sell your home is the kitchen. Remodeling can be quite expensive, but here are some tips that are more cost-effective. The biggest goal to shoot for is to be clean, de-cluttered and smell good. Get as much off the counters as possible to show off the counter space. Leave out just a few key items like an attractive knife set, glass jars of olive oil, a new dishtowel, fresh flowers and/or fresh fruit in a bowl. Bright yellow lemons in a bowl is a great touch. If you have attractive cookbooks you can leave one or two out. If you have an area where mail, bills, to-dos, homework, reminders, etc. live, clean that up to where it’s almost completely empty and leave one blank note pad with a pen across it. Toss the old sponges and leave out one new one with one attractive soap dispenser. Scrub everything to be extra-clean, including windows, and wipe down cabinets with orange oil or something similar. Be supersensitive to smells and ask a friend to come

over to do a smell-test. Remove visible trash cans and thoroughly clean and de-odorize any cans behind cabinets. One trick is to leave a cut lemon near your trash. If you aren’t doing a full interior paint job, consider painting just the kitchen if needed. If your cabinets are outdated, painting them can be cheaper than replacing or refinishing. Check your sink and faucet. If the sink is scratched and faucet is worn, consider replacing one or both. It may be possible to have most porcelain sinks re-glazed for around $400 to $600. If all of the above is taken care of, then you can devote some time to organizing the pantry. Thin things out so it’s not cluttered and either clean the shelves or do touch-up paint. Age in Marriage and Divorce When it comes to marriage, many people wonder if age really matters. Is there an ideal age for marriage? For divorce? There is no right or wrong answer to any of these questions. However, there are some factors and studies that can be applied to these questions. Age Gaps in Couples According to the New York Post, the bigger the age gap, the shorter the marriage. “A five-year age gap statistically means you’re 18 percent more likely to divorce (versus just 3 percent with a one year age difference), and that rate rises to 39 percent for a 10-year age difference and 95 percent for a 20-year age gap.” Can Age at Marriage Predict Divorce? The Institute for Family Studies blog discusses the research showing that

young couples marriages typically end in divorce more so than older couples, however there is also a rise in divorces for couples who wait until later in life to marry. Regardless of these studies, successful marriages succeed when they are built on open communication skills and maturity. Older Couples Marital conflict can happen at any age. Gray divorce has become very common in recent years – in fact, it has more than doubled since 1990. Despite all this information around marriage, divorce and age, there are no rules when it comes to the right age or the right time. Do what is right for yourself. Enjoy a sweet time at the county fair by Dawnmarie Feh Correspondent

The Contra Costa County Fair is at the Antioch Fairgrounds through Sunday, May 19, bringing with it some sweet surprises. In its 83rd year, the fair will be pulling out all the stops to celebrate this year’s theme: a sweet adventure. “We are doing some sweet feature food items with our food vendors for fair goers to check out,” said Joe Brengle, CEO of the Contra Costa Event Park. “And a new event this year is the Wild West Turkey Stampede Races.” In addition to the races, other new events include K9 Kings Flying Dog Show and a Bruno Mars tribute band, called Uptown Funk. Some returning favorites are the trackless train, Flo the clown, and the fuzzy and loveable BC Characters. Visitors will also have a variety of show choices, the livestock pavilion to visit, as well as carnival rides and games, auto racing and a bird show. “We are excited with our theme this year and feel that we are going to have a great fair,” Brengle added. “We invite everybody to come out and have a great day.” A big part of county fairs are the exhibits, where locals of all ages can display projects they’ve spent months working on. Ranging from livestock and agriculture, to art and quilting, these projects represent hard work and commitment from their creators. A senior at Liberty High School, Maverick Dean is a

This year’s event runs through Sunday, May 19. three-year member of Future Farmers of America (FFA) and will be selling his Hampshire swine, “Roast Malone,” at the fair’s junior livestock auction. “The fair has really helped me become a good leader and boost my confidence,” Dean said. “Last year, I got second place in showmanship and sixth in market. It was exciting and I really surprised myself.”

