Gordon Jacob studied at the Royal College of Music in his native London and taught there from 1924 to 1966. His work catalogue is extensive and comprises pieces for all classical instruments; Jacob also enjoyed writing for unusual solo instruments such as the harmonica, the bass trombone and the accordion. The Trio for clarinet, viola and piano was given its world premiere in July 1969 as part of a Jacob “portrait concert” in the concert hall of the British Petroleum Company (BP), which also commissioned the work.
Gordon Jacob studierte in seiner Heimatstadt London am Royal College of Music und unterrichtete dort von 1924 bis 1966. Sein Werkkatalog ist umfangreich und umfasst Kompositionen für alle klassischen Instrumente, wobei er auch außergewöhnliche Soloinstrumente wie Mundharmonika, Bassposaune oder Akkordeon berücksichtigte. Das Trio für Klarinette, Viola und Klavier wurde im Juli 1969 im Rahmen eines Jacob-Portraikonzerts uraufgeführt – im Konzerthaus der British Petroleum Company (BP), die das Werk auch in Auftrag gegeben hatte.
