Frederic Lamond „Der Schotte und sein Beethoven“ Instruktive Ausgabe der Klaviersonaten Während in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten Urtext-Ausgaben mit verschiedenen Ansprüchen und Lesarten diverser Herausgeber zum primären Ausgangspunkt in der Auseinandersetzung mit Beethovens Klaviersonaten wurden, stellt sich heute umso mehr die Frage, welche Bedeutung sogenannte „Instruktive Ausgaben“ in der Interpretationsgeschichte haben, welcher Mehrwert sich aus ihnen generiert und wo dabei ihre Berechtigung liegt.

Im Falle von Frederic Lamond lassen sich diese Fragen dahingehend beantworten, dass er, als er die Sonaten ab 1923 bei Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig herausgab, zu einem der weltweit führenden Interpreten für Beethovens Musik zählte. Lamond war ein Pianist, der zum einen die romantische Beethoven-Tradition der Liszt-Schule verinnerlicht hatte, die bis zum Beethoven-Schüler Carl Czerny zurückreicht, und zum anderen für den Aufbruch in ein modernes Zeitalter stand. Er griff die technologischen Entwicklungen seiner Zeit auf, spielte Beethovens Klaviermusik sowohl zur Zeit der akustischen, wie von den 1920er Jahren an, auch zu Beginn der elektrischen Tonaufzeichnung ein. Frederic Lamond war dabei auch der Pianist, der mit dem 5. Klavierkonzert Es-dur erstmals eines dieser Werke Beethovens auf Tonträger brachte.

Durch seine viel umjubelten Konzerte in Nordamerika und Europa wurde er zur Referenz für die Interpretation Beethovenscher Klaviermusik. Noch heute gilt neben den genannten historischen Tonträgeraufnahmen insbesondere seine Ausgabe der Klaviersonaten als Zeugnis seiner Kunst.

Anders als sein Lehrer Hans von Bülow mit seiner Edition der Sonaten erlaubte sich Frederic Lamond keinen Eingriff in den Notentext.1 Seine Hinweise geben vielmehr interpretatorische Ansätze, durch die heutige Musiker zusätzliche Anreize für die musikalische Gestaltung erhalten: „Lamond beschränkt sich auf die Ausnotierung von Fermaten, Ornamentik, Pedalisierung, Dynamikergänzungen sowie auf etwaige Änderungen der Phrasierung und Artikulation“.2 Wie schon Eugen d’Albert als „Albertus Wagnerus“, Felix Draeseke als „Der Recke“ erhielt auch Lamond mit „Der Schotte“ seinen eigenen Spitznamen von Franz Liszt. Diese Betitelung allein lässt die persönliche Verbundenheit mit dem großen Liszt erkennen, der seit seiner Niederlassung in Weimar 18433 über Jahrzehnte hinweg bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1886 immer wieder aufstrebende Künstlerinnen und Künstler in seinen Kreis aufnahm und förderte, indem er ihren Werken zur Aufführung verhalf oder ihnen Klavierunterricht gab. Frederic Lamond sollte im Juni 1885 Liszt erstmals begegnen.

Geboren wurde Frederic Archibald Lamond am 28. Januar 1868 im schottischen Glasgow.4 Im familiären Kreis erhielt er erste musikalische Impulse. Sein Vater, der als Textilkaufmann arbeitete, leitete ein Orchester und einen Chor. Der junge Frederic entdeckte zunächst seine Vorliebe für die Orgel, wobei ihm sein Vater die Einsätze durch einen Kniff ins Bein gab. Bereits als

10-Jähriger arbeitete Frederic als Organist. In Ost-Glasgow galt er als Wunderkind, spielte Oboe, Englischhorn und Violine. Seinen ersten Klavierunterricht erhielt er von seinem Bruder David. Mit diesem und zwei weiteren Geschwistern siedelte er schließlich im Alter von vierzehn Jahren nach Frankfurt am Main über. Am dortigen Raff-Konservatorium erhielt er eine professionelle Ausbildung. Nachdem ihn Clara Schumann als Studenten abgelehnt hatte, weil er kein Empfehlungsschreiben vorweisen konnte, bekam er schließlich entsprechenden Unterricht bei Max Schwarz.