Dean added that his work in the FFA program at Liberty has inspired him to become a veterinarian. He plans to attend Los Medanos College in the fall and later transfer to UC Davis. The Knightsen 4-H club is also up for the fair. The oldest 4-H program in the state, its members flock to the fair each year in hopes of taking home a blue ribbon. Knightsen School District Superintendent, Harvey Yurkovich, said many of his students miss school the week of the fair, so he and his teachers decided to bring the classroom to them. “One of our teachers, Susan Dutra, was at the fair Tuesday through Friday,” Yurkovich said, adding that Dutra held class in the mornings, conducting lessons and helping with teacher-provided homework. Yurkovich hopes that, rather than just missing out on learning opportunities, this schedule will allow students to get their class time in the morning and animal care time in the afternoon. On Friday, the 4-H students will have the chance to show off their projects to the district’s younger students. All first and second graders from the district are going to the fair for a field trip on Friday morning and will stop by the 4-H exhibit. The Contra Costa County Fair will run Thursday, May 16, to Sunday, May 19. Hours are noon to 9:30 p.m., daily. The fairgrounds are located at 1201 W. 10th St. in Antioch. For more information on tickets, exhibits, rides, shows and everything else the fair has to offer, call 925-757-4400, or visit www.ContraCostaFair.com.

Dear East Bay Community... My name is Olivia Shelton. I am a Junior at Liberty High School. I am Vice President of Brentwood FFA. I will be auctioning my Market Lamb on Sunday May 19, 2019 at the Contra Costa County Fair in Antioch. My Grandfather, Lloyd James Glieden passed away on May 7, 2019 at 82 years young. “Poppo” raised me and led me to my love for animals and ranching. I would not be where I am today without this man in my life. Lloyd fought a swift battle with Mesothelioma… a cancer caused from being exposed to asbestos fibers in the Pleura Lining of the lung. This year, I will be donating 100% of all funds I receive through sponsorship donations and auction monies to the “Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation” in honor and loving memory of this great man who lost his life too soon. My hope is to help the many others battling this painful disease in search of one day finding a cure. Please stand with me to celebrate my grandfather’s life and offer a tax deductible donation to help others who are fighting this disease. Please contact me if you wish to donate or want to come to the Fair Auction to purchase my lamb.

Hannah Drake

July 27, 1992 – May 7, 2019 Hannah was born to her loving parents, Michael and Ann Bennett, in San Diego, on July 27, 1992. She joined two big brothers, Nathan and Austin. The family moved to La Mesa, where her little brother, William, was born. The family then moved to Brentwood in 1999, where her father was the children’s pastor at Golden Hills Community Church. As a girl, Hannah loved to play Barbies, read books, eat spaghetti and pester her brothers. As she grew up, she stopped playing Barbies. On May 14, 2005, Hannah’s father passed away of a sudden heart attack. The family was forever changed and through the struggle, the family leaned on God and impacted many lives. While at Liberty High School, Hannah started dating Joseph Drake. She played varsity tennis and enjoyed participating in musicals and plays at school. All the while, she stayed involved with church activities. She graduated in the top 10 of her class and went on to attend the University of California at San Diego, where she graduated with her bachelor’s degree in human development and a minor in mathematics. While in college, Hannah was also very involved at Clairemont Emmanuel Baptist Church, where she went as a child, Intervarsity student ministries, and the mock trial team, but her favorite thing was to spend time with her beloved roommates and many, many friends. In 2014, Hannah married Joseph and the two moved to Enid, Oklahoma, for their first Air Force assignment. After that, the Air Force sent them to New Mexico and Rapid City, South Dakota, where they

bought their first house. In Rapid City, Hannah worked as an administrative assistant at Hart Ranch. She absolutely loved the job and loved her co-workers even more. In March 2018, Joseph and Hannah took Hannah’s dream vacation to England. They visited Hannah’s top two attractions – the Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens and Jane Austen’s house. Shortly after that trip, Hannah and Joseph found out they were pregnant with a baby girl. On Jan. 3, 2019, Hannah delivered a beautiful baby girl, Grace Michael, into the world. Hannah was always very open about the difficulties of being a new mom and she tried to encourage others as they endured struggles of their own. Throughout her life, no matter where Hannah went, she always kept connected to her friends across the country and around the world. She was a notoriously good gift-giver and party-thrower. She was also an avid board game aficionado and nerdy joke-teller. She always put others before herself and gave generously. She would always make sure that she was the awkward one in the group, so that no one else had to be. Her love for her friends was unconditional. Above all else, Hannah was a fervent believer and follower of Christ. Her relationship with God was evident in how she lived her life and in how she loved others. Hannah is survived by her husband, Joseph, and 4-month-old daughter, Grace Michael. Hannah also leaves behind maternal grandparents, William ‘Bill’ and Ruth Anne Sharadin of Benbrook, Texas; stepdad and mom, Dave and Annie Atkinson of Turlock, California; brothers, Nathan Bennett of Beijing, China, Austin Bennett of Irvine, California, and William Bennett of Brentwood; and step-brothers, Steve Atkinson of Lynden, Washington, and Todd Atkinson of Portales, New Mexico. On Joseph’s side, she leaves behind GreatGrandma Heinert of Vacaville, California;

