street art Three Icons of Beeston have been given a lasting tribute in Beeston Town Centre as part of the Beeston Street Art Festival. The late actor Richard Beckinsale, the late singer/songwriter Edwin Starr, and fashion designer Sir Paul Smith were spray painted by international street artist Zabou to celebrate the influential creatives of Beeston. The street art on Station Road was commissioned by Broxtowe Borough Council as part of its Beeston Square Redevelopment project. The original funding was provided by Henry Boot plc. as part of Beeston Square Phase 1. The Council chose to use the remaining £8,179 of the fund for the street art. Deputy Leader, Councillor Mel Crow said, “The street art has been a real talking point in Beeston and I’m delighted with the fantastic response to it. I think anyone who sees it will agree that it is visually stunning and Zabou has done the town proud. Together with the est of the street art which has been completed as part of the Street Art Festival, we have showcased the creativity that Beeston is known for and I’d like to thank the many local people who helped make it happen.” Jeanie Barton, Organiser of the Beeston Street Art Festival Team, said, “After organising the inaugural Beeston Street Art festival in June I was delighted Broxtowe Council voted to spend their remaining Henry Boot Art Fund on commissioning the wall. Zabou has created a massive mind-blowing mural featuring our most famous local creatives. Crowds have been gathering already and Kate Beckinsale shared a progress shot on Instagram praising the work and Beeston. I’m delighted the art is already such a huge attraction for my home town.” Zabou said, “It’s always amazing to have very positive feedback and I think the celebrities are speaking to a lot of people because they’re really loved around here, some people are emotional and it reminds them of their childhood. It’s really nice. This is my last really big mural for the year, as I’ve been non-stop travelling and painting for the last three months. So I’m looking forward to my bed. I won’t be able to rest too much though as the next thing for me is a group show at the Saatchi Gallery in London in December so I’ve got to prepare for that.” The redevelopment of Beeston Square began in 2013 and work on Phase 2, which includes 120 new homes, a cinema and a number of new food and drink outlets, is set to begin in 2019. festive fun

With Christmas around the corner, Nottingham Playhouse is getting set for the return of the city’s favourite outlaw in Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood, directed and written by Kenneth Alan Taylor. Considered a ‘Midlands institution’ Nottingham Playhouse’s annual pantomime has confirmed the welcome return of actors Tim Frater and Kelly Agredo as Robin Hood and Maid Marian. Known for his legendary performances as the Dame in many Nottingham Playhouse pantomimes, John Elkington will be taking to the stage as Nurse Nellie Noggins, alongside Rebecca Little as Tilly Tuck the Tomboy. Joining them will be Robin Kingsland as the evil Sheriff of Nottingham. Following a successful pilot in 2017’s pantomime, Cinderella, Nottingham Playhouse has also confirmed that it will feature two adult chorus members - Kinden Singh Uppal and Clarice Julianda. The move to include adult chorus members is to provide recently graduated performers the opportunity to gain valuable professional credits. Director Kenneth Alan Taylor said: “Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood is a classic pantomime story and its already received a great response from audiences. It’s been six years since we last staged this production, so we felt it was about time Robin came home for Christmas!” 2017’s show saw hugely successful ticket sales for the Nottingham Playhouse pantomime, and the theatre company expects the local angle to draw even bigger crowds to this year’s production. The classic tale will see ultimate villain the Sheriff of Nottingham hatch a wicked plan to get rid of his brother’s children, the Babes in the Wood, and claim their fortune. It’s down to Robin Hood to save the day and stop the Sheriff with a little help from his Merry Men and Maid Marian. Family-friendly and full of festive fun and energy Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood will feature sumptuous costume designs, glittering sets, silliness, songs and laughter for all ages. Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood is showing at the Nottingham Playhouse Friday 30th November – Saturday 19th January. No matter how confident you appear to others, underneath lies a very different story. Do not be afraid of your fears as they are there to show you that there is something worth the courage to fight for. Romantic relationships are a serious business for you. Once you give your heart you give your partner your loyalty and devotion. Good humour and laughter are the best medicines to fight anxiety and depression. Its an excellent business and social asset so use your charm to get exactly what you want. Certain associations may have fallen into a rut and need to be revitalised. Be efficient, systematic and don’t waste time on trivial tasks. A certain dream you have held close to your heart is about to materialise and become a reality and a romance begins to hot up. Be selective in all things because you cannot afford any expensive mistakes. If need be, become ruthless when dealing with people who are time wasters and wanting something for nothing. Change is necessary if you are to make progress regarding a pet project, especially if you have felt a trifle stagnant lately. Romantically, you will be in tune with the spirit of things and know exactly how to surprise your partner. Celebrations will soon be in order because of an exciting family event.

