MEN’S SOCCER TREVOR GORMAN Head Coach

Trevor Gorman enters his fourth season as head men’s soccer coach for the University at Albany Great Danes. Through his first three seasons, Gorman has seen a steady improvement since taking over as head coach. The Great Dane head coach is 18-32-8 overall and 7-10-2 in conference play. The Great Danes totaled 10 points in America East play with a 3-3-1 record to be named the No. 5 seed in the America East Tournament in 2013. It was their best record in America East play since joining the league. UAlbany nearly upset nationally ranked No. 6 UMBC in the league semifinals, but fell 2-1 in Baltimore. The Great Danes beat Vermont 5-1 in the quarterfinals for the team’s highest offensive output in five years. Gorman also led UAlbany to its first program victory over a nationally-ranked opponent, a 2-1 against No. 22 Fairleigh Dickinson at home. The win was the first for the Purple & Gold in a new home, Bob Ford Field. In 2012, the Great Danes appeared in the America East Conference Tournament for consecutive seasons since 2005-2006. UAlbany hosted a home postseason conference game for the first time since 2008. Gorman’s squad saw an improvement in conference play, going 3-4-0 and finishing fifth (finished 6th and tallied a 1-3-3 record in 2011). Freshmen Anthony Rozzano, Philip Persson and Tim Allen were named to the America East All-Rookie Team.

From 2007-09, Gorman was an assistant at Dartmouth College, where the Big Green appeared in three consecutive NCAA Tournaments and won an Ivy League championship. In Gorman’s three seasons, Dartmouth had a combined 3217-4 record and eleven players earned All-Ivy recognition. A native of State College, Pa., Gorman played for his father at Penn State University where he was a midfielder on the 2002 Big Ten Conference championship squad and a pair of NCAA teams. His father, Barry, is the all-time winningest coach in Penn State history with 266 career victories and 13 NCAA appearances. After earning All-Academic Big Ten honors his senior season, Gorman enrolled in graduate school at the University of North Carolina. During that period, he worked for UNC’s sports marketing division. His responsibilities included contract fulfillment for clients, promotions and the Tar Heel Sports Network. He also coached with the Sanford Area Soccer League and the Triangle United Soccer Club. Gorman, who has a B.A. in business management, has a sports publicity background, having worked in Penn State’s sports information office. He assisted at the NCAA Men’s and Women’s College Cups and the Atlantic Coast Conference men’s and women’s soccer tournaments. In addition, Gorman was a sideline reporter for Fox Soccer Channel’s college broadcasts. Gorman, who holds a NSCAA Premier Coaching Diploma, earned a master’s degree in exercise and sport science with an emphasis in sport administration from North Carolina.

In his first season at the helm in 2011, Gorman brought the Great Danes to the postseason for the first time since 2008. UAlbany went into the America East Conference postseason as the six seed. The Great Danes saw their goal production almost double in 2011, scoring 22 goals (13 in 2010). UAlbany finished the season 6-10-3 and 1-3-3 in league play. Gorman was an assistant at Wright State for one season prior to being hired at UAlbany on Feb. 16, 2011. At Wright State, Gorman assisted in all aspects of the Horizon League program. He planned training sessions, prepared scouting reports, handled video analysis, and coordinated recruiting, with emphasis in the area of international student-athletes. He also coached at the club level with the Ohio Galaxies and the Upper Valley Lightning in Hanover, N.H.

University at Albany men’s soccer head coach Trevor Gorman appointed Bill Boyle to assistant coach for the Great Danes in April of 2014. Boyle begins his first season with the Purple & Gold after spending three years at

University at Albany men’s soccer head coach Trevor Gorman announced Wednesday, Aug. 6 that goalie specialist Bubby Leasure has joined the squad as an assistant coach.