Where Should I Store My Estate Planning Documents? by Joan M.Grimes, Esq. and Jennifer L.Wallis, Esq. Should I store my original estate planning documents in my safety deposit box? Home safe? Filing cabinet? The right answer will depend on you and your particular situation. First, regardless of where you decide to store your original documents, it is essential that you tell your appointed agents (successor trustees, health care agents or power of attorney) where your original estate planning documents are located. Although this seems like a no-brainer, I have spent hours with families searching clients’ homes looking for their original estate-planning documents. After you are gone, they will need the original documents (not copies). Here are some of my thoughts in determining your ideal storage location: Safety Deposit Box: Generally, we do not recommend clients store their original estate-planning documents in their safety deposit box, because they can be difficult to access. If you choose to store your documents in your safety deposit box, please consider doing the following: 1) Tell your appointed agents where your safety deposit box is located. 2) Appoint your agents as authorized users, so they can access the safety deposit box. Also, keep in mind that if there is an emergency and the bank is closed, your appointed agent will not be able to access your documents until the next day. Home Safe: Many families want to keep their estateplanning documents in their home safe. If you choose to do so, make sure your appointed agents know the combination or where to find the combination or key. Filing Cabinet: For our seniors, we generally recommend clients store their original estate-planning documents in a filing cabinet in their home office or with their other important documents. However, many clients worry their estate-planning documents contain sensitive personal information that may be stolen or that the original documents could be destroyed in a fire or flood.

Here is my response to these concerns: 1) Most estate-planning documents I review do not contain sensitive personal information. The documents generally only include the distribution scheme and do not include account numbers, account balances or your social security number. (You should review your documents first to ensure they do not include highly sensitive information.) 2) If your original documents are destroyed in a fire or flood, you can execute another copy. At our office, we give our clients their original documents, and we store an electronic copy. If the documents are destroyed or lost, we re-print the documents and have our clients sign again. If you were to perish in the fire or flood that also destroyed your documents, we could do a simple court petition to confirm the validity of a copy of your documents. (You should confirm with your attorney that they have an electronic copy before relying on this information.) To summarize, we strongly encourage you to first tell your appointed agent where your original estateplanning documents are stored and how to access them. Additionally, we generally encourage our clients to store their documents in their home with their other important documents so their appointed agents can access them quickly and easily. If you have any questions, I see people Monday through Friday, for a free, 30-minute consultation in my Walnut Creek and Brentwood offices. Tips to make your home more cat friendly Millions of people cannot imagine life at home without their cats. Cats make wonderful pets, bringing their own unique personality into a home and providing companionship to their owners. As great as cats are, millions still enter animal shelters every year. According to the ASPCA, roughly half of the 6.5 million companion animals that enter U.S. animal shelters each year are cats. While figures are thankfully on the decline, hundreds of thousands of those cats end up being euthanized. Local animal shelters are home to many cats that would make great pets, and prospective cat owners are urged to visit such shelters to find cats that would make welcome additions to their homes. For those who find cats to take home, the following are a handful of ways to make a home as cat-friendly as possible. • Take stock of appliances that pose as safety risks. Certain appliances pose potentially significant threats to cats’ safety. For example, International Cat Care notes that open washing machines or tumble dryers, particularly those with warm clothes inside, may be too tempting for cats to ignore. Unsuspecting homeowners may close the doors to washers and dryers, trapping cats inside, or even turn the appliances on without recognizing the cats are inside. Always keep doors to such appliances closed, and check