Kontrapunkt- und allgemeine Kompositionsstunden erhielt er vom Liszt-Schüler Anton Urspruch. Während seiner Frankfurter Jahre kam es zur folgenreichen Begegnung mit Hans von Bülow, der 1884 am Konservatorium zu Gast war und verschiedenen Studenten die Gelegenheit gab, ihm vorzuspielen. Unter diesen war auch der damals 16-jährige Frederic Lamond, der dieses Ereignis in seinen Memoiren beschrieb. „A six weeks’ course had been arranged by Bülow for the middle of May […]. Mondays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. till mid-day ; nothing but pure undiluted Bach, no Liszt, no Tausig transcriptions of Organ Fugues and Fantasias. […] Tuesdays and Fridays were devoted to Beethoven, Wednesdays and Saturdays, Brahms.“5 Hans von Bülow war ein bedeutender Komponist, Dirigent und Pianist des 19. Jahrhunderts. Über viele Jahre hinweg war er die rechte Hand von Liszt, wenn es darum ging, dessen Schülerinnen und Schüler zu unterrichten, insbesondere wenn dieser durch Konzertreisen und sonstige Aktivitäten verhindert war. Bülow sollte in den nachfolgenden Jahren zu einem Vertrauten und wichtigen Förderer Lamonds werden. Doch zunächst versuchte dieser auf Geheiß seines Lehrers Schwarz, der ein Empfehlungsschreiben verfasste, in Weimar die Gunst von Franz Liszt zu erlangen: „Suddenly the door of this bedroom opened. […] To the boy I was then, it was simply overwhelming. He read the letter of introduction, turned to me with his commanding, yet kindly eye, and said: ‚Schwarz writes that you play among other things the Fugue from Opus 106 [Hammerklavier-Sonate].’ Here he hummed the theme, which sounded from his lips like the growl of a lion, and said, giving me a friendly slap on the shoulder: ‘Tomorrow you play the Fugue from Opus 106‘ – and the interview was at an end. I rushed from that room in an indescribable state of mind.”6 Am nächsten Tag spielte Lamond zum eigenen Erstaunen neben Liszt vor 24 weiteren geladenen Personen. Liszt erkannte das Talent von Lamond und gab ihm jeden zweiten Tag Unterricht.

IV Beethovens Klavierwerk nahm dabei einen besonderen Raum ein. Lamond studierte unter Liszts Aufsicht die Fuge aus den Eroica-Variationen op. 35, die zwei späten Sonaten op. 109 und op. 111 sowie die Hammerklavier-Sonate op. 106 und die Diabelli-­ Variationen op. 120.7 Liszt unterrichtete in offenen Meisterklassen, sodass Lamond auch dem Unterricht anderer Pianisten beiwohnte. Während seiner Weimarer Zeit wurden die Sonate op. 2, Nr. 2, die beiden Sonaten op. 27 (darunter die „Mondscheinsonate“), die „Pastorale“, „Waldstein“, „Appassionata“, „Les Adieux“ sowie die Sonaten op. 90 und op. 110 besprochen, außerdem einzelne Violinsonaten und die Klavierkonzerte Nr. 3 und 5.8 Von einer eigenen pianistischen Ästhetik zu sprechen, die Liszt an seine Anhängerschaft vermittelte, sei es für das BeethovenSpiel oder allgemein, erscheint dabei jedoch problematisch. So ist über Liszts didaktischen Ansatz bekannt, dass dieser als Klavierlehrer Wert auf musikalische Eigenständigkeit legte und sich als eine Art Inspirationsquelle ansah, von der ausgehend ein eigenständiger künstlerischer Ansatz verfolgt werden sollte. „I [Lamond] remember a pianist who was performing Chopin’s Polonaise in A-flat, and playing it with great gusto. When he came to the celebrated octave passage in the left hand, Liszt interrupted him by saying : ‚I don’t want to listen how fast you can play octaves. What I wish to hear is the canter of the horses of the Polish cavalry before they gather force and destroy the enemy.’”9 Dass Lamond durch den regelmäßigen Unterricht, direkte pianistische Demonstrationen und die offenen Meisterklassen mit anderen Pianisten die Vorstellung von Liszts Beethoven-Interpretation vermittelt bekam, ist anzunehmen. Inwieweit jedoch diese einjährige Erfahrung auch mehr als 30 Jahre später, als er längst ein gefragter Beethoven-Interpret war, für ihn noch richtungsweisend war, lässt sich schwer nachvollziehen. Anfang 1886, im Todesjahr Liszts, begleiteten Frederic Lamond und weitere Anhänger Liszts diesen nach Rom. Über Liszt äußerte sich Lamond später: „Liszt was the good Samaritan of his day and generation. […] I’m profoundly grateful to Providence to have been one of his last pupils.”10 Die nachfolgenden Jahre waren für Lamond belastend. Die Auftragslage für Pianisten war dürftig, und er litt unter Depressionen.

