Vorwort Am 24. Oktober 1850, dem Tag seines ersten Düsseldorfer Konzerts, beendete Robert Schumann ein „Concertstück für Violoncell mit Be­gleitung des Orchesters“, wie es in der autographen Partitur, im Haushalt­buch1 und im sogenannten Pro­jektenbuch2 heißt. Seiner Frau Clara erschien dieses in einer Phase schöpferischer Euphorie entstandene Werk, entgegen einem heute bisweilen immer noch anzutreffenden Vorurteil, „besonders so recht im Cellocharakter geschrieben.“ Sie bestätigte dies in einer Tagebuchnotiz vom 11. Oktober 1851: „Die Romantik, der Schwung, die Frische und der Humor, dabei die höchst interessante Verwebung zwischen Cello und Orchester ist wirklich ganz hinreißend, und dann, von welchem Wohlklang und tiefer Empfindung sind alle die Gesangstellen darin!“3 Doch gelang es Schumann zunächst nicht, einen Interpreten oder Verleger für das Cellokonzert zu finden. Nach einer ersten Probe mit Klavier am 23. März 18514 wandte sich der Komponist im Okto­ber 1851 an den Frankfurter Cellisten Robert Emil Bockmühl (1820 oder 1822–1891), der jedoch trotz zunächst geäußerter flammender Begeisterung auch nach seiner im Frühjahr 1852 erfolgten Über­siedlung nach Düsseldorf bis 1853 immer neue Ausflüchte fand, das Konzert nicht öffentlich spielen zu müssen. Seine gut gemeinten „Verbesserungsvorschläge“ hat der Komponist mit Ausnahme der Tempomodifikation des ersten Satzes von ursprünglich „5 = 144“ (Autograph) auf „5 = 130“ (Erstdruck; Bockmühl hatte „5 = 96 – höchs­tens 5 = 100“ vorgeschlagen!) vollständig ignoriert. Der Verfasser technisch schwieriger, aber musikalisch seichter Virtuosenstücke für Cello konnte und wollte Schumanns Konzept, in dem das Solo­instrument nicht immer dominiert und das Orchester wesentlichen Anteil am musikalischen Geschehen hat, nicht verstehen. Bockmühl hat schließlich wenigstens die technische Einrichtung der Solostimme für den Druck (Bögen, Fingersätze) übernommen, jedoch auch hierbei nicht immer glücklich operiert.5 Am 1. November 1852 wandte sich Schumann an den Leipziger Verleger Friedrich Hofmeister: „Das Concert für Violoncell […] ist jetzt druckfertig“, verlangte als Honorar 24 Louisdor („so billig wie möglich“) und meinte hoffnungsvoll: „Anderentheils glaube ich, daß gerade, da so wenig Compositionen für dies schöne Instrument geschrieben werden, der Absatz ein den Wünschen entsprechender sein wird.“6 Hofmeister lehnte aus Kostengründen ab, und Schumann versuchte es am 14. September 1853 bei dem kleinen Verlag Carl Luckhardt in Kassel, erhielt aber wieder eine Absage.7 Schließlich bot der an Kummer gewöhnte, aber stets geduldig und zielstrebig vorgehende Komponist das Werk am 3. November 1853 dem Verlag Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig an: „Das Violoncellconcert ist vielleicht auch etwas, das, da es an solchen Compositionen sehr mangelt, Manchem erwünscht kommen wird. Auch dieses Concert ist ein durchaus heiteres Stück.“8 Zu Schumanns großer Freude wurde es diesmal sofort akzeptiert. Schon am 15. November schlug er vor, „ein Saitenquartettarrangement, in das die obligaten Blasinstrumentstellen eingeschlossen würden“, auszuarbeiten, d. h. also eine Fassung mit reiner Streicherbegleitung, wie sie bei Klavierkonzerten bis zur Mitte des Jahrhunderts gebräuchlich war, worauf der Verlag allerdings nicht einging.9 Unklar ist, ob damals oder schon vorher die Idee einer besser verkäuflichen Alternativfassung des Konzerts für Violine anstelle des weniger verbreiteten Violoncello geboren wurde. Vielleicht wurde sie durch die inspirierende Begegnung Schumanns mit dem genialen jungen Geiger Joseph Joachim angeregt, in dessen Nachlass in der Hamburger Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek erst 1987 eine als Stichvorlage angelegte Kopistenabschrift der Violinstimme mit autographen Eintragungen (Stichnoten, Dynamik) gefunden wurde. Zwei Notizen auf dem Titelblatt des Manuskripts – „Dies Concert ist auch für Violine transscribirt erschienen“ und „Der Schluß noch zu rectificiren“ deuten darauf hin, dass Schumann die inzwischen im Konzertsaal erfolgreich erprobte Alternativversion einem Verleger anbieten wollte. Die geschickt gemachte Einrichtung der Solostimme beschränkt sich auf eine Transposition um eine Oktave, an wenigen Stellen auch um zwei Oktaven nach oben sowie