breezemagazine16

After months of chopping and changing your mind regarding one important matter, suddenly everything will begin to fall into place. You are about to make a mammoth, life changing decision and will be glad that you had the confidence and resourcefulness to follow your dream. Some excellent financial news will put you in a bright, chirpy mood. A holiday will do you the world of good. You need time and space to deal with past events that have proved trying and stressful. For once, put your own needs first. Watch out! because a fair weather friend may suddenly appear knowing that others have done all the hard work. People have very short memories and forget how badly they may have hurt you previously. Business wise, some opportunities are too good to miss so look into a proposition most carefully because there could be some serious money to be made. Similarly, if you are job hunting, you will spot an advertisement that appeals greatly. Be bold, be brave and go for it. You have every reason to get motivated because trends are starting to suddenly be working in your favour. Someone else's misfortune may well become your gain. The path of true love rarely runs smoothly and you may learn valuable information that suddenly explains someone's strange behaviour. Keep your hand firmly and tightly on your wallet. You have done enough paying out for others with little or nothing in return. Its time to look in a new direction for friends who are more on your wavelength.

If you feel let down by certain friends its because they have revealed their true colours and not as nice and considerate as you were led to believe. Romance for singletons looks promising, especially if you have recently taken up a new hobby or sporting interest. A house move looks likely or major money may be spent on home improvements. A holiday taken in the hills or by water will give you the peace and calm that you crave and need. Keep your secrets safe and refuse to share certain information even with someone you are close to. You never quite know who is talking to whom. Your predictions regarding a certain situation will materialise and your accuracy regarding this scenario will stunning. A major decision may have to be made regarding a house move project. If you have recently lost something of value , it will either turn up again at a later date or you will benefit far more greatly by a most unexpected surprise that is coming your way. Long distance journeys can be exhausting, but so can finding yourself living a humdrum existence. Beware of a false and jealous love rival who is out to cause as much damage as possible. Relationship issues of one kind or another could be causing you a lot of necessary bother. Someone is insisting on acting like a 'drama queen' and attracting a lot of attention to themselves. Be wise and refuse to lend money, especially if the person concerned has a bad, previous track record for repaying their debts. A declaration of love from an admirer will take your breath away, especially if its from someone you are not even interested in.

As much as you are trying to justify your actions and behaviour regarding one particular association, by now, you may be rapidly realising that you have acted too hastily and possibly lost a good friend. Gossip regarding other people surrounds you and there is a danger that you will join in by contributing your input as well. Its not always easy to jiggle your diary around to accommodate others, but you may be forced to where family is concerned. You’ll be tempted to do something dramatic very soon and an emotional outburst could result in you making a life changing decision. New friends that you thought were excellent may suddenly fall off their pedestal revealing their true colours and forcing you to reconsider future social plans. A secret admirer must be kept hidden if you are to avoid a major confrontation at a later date. A lucrative business proposition whets your appetite.

christmas collection volunteers Marie Curie is appealing for local volunteers to help at their Christmas Collections. Can you help? Collections are an integral part of the Marie Curie fundraising calendar and they help to fund the Marie Curie Volunteer Helper Service and the Marie Curie Support Line in Nottinghamshire. The local Marie Curie fundraising team are seeking Christmas collectors to help at collection days in supermarkets, stores and towns. Marie Curie staff support our patients and their families right the way through the Christmas season. Whilst everyone else will be preparing for Father Christmas to arrive, our nurses, volunteer helpers and support line staff will be starting their Christmas shifts. Last year, one of our nurses was quizzed by a young son of a patient as he was concerned Father Christmas would not visit, “because she stays awake all night to look after Daddy”. Sue, quickly explained that Marie Curie has a special agreement with the big man himself, that our nurses can close their eyes when he arrives at the house so that she does not see him. Rebecca Davies, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser for Nottinghamshire says “As a collector you’ll be able to raise vital funds for patients living with a terminal illness in Nottinghamshire. Our collection slots are only two hours long and will leave you with a winter warming Christmas cheer. Pull on your Christmas jumper, wrap yourself in tinsel and don one of our yellow Marie Curie St. Nick hats. Come with family and friends or on your own to meet likeminded people.” Whether you’re a seasonal fundraiser or a newcomer looking to get involved for the first time, your local Marie Curie fundraising office would love to hear from you. To become a Marie Curie Collector, you need to be aged 16 or over. Children are welcome to collect alongside a parent or guardian. To sign up to a collection online visit our website www.mariecurie.org.uk/get-involved/collecting or more information on how you can get involved, please contact Rebecca Davies on 07825044305 or email Rebecca.Davies@MarieCurie.org.uk