Eine Laufbahn als Komponist verfolgte er nicht konsequent. Einzelne Werke, die heutzutage in Vergessenheit geraten sind, entstanden vor allem mit Anfang 20.11 Lamond suchte sein Glück zunächst in St. Petersburg, ehe er zurück nach Frankfurt ging und dort als Klavierlehrer seinen Unterhalt bestritt. Neuen Schwung erhielt seine Karriere schließlich durch eine Aufführung von Peter Tschaikowskys Klavierkonzert in b-moll, das er auf Wunsch des Komponisten (nach dessen Tod) in Moskau aufführte. Die meiste Zeit seines Lebens verbrachte Lamond allerdings in Deutschland.

Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts war er ein erfolgreicher und gefeierter Pianist. Er konzertierte in den USA und weiten Teilen

Europas. Mit Beethoven-Projekten wie der Aufführung von sechzehn Sonaten sowie den Diabelli- und den Eroica-Variationen inner­halb von vier Tagen in der Queen’s Hall in London (1925) machte er immer wieder von sich reden. In diese Zeit fällt auch seine Ausgabe der 32 Klaviersonaten von Beethoven, die 1923 erstmals bei Breitkopf & Härtel erschien. Frederic Lamond wurde damit zum Inbegriff der Beethoven-Interpretation.

Für seine Beethoven-Nähe wurde er von britischer Seite zur Zeit der anti-deutschen Stimmung immer wieder kritisiert.12 Anfang der 30er Jahre war auch Lamonds Name im Gespräch, als es um die Planung der ersten Gesamteinspielung aller BeethovenSonaten ging. Artur Schnabel erhielt schließlich von der HMV (His Masters Voice) den Vorzug, nachdem er alle Sonaten in Berlin aufgeführt hatte.13 Während des Zweiten Weltkrieges zog es Frederic Lamond zurück nach Schottland. Er spielte immer wieder Konzerte mit Werken Beethovens auf dem Programm und wurde als „Lamond – the greatest living exponent of Beethoven“14 angekündigt.

Außerdem waren in neunzehn Radioübertragungen der BBC regelmäßig seine Interpretationen von Beethovens Musik zu hören.

Sein Name war so eng mit Beethoven und dessen Musik verknüpft, dass einige Kritiker so weit gingen, auf die Ähnlichkeit zu verweisen, die Lamonds Gesicht mit dem von Beethoven habe.

Im Alter von 80 Jahren starb er im schottischen Stirling. Die letzten zwei Jahre seines Lebens konnte er aufgrund körperlicher Einschränkungen nicht mehr konzertieren. Auch heute noch wird sein Name in erster Linie mit Beethoven in Verbindung gebracht.

Frederic Lamond, “The Scotsman and his Beethoven” Instructive Edition of the Piano Sonatas Whereas in past decades Urtext editions with assorted aspirations and readings by various editors were the primary points of departure in addressing Beethoven’s piano sonatas, today it is more often the question of what significance so-called “instructive editions” have in the history of interpretation, what additional benefit is generated from them, and wherein lies their legitimacy.

In Frederic Lamond’s case, they can be answered by the fact that when as of 1923 he edited the sonatas for Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig, he was one of the world’s leading interpreters of Beethoven’s music. Lamond was a pianist who had not only internalized the Liszt school’s Romantic Beethoven tradition going back to the Beethoven pupil Carl Czerny, but who also stood for the new departure into a modern age. He took up the technological developments of his period, recording Beethoven’s piano music both at the time of acoustic recording and also of electrical recording at the outset of the 1920s. He was thus also the pianist who first recorded one of Beethoven’s piano concertos, No. 5 in E-flat Major. By way of his much-acclaimed concerts in North America and Europe, he became the acknowledged authority for the interpretation of Beethoven’s piano music. Even today, his edition of the piano sonatas, together with the aforementioned historical recordings, particularly attests to his art.