notwendige Ver­änderungen bei Doppelgriffen, vor allem in der Kadenz des dritten Satzes, während der Orchesterpart un­verändert bleibt.10 Am 15. Februar 1854 schickte Breitkopf & Härtel einen Revisions­abzug des Cellokonzerts,11 von dem zunächst nur der Klavierauszug und die Orchesterstimmen erscheinen sollten. In der Nacht vom 17. zum 18. Februar 1854 kam es dann zu jenem furchtbaren Aus­bruch von Schumanns Krankheit, die sich vor allem in quälenden Gehörshalluzinationen äußerte. Clara Schumann gibt darüber einen erschütternden Bericht: „Die Ärzte brachten ihn zu Bett, und einige Stunden ließ er es sich auch gefallen, dann stand er aber wieder auf und machte Korrekturen von seinem Violoncellkonzert, er meinte dadurch etwas erleichtert zu werden von dem ewigen Klange der Stimmen.“12 Diese Korrekturen wurden am 21. Februar,13 sechs Tage vor dem Selbstmordversuch, an den Verlag zurückgeschickt, sodass das Konzert im August 185414 in einer vom Komponisten autorisierten Form erscheinen konnte. Eine Partitur wurde erst 1883 im Rahmen der alten Schumann-Gesamtausgabe (Serie III, Nr. 2) publiziert.

Auch nach der Publikation verlief die Rezeption des Cellokonzertes äußerst schleppend. Die einzige bisher nachweisbare Rezension in der Neuen Berliner Musikzeitung vom 17. Januar 1855 von dem Geiger und Komponisten Karl Böhmer (1799–1884) ist gerade durch ihr vollkommenes Unverständnis gegenüber Schumanns Tonsprache sehr aufschlussreich. Zwar attestiert er dem Konzert „viel Schönheiten“ und „eine ernste, würdige Ruhe“, findet aber, dass es „etwas selt­same Harmoniefolgen“ enthielte und vor allem als „Concertstück“ zurückstehe. Auch ließe es „sehr oft etwas Unbefriedigendes fühlen, so dass der Spieler weder diese [gemeint sind die Fantasie für Violine op. 131 und das Cellokonzert] noch sich selbst so recht zur Geltung bringen kann.“ Er zweifelt am öffentlichen Erfolg des Werkes und befindet, dass „am wenigsten … eine Production mit Pianobegleitung zu rathen sein [dürfte].“15 Kurioserweise konnte erst vor kurzem mit einiger Sicherheit geklärt werden, wann und wo die Uraufführung von Schumanns Cellokonzert stattfand. Häufig wurde, wenn auch mit Vorbehalt, auf ein Konzert am 9. Juni 1860, zur Feier von Schumanns 50. Geburtstag, im Leipzi­ger Konservatorium mit dem „groß­herzoglich oldenburgischen Kammermusikus“ Ludwig Ebert (1834–1908) hingewiesen.16 Wie aus zwei kurzen Zeitungsberichten17 eindeutig hervorgeht, hat bei dieser „Musikalischen Abendunterhaltung“ jedoch kein Orchester mitgewirkt, wie bisweilen behauptet wurde.18 Von einer wirklichen „Uraufführung“ kann somit bei einer Darbietung mit Klavierbegleitung nicht die Rede sein.

