SAFETY Not just feelings

Operator safety has always been the most important aspect taken into consideration during the design of Merlo machines. The primary protective element for those who use our telehandlers is the structure of the Merlo cab, which is certified according to the ISO 3449 FOPS Level II and ISO 3471 ROPS standards, and guarantees the best protection rating in its class. The FOPS protection grille is outside the glass roof to improve roominess while at the same time safeguarding the integrity of the structure and windscreen. All the telehandler models are equipped with a built-in Merlo safety system that monitors and manages safety-related parameters in real time, allowing the operator to work with complete peace of mind.

Machine safety is enhanced by an automatic management of the parking brake that brakes the machine if the engine switches off, so as to avoid unintentional movements.

The Merlo designers have devised a sturdy, compact and lightweight telescopic boom that is recognised as a benchmark for design, load capacity and speed when carrying out work activities. The steel is of the highresistance type and the welds are along the neutral bending axis, offering a rectilinear boom in any extension or loading condition. By inserting the hydraulic hoses inside the boom, the external shape is clean and free of any elements that can get caught and cause potential damage. These features preserve the components and extend the life of the boom.

6

FOPS PROTECTION

A metallic structure, positioned above the glass roof, makes it possible to achieve the most stringent level of certification in terms of protection: FOPS level II. This solution guarantees:

• Perfect comfort in the cab

• Excellent visibility of the load

• Maximum operator safety

• The structure can be easily dismantled for more thorough cleaning of the roof

SAFETY SYSTEM

To ensure compliance with the most stringent regulations in the field of frontal tipping prevention, all telehandlers in the Merlo range are equipped with tools developed to ensure maximum performance in terms of boom speed and lifting capacity, without compromising operator safety. The solutions differ according to the product range.

• The simplest models feature an EN15000compliant system.

• The ranges with Load-Sensing hydraulic system complete safety with the innovative ASCS (Adaptive stability control system).

CHASSIS

Compared to market standards, the frame is characterised by small dimensions, allowing to minimise the overall floor space occupied by the machine. Furthermore, it is equipped, on the outside, with an exclusive belt, made from steel section bar.

Designed to maximise structural strength and ensure excellent torsional strength, the underside of the body is completely secured by steel sheets, in order to protect all components from possible impacts during off-road driving.

LEVELLING

Merlo telehandlers can be equipped with a levelling corrector device. This solution is able to compensate for transverse inclinations of the ground up to 8%. This ensures a vertical lifting of the load and limits the risks of lateral instability of the machine.

7

ASCS

The ASCS (Adaptive Stability Control System) safety system ensures perfect risk prevention of the machine tipping over frontally when handling a load. The system regulates the speed and maximum degree of movement according to three operating parameters:

• Handled load - kg of material lifted

• Load position - extension and boom angle and carriage rotation

• Implement in use - automatically recognised by special sensors

When the operational stability limit is reached, the system first reduces the speed of the arm and then stops movement completely. In this phase, only those movements that re-establish a safer condition are permitted, simplifying the use of the machine even for less experienced users.

The ASCS is equipped with a 10,1'' colour display, as standard, that allows the operator to view all operating parameters in real time. The high-brightness display has an integrated sensor for automatic brightness adjustment according to external light conditions. In this way, a simple reading of the stability conditions is always ensured, shown inside a load diagram that updates, in real time, according to the load being handled and the implement in use. At any time the customer can see at what point the safety system will be triggered. Independent control of each hydraulic movement allows the identification of movements potentially unsafe in the event of an ASCS intervention. In these situations, a pop-up message shows the customer all the movements allowed which are not detrimental to the stability of the vehicle. Finally, the display continuously shows the inclinometer to maximise the safe use of the machine.

8
DISPLAY

WORKING AREA SETTING

A special function, accessible via the display, allows the operator to set the geometric working limits. Adjustments can be made in accordance with the vertical and horizontal movements or in accordance with the relative movements of the boom (minimum and maximum lift and extension). This solution makes it possible to simplify and increase safety during repetitive work and in confined spaces, such as inside a warehouse.

MOVEMENT SPEED SETTING

The ASCS system uses the display to customise the speed of individual movements of the telescopic boom and the attachments in use according to the needs of each operator as well as the operations to be carried out. Up to nine different setups can be stored.