“We are thrilled to add a coach of Bill’s quality, and experience, to our staff,” said Gorman. “He is an accomplished coach who fits in well with our program, and we’re excited for the positive impact we know he will immediately have.” In his three years with the Raiders, Boyle proved his strength on the recruiting circuit with a nationally ranked 2014 class for Colgate. He also brought in six freshmen that made an immediate impact for the Raiders in 2013. As a first-year assistant with Colgate in 2011, Boyle led the Raiders to their fifth Patriot League title and an NCAA appearance with a record of 11-5-6. Along the way, Boyle saw five players named All-Conference in the Patriot League, as well as the Offensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the league. Three Raiders also earned NSCAA All-Region accolades, with Patriot League Rookie of the Year Jimmy McLaughlin signing on with the Philadelphia Union. Boyle spent one season with Michigan State in 2010-11 while earning his USSF A Coaching License. He primarily worked with the goalkeepers, as well as directing the day-to-day operations of the team and scouting opponents. The Spartans made an NCAA Third Round appearance that season, falling to North Carolina in penalty kicks. The Michigan native has experience coaching at a variety of levels, including high school, club and NCAA Division III. Boyle was the head coach at D-III Olivet College outside of Detroit from 2005-08. He helped develop the Comets to achieve a program-best No. 14 ranking in 2009, after the team managed just four wins in MIAA play between 2002 and 2004. Boyle kicked off his coaching career at his alma mater, Okemos High School in 2001. The Chieftains won the Division 1 State Championship under Boyle in 2004. He also coached the U-16 Real Colorado boy’s squad from 1999-2000. A standout soccer player in high school and college, Boyle was a Mr. Michigan Runner-Up at Okemos after scoring 32 goals in his senior campaign. He proceeded to a standout four-year career at Hartwick College under NSCAA Walt Chyzowych Lifetime Achievement Award winner and Hartwick College Hall of Fame inductee Jim Lennox. Boyle played professionally for the Detroit Dynamite and the Cincinnati Riverhawks before beginning his coaching career.

“I’m very excited to add Bubby to our staff,” said Gorman. “He has tremendous experience from his playing and coaching careers, and will be a valuable asset to us in all aspects of our program.” Leasure arrives at UAlbany after spending one year at Colgate. He worked primarily with the goalkeepers for the Raiders in addition to serving as the Director of Goalkeeping for the Soccer Central Club in Syracuse, N.Y. Leasure was also the head coach of the Odyssey Soccer Club out of Sherrill, N.Y. Prior to his tenure with the Raiders, Leasure worked as the first assistant at Bowling Green with the women’s soccer program during the 2012 season. In 2011 he was the first assistant for the Hartwick women’s soccer team. As associate head coach of the women’s program at Olivet College in Michigan from 2008-10, Leasure was instrumental in turning around a Comets program that had not reached 10 wins in a season since 2001. Olivet went 13-5-2 in 2010 behind a seven-game home winning streak for its best showing since 1998. Leasure began his coaching stint at Olivet simultaneously serving as the first assistant for the men’s program in 2008, alongside current UAlbany assistant Bill Boyle. He coached goalkeeper Ethan Felsing to consecutive All-MIAA First Team honors in 2008 and 2009. Kicking off his coaching career in Michigan, Leasure also led the Lansing Eastern High girl’s soccer team to the district tournament for the first time in school history in 2010. A 2000 graduate of the University of South Florida, Leasure was a four-year goalkeeper for the Bulls. He garnered Conference USA Player of the Week honors twice at USF during the 1999 season. The Tampa native earned his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.

Boyle graduated from Hartwick in 1998 with a degree in business management. He and his wife Melinda as well as son Liam and stepson Cody join the Great Dane family for the upcoming 2014 season.