Unlike his teacher Hans von Bülow in his edition of the sonatas, Lamond did not allow any intervention in the music text per se. His indications give instead interpretive approaches, additionally inspiring today’s musicians in the realization of the musical composition: “Lamond confines himself to notating fermatas, ornamentation, pedaling, additional dynamics, and to possible changes in phrasing and articulation.”1 Franz Liszt nicknamed Lamond “The Scotsman,” just as he had already called Eugène d’Albert, “Albertus Wagnerus,” and Felix Draeseke, “The Warrior.” This nicknaming alone shows Lamond’s personal connection with the great Liszt whom he was to meet for the first time in June 1885. For decades after settling in Weimar in 1843,2 up to his death in 1886, Liszt had repeatedly welcomed into his circle aspiring artists, giving them piano lessons or promoting their works for performance.

Frederic Archibald Lamond was born on 28 January 1868 in Glasgow, Scotland.3 He received his first musical stimulus within his familial circle, as his father, a draper, conducted an orchestra and chorus. The young Frederic initially discovered his predilection for the organ, accessing the pedalboard when his father sawed off the organ-bench legs. As a 10-year old, Frederic was already working as organist. He was considered a child prodigy in East Glasgow, playing oboe, English horn, and violin. His first piano instruction came from his brother David. Together with him and two other siblings, he ultimately moved at age fourteen to Frankfurt am Main. There, at the local Raff Conservatory he received a professional education. After Clara Schumann rejected

him as a student, he finally got instruction from Max Schwarz; counterpoint and general composition lessons he was given by the Liszt pupil Anton Urspruch. During his Frankfurt years he had a momentous encounter with Hans von Bülow, who, as guest at the conservatory in 1884, was giving various students the opportunity to audition for him. Among these was the then 16-year-old Frederic Lamond, who described this event in his memoirs.

“A six weeks’ course had been arranged by Bülow for the middle of May […]. Mondays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. till mid-day; nothing but pure undiluted Bach, no Liszt, no Tausig transcriptions of Organ Fugues and Fantasias. […] Tuesdays and Fridays were devoted to Beethoven, Wednesdays and Saturdays, Brahms.”4 Hans von Bülow was one of the major composers, conductors, and pianists of the 19th century. For many years he was Liszt’s right-hand man, teaching his pupils, especially when Liszt was away on concert tours or engaged in other activities. In subsequent years, Bülow was to become Lamond’s confidant and important sponsor. Though in Weimar Lamond at first tried to obtain Liszt’s favor at the behest of his teacher Schwarz, who wrote a letter of recommendation: “Suddenly the door of this bedroom opened. […] To the boy I was then, it was simply overwhelming. He read the letter of introduction, turned to me with his commanding, yet kindly eye, and said: ‘Schwarz writes that you play among other things the Fugue from Opus 106 [“Hammerklavier” sonata].’ Here he hummed the theme, which sounded from his lips like the growl of a lion, and said, giving me a friendly slap on the shoulder: ‘Tomorrow you play the Fugue from Opus 106’ – and the interview was at an end. I rushed from that room in an indescribable state of mind.”5 The next day to his astonishment he played not only to Liszt but also to 24 other invited persons. Liszt recognized his talent and gave him lessons very other day, Beethoven’s piano works occupying there a special place. Under Liszt Lamond studied the fugue from the “Eroica” variations, Op. 35, the two late sonatas, Opp. 109 and 111, the “Hammerklavier” sonata, Op. 106, together with the “Diabelli” variations, Op. 120.6 Since Liszt taught in open master classes, Lamond also attended other pianists’ lessons. Discussed during his Weimar period were the sonata, Op. 2, No. 2, the two sonatas, Op. 27 (among them the “Moonlight” sonata), the “Pastoral,” “Waldstein,” “Appassionata,” ”Les Adieux,” as well as the sonatas, Opp. 90 and 110, in addition to several violin sonatas and the piano concertos, Nos. 3 and 5.7

VI It seems problematic, however, to speak of Liszt’s conveying to his followers his own pianistic aesthetic, whether for playing Beethoven or in general. His didactic approach as a piano teacher is thus well known: the fact that he attached great importance to musical sovereignty, regarding himself as a kind of inspirational source from which an independent artistic approach was to be pursued.

