Vorwort

Monster und Menschen

Wie jedermann weiß, sind die Welten der Menschen und der Monster auf mysteriöse Weise miteinander verbunden. Als Erwachsener hat man es nur manchmal schon vergessen. Daher habe ich mir die Mühe gemacht, einige der gängigsten Melodien aus der Monsterwelt in unsere Welt zu transportieren. Im Gegenzug habe ich als Geschenk für klavierspielende Monster ein paar Menschenlieder geschrieben. Das erschien mir nur fair. Da Monster bis zu sechs Hände haben, gibt es Stücke für zwei, vier und sechs Hände. Menschen können gerne versuchen, diese zu zweit und zu dritt zu realisieren.

Monster und Lullabies

Das allererste Monsterlied entstand beim Klavierspielen mit meiner Tochter. Es regte mich dazu an, ein paar weitere kurze Lieder mit lustigen Texten zu schreiben. Nach und nach entwickelte sich eine regelrechte Eigendynamik, und ich hatte einen diebischen Spaß, die unterschiedlichsten Musikformen in die Monsterwelt zu transportieren. Dabei lag mein Fokus immer darauf, wie man mit leichten technischen Mitteln möglichst viel Freude am Musizieren haben kann. Die Lullabies (Wiegenlieder), die sich an ein älteres Publikum richten, entstanden als Reaktion auf die Geburt meiner eigenen Kinder und von Kindern aus dem Bekanntenkreis. Die Lullabies sollten den Neugeborenen musikalisch einen guten Start ins Leben wünschen, gepaart mit dem Wunsch, die Eltern aber auch gelegentlich schlafen zu lassen. Denn auch Kinder können manchmal kleine Monster sein …

Monster Gebrauchsanweisung

Monsterlieder ist ein Heft, das die Klavierspieler einige Jahre von den Anfängen bis zum Fortgeschrittenen begleiten wird. Daher sind die Stücke auch nicht konsequent nach Schwierigkeitsgrad, sondern eher thematisch sortiert. Es war mir dabei wichtig, einen breiten stilistischen Horizont abzudecken, sodass für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei ist, von fetzig bis verträumt. Manche Lieder haben Texte, die zum Singen oder zum Begleiten ermutigen sollen. Man kann sie aber auch nur instrumental spielen. Ich wünsche allen Monstern und Menschen von 5 bis 550 viel Spaß mit den Monsterliedern!

Monsters and Humans

We all know that the worlds of humans and monsters are somehow connected in a mysterious way. This is a fact that as grownups we sometimes forget. Thatʼs why Iʼve made the effort to transport some of the most popular tunes of the monster world into ours. In return, I have written a few human songs as a gift to piano playing monsters. I think, thatʼs only fair.

As monsters have up to six hands, there are pieces for two, four and six hands. Humans can try to play those in twos and in threes.

Monsters and Lullabies

The very firstmonster song came into my mind while playing the piano with my daughter. It inspired me to write a few more short songs with funny lyrics. Bit by bit, it gained momentum, and I got tickled pink from transporting diverse music forms into the monster world. My focus was always on how to get the most fun out of playing music with low levels of technical difficult. The lullabies that are aimed at a more mature audience were reactions to the birth of my children as well as those of friends and acquaintances. The lullabies were supposed to musically wish for a good start into life, and a good nightʼs sleep – also for the sake of the parents. As children can sometimes be little monsters, too …

Instructions for Monsters

Monsterlieder is a book to accompany piano players for several years from the very beginning through to the intermediate stage. Thus, the pieces are not consequently sorted by difficultylevel, but rather thematically. It was important for me to cover a broad stylistic horizon, to include something for all tastes, from groovy to dreamy. Some songs have lyrics that should encourage to sing along or accompany. But they can be played simply instrumentally as well.

All humans and monsters from 5 to 550 years: Have fun!

Monstermäßige Anmerkung: Diese Hymne wird bei Monstern traditionell während des Zähneputzens gesungen. (Weil Zähneputzen so langweilig ist und die kleinen Monster sonst nicht stillhalten). Sie ist so lange zu singen, bis die Zähne die gewünschte Farbe haben. Es ist theoretisch auch möglich, die Zähne von der Monstermama putzen zu lassen. Aber nur mit entsprechendem Text und mindestens zwei Minuten lang!

Monstermäßige Anmerkung: Dieses bei Monstern sehr beliebte Stück kann man auf vielerlei Arten spielen, z. B.: Alle drei beginnen gemeinsam oder nacheinander von unten nach oben bzw. von oben nach unten. Alle Monsterjazzer können auch mal zusammen denselben Part spielen oder zwei gemeinsam einen Part, während der dritte einen beliebigen anderen Part spielt. Bei echten Jazz-Monstern steigt auch schon mal einer ganz aus und legt ein Tänzchen aufs Parkett oder klatscht den Rhythmus. Probiert alle Möglichkeiten aus, die euch einfallen. Und, nicht aufhören, bevor nicht jeder mindestens einmal jeden Part gespielt hat!