Pet of the Week THE PRESS

to make sure cats are not inside before using these appliances. Paper shredders and work stations with lots of wires also pose a safety risk to cats, so make sure these appliances and areas are inaccessible. • Watch how cats behave around cat flaps. Some cats respond positively to cat flaps, while others do not. Cat flaps also may invite other cats into a home, which can upset your cat and make it vulnerable to attack. While some cats may want the freedom a cat flap allows, others may be on edge around the cat flap. Let cats’ behavior dictate if you will keep the cat flap or not. • Watch how cats drink water. International Cat Care notes that the presence of water near food may deter some cats from drinking enough fluids. That’s because cats naturally hunt for food and water separately. Some cats may be fine if food and water are in the same bowl, but if you notice your cat is ignoring its water bowl, try placing it elsewhere in the home to ensure your cat gets enough fluids. • Provide high, safe resting places. Cats want to rest and observe their surroundings from on high. Don’t deter cats from resting in such places, but make sure they’re positioned in such a way that cats can safely get down when they want to. Cats make wonderful pets, particularly when welcomed into cat-friendly homes. – Courtesy Metro Creative

Unified Prom a success

Editor: On May 4, 2019, I was honored to drive a student in my car to participate in the Unified Prom parade. The positive excitement and energy was overwhelming. The event created independence, dignity and equality for much of our community. Every citizen including youth, parents, families, business owners, sponsors and spectators simultaneously provided both pride and humility. We shared in an event where there were only winners … no losers! We should all thank Liberty Union High School District, Brentwood Police Department, Police Athletic League as well as every sponsor and participant who shared in the love and effort for the success of this event. This is Brentwood at its finest. Emil Geddes Working Wonders Board Brentwood Union School District Board Proud citizen of Brentwood

to the

Editor: Blackhawk-Nunn ran a full-page ad in the Brentwood Press touting how the money their project will put towards the fire district will help make us safer. Please read the text of the initiative to see the truth for yourself. Page 1, section 5 of the initiative states, “Development of the Specific Plan Area will also be required to pay fire facilities fees and, based on the current fee schedule, buildout of the Specific Plan Area will generate approximately ($2 million) in new funding for the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District.” ($2 million) trickling into the system over 20 years will not help keep us safer. Think about it. This is enough to buy less than three houses in Shadow Lakes. We have been told it takes $17 million a year to adequately provide coverage just for Brentwood. Over the course of 20 years, that

is $340 million. ($2 million) is less than 0.6 percent of what it would cost to protect this city and provide emergency services, yet this project expands the city size by 11 percent. The real truth is that adding houses makes our situation worse. The fees do not cover the added responsibilities the new houses place on the fire district. The reason for this involves a rural allocation imposed on our ever more urban fire district. How that all works is complicated to explain, but please just consider this – Brentwood has consistently been one of the fastest-growing cities in California. If building more houses were the way to fix the problems with the response times, we would have no problem. Instead, it seems the more houses we build, the worse the problem gets. So, in direct contradiction of the developer’s claims, this project will not improve our fire safety issues. It will make them worse. Rod Flohr Brentwood

Development ads deceiving Editor: What a load of bull in the Vineyards at Deer Creek ad. Create jobs? Not long-term, stable jobs, just short-term construction. Address traffic? By adding more commuters to already-congested roads. Senior community where people stay home all day? (Being 55 or older) doesn’t mean you’re a stay at home invalid. Most people work well into their 60s. Millions of dollars for fire services? Try $2 million spread over the entire 20 years the project is proposed to take. Is this what Brentwood really needs? Is this what Brentwood really wants? Blackhawk-Nunn is trying to sham and shill their way into 20 years of profit at the expense of a small town. Adam Vreeland Brentwood

Patriots advance in baseball playoffs by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

Heritage High School sophomore pitcher Christian Machado was nervous taking the mound for his first playoff start Tuesday. But he was probably the only one who could tell. The lefty threw six shutout innings, and the Patriots offense broke through in the first and fourth innings to secure Heritage’s 4-0 win over Freedom High School in the first round of the North Coast Section baseball playoffs. “I think our pitcher was working so hard they wanted to take the pressure off of him a little bit, which they ended up doing,” said Heritage head coach Kevin Brannan of his team’s hitters. The sixth-seed Patriots (19-6) will travel to third-seed Acalanes (23-2) May 17 at 5 p.m. Heritage infielder Tom Rover (two for three at the plate) drove in two runs, scored another, and racked up two of the team’s five hits. Machado (1.70 ERA in 33 innings pitched this season) took care of the rest from the mound, scattering two hits and striking out six in his longest outing of the year. “I was a little bit nervous, but once I got through that first inning, it was good,” said Machado, who struck out the side in