Bisher waren als erste sicher bezeugte Aufführungen mit Orchester nur diejenigen am 10. Dezember 1867 in Breslau (mit David Popper) und am 14. Dezember 1867 in Mos­kau (mit Bernhard Cossmann) bekannt, also 13 Jahre nach Erscheinen des Werkes.19 Neuere Nachforschungen ergaben, dass Ludwig Ebert das Cello­konzert mit der „Großherzoglichen Hofkapelle“ Oldenburg unter der Leitung des Konzertmeisters Karl Franzen in einem Konzert am 23. April 1860 spielte.20 Zuvor war er mit dem Versuch, das Konzert mit Orchester aufzuführen, an dem Oldenburger Hofkapellmeister August Pott (1806–1883) gescheitert, der das Werk als „widerwärtig, greulich und langweilig“ ab­getan und eine Aufführung abgelehnt hatte.21 Obwohl weder in Voranzeigen noch in der Rezension der Oldenburger Zeitung vom 1. Mai 1860 von einer Uraufführung die Rede ist, dürfte dies die früheste Aufführung des Stückes mit Orchester sein.

Erstaunlich bleibt aber die Hellsichtigkeit und das große Verständnis, mit dem ein anonymer Rezensent in der Oldenburger Zeitung vom 1. Mai 1860 über Aufführung und Werk berichtete: „Herr Ebert hatte sich durch die Wahl des Cello-Conzertes in A moll von Schumann eine Aufgabe gestellt, welche ihm an sich, wie durch die Art ihrer Lösung zu großer Ehre gereicht. Ein Solist kommt nur zu leicht in Versuchung, sich dem Geschmack des größern Publikums zu accommodiren und mehr auf sog. Dankbarkeit, als auf innern Werth der vorzutragenden Stücke zu sehen. Dies Schumannsche Concert ist aber weit davon entfernt, Concessionen zu machen, sei es dem Publikum oder dem Spieler, sondern ist wie die spätern Concerte Beethovens, die Mendelssohns u.s.w. ein symphonisch gehaltenes Tonwerk, in welchem dem Soloinstrumente nur eine bevorzugtere Stellung vor

den andern Instrumenten des Orchesters eingeräumt ist. Nach einmaligem Hören ist es unmöglich, ein eingehendes Urtheil über ein solches Werk abzugeben; indessen glauben wir doch behaupten zu können, daß es eine sehr werthvolle Bereicherung des an wirklich guten Werken sehr armen Repertoirs für das Cello ist und sicher noch ein in Concerten oft gespieltes Werk werden wird, wenn die Cellisten sich erst auf den Standpunkt derjenigen Künstler gehoben haben, welche mit Stolz das Beethovensche oder Mendelssohnsche Violin-Concert vortragen. – Das fragliche Concert schließt sich in seiner Form der bisher gebräuchlichen dreitheiligen an. Für den Solisten scheinen der zweite und dritte Satz die ‚dankbarsten‘ zu sein, doch verlangen sie auch einen Spieler, welcher das ‚Phrasiren‘ versteht und seinem Instrumente einen großen Ton zu entlocken weiß. Obwohl Herr Ebert in diesen Beziehungen noch nicht allen Anforderungen genügen konnte, zeigte sein Spiel doch unläugbar große Fortschritte und einen regen Fleiß in seiner Fortbildung. Zur vollen Wirkung kann das Concert aber auch dann nur kommen, wenn das Orchester der Sache eben so mächtig ist, wie der Solist. Daß dies heute nicht der Fall war, möchte weder dem Dirigenten, Herrn Concertm. Franzen, noch dem Orchester zur Last zu legen sein, da das Concert, wie wir hörten, für das Studium in den Capell­proben nicht würdig befunden ist und zu dieser Aufführung wohl schwerlich genügende Proben abgehalten werden konnten. – Die übrigen Leistungen des Orchesters waren alle lobenswerth, und wollen wir hoffen, daß Herrn Ebert wie dem Orchester durch eine Wiederholung des Concertes im nächsten Winter Gelegenheit gegeben würde, dem Werke Gerechtigkeit widerfahren zu lassen.“22 Erst gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts setzte sich Schumanns Cello­konzert als Repertoirestück durch. Der Hinweis des Komponisten auf seinen heiteren Charakter wird allerdings bis heute von vielen Interpreten durch verschleppte Tempi und sentimentales Rubato ad absurdum geführt, ebenso die formale Anlage nicht verstanden. Der ursprüngliche Titel Concertstück, der durch die nahtlosen Über­gänge zwischen den drei Sätzen gerechtfertigt ist und zugleich den „sinfonischen“ Anspruch reduziert, sollte genügen, dieses Werk nicht mit dem Klavierkonzert op. 54 in derselben Tonart zu vergleichen, sondern viel eher mit dem Konzertstück F-dur op. 86 für vier Hörner und Orchester vom Frühjahr 1849, mit dem es in mancher Hinsicht (Satzfolge und Charakteristik, Taktart und Tempo des dritten Satzes) verwandte Züge trägt.