Note for human performers: This piece is very popular among monsters and can be played in various ways. Some examples: All three start together or one by one from the bottom to the top part or vice versa. You can play the same part all the time and slide up, switching octaves; or two monsters play in unison while the third one plays one of the other parts. Real jazz monsters sometimes stop playing entirely and try some hip dance moves or clap the rhythm. Just try out any way you can think of and don’t stop playing until all monsters have played every part at least once.

Monsters love to jump all the time. Up and down, into the air and into deep holes. It keeps them healthy and confident.(And itʼs simply a lot of fun!)

Monstertanz | Monster Dance (p. 7)

Monsters love to dance in a circle. Unfortunately they tend to get very hot and smelly. So they simply drink a glass of perfume and they are ready to go on dancing. Monster note: Humans should use much less perfume, if they donʼt want to be mistaken for a monster. (And donʼt drink perfume! Itʼs only for monsters.)

Note: When you are playing this piece four-handedly, the primo should play the right hand melody in octaves.

Monsterlied | Monster Song (p. 8)

A monster walks through a forest and meets a mean little fle that stings his behind. The monster is immediately ready to take on a fight,but is not able to see his enemy. So it runs home to his mother and tells her everything: "I wish I knew who was the rascall. The coward flew!Too bad that it didnʼt think of the simple present of the last verb… the answer was so close!"

Think about that: Monsters donʼt like to go to bed! They try to convince their mother, that they are not tired at all. They run around and play up the bed and bark like a dog. But then Monster Dad comes and spoils all the fun by picking them up and tucking them into bed. Now the little Monster is calm and cuddles his toy sheep. A last little kiss and it falls asleep. Those little monsters…!!

he puts them in his sack and takes them away. (At least this is what children believed a hundred years ago – and obviously they were a little scared).

Unlike human children, monsters are longing to see Knecht Ruprecht. They enjoy being naughty and dirty all year and especially on Christmas Eve, to make sure that Knecht Ruprecht wonʼt forget them. The most wonderful thing for a Monsterʼs Christmas is to get to see the inside of Ruprechtʼs sack and get a little spanking (and maybe a toy whip for the little brother...).

As you know: Monsters love to dance. And if there is a ball, the monsters come from everywhere to join the dance. And if someone steps on another monsterʼs tail, it is not a problem. They just tread back and keep on swirling around.

Monster-Watschentanz | Monster Oktoberfest (p. 30)

A "Watschentanz" is a Bavarian folk dance, where the male dancers slap each otherʼs faces to the rhythm of the music. (Most likely a monster invented this dance…!)

It is no wonder, that this is one of the monsterʼs favorite dances. Monster Mom, Monster Dad, Monster Uncle: they all do the Watschentanz. And even Monster Grandma enjoys slapping Monster Grandpa from time to time…

Hymne für scharfe Monsterzähne | Anthem to Sharp Monster Teeth (p. 42)

Monster Dads sing this anthem while brushing their monster kidsʼ teeth (because brushing teeth is too boring for a little monster to sit still.) Note: It is conceivable that Monster Moms can brush the little monsters teeth too, but only when they change the lyrics adequately and always for at least two minutes.

Timothy Sharp ist es ein Anliegen, einige der gängigsten Melodien aus der Monsterwelt in unsere Welt zu transportieren.

Monsterlieder ist ein Heft, das die Klavierspieler von Anfang an für einige Jahre begleiten kann. In den Stücken für zwei bis sechs Hände, die teilweise auch mit Texten zum Mitsingen versehen sind, möchte der Autor einen breiten stilistischen Horizont abdecken und die Monsterwelt durch unterschiedlichste Musikformen bereichern.

Timothy Sharp ist von Haus aus Lied- und Opernsänger. Seit einigen Jahren komponiert er, neben Monsterliedern, auch Vokalmusik und ist seit 2016 Professor für Gesang an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim.

Monstrous Sounds

As we all know, the worlds of humans and monsters are somehow connected in a mysterious way. That is why the composer Timothy Sharp has made the effort to transport some of the most popular melodies from the monster world into ours.

Monsterlieder is a book, which will accompany piano players for several years right from the start. With his pieces for two to six hands, partly provided with texts to sing along, the author aims to cover a broad stylistic horizon and to enrich the monster world through a vast variety of musical forms.

Alexander Lorenz studierte am Chelsea College of Art and Design in London Kunst. Seit 2001 ist er freiberuflich als Grafikdesigner tätig mit Schwerpunkt Buch-, Zeitschriften- und Monstergestaltung.

Inherently, Timothy Sharp is a song and opera singer. For some years now, he has also been composing vocal music in addition to Monsterlieder. Since 2016, he has been a Professor for vocal music at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts.

Alexander Lorenz studied art at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. Since 2001, he has been working as a freelance graphic designer focusing on book, magazine and monster design.