Heritage starting pitcher Christian Machado snags a comebacker during the Patriots 4-0 win over Freedom on Tuesday in the first round of the North Coast Section playoffs. Machado threw six innings of shutout ball and struck out six in the win. the first inning. Freedom junior pitcher Brian McBroom went the distance in a solid showing, surrendering three earned runs on five hits, a walk and striking out two. But a passed ball in the

first and four fourth-inning hits, including a bunt, ended up grounding the 11th-seed Falcons, who finish the season 14-11. Rover was the Falcons’ nemesis the whole game. He led off the bottom of the

first with a double, and later scored on a passed ball to put the Patriots up 1-0. He also smacked a two-out single to center in the fourth, scoring Gavin Tonkel and Bryce Arana, extending Heritage’s lead to 4-0. “I got the fastball down the middle and just went with it,” he said of his fourth-inning at-bat. “I kept with my swing and stayed through the ball.” McBroom and the Falcons could have avoided Rover’s fourth-inning at-bat, but Ryan Troye slid under the catcher’s tag on Tonkel’s bunt, which put Heritage up 2-0 and brought the on-deck Rover to the plate. “I think the bunt play was huge,” Brannan said. “It allowed us to get our top-of-theorder back up there.” Freedom’s Colby Lane and Ryan McKinley were the lone Falcons to muster hits off the masterful Machado, but Freedom never advanced a runner beyond second base. Heritage’s Ryan Jackson pitched a perfect seventh inning for the Patriots, striking out one to secure the victory. Heritage now shifts its attention to third-seed Acalanes, who outlasted 14thseed Dublin 1-0 in nine innings. To view a slideshow, visit www.thepress. net/multimedia/slideshows

BVAL track and field stars move on to NCS meet by Michael Dixon Correspondent

The East Bay’s top track and field stars met in Dublin over the weekend for the North Coast Section (NCS) Tri-Valley Championship. Every Bay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) school had athletes finish well, and four events were won by BVAL athletes. Oakley’s Freedom High School senior Giovanni Larrea won the boys long jump with 22 feet, 1.5 inches. Pittsburg athletes won the remaining three events. Senior John Maka won the boys discus (178-06), Gabriella Serrianni won the girls shot put (39-00.00), while the team of Aqeelah Hasim, Ariane Nelson, Elaija Danridge and Trinity Bolden won the girls 4x100 relay. Overall, the Tri-Valley Championship was a good one for the Pirates. The girls tied for first in the team event, while the boys came in fifth. Pittsburg finished in the top eight in all eight relays. Dearen Idahosa, Willie Harts III, Jonzi Smith and Jalen Adams finished second in the boys 4x100 in 42.83 seconds, Chaison Wesley, Clarence Strong, Lamont Fortenberry and Jorden Fletcher finished sixth in the boys 4x400 (3:29.78), while Danridge, Sharon Amoah, Anaya Block and Bolden took eighth in the girls 4x100 (4:10.68). Nelson, the sophomore, took second in the 100 (11.96), third in the 100 hurdles (15.76) and fifth in the 300 hurdles (48.65). Bolden, her junior relay

In addition to her shot put win, Serrianni finished fifth in the discus (106-08), one spot ahead of her teammate, senior Fianna Logoleo Tasi (106-01). Adams took fourth in both the 100 (11.05) and 200 (22.66). Junior Jonzi Smith took third in the 110 hurdles (15.41), Premier Murphy was sixth in the long jump (20-

10.75), Willie Harts III was sixth in the 200 (22.75), and Nicholas Moseley was seventh in the 300 (42.44). For Heritage, the standout performer was senior Ingrid Neukirchen. She took seventh in the girls 100 (12.28), 200 (25.45) and, along with Jayden Sanders, Morgan Wakefield and Jenna Walton, took eighth on the 4x100 relay (50.33). The girls 4x400 relay team of Lauren Lane, Jenna Walton, Sabrina Rog-