us.... What our customers say about “I have just had a carpet fitted by Blacklock Carpets and what a great experience I have had. From the start Jo was so helpful and pleasant and nothing was any trouble, she gave me a few samples of carpets she thought would be nice and let me take them home to make sure I was entirely happy. The fitting was arranged really quickly and smoothly and I was kept informed of the whole process as to when it would be due in to when it would be fitted etc Thank you so much. I would highly recommend them xx”

“This is the second time we've used Blacklock as we were very impressed by the first job they did for us a couple of years ago. Firstly we had a luxury vinyl kitchen floor fitted and this week we had a large area, stairs and landing fitted with carpet. The kitchen floor still looks like new; the carpets look amazing and have been very well fitted. We shall definitely return to Blacklocks for future work. A lovely family run business that care about your needs and do a fabulous job! What more can I say but thank you”.

“Fantastic service from everyone at Blacklock Carpets. It’s great to see a family run business where everyone involved is so very helpful. Due to illness I couldn’t visit the store so the store was brought to me! A few weeks later and all the work complete. Fabulous service, fabulous carpet from fabulous people! clean and green

Schoolchildren from Beeston Fields Primary School helped make Broxtowe Borough a cleaner and greener place as they joined in with a special litter picking and tree planting event in Beeston this month. Pupils from Year 5 joined Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Derek Burnett BEM and members of Beeston and District Civic Society at Broadgate Park on Wednesday 24th October for the event as part of the Council’s Clean and Green campaign. While the Civic Society planted an oak tree and took part in the litter pick, the children planted two Mountain Ash trees and daffodil bulbs. The trees are the first to be planted as part of a new initiative to plant 1,000 new trees every year in the Borough over the next five years. Chair of the Leisure and Environment Committee, Councillor Shane Easom said: “This event is really exciting because it really shows what our Clean and Green campaign is all about – everyone from all ages and backgrounds doing their bit. The campaign, together with our Pride in Parks scheme to invest £500,000 in the Borough’s parks and open spaces over the next two years, as well as our tree planting initiative is a fantastic investment in the Borough to ensure we protect the environment for future generations.” Claire Lindsay, Head Teacher at Beeston Fields Primary & Nursery School said her pupils were delighted at the opportunity to take part. “This project mirrors our own philosophy of caring for the spaces around us and being proud of our community. Not only do the children love to take part, they enjoy the satisfaction it brings to see the positive changes they are making; instilling in them an awareness of how important it is that we preserve our green spaces for the future.” The Council’s Clean and Green Campaign will see £72,000 invested in new initiatives to complement and enhance existing programmes to keep Broxtowe clean and tidy. A special resource pack has been created for local groups and organisations who want to get involved and run their own litter pick events, to help them carry out activities safely, as well as promote them in their local area. The Council can also help by lending litter picking equipment.

superb superfoods! You may be surprised to learn that fresh salad can be grown through the winter – in the garden or in a window box. You could be picking fresh leaves to garnish your Christmas dinner if you follow our growing guide, as well as have some gardening satisfaction of course! Winter salad The growing methods used are very similar to ones used back in summer but with some alterations to account for the colder weather as you might expect. Choose the hardy varieties of your favourite summer lettuce. You may wish to experiment with more unusual winter salad crops such as Texsel Greens and salad burnet. For a continuous supply, sow a few seeds every four weeks. Seedlings will simply freeze if left standing in pools of water so good drainage is vital. Grow in a sheltered, sunny position as it's important that the seedlings are protected from cold winter winds. Soil preparation Choose a sheltered sunny spot in the garden and dig the soil over, mixing in well-rotted manure or garden compost

to add nutrients and help the soil retain moisture. Rake it to leave a fine finish. Container growing Ideal for sunny patios or smaller gardens or even a balcony! Prepare your container mix using a mix of plain potting compost and John Innes. Use a window box or pot - both are equally useful. Sowing: Sow up to mid-November (so get cracking this weekend!). If you keep up regular sowings this will ensure that you have a continuous crop. Sow your seeds in short, shallow rows, cover with soil, label and water. That’s it! Then we look to keep them growing through the early winter months... Care of your winter salads Keep the soil just moist but ensure that your seedlings do not get too cold or wet. Do keep an eye on the weather forecast and protect your seedlings if a frost is predicted using fleece sheets. As always - keep planting, learning and Enjoy!