FREE ZONE

By equipping the machine with a shovel, which is recognised accordingly, the working free zone is automatically activated. A working area of up to 1 metre of reach and 10° of lift. Within this area it is possible to operate without the control system blocking the movement of the implement in case of overload, facilitating digging operations and ensuring perfectly smooth movements.

MEMORISING HANDLED LOADS

The ASCS display allows the reading of the load being handled, either manually or automatically, whenever the telescopic boom is raised beyond the degrees of inclination pre-set by the operator. The average tolerance on the measured values is ±5% because these can vary depending on the dynamic conditions of the machine. The system can store up to 1.000 different readings, displaying the total and the last 20 values.

CONTINUOUS DELIVERY

Machines with display are equipped with a system for regulating and delivering a constant flow of oil to the implements. This solution allows the oil flow to be precisely and specifically adjusted from 0 to maximum flow rate, for each of the 4 auxiliary hydraulic outlets at the top of the boom. This solution is also available as an option for several other models.

REAR CAMERA

In combination with the 10,1” colour display of the ASCS system, it is possible to equip the machine with an automatically-operated rear camera, when the reverse gear control is engaged. Images from the rear of the telehandler are shown directly on the in-cab display. The camera can also be activated manually from the ASCS menu

PERFORMANCE

Merlo telehandlers are equipped with an exclusive hydrostatic transmission of the latest generation with full-time four-wheel drive, which guarantees an excellent braking capacity when the accelerator is released. The Merlo transmission provides a high level of torque to the wheels during material handling and transport activities, and, depending on the model, can reach maximum speeds of up to 40 km/h, all while guaranteeing millimetric precision movements during load positioning operations. The specially designed axles have been developed and produced in-house by Merlo Group. They are made specifically to enhance each model’s distinctive characteristics, and are offered in two different versions: axles equipped with planetary gearboxes for a high load-bearing capacity, reliability and excellent traction; and gantry axles for reliability, traction and operational versatility, with increased ground clearance.

ENGINES

The available engines have power ratings ranging from 75 to 170HP, and are all installed on the right side of the frame, along the machine’s longitudinal axis, in accordance with the original Merlo design concept. This solution maximises the components’ accessibility for scheduled and/or extraordinary maintenance interventions.

Merlo’s continuously variable CVTronic smart transmission combines Merlo’s proven experience with hydrostatic transmissions with new technical solutions, allowing the machine to achieve the same performance and yield as a traditional CVT system, while at the same time limiting consumption with excellent efficiency. Compared to a conventional hydrostatic transmission, the CVTronic provides 12% more torque.

10
CVTRONIC

Merlo telehandlers can be equipped with the exclusive boom side-shift system. The system is built into the machines’ frame, and allows for the lateral movement of the telescopic boom to ensure precise load positioning, with no need for additional manoeuvring, thereby saving time, reducing stress, and improving the machine’s productivity.

FAN DRIVE

The Fan Drive is a technology fitted as standard that allows you to change the engine fan's rotation direction from venting, which cools the radiators, to blowing, which cleans the radiators, eliminating dust and residues collected during the work phase, while at the same time maintaining the system’s performance and efficiency unaltered.

REGENERATIVE SYSTEM

HYDRAULIC COUPLINGS

A unique and patented solution. The hydraulic couplings developed and produced by Merlo guarantee quick assembly and disassembly, high connection tightness, and longer component life.

In order to improve productivity, the HM models all come standard with the regenerative system for the hydraulic circuit. This solution has been developed to increase the boom’s angular speed when handling materials. This fully automated system is capable of increasing the boom’s speed by 36%.

11
SIDE-SHIFT
BOOM

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM

Merlo telehandlers are equipped with advanced hydraulic solutions designed to maximise the reactivity and modulability of the machine’s movements based on the operator’s commands.

There are two hydraulic solutions available:

• Fixed displacement hydraulic pump; the working pressure is limited to 210 bar, with the aim of reducing component wear and hydraulic oil overheating.