ers and Kaya Scott also finished strong, taking seventh place (4:07.77). The boys 800 meter was a strong event for the Patriots. Junior Gabriel Preciado finished in fourth (1:57.43), while sophomore Robert Foreman took sixth (1:58.83). Senior Kidest Befikadu finished sixth in the girls high jump (4-10.00), and junior Travis Simmons took eighth in the boys long jump (20-05.25). Beyond Larrea’s long jump win, the Freedom boys had a handful of solid finishes. Larrea was seventh in the triple jump (4200.00). In the discus, junior Jacob Hawkins finished third (152-09), while fellow junior Ty Seligman was eighth (137-11). Liberty sophomore Akili Calhoun was between them in fourth (148-04). Freedom Freshman Kylee Denver also finished fourth in the girls 800, while Liberty junior Cody Muth was eighth in the boys 400 (51.31). Antioch sophomore Jailen Weaver contributed to the strong BVAL finishes in the boys’ discus, taking second (157-06). He was also runner-up in the boys shot put (48-00.50). Juniors Jayson Wade (11.09) and Ahmon Jones (11.1) took sixth and seventh, respectively, in the boys 100 and, along with Brandon Canty and Aaron Lacy, finished fourth in the 4×100 relay (43.19). Deer Valley senior Patrick Robinson finished fifth in the boys long jump and senior Jordan Pringle was seventh in the boys shot put (45-07.25). Season ends for BVAL golfers by Michael Dixon Correspondent

The best golfers of the Bay Valley Athletic League (BVAL) were at Monarch Bay in San Leandro on Monday, May 13, competing in the North Coast Section (NCS) Championship Tournament. While they performed well, the season came to an end for everyone involved. Brentwood’s Heritage High School was the lone BVAL team at the NCS tournament. The quintet of Jonathon Hydorn, Arman Bajwa, Carson Borrelli, Chris Azevedo and Drake Sparling all broke 90, and gave the Patriots a score of 410. The 410 was good enough for 12th place out of the 21 teams. But only three teams advanced to the NorCal Championship Tournament. De La Salle came in first place with a 364, Amador Valley was the runnerup at 378, while Foothill came in third at 382. In addition to the team competition, all of the Patriots, as well as Deer Valley’s Kael Hoang and Freedom’s Jacob Waller were in the running to advance as individuals. The four top individuals from

nonqualified teams also advanced to the NorCal Championship Tournament. Unfortunately for the league golfers, the top four was also a very difficult group to crack. Vintage’s Jacob Aaron led the way with a 70, while Baron Szeto from Campolindo and Mason Stenberg from Las Lomas earned the next two spots, with each shooting a 71. Redwood Christian’s Moses Greene and Dougherty Valley’s Jacob Ponce both shot a 72 to tie for the fourth and final spot. Green eventually won that spot in a tiebreaker. Hydorn’s 78 was the best individual score among not only his team, but all BVAL individual players at Monarch Bay. Teammates Bajwa and Borrelli finished just behind him, recording a 79 and 80, respectively. Rounding out the Patriots were Azevedo, who shot an 84, and Sparling, who carded an 89. Matthew Tan added a 94, which was dropped from the team scoring. Hoang shot an 80 while Waller, who was the individual runner-up at the previous week’s NCS qualifier, came in with an 86.

A golden star

Crosley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Brentwood’s 8-year-old student Olivier Marti (second from left), who’s been training for less than a year, recently submitted all his opponents at the American Jiu-Jitsu Cup on May 4 at Independence High School in San Jose. Olivier’s success is no surprise. He’s dedicated to not only his regular classes, but he attends other extra curricular activities such as seasonal training camps and private lessons. “Olivier possesses above average attendance, is very focused and has a great positive attitude when entering the mat to attend his classes,” said the owners of Crosley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Brentwood in a statement. “His success isn’t a surprise to us. Hard work paid off for this little guy!”

I see a better future with that than swim.” Coach’s Quote: “Brandon has been such a great athlete to coach,” said Vancil. “His hard work and determination have led him to achieving the goals he set out to achieve this swim season.”

Impact squad scores on the pitch Impact’s 05 Black girls’ team capped off a strong Players North Spring Cup soccer tournament with a 1-0 victory over the Atwater Night Hawks to win the championship last month. Playing up from a bronze bracket in a silver bracket, the 05 Black girls faced two silver teams in one day, winning 3-2 against the hosting Players North team in the morning. Starting out slowly, the team gave up two first-half goals, but rallied in the second half to score three times while shutting down the aggressive Players North offense. Later, they faced a strong Boise Thorns team. As in the first game, the squad fell behind 1-0, only to strike out with two second-half goals for the win and first place in the bracket. The next morning pitted the team against the gold-level Atwater Night Hawks. The girls fought well, but had no answer for the speedy play of the Atwater outside attack. Impact 05 Black fell 3-0 to Atwater but wound up second in the standings, putting them through to the finals and a rematch with Atwater. Coaches Joel Lopez and Kevin Peltz adjusted their strategy and moved their strongest defenders on the backline. Atwater was unable to penetrate the defense of Macie Jarquin, Julia