WINTER SALAD TO GROW: Lettuce 'Arctic King' For best results sow under glass if you can. Lettuce 'Valdor' - ready for picking 10-12 weeks later. Texsel Greens - fastgrowing salad plant taste similar to spinach. Radicchio 'Treviso Precoce Mesola' Endive 'CanCan' a frisee-type of lettuce. Winter Purslane hardy, green and tasty, a lovely salad throughout the winter 'Golden Purslane' will brighten up your salad bowl.

860 years and counting! The exceptional achievements and commitment of local volunteers were honoured at a tea party given by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire last month. From the Attenborough and Toton Division, Irene Whitehead and Jean Reid were each presented with the Nottinghamshire Star in recognition of their longstanding local support, whilst an a Oak Leaf Award was given to Brownie Leader Carolyn Huckerby – one of her Brownies was quoted as saying ‘Carolyn is kind through and through, she keeps us interested and guides us on to new adventures.’ Oak Leaf Awards were also given to Beeston Brownie Leader Louise Lee and to Hayley Buchanan, who has continued to help Rainbows, Guides and Young Leaders in Beeston and Chilwell whilst studying for her degree. There was another presentation to Louise in the form of her 30-year service award, with the Beeston & Chilwell’s Jill Barnes collecting one of the first 60-year service awards to be presented in the county. Held at Mansfield’s Portland College, the tea party gave County Commissioner Jackie Brocklehurst the opportunity to present awards to over 50 members and friends of Girlguiding across Nottinghamshire. In addition to announcing 22 ‘Long Service Awards’ – including the county’s first awards marking 60 years of service –Jackie presented Oak Leaf Awards to 14 Leaders and the Nottinghamshire Star to four nonuniformed volunteers in recognition of their outstanding support for local Guiding. Jackie also used the occasion to give 12 special ‘Thanks’ badges as personal gestures of appreciation: several went to members of the team responsible for MegaMoot, a camp run jointly by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire and Nottinghamshire Scouts over four days in May and attended by some 4,500 young people. ‘I’m proud to say that the Long Service Awards conferred today recognise a grand total of over 860 years of service to Girlguiding, and it was a privilege to publicly celebrate such exceptional commitment,’ said Jackie afterwards. ‘Helping young people get the most out of life is rewarding in so many ways. Our volunteers not only benefit from training, mentoring and invaluable experience but, as shown by this afternoon’s tea party, we also have a lot of fun along the way!’

renovation funding A Charity in Beeston Rylands is awarded £30,000 after their innovative services impress major UK funder The Garfield Weston Foundation more than doubles its £5m anniversary fund to over £11m to support over 150 charities across UK, after overwhelming demand Beeston Rylands Community Association has been awarded £30,000 from one of the UK’s largest charitable funders. The funding is for renovations at the Leyton Crescent Community Centre which is home to the Friday Club for over 60’s and the local youth club. The funding will enable the charity to renovate the kitchen and bathroom to provide a modern facility for the local community. The Garfield Weston Foundation says small community charities are rising to the challenge of facing unprecedented demand for their services by being proactive and innovative. The Weston Anniversary Fund was launched earlier this year to provide funding to charities to improve their existing facilities or provide new ones as part of the Foundation’s 60th year. TheTrustees took the decision to more than double the fund after receiving over 2,300 applications, with over 60% from charities that have never applied to them before. Local Borough Councillor, Teresa Cullen, Chair of Trustees at The Community Association says: “We are absolutely thrilled with this news. Bringing this old community centre back into use has been two and a half years of hard work by a number of local volunteers. Getting this grant has been such a boost to our efforts. The Community Centre is an older building and is sorely in need of some modern facilities. Beeston Rylands is a vibrant local community that has experienced its fair share problems during the recession. Now we can hope that these much needed updates will make the centre accessible to many more users for years to come.” Local resident Barbara Green who attends the Friday Club and volunteers on the Committee says; “The Community Association has helped me to make new friends after my husband died and feel like I have something to do. I have to motivate myself to join in with things becausedepression sometimes stops me, but knowing I am doing something for others really helps me. I help keep the building running as a volunteer caretaker and I am so pleased that we are going to be able to update our kitchen and bathrooms, it really is going to make life much easier”