• Load-sensing variable displacement hydraulic pump; maximises the system’s efficiency and ease of use. Possibility of including a Flow-sharing electronic control valve for the simultaneous operation of three hydraulic movements without any problems for the operator

CAPACITIVE JOYSTICK

Merlo telehandlers with Load Sensing system are equipped with the innovative capacitive electronic joystick. The joystick detects the presence of the operator by means of a capacitive sensor, and enables the hydraulic movements of the vehicle and attachments, managing up to 4 as standard. On the dashboard, near the joystick, there is a button that activates the carriage rotation lock. This is used to prevent unintentional rotation when working with special equipment that requires a fixed position (e.g. fly jibs and winches).

HI-FLOW HYDRAULICS

The models featuring Hi-Flow (HF) technology are machines equipped with the latest-generation hydraulic distributor developed by Merlo and associated with a high-flow hydraulic pump.

The HF system combines the features of traditional hydraulics with innovative solutions such as:

• Descent by gravity

• Automated movement control

• Digitised actuator position control

• Services oil continuous delivery

Thanks to Hi-Flow technology, Merlo is able to offer first-rate performance and unique solutions to speed up and simplify users' daily operations.

12

This fully automatic solution allows the weight of the boom and load to be used for the lowering movement, significantly limiting the demand for hydraulic power and, consequently, consumption and noise, without reducing safety. Faster and more fluid movements allow for increased performance.

VERTICAL ELEVATION

The automatic vertical elevation was developed in order to facilitate load handling operations within confined spaces. By activating this function, the machine synchronises the extension and lifting movements in order to achieve a purely vertical movement of the load during both loading and unloading of the material.

FLOATING MANAGEMENT SET-POINT

Set-point has been developed to reduce repetitive operations for operators, simplifying daily work. By activating this function, the operator can memorise a working configuration, capable of autonomously managing the hydraulic movements (extension/ retraction, lifting/lowering and carriage rotation) in order to return the implement to the memorised position.

Available as an option, floating boom management has been developed to increase the versatility of the machine, facilitating operations with equipment that needs to follow ground contours such as sweepers, snow ploughs, shovels, etc.

Activating this function allows the boom to follow the ground contours freely, ensuring that the implement is in constant contact with the ground.

SUSPENDED CAB

The models in this range can be fitted with the exclusive and patented Suspended Cab (CS). By equipping the machine with this unique solution, the cab is fitted with an active hydropneumatic suspension, which can be controlled directly by the operator with an electric switch. When the suspension is active, the total displacement of the passenger compartment is 110 mm (-60 mm / +50 mm); a condition that provides for a drastic reduction in vibrations and stresses inside the passenger compartment, thereby facilitating transport and work operations, even on uneven ground.

TILTING CAB ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The exclusive Merlo cab tilting system ensures greater levels of comfort, ergonomics and safety. From the driver's seat, the operator activates the cab's tilting feature via the dedicated button. The inclination reaches 20° and allows you to monitor the movements of the load when working at heights.

Merlo telehandlers are equipped with electrical systems that are meticulously designed in order to maximise the cleanliness of the circuit, as well as to facilitate machine maintenance and setup operations. The connections have an IP65 protection rating for optimal protection against water and dust.

15

BOOM SUSPENSIONS

The active boom suspension system (BSS) is available as an option, which protects the load during transfer and maintains a high level of driving comfort on rough terrain. The suspension is automatically deactivated at low speed (below 3 km/h), for boom maximum precision and power.

AIR CONDITIONING AXLE SUSPENSION

The exclusive, electronically-controlled active suspension absorbs vibrations and jolts transmitted from the ground to the frame, and guarantees a more comfortable ride, especially when operating on rough terrain. In addition to reducing transport times and improving operator comfort, the device also operates as a transversal and frontal inclination corrector, allowing you to work in total safety even on sloping terrain.

The air conditioning system is completely new and has been developed according to automotive standards, halving the warm-up and cooldown times to guarantee the optimal temperature under all conditions. The Merlo cab can reach an optimal internal temperature, even in extreme weather conditions. The inlet vent is placed on the side of the cab, away from potential sources of dust and dirt to maximise the service life of the filters. Inside there are 8 vents, three of which are dedicated to defrosting the windscreen, for optimal climate comfort.