MEN’S SOCCER Men’s Soccer Tabbed Fifth in America East Preseason Poll CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – The America East’s men’s soccer coaches voted the University at Albany men’s soccer team to a fifth-place finish in the preseason poll, the league announced Tuesday. UAlbany earned 27 points, one point shy of Stony Brook to rank fifth. The Great Danes earned their highest preseason league ranking in Trevor Gorman’s tenure as head coach. The last time the Purple & Gold earned a preseason ranking above No. 6 was in 2009, when the Great Danes garnered one first-place vote and the No. 4 spot. UAlbany reached the conference title game in 2008. Gorman’s squad returns nine starters and 80% of its offensive production from one season ago. The Great Danes (6-114, 3-3-1 AE) fell 2-1 in overtime to nationally ranked and eventual 2013 league champion UMBC in the league semifinals in Baltimore. The Retrievers were picked to win the league, earning seven first-place votes for 49 points. Hartford finished second with 42 points after falling to UMBC in the championship last season. New Hampshire took the third-place spot with 34 points. Four points separated No. 4 from No. 6, with Stony Brook taking 28 points for the fourth-place slot. Vermont came in behind UAlbany with 24 points at No. 6. Binghamton (12 points) and UMass Lowell (8 points) rounded out the eight-team poll. MEN’S SOCCER UAlbany Men’s Soccer 2014 Season Preview ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men’s soccer team opens exhibition play this weekend in preparation for the 2014 season. Trevor Gorman’s Great Danes look to improve on a 6-11-4 record from last season. 2013 SEASON: One year ago, UAlbany advanced to the America East semifinals for the first time since 2011. In the team’s largest offensive output since 2008, the Purple & Gold defeated No. 3 seed Vermont 5-1 in the quarterfinals to face No. 1 seed UMBC in Baltimore. UAlbany suffered a narrow 2-1 loss to the nationally ranked Retrievers in double overtime. Highlights: • The 2013 Great Danes earned their first Division I win over a nationally ranked opponent when they defeated No. 22 Fairleigh Dickinson at Bob Ford Field 2-1 on Sept. 15. The win also marked the first-ever victory for a UAlbany team at the newly-constructed Bob Ford Field • UAlbany won four games at home, its highest home win total since 2006. • The Purple & Gold also posted record attendance in 2013, attracting nearly 2,000 fans for its night game on Sept. 25 against local rival Siena. Gorman’s squad attracted a crowd of 1,000 fans or more on three occasions at Bob Ford Field. RETURNING FOR 2014: UAlbany returns nine starters and 14 letterwinners from last year’s America East semifinalist team, including over 80% of its offense. The Great Danes depended on a balanced scoring attack last season, including 11 goal scorers led by Brandon Wilson with four tallies. Phillip Persson topped the Purple & Gold in the assist column with four last season, and was named a captain for 2014. Three sophomores look to make an immediate impact after emerging as scoring threats in 2013, including Jonathan Interiano, Bernardo Mattos and Leo Melgar. Interiano assisted the gamewinner to Phil Denara against Fairleigh Dickinson on Sept. 15 off the bench, as well as scoring the gamewinner in double overtime against New Hampshire on Oct. 26. Melgar played just nine games due to injury, but scored in his first career appearance against UMass Lowell on Oct. 16. Mattos notched the gamewinner at Binghamton in the final game of the regular season to secure a postseason bid for the Great Danes. Denara, Persson, Wilson and All-America East Second Team selection Anthony Rozzano will anchor the midfield. Rozzano scored the game-tying goal against New Hampshire at home on Oct. 26 en route to a double overtime win for the Great Danes. The trio of upperclassmen will look to fill the gap left by Pomare Te Anau, who will not return in 2014 due to injury. In the back, Tim Allen returns to the net after suffering a season-ending injury last season. The senior captain started in all 11 of his appearances with a goals against average of 1.00 and 53 saves. Along with Allen, the Great Danes return two experienced defenders in Dominic McGarr and Luke Palmateer. A threetime captain, McGarr has started 58 consecutives games, the most for any Great Dane all-time. Palmateer made 20 starts on defense for the Purple & Gold last season as a freshman, and earned a spot on the America East All-Rookie squad. THE SCHEDULE: Gorman’s 2014 Great Danes will play nine home games this season, and face out-of-league opponents from nine different conferences. UAlbany renews the series with Colgate after a two-season leave to open the home slate on Sept. 5. The Raiders kick off a three-game homestand that includes Monmouth on Sept. 7 and Iona on Sept. 12. Monmouth, the preseason favorite in the MAAC, is receiving votes in the preseason NSCAA Poll. The teams fought to a 1-1 double overtime tie last season in New Jersey. The Great Danes meet Villanova for the first time all-time in its new soccer complex on Sept. 14, and also face St. Francis (N.Y.) at home on Sept. 30. The Red Flash earned the NEC’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, and also boast preseason MAC Hermann Watch List contender Kevin Correa. Opening the America East schedule on Oct. 4 against Vermont, the Great Danes travel to UMass Lowell and New Hampshire before a rematch against UMBC on Oct. 18 at home. The Purple & Gold play three of its last four league games at home to conclude the regular season.