raising funds 50th Year Ball Marks Anniversary Celebrations for Autism East Midlands Saturday night saw 150 supporters from across the East Midlands come together to celebrate the golden anniversary of Autism East Midlands as they hosted their 50th year ball. The evening raised £12,000. The black tie event, celebrated the support the charity has given families affected by autism since 1968. Autism East Midlands has since grown to be the largest specialist autism charity in the East Midlands, providing support for both adults and children, and improving the quality of life for thousands of families. The celebrity guest for the evening was Henry Normal, who was born in St Ann’s, Nottingham. Known to many locally as the co-founder of the Nottingham Poetry Festival, Henry is a writer, poet and and award winning TV and film producer. Henry opened the 50th Anniversary Ball with a moving speech about his family’s experiences of autism. Henry Normal, special guest for the evening said: “It was such an honour being invited to Autism East Midland’s fiftieth year celebration. As a Nottingham born lad with an autistic son I know the value of the great work being done. It’s not a coincidence that many of the team have connections with autistic family members. It’s obviously not only a campaign or a job for a lot of people but very much a passion. I wish AEM all the best for the next 50 years and beyond.” A live auction and raffle were the main fundraising activities on the night. Autism East Midlands would like to thank all the businesses and supporters who have generously supported this 50th Anniversary Ball, especially lead sponsors C.Ratcliffe’s Builders Limited and intu Victoria and Broadmarsh Centres, as well as Geldards Solicitors. Jane Howson, Chief Executive Officer of the charity said: “We are so grateful to our sponsors and supporters for helping to raise an incredible amount! Autism East Midlands has been involved in supporting autistic people and their families for fifty years, and the evening was a great celebration of that work, as well as an opportunity for us to look to the future. The funds raised from the evening will be used to support our network of family support hubs across the region – so thank you!” The family support hubs meet in a variety of locations across the region and aim to help families affected by autism create effective peer support networks, as well as giving autistic children and siblings a chance to interact with each other. The families who attend feel the benefit of the community created by Family Support Hubs. A local parent who attends one of the hubs said - “The family hub is great - it’s a safe, enjoyable and inclusive place for both my children to play and be themselves.” More information on the hubs can be found on the Autism East Midlands website; www.autismeastmidlands.org.uk

knead well until it is smooth, pliable and elastic. This will only take a few minutes. (Remember to remove any rings before kneading the dough). Place the ball of dough into the other large bowl, cover with a cloth and leave in a warm place for 1 hour, until well-risen and doubled in size. (This is a good time to make your tomato base and prepare any toppings). The tomato sauce Heat the oil in the frying pan over medium heat, and gently fry the onion for 5 minutes. Add the chopped tinned tomatoes, vinegar, and herbs and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Purée the sauce in a blender or with a hand blender. Set to one side. Putting it all together Stage one After the dough has had an hour to rise, turn the oven on to 220°C/425°F/Gas Mark 7. Turn out the dough on to a lightly floured surface, punch it down and divide into four pieces. Stage two Knead each piece lightly and roll out until it is about 30cm in diameter. Oil the metal baking sheet and place one of the rounds of dough on it. Top the dough with the tomato sauce and any other toppings of your choice. Stage three Bake in the preheated oven until the base of the pizza is crisp and golden brown, around 10 minutes. all you need is love Earlier in the month people and communities were encouraged to recognise the benefits of befriending and its role tackling loneliness and social isolation during the annual Befriending Week. Why not see if you can volunteer and make a massive difference to someones life...

Everyone needs other people but not everyone has someone. For people who become isolated because of ill health, disability or social disadvantage being matched with a befriender often fills a big gap. This year’s theme is “Befriending Builds Communities and will celebrate the work of befriending organisations and projects throughout the country and raise awareness of befriending and the impact it has on individuals and communities. The Volunteer Centre in Erewash recruit befrienders, sitters, shoppers and drivers to help people referred throughout the borough. If you have just one hour a week to spare to help someone near to you and would like more information please call 0115 946 6740, pop in the Centre on Granville Avenue in Long Eaton, email linda@erewashcvs.org.uk or check out the national volunteering website www.do-it.org.uk and search for opportunities via your postcode. People from all walks of life and all ages volunteer and for some it can help them meet new friends, learn new skills, find a new career and feel valued. Out of pocket expenses and training is provided. The team look forward to hearing from you, it might just be the best thing you ever did!