16

Merlo machines have a carriage that is designed to offer maximum performance in terms of excavation force and protection of the main parts, all without compromising on lightness, which is essential for ensuring an exceptional lifting capacity. The maximum rotation greatly facilitates the loading and unloading of material with shovels. The Tac-lock device, which comes standard on all the models, guarantees maximum operating comfort by allowing the tools to be hydraulically locked directly from the cab.

17
The cab has a new design that favours functionality and comfort. EPD AND SELF-ACCELERATING JOYSTICK

The exclusive and innovative EPD (Eco Power Drive) is a Merlo patented system for the electronic control and regulation of the engine and transmission. The EPD automatically controls and adjusts engine speed, hydrostatic pump flow rate and hydrostatic engine displacement according to operating conditions to maximise efficiency and reduce RPM and ensures a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 18%. The annual savings is Euro 3.300 (the figure assumes an average use of 1.000 h/year). The EPD can include the "Self-accelerating joystick" function, which allows managing the engine speed proportionally to the use of the joystick (the greater the inclination of the joystick, the greater the engine rpm). This feature further optimises machine consumption, allowing idle speed to be maintained for longer while maximising responsiveness for material handling.

BATTERY ISOLATOR SWITCH

As a standard feature, the telehandlers come equipped with an electric and automatic battery switch to improve the efficiency and life of the batteries. Removing the key from the ignition switch starts the process of disconnecting the machine's electrical circuit. With the circuit off, simply insert the keys into the control panel again to reactivate the batteries.

The patented Merlo EPD Plus system includes three modes of use that apply to different operating needs: "Heavy Load", "Eco" and "Speed Control". The “Eco” mode optimises performance in relation to fuel consumption and can be used for light operations; the “Speed Control” mode is essential for transport and towing, allowing the forward speed to be set and maintained constant regardless of changing operating conditions; the “Heavy Load” function is optimised for heavyduty work requiring the machine to be used to its full potential.

This exclusive solution adopted on the axles guarantees the maximum steering angle to perform manoeuvres in confined spaces.

DBM RANGE A real work site

The DBM truck mixers have always shown their ability to adapt; their construction concept and exclusive technical features have led the DBM to be used under a wide range of highly demanding working conditions, in complete autonomy.

The DBM models are equipped with a self-loading bucket capable of handling up to 700 litres of aggregates with each load cycle; the water pump is capable of pumping up to 250 litres of water per minute into the mixing drum, allowing up to 3.5 sq.m of concrete to be mixed in less than 15 minutes.

The quality of the mixture is guaranteed by Merlo’s exclusive double helix drum mixing system, by the high barrel volume/concrete yield ratio, and the precise electronic weighing system of each component (available as an option).

The machine is completed with an engine compliant with the latest emission regulations (Stage V) that is capable of delivering high power and torque while at the same time guaranteeing low fuel consumption.

The mixing barrel is mounted on a structure that is capable of rotating laterally by 180° and tilting vertically to speed up the discharge operations. The lateral rotation, combined with the movement of the discharge channel, allows for the discharge and positioning of the material around the entire perimeter of the machine.

POWERTRAIN:

Hydrostatic transmission with full-time four-wheel drive and 2-speed transmission. Engines with power ratings of 100 HP, with a maximum speed of 40km/h. Lateral and longitudinal positioning of the engine.

STEEL BARREL:

Heavy duty steel barrel. The high barrel volume/concrete yield ratio reduces the mixing time and maximises the quality of the finished product. The support structure allows the barrel to be tilted and rotated to facilitate the discharge of the material.

CAB:

The ROPS certified cab, which can rotate by 180°, is designed for maximum roominess, and guarantees excellent protection for the operator. The machine’s LARGE windows and layout ensure absolute comfort and visibility.

TWO-WAY DRIVING:

This feature helps the operator during work phases on the construction site and during the transfer phases. It ensures greater versatility and improves productivity and operating comfort.

WEIGHING SYSTEM:

The DBM models can be equipped with a weighing system, which allows the necessary amount of material to be inserted into the barrel to obtain the correct mixture. A feature that guarantees high-quality work.

FRAME:

The steel frame is designed to ensure excellent weight distribution and a low centre of gravity, which are indispensable conditions for building a practical and versatile vehicle. The frame houses two large tanks capable of holding up to 930 litres of water, for increased work autonomy.