Bremhorst, Hailey Garvin and Kasey Williams as well as strong support off the bench. Any shots that managed that did get through were quickly swallowed up by goalie Cate ‘No Goal’ Toal. Impact’s offense struggled with a formidable Atwater defense, and many shots just missed the mark wide or were corralled by Atwater’s goalie. With a few

minutes remaining, Megan Dickinson took a pass from Katelyn Peltz, drove the ball up the middle and made a brilliant pass to winger Anecia Newhouse. Anecia fought off an attack by an Atwater defender and chipped the ball just out of reach of the Atwater goalie. Cheers erupted as the ball dropped into the net, giving Impact 05 Black

team a 1-0 lead and the eventual win. The impact team is comprised of Aubrey Brambley, Julia Bremhorst, Megan Dickinson, Audrey Dunn, Elisia Frias, Michelle Garcia, Hailey Garvin, Macie Jarquin, Taya McComb, Victoria Mendoza, Anecia Newhouse, Jordan Ozuna, Katelyn Peltz, Cate Toal and Kasey Williams.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Discovery Bay CSD OKs pool design by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent

The Discovery Bay Community Services District (CSD) Board voted last week to pay $43,000 to Terracon Aquatic Design for a new pool design. The vote came at the end of a meeting that saw more than a dozen residents offer their opinions to the board during its public comment period. Some comments expressed support for the proposed six-lane, competitive swimming pool intended to enable the town to offer classes and a place for others to swim, including the town’s 110-member recreational youth swim team. Others expressed frustration that the community center is draining the town’s budget dry, and that the money should be spent in a more diversified fashion on landscaping,

maintenance and upgrades throughout the town. CSD newcomer Bryon Gutow read a prepared statement asserting that he felt the actual cost of a pool would far exceed the town’s budget of $1.4 million, and that the money could be better spent elsewhere, such as on “... planned and needed capital improvement projects, as well as maintenance projects that cannot be ignored.” Gutow made a motion to repair the existing pool rather than spend thousands on a new pool design. His motion was defeated, with directors Robert Leete, Bill Pease and Bill Mayer voting nay, and Kevin Graves abstaining. Mayer later defended the idea of spending $52,000 on a pool design, saying that the actual bid could come back below the current estimate of $1.4 million.

“ Fifty-two thousand is a

lot to spend, but it can save us a lot if the results tell us what we need to know.

CSD Director Bill Mayer “Fifty-two thousand is a lot to spend, but it can save us a lot if the results tell us what we need to know,” Mayer said. “We don’t know, in fact, that the results of the design could be lower.” Terracon’s original aquatic design fee totaled $52,500, but CSD directors asked that a $10,000 construction management fee be removed from the cost, as no construction will be managed during the design process. County Fire Protection District (ConFire) fire inspector, assigned to cover East County. “His institutional knowledge is second to none when it comes down to fire prevention, investigations and also inspections within our jurisdiction — our community,” said ECCFPD Fire Chief Brian Helmick. “I can say as a fire chief that our organization became a whole lot smarter last Wednesday.” ConFire has performed inspection duties for the district since ECCFPD’s inception in 2002. After the 2016 Ghost Ship fire in Oakland, ConFire put added emphasis on inspections within their district, and they opted to not renew the contract with ECCFPD. The contract expired in late 2018, and the obligation reverted to ECCFPD. With that change, Chief Helmick and the fire board began their search for a fire marshal. Inspections are currently managed by a contract with a private firm and that will continue until ECCFPD hires its own fire inspectors. In remarks made before Aubert’s swearing-in ceremony, Helmick said that the search for a fire marshal was not taken lightly, and that a large number of candidates, including some from out of state, were considered for the role. The initial pool of candidates was reduced to 16, then eight, then three, until Aubert was finally selected. “The process was hard,” said Helmick. “It was very competitive. It was great to find out that Steve Aubert got the final nod at the very end. By no stretch, again, was it handed to any one person. This process was very challenging and very hard.” The role of the fire marshal focuses on three main responsibilities: inspection of existing structures, inspection of new construc-