Im ersten Satz („Nicht zu schnell“) mit seinem weit ausschwingenden melodischen Hauptthema und dem durch charakteristische Intervalle (Sekunde, Septe) hervorgehobenen anmutig verspielten Seitenthema sind die kantablen Möglichkeiten und alle Lagen des Soloinstruments wirkungsvoll genutzt. Viele Passagen werden nur von den Streichern, manchmal in Art eines Rezitativs, begleitet, die Holzbläser, ganz selten auch Hörner und Trompeten, setzen markante thematische Akzente hinzu.

Der zweite Satz („Langsam“) wächst unversehens aus dem letzten Tutti hervor, das von einem allein dem Orchester vorbehaltenen Thema beherrscht wird. Als Brücke dient ein harmonisch verfremdetes Zitat jener plagalen Wendung, die schon als „Vorhang“ dem ersten Satz vorangestellt ist und später den Kopf des ersten Themas im dritten Satz bildet – ein weiterer Beleg für Schumanns subtile Kunst der zyklischen Verklammerung. Die lyrischen Qualitäten dieses Satzes sind selbst von hartnäckigen Schumann-Verächtern nie ernsthaft bestritten worden. Durch das Hinzutreten eines zweiten Solocellos entsteht die Illusion mehrstimmigen Akkordspiels. Eine Reminiszenz an das Hauptthema des ersten Satzes im Orchester wird vom Soloinstrument aufgegriffen, wieder verdrängt und mündet in ein dramatisch erregtes Accompagnato-Rezitativ. Eine kurze Kadenz des Cellos führt mitten hinein in das Finale („Sehr lebhaft“). In diesem technisch überaus heiklen, von kapriziöser Laune sprühenden Rondo spielen sich Solist und Orchester meist ohne große modulatorische Bewegung das thematische Material in ständigem Wechsel zu, was nicht nur den verhinderten Interpreten der Uraufführung offensichtlich irritiert hat. Vor der kurzen Schlussstretta in A-dur steht eine vom Orchester begleitete Kadenz des Soloinstruments. Es ist ebenso überflüssig wie geschmacklos, hier noch eine zusätzliche Kadenz einzufügen, wie es leider viele Cellisten getan haben oder noch tun, da die wohlabgewogenen Proportionen des Konzerts dadurch empfindlich gestört werden.