What I wish to hear is the canter of the horses of the Polish cavalry before they gather force and destroy the enemy.’”8 We can assume that Lamond got the idea of Liszt’s Beethoven interpretation from his regular instruction, direct pianistic demonstrations, and open master classes with other pianists. It is difficult, however, to retrace the extent to which this single year’s experience was still guiding him more than 30 years later, when he had long been a sought-after Beethoven interpreter. Early in 1886, the year of Liszt’s death, Frederic Lamond and other Liszt disciples accompanied him to Rome. Lamond later commented: “Liszt was the good Samaritan of his day and generation. […] I’m profoundly grateful to Providence to have been one of his last pupils.”9 The following years were stressful for Lamond. Situations for pianists were few and far between, and he suffered from depression.

He did not consistently pursue a career as composer. Individual works, nowadays forgotten, were composed especially during his twenties.10 He first sought his fortune in St. Petersburg before returning to Frankfurt to support himself there as a piano teacher.

His career finally gained new momentum from his performance of Peter Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto in B-flat Minor, performed in Moscow at the composer’s request, though after his death. Most of Lamond’s life was nevertheless spent in Germany.

By the beginning of the 20th century he was a successful and celebrated pianist, concertizing in the US and across much of Europe. He repeatedly caused a stir with his Beethoven projects such as performing sixteen sonatas as well as the “Diabelli” and “Eroica” variations within four days at the Queen’s Hall in London (1925). Dating from this period is also his edition of Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas that first appeared from Breitkopf & Härtel in 1923. Frederic Lamond thus epitomizes Beethoven interpretation.

The British also repeatedly criticized him, though, for his closeness to Beethoven, particularly at the time when an anti-German mood prevailed.11 At the start of the 1930s, Lamond’s name was also discussed during the planning for the first complete recording of all the Beethoven sonatas. Artur Schnabel was ultimately given preference by the HMV (His Master’s Voice) after he had performed all the sonatas in Berlin.12 During World War II, Lamond moved back to Scotland, where again and again he programmed Beethoven’s works and was billed as “Lamond – the greatest living exponent of Beethoven.”13 His interpretations of Beethoven’s music were also to be heard in nine BBC radio broadcasts.

Lamond’s name was so closely linked with Beethoven and his music that some critics went so far as to point out the resemblance of his face to Beethoven’s. No longer able to concertize in the final two years of his life due to physical disabilities, he died in Stirling, Scotland, at the age of 80. Even today his name is still associated primarily with Beethoven.

Vorwort zur Originalausgabe | Preface to the Original Edition Frederic Lamonds Ausgabe des Beethovenschen Sonatenwerkes fußt auf der Urtextausgabe der Klavier-Sonaten, die in drei Bänden und Einzelheften im Verlage von Breitkopf & Härtel erschienen ist. Den Fingersatz fügte der Herausgeber hinzu, auch die Metronombezeichnungen stammen von ihm, soweit nichts anderes angegeben ist, nur die Sonate op. 106 hat Beethoven selbst mit Metronomangaben versehen. Alle sonstigen Zutaten an dynamischen Bezeichnungen, Angaben über Tempo, Spielart und Ausführung läßt die angewendete Drucktechnik ohne weiteres als solches erkennen. Was aus dem Urtext der Werke stammt, ist in großer Schrift

Frederic Lamond’s Edition of Beethoven’s Sonatas is based on the original edition of the Pianoforte-Sonatas, which appeared in 3 volumes and single numbers, published by Breitkopf & Härtel. The fingering has been added by the edi­ tor; also the metronomical signs, unless otherwise stated, except in the case of the Sonata op. 106, the metronomical signs in which are Beethoven’s own. All other additions, in the way of marks of expression, indications of tempo, manner of playing, and execution are immediately apparent as such from the method of printing employed. Everything found in the original text of the works is printed in large type, thus:
