Harlesden’s Liz Mitchell of the legendary disco, reggae group Boney M is celebrating 50 years in the entertainment industry. We caught up with her to discuss inspiration, happiness and the influences of Brent on her life.
Tell me about when you first came to Brent and what life was like back then. How did your early environment influence your career? I travelled from Jamaica as a child to join my family in 1964. We lived in Harlesden NW10 and I started school in September of that year. It was quite a change to what I was used to, but I soon adapted to life in Brent. Learning the ways of my new school friends and the values of my family. Your performances are known to be fun and energetic. How important is music as a vehicle for bringing people together and making them happy? Music has the power to take your mind off things that are disturbing you and can help people in ways they can’t imagine. Music brings people together in sadness as in gladness. It’s healing and freeing. It is one of the main sources of happiness. Can’t live without it. You’ve been entertaining for 50 years. How do you remain consistent and passionate about what you do? Music is true. I love music. I love people. I love sharing. Now I’ve been performing for 50 years music is still true. It is my truth. I am grateful that I have had such a long time on the stage. Thanks to the fans. A lot of your songs are Christmas classics. What does this time of year mean to you? Christmas is very important time of the year; a time for sharing and caring for each other. I am happy that our music plays such a big role in the Christmas season. I will be performing my reggae Christmas show through live stream on 21 December, singing ‘Mary’s Boy Child’ and more hits. You’ve been hugely successful in your career. If you could give one piece of advice about pursuing a passion, what would it be? Choose something you enjoy and can endure. For me I enjoy sharing and giving, so the problems I encountered in show business didn’t harm me (even though they could have). Whatever your dream is, you will have to endure and exercise patience with love.