University at Albany

MEN’S SOCCER University at Albany Director of Athletics Mark Benson The University at Albany named Mark Benson as director of athletics on August 20, 2014. Benson, 45, became the University’s second AD since the program entered Division I sports 15 years ago. As director, Benson, who previously was the senior associate athletic director at Old Dominion University, provides leadership for UAlbany’s NCAA Division I, 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program and its scholar student athletes. Following a nationwide search, Benson took the reins of the University’s diverse athletics programs from outgoing AD Dr. Lee McElroy, who announced his retirement in June of 2014. “It is important for UAlbany to engage an athletics leader who has a demonstrated background for combining success in sports with high academic achievement. Mark Benson is well qualified to head a program that values the integrity of the collegiate athletics experience,” said University at Albany President Robert J. Jones. “We have an outstanding athletics program with many benefits and a great legacy on which to build. The University community extends a warm welcome to Mark and his family.” Benson also served as the assistant vice president for Athletic Development at Old Dominion, and has served in this capacity since August 2006, and was an adjunct professor in the Sports Management Program. During his time at Old Dominion, Benson was responsible for budget preparation and administration, as well as providing sport supervision for men’s and women’s sailing. During Benson’s tenure at Old Dominion, the Athletic Endowment grew more than $16 million and the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation annual fund grew from $400,000 to $4.1 million. Benson was responsible for soliciting seven $1 million plus gifts to athletics, as well as numerous significant commitments from donors. Prior to his time at Old Dominion, Benson worked at Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc. as an Educational Channel manager. In his role with Coca-Cola, he managed the Educational Channel for the Commonwealth Division, which covers sales centers from eastern Delaware to eastern North Carolina. Benson developed financial and marketing proposals as well as negotiated beverage contracts with colleges and universities within his division. Benson and his wife Hunter are the parents of three daughters, Vandy Grace, Lydon and Hannum. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University. “I am excited to join the University at Albany athletics program at this stage in its growth and potential,” Benson said upon his hiring. “My family and I feel warmly welcomed by the UAlbany community, and I can’t wait to settle in and get to work.” “I’m pleased to welcome Mark to the University at Albany and the America East Conference,” said AE Commissioner Amy Huchthausen. “UAlbany has a robust athletics program and he takes the AD title at perfect time to build from a position of strength, both within the conference and nationally. I look forward to working with him as he moves the program forward.” “Mark was instrumental in orchestrating ODU’s meteoric rise to FBS football in just five seasons, while helping us sell out every home game we played,” said Old Dominion AD Wood Selig. “While ODU will greatly miss his substantial contributions and leadership, we are thrilled he will realize his professional goal of becoming a DI athletic director at a high profile academic institution. UAlbany is getting a rising star in the college athletic industry in Mark Benson.” “Mark Benson’s leadership will guide the growth of athletics at UAlbany,” said CAA Commissioner Tom Yeager. “We know he’ll apply his commitment and vision to the student-athletes, academics, and the university.” The University at Albany led an NCAA Division III program from 1972 to 1995, moved to Division II for four years and entered Division I competition in 1999. UAlbany sports has eight men’s and 11 women’s teams competing at the Division I intercollegiate level. Seventeen of the 19 are members of the America East Conference, while football competes in the Colonial Athletic Association, and women’s golf in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Since entering Division I, UAlbany has won 74 Conference championships and 25 regular season titles, and 31 teams have participated in NCAA tournaments. In the 2013-14 season, the Great Danes won eight conference championships and had 92 athletes achieve allConference honors. In 2006, the UAlbany Great Danes produced the first team in State University of New York history to play in the men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament, competing against UConn. Most notably, the UAlbany Great Danes excel as student-athletes. In 2013-14, the University had 30 America East All-Academic honorees, while four Great Danes were winners of a SUNY Chancellor Scholar-Athlete Award. UAlbany student-athletes have also volunteered more than 20,000 hours in local organizations and charities including the Salvation Army, Wounded Warriors Project, American Cancer Society and Big Brothers/ Big Sisters. Great Danes have been honored with ESPN Academic All-American Awards, All-American Honor Awards, Chancellor Scholar-Athlete Awards, America East Conference Academic Honor Roll and University Presidential Leadership Awards.