Die vorliegende quellenkritisch-praxisorientierte Neuausgabe basiert auf dem noch von Schumann überwachten Erstdruck der Stimmen und des Klavierauszugs. Zusätzlich wurde das Partiturautograph zum Vergleich herangezogen; eine Stichvorlage ist bisher nicht nachweisbar. Über Einzelheiten der verwendeten Quellen und die editorische Um­setzung informiert der Revisionsbericht. Auf die Wiedergabe der in der beigelegten Cellostimme des Erstdrucks enthaltenen Fingersätze von Bockmühl und der wahrscheinlich von ihm stammenden erleichterten ossia-Fassungen23 wurde verzichtet. Empfehlend sei in diesem Zusammenhang auf den Klavierauszug EB 8597 verwiesen, der eine von Heinrich Schiff eingerichtete und kommentierte Solostimme enthält.

Preface Robert Schumann completed his “Concert Piece for violoncello with orchestral accompaniment” – as he called it in the autographic score, the Haushaltbuch1, and the Projektenbuch2 – on 24 October 1850, the day of his first concert in Düsseldorf. His wife Clara felt that the work, which Schumann composed during a phase of euphoric creativity, was “written in a way that is most befitting to the cello’s character”, an opinion which refutes a prejudice that is still often voiced today. She underscored her view in a diary entry of 11 October 1851: “The romanticism, the spirit, the freshness, the humor, and then the fascinating interweaving of the cello and orchestra – all this is truly thrilling.

What’s more – the harmoniousness and profound feeling which fill all the songful passages!”3 Nevertheless, Schumann had little luck in finding either a performer or a publisher for the cello concerto. After a first rehearsal with piano on 23 March 1851,4 the composer called on the Frankfurt cellist Robert Emil Bockmühl (1820 or 1822–1891) in October 1851. But in spite of his initial excitement and eagerness, Bockmühl kept finding new excuses not to have to play the concerto in public. Even after moving to Düsseldorf in spring 1852, he kept wavering until the following year. Schumann completely ignored the “improvements” which Bockmühl well-meaningly suggested, save for the tempo change of the first movement from originally “5 = 144” (in the autograph) to “5 = 130” (in the first edition; Bockmühl had sug­gested “5 = 96 but no more than 5 = 100”!). Bockmühl, a composer of technically demanding but musically shallow virtuoso pieces for cello, could or would not understand Schumann’s concept. For in this work, Schumann does not always let the solo instrument predominate, but also gives the orchestra a substantial share of the musical activity. Bockmühl was ultimately entrusted with the technical preparation of the solo part (bowings and fingerings) for publication, but here too his efforts were not always crowned with success.5 On 1 November 1852, Schumann wrote to the Leipzig publisher Friedrich Hofmeister: “The concerto for violoncello […] is now ready for publication”. He requested an honorarium of 24 louisdor (“as inexpensive as possible”) and added brightly: “On the other hand, I feel that you will not be disappointed by the sales precisely because there are so few works for this lovely instrument.”6 Hofmeister declined the piece out of financial considerations. Schumann obtained another rejection from the small publishing house of Carl Luckhardt in Kassel, to whom he had offered the work on 14 September 1853.7 Familiar with distressing situations but always full of determination, the composer finally offered the piece to Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig on 3 November 1853: “Since there is a great dearth of such works, the cello concerto is something which will perhaps be welcomed by many. The concerto is also really quite a jolly piece.”8 To Schumann’s great joy, the publisher immediately accepted the work. As early as 15 November, Schumann was already proposing “a string quartet arrangement, in which the obbligato wind instrument passages would be incorporated”, i.e. a version accompanied solely by strings, as was customary with piano concertos until the middle of the century. The publisher turned down this offer.9 It is unclear whether it was at this time or earlier that Schumann began to consider the idea of a violin version of the concerto, which would have a greater sales potential than the original version for the less widely played cello. Perhaps the idea arose from the composer’s inspiring encounter with the brilliant young violinist Joseph Joachim. A scribe’s copy of the violin part with autographic additions (cue notes, dynamics), which had been foreseen as an engraver’s copy, was found in 1987 in Joachim’s estate, preserved at the Hamburg Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek. Two hand-written comments on the title page of the manuscript – “This concerto has also been issued in a transcription for violin” and “The close must still be corrected” – signalize that Schumann wanted to offer the alternative version to a publisher, now that it had successfully proven itself in the concert hall. The skillfully made arrangement of the solo part is limit­ed to a transposition of either one or, rarely, two

octaves upwards, as well as to changes necessitated by double stops, particularly in the cadenza of the third movement. The orchestral part remained unchanged.10 On 15 February 1854, Breitkopf & Härtel sent Schumann proofs of the cello concerto for revision11.

Only the piano reduction and the orchestral parts were to be issued at first. Then, in the night of 17 to 18 February 1854, Schumann’s illness erupted in a devastating out­burst, plaguing the composer with auditory hallucinations. Clara Schumann gave a gripping report of this terrible night: “The doctors put him to bed, and he gave no resistance for a few hours. Then he got up again and started making corrections in the cello concerto, feeling that this might relieve him of the interminable sound of the voices.”12 These corrections were returned to the publisher on 21 February,13 six days before Schumann’s attempted suicide. The concerto thus appeared in August 1854 in a form authorized by the composer.14 The score was not published until 1883, as part of the old Schumann Complete Edition (Serie III, No. 2).

Even after the work was published, the concerto was extremely slow to gain acceptance. The only ascertainable review – it appeared in the Neue Berliner Musikzeitung of 17 January 1855 and was written by the violinist and composer Karl Böhmer (1799–1884) – is very revealing precisely because of its total mis­understanding of Schumann’s musical language. Although it ascribes “many beautiful moments” and “a serious, dignified tranquillity” to the work, the reviewer feels that it contains “some rather curious harmonic progressions” and, above all, that it does not come off well as a “concert piece”.

He adds that one could “often feel that something is amiss, that the performer can give satisfaction neither to them [the Fantasy for violin op. 131 and the cello concerto] nor to himself.” The reviewer doubts that the work will achieve success among the public and believes that “a performance with piano accompaniment is hardly to be recommended.”15 Surprisingly enough, it has only recently been established with a fair amount of certainty when and where the first performance of Schumann’s cello concerto took place. A concert held in the Leipzig Conservatory to celebrate Schumann’s fiftieth birthday on 9 June 1860 was often mentioned, though with reservations. The performer at this event was the “Chamber Musician of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg” Ludwig Ebert (1834–1908).16 However, it emerges very clearly from two short newspaper articles17 that no orchestra was involved in this “Musical Evening Entertainment”, as had previously been claimed.18 One can thus truly not speak of a genuine “world premiere” if the work was played solely with piano accompaniment. Until recently, the first ascertained performances with orchestra were those held in Breslau on 10 December 1867 (with David Popper) and in Moscow on 14 December 1867 (with Bernhard Cossmann), thus 13 years after the work was published.19 Thanks to recent research, we now know that Ludwig Ebert played the cello concerto with Oldenburg’s “Grand-Ducal Court Orchestra” under the direction of the orchestra’s concertmaster Karl Franzen on 23 April 1860.20 Ebert’s previous efforts to have the concerto performed with orchestra had run aground on the Oldenburg court Kapellmeister August Pott (1806–1883), who dismissed the work as “disgusting, horrible and boring” and had refused to perform it.21 Although there is no mention of a world premiere in any of the advance notices nor in the review printed in the Oldenburger Zeitung of 1 May 1860, this must have been the earliest performance of the piece with orchestra.

The astuteness and profound empathy with which the anonymous reviewer of the Oldenburger Zeitung reported about the work and the performance on 1 May 1860 are still amazing today: “By choosing Schumann’s cello concerto in A minor, Herr Ebert set himself a task which did great credit to him and to the way he accomplished it. It is all too easy for a soloist to succumb to the temptation of accommodating himself to the taste of the broad public and of aiming to ‘ingratiate’ himself among the public instead of revealing the inner qualities of the work in question. However, this Schumann concerto is far from making any concessions, either to the public or to the soloist. Like the later concertos of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, etc., it is a symphonically fashioned work in which the solo instrument only enjoys a more privileged position than the other instruments in the orchestra.