Rings from page 1 Liberty head coach Ryan Partridge, who admitted that he had snuck a peak at the rings when they arrived earlier in the week, said he consulted with a couple of the team’s captains on the ring design. The group settled on gold, since their similar 2017 North Coast Section Championship jewelry was silver, and Partridge snuck a corn cob into the design, representing the team’s signature saying, “Corn country travels well,” which pays homage to the season-long

also asked for some other minor changes to the contract. In the end, the board voted 3-2 to authorize staff to negotiate a design contract with Terracon, not to exceed $43,000. Directors Gutow and Graves voted against the motion. Terracon is already familiar with this project: the town paid them $32,650 earlier this year to conduct a geotechnical study to see whether a new pool could be built in place of the existing one. Terracon first provided the $1,122,000 estimate for a six lane, L-shaped pool. If signed, this new contract will give an actual engineered design and firm cost. If the pool comes in at budget, the town plans to pay $820,400 with monies received from the Hofmann Land Development Company settlement, and $570,740 through a 10-year-long loan from the town’s wastewater funds. tion and conducting fire investigations. The volume of new-construction inspections can vary with the economy, but Aubert said there are approximately 200 buildings in the district that require an annual or biennial inspection. These include structures such as schools, hotels and residential care facilities. “We don’t want our inspectors to feel like, ‘Hey, I’ve got to get to a certain amount,’” said Aubert. “It’s a matter of doing a quality inspection and taking as much time as it needs. Being an inspector out here for 10 of my last 11 years, I know pretty much how long it takes it for each type of those inspections and occupancies. I’m very fortunate that I have covered out here for so long and know exactly what it’s

going to take to fill those gaps.” Fire investigators are sworn peace officers capable of making arrests and recommending charges to the district attorney. They work closely with other law enforcement agencies, and Aubert said he has already met with the Brentwood and Oakley police departments and the sheriff’s office to discuss what his role will bring to fire-related criminal investigations. “We’ll go into a scene if fire has been involved and we’ll do our origin and cause investigation,” explained Aubert. “Then we’ll write a supplemental to (the police agency’s) overall report. For the district attorney to prosecute arson or a big charge, like attempted murder, they

need the origin and cause supplemental report coming from the fire side of the house. It’s kind of working hand-in-hand with each other.” A career-day presentation convinced Aubert that a life in fire service would be a good fit, taking advantage of his love of working with his hands and working outdoors. He entered the fire academy at age 19 and spent several years as a volunteer before landing a spot working at Onizuka Air Force Station. Aubert was the fire chief there when the base closed. He moved to ConFire as a fire inspector, with the added benefit of working much closer to home. “My last year there, I was a fire prevention captain put in charge of the code enforcement unit for all of the existing occupancies. I was one of their public information officers (PIO) for seven of my last 11 years there. I covered everything from Mt. Diablo being on fire, to plane crashes, to residential fires and everything in between.” That experience will come in handy as Aubert will also serve as the district’s PIO. During Aubert’s swearing in ceremony, Helmick talked about the importance of family support. Judging by the large crowd of family, friends and colleagues who attended the event, there appears to be little risk that family support is in short supply in the Aubert home. “From firefighter on the peninsula to fire chief in the Air Force, then to fire inspector once his base closed, to fire captain and now to fire marshal, he has made our motto, ‘adapt and overcome,’ a reality, and we all adore him,” said Aubert’s wife, Jana. fans that cheered the squad to victory. “I was just blown away (when I first saw them),” Partridge said. “To see ‘State Champions’ on a ring. You only dream of that. It’s a surreal experience.” Many other players agreed, vividly remembering the team’s scintillating season months ago. The Lions roared to an undefeated 10-0 regular season and 13-1 overall mark — outscoring their opponents 557-195 — their only loss coming to national powerhouse De La

Salle in the North Coast Section championship game. Liberty bounced back from that December defeat with a 33-21 win over Valley Christian and then a magical come-from-behind 19-17 win over Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) in the state title game. “We said it the whole time, that we were going to make it to the state championship,” McKey remembered Saturday, his eyes still glued to his ring. “We made that our only goal. I think by doing that, by focusing and

working hard, we were actually able to make it happen.” While the squad basked in the figurative glory that only a state championship season can provide, Partridge was quick to point out that opportunity awaits — the Lions began spring ball on Tuesday. “I want (the rings) to say ‘Back-to-Back Champions’ after next season,” Partridge said with a smile.