Some examples include but are not limited to: •Money, special discounts and/or free or reduced products/services. •Use of a telephone or credit card for personal reasons without charge or at a reduced rate. •Entertainment services such as; movie tickets, and/or tickets to professional sporting events. •Use of personal property such as; beach homes, boats, cars, and/ or stereos. Who is a Prospective Student-Athlete? •A prospective student-athlete (PSA) is a student who had started classes for the ninth grade or above, including students in prep schools, junior colleges and other four year institutions. In addition, a student who has not started classes for ninth grade becomes a PSA if the institution or a Booster provides the individual or the individual’s relatives or friends with any financial assistance or benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students in general. Two basic rules to follow are: Treat ALL STUDENTS as prospects; ASK BEFORE YOU ACT •A PSA remains a PSA even after he/she signs a National Letter of Intent or Financial Aid Agreement. •A PSA remains a PSA until he/she either attends classes in any term at UAlbany, participates in a regular squad practice or competition that occurs prior to the beginning of any term at UAlbany, or officially registers, enrolls, and attends classes during the summer prior to enrollment.

A contact is defined as any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardian(s) during which time any dialogue in excess of an exchange of a greeting occurs. Boosters are prohibited from contacting a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardian(s) to encourage the prospect to participate in intercollegiate athletics at UAlbany. Boosters are prohibited from engaging in the following: •Any contact with a PSA at any time whether in person, by mail or by telephone. •Any contact with a PSA’s coach, principal or counselor to gain information that would assist in evaluating the PSA either athletically or academically, including visiting the PSA’s educational institution to pick up film or transcripts. •Any involvement, directly or indirectly, in making arrangements for or giving any financial aid or other benefits to a prospect or his/her family, relatives or friends (such as gifts, awards, loans, employment, transportation, free or reduced rent or housing, etc.). •Providing entertainment during the prospect’s official visit. •Sending anything to a prospect including letters, cards, newspaper clippings, game programs, post cards, e-mails, etc. (the type of materials that may be sent and who may distribute such materials is strictly regulated by the NCAA); •Any contact with enrolled student-athletes at other four-year colleges or universities for the purpose of exploring their interest in transferring to UAlbany. If a student-athlete enrolled at another institution contacts you, do not discuss the possibility of transferring with the athlete. Immediately tell the student-athlete to contact the UAlbany Athletic Department. The following examples of limited contact are permissible: •Contacts made with a PSA who is an established family friend, relative or neighbor so long as the contact is not arranged by a UAlbany staff member and is not made for recruiting purposes; •An unavoidable, incidental contact with a prospect provided recruiting does not take place, only normal courtesy is involved and the contact is not pre-arranged. •Casual contacts at UAlbany athletic events, if incidental: •Contacts about summer employment only after the prospect has signed a National Letter of Intent or, in the case of a junior college prospect, only after the prospect has graduated or officially left the junior college. •Contact involved in a normal working relationship (i.e., booster who is a doctor or dentist who treats a prospect professionally) provided no recruiting is involved. •Viewing a prospect’s game at your own initiative (must not involve contact with the prospect).