It is impossible to give a thorough judgment of the work after hearing it played only once; but we do feel justified in claiming that it is a most valuable addition to the cello repertoire, which is truly poor in genuinely good works, and that it will doubtless often be played in concerts when cellists finally come to accept the viewpoint of those artists who proudly perform the Beethoven or Mendelssohn violin concerto. The form of the concerto in question follows the three-movement pattern customary to this day. The second and third movements appear to be the most ‘rewarding’ for the soloist, but they require a performer who understands ‘phrasing’ and can draw a full tone from his instrument.

Although in this respect Herr Ebert was not able to do justice to all of these requirements, his performance unmistakably evidenced signs of great progress and much diligence in his training.

The concerto can only make its full impact, however, when the orchestra is as proficient as the soloist. The fact that this was not the case today is not to be blamed either on the conductor, Herr Concertmaster Franzen, or on the orchestra. For as we have heard, the concerto had not been found worthy of study during the orchestral rehearsals, and the piece was hardly given a proper number of rehearsals for this concert. The orchestra’s other achievements are all deserving of praise, and we can only hope that Herr Ebert and the orchestra will be given the opportunity to do justice to the work by giving a repeat performance of the concerto next winter.”22 Schumann’s cello concerto only began to make its breakthrough as a repertoire piece towards the end of the 19th century. The composer’s reference to its jolly character is still often absurdly undermined by interpreters who drag the tempi and add sentimental rubati, and who simply do not understand the formal layout. The original title Concertstück – not only is it justified by the seamless transitions between the three movements, but it also reduces the “symphonic” dimension – should suffice to preclude comparisons with the Piano Concerto op. 54 in the same key. It is more fitting to compare it instead to the Konzertstück in F major op. 86 for four horns and orchestra of spring 1849, with which it shares a number of traits (sequence of movements and characteristics, meter and tempo of the third movement).

The first movement (“Nicht zu schnell”) boasts a broadly sweeping, melodic principal theme and a gracefully ornate secondary theme enhanced with characteristic intervals (second, seventh). It makes effective use of the vocal possibilities of the solo instrument, as well as all of its registers.

While many passages are accompanied only by the strings, sometimes in the style of a recitative, striking thematic accents are added by the woodwinds and, though rarely, by the horns and trumpets. The second movement (“Langsam”) evolves quite unexpectedly from the last tutti, which is dominated by a theme stated exclusively by the orchestra. A bridge is created by a harmonically distorted quote of the highly plagal turn that had been placed at the opening of the first movement as a kind of “curtain” and which later constitutes the head of the first theme of the third movement. Here again, we have another example of Schumann’s subtle art of cyclical interconnection.

The lyrical qualities of this movement have never been seriously contested, not even by the most virulent Schumann haters. The entrance of a second solo cello gives rise to the illusion of multivoiced chords. A reminiscence of the main theme of the first movement in the orchestra is taken up by the solo instrument before it is toned down in order to lead to a dramatic, agitated recitativo accompagnato. A short cello cadenza leads right into the midst of the finale (“Sehr lebhaft”). In this technically very tricky rondo, which is bursting with capriciousness and temperament, the soloist and the orchestra toss the thematic material between themselves in steady alternation and generally without much modulatory movement – an exchange that dismayed not only the would-be interpreter of the world premiere. An orchestrally accompanied cadenza of the solo instrument precedes the short closing stretto in A major. It is just as superfluous as it is tactless to add another cadenza here, as many cellists have done and still continue to do, since this appreciably disturbs the well-balanced proportions of the concerto.

This source-critical, practice-oriented new edition has been based on the first edition of the parts and the piano reduction, which were overseen by Schumann. In addition the autograph of the score was also examined; there is no ascertainable engraver’s copy. The “Revisions­bericht” provides detailed information on the sources used and their editorial treatment. We have omitted Bockmühl’s fingerings and the simplified ossia versions23, for which he was probably also responsible and which had been reproduced in the cello part enclosed in the first edition. In this context we recommend you to refer to the piano reduction EB 8597 which provides the solo part arranged and annotated by Heinrich Schiff.
