For stunning panoramic views and limitless fresh clean air, the 519 square miles of the Brecon Beacons National Park take some beating. From Pen y Fan’s 886-metre summit you’ll get 360-degree views of mountains that roll across the landscape like immense green waves. Don’t forget your camera for limitless photo opportunities. But the central Beacons are only part of the National Park’s story. This wild and wonderful landscape contains endless surprises.
There are the glacier-scraped outcrops of the hidden Carmarthen Fans, and the lakes and reservoirs at Llangorse, Talybont and Pontsticill. The remote brooding Epynt and borderland Black Mountains, plus Ystradfellte’s waterfall country of caves, rushing rivers and steep wooded gorges. Take it easy with the unforgettable scenic drive through the Llyn Brianne Valley and the magnificent Abergwesyn Valley at the Park’s Western edge. Or travel over
the Gospel Pass in the shadow of Hay Bluff into the lush green rural Llanthony Valley . Spectacular sights don’t stop when the sun goes down. The Park is an International Dark Sky Reserve, one of only 12 in the world. Gaze up on a clear night and you might be treated to a view of the Milky Way and the occasional meteor shower. The Penderyn Distillery will give Scottish distilleries a run for their money. They produce a range of single malt whiskys and two gins “Brecon Botanicals� using water from the Brecon Beacons! Take a tour of the distillery or a Whisky Chocolate special! penderyn.wales
On a visit to Big Pit National Coal Museum you will learn all about the former thriving South Wales coal mining industry. Journey underground with an ex coal miner as your guide who tell you wondrous stories from the coal face. museum.wales
A journey through lovely farming countryside will take you up onto the wild open spaces of the Epynt and onto the Welsh Lavender Farm. here’s magic in these mountains. Across the region you’ll find historic places and haunting monuments with ancient stories to tell. The romantic ruins of Tintern Abbey in the Wye Valley inspired William Wordsworth to immortalise them in verse. You’ll see why if you take in the views from Devil’s Pulpit, a jagged limestone outcrop high above the Abbey. According to legend, Satan himself once stood on this rocky perch to try and tempt the monks in the valley below from their holy duties.

Check out elegant Raglan in the East, a late medieval masterpiece built as much for comfort as combat. In stark contrast there’s battle-hardened Carreg Cennen, set high on a rocky crag at the Brecon Beacons National Park’s Western edge. With walls seemingly springing from the sheer cliffs on which it stands, an attack on this castle must have been a daunting prospect. Access is easier these days, so you won’t have to work too hard to take in the breathtaking green vistas that stretch out in every direction. he Brecon Beacons are made for walking. From the glacial lakes of the National Park’s remote western side, to the rolling central Beacons and on to the Black Mountains and Offa’s Dyke at the eastern edge. Every exhilarating step reveals spectacular views. Peace and tranquillity come as standard. As you walk, your only company could be the mewing call of an occasional buzzard or the distinctive sight of soaring red kites in the skies above. At an impressive 886m, Pen y Fan is the heart of the Brecon Beacons and the highest peak in South Wales, but you don’t have to be mountaineer to reach the summit. Park up at Storey Arms on the A470, and a walk to the top is a manageable four-mile round-trip. If you prefer to stay on the level , there are plenty of other options! Take a gentle stroll with your dog along the tow path of the Monmouth and Brecon Canal. From the common land of Mynydd Illtud, near the Brecon Beacons National Park Visitor Centre, you’ll get amazing views of the Beacons. Stroll in the splendid isolation of the Begwn Hills near Hay on Wye (your dog will love it!). Please remember mountain weather conditions can change quickly. Prepare yourself properly before you set off and you’ll have a walk to remember for all the right reasons. breconbeacons.org/walking
A TASTE for ADVENTURE We’ve got a thrilling range of activities to satisfy your appetite for excitement. For any serious mountain biker the 55-mile Taff Trail linking Cardiff and Brecon is a must! The National Park section, takes you through mountainous scenery, past deep blue reservoirs and crashing waterfalls.
Choose your own adventure at Llangorse Multi Activity Centre activityuk.com. Tackle the Sky Trek Challenge, a daring aerial assault course of speeding zip wires and platforms high in the trees. Only those with a head for heights need apply. Or go inside to an awesome all-weather playground of climbing walls, rope bridges, abseils and even an indoor cave system all of which cater for children.
There are plenty of other ways to explore the Brecon Beacons. Saddle up for a pony trekking trip through the foothills from the Cantref Riding Centre cantref.com and Llangorse Multi Activity Centre. For a totally different view of the Brecon Beacons, go underground into miles of caves lying deep beneath the mountains. Descend into the depths of the Porth-yrOgof cave system with Black Mountain Activities blackmountain.co.uk and come face to face with The Worm Hole, Death Ledge and The Washing Machine! For a less demanding subterranean experience, try the National Showcaves Centre at Dan-yr-Ogof showcaves.co.uk which has breath taking rock formations. It’s an experience with real depth.

Get the party started at fabulous festivals featuring food, drink, music, art and more. Feed your mind at the world-famous Hay Festival hayfestival.com This feast of literature, art, music, comedy and current affairs runs for nearly two weeks every May–June, showcasing writers, thinkers and performers from across the globe (memorably described by former President Bill Clinton ‘as the Woodstock of the mind’). It’s perfectly located in the beautiful border town of Hayon-Wye, known as ‘the secondhand book capital of the world’. You don’t have to be a farmer to enjoy it. This colourful celebration of rural life is a fun, family-friendly day out, featuring a host of entertaining events (everything from sheepdog trials to stunt driving demonstrations) and a feast of delicious, locally sourced food.
Set against a spectacular backdrop of the Black Mountains near Crickhowell, Green Man ‘s location greenman.net is certainly one of the most beautiful music festivals you’ll ever attend. From humble beginnings as a tiny folk event, it has grown to one of the hottest dates on the UK festival calendar, attracting 20,000 attendees every August. The chilled-out vibe and varied range of performers make it a big hit with festival-goers of all ages. When it comes to good eats, it doesn’t get much bigger than Abergavenny Food Festival abergavennyfoodfestival.com Every September, the streets of this lively market town are transformed into a giant buffet featuring food and drink producers from across the country. Added to the mix are demonstrations and talks from top TV chefs, plus live music and street performances. All in all, a very tasty package.
