NEW Heavy duty Isuzu 8x4 range launched. Isuzu’s eagerly anticipated new FY Series 8x4 range is now available. The range offers nine model variants specifically developed for Australia. It provides an excellent platform for customers to specify an Isuzu for vocational applications, such as agitators, concrete pumping, front end refuse, hooklift bin collection and water tanker applications to name just a few. Available in three wheelbases, the FY Series comprises the FYJ 2000, FYH 2000 and FYX 2500 (10x4), and features load-sharing between the two Meritor steer axles allowing a front axle group capacity of 13,200 kg and a GVM ranging between 30,000 and 35,000 depending on the model. As well as being load-sharing, a further benefit of the front steel spring suspension is the adoption of a unique, damped mechanical load sharing mechanism between the two front axles. This feature contributes to the trucks’ already good road manners whilst also ensuring excellent steering performance at all times. In the rear there is a choice of either the versatile Isuzu 6-rod steel suspension or Hendrickson HAS461 air suspension, depending on what’s required for the application. In the case of the 10x4 FYX model, the additional Hendrickson D22 ‘tag’ axle rides on a liftable HLM2 trailing arm air suspension which automatically lowers and lifts depending on the load condition of the vehicle. 2

The industry standard American componentry continues with Meritor rear axles and cross difflocks as standard across the range - three transmissions are on offer. Powering the range is the robust SiTEC Series III 350 engine as used in other Isuzu FX models. This 9.8 litre, 6-cylinder Euro V engine produces 257 kW @ 2,000 RPM and 1,422 Nm at a low 1,200 - 1,500 RPM, placing its performance comfortably ahead of many competitors. Drivers are well catered for in the new models; the F Series cab is already widely regarded as one of the best in terms of ease of access, low noise, excellent visibility and comfort, and this is added to in the FY. Safety features include anti-lock braking system (ABS), ECE-R29-compliant cab, ECE-R93-compliant Front Underrun Protection Device (FUPD), driver SRS airbag and Isri 6860 air suspension driver’s seat with seatbelt pretensioner.
In the event that a driver may require a break while on the road, the range includes an ADR 42-04 compliant sleeper with mattress. The FY range also benefits from the inclusion of a new DAB+ radio/CD/DVD Digital Audio Visual Entertainment unit with 6.2” LCD touch screen. The unit features DAB+ digital radio, fully integrated Bluetooth capability with voice recognition and has 4GB internal storage for music files. Isuzu trucks helping Landells Signs expansion. Established for over 100 years, Landells Signs has become a leader in the design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of a wide variety of corporate signs for a diverse range of businesses.
The company’s head office and manufacturing facility is located in Sunshine, Melbourne, with a second manufacturing plant located in Sydney. The extensive range of signs includes retail and corporate signage, pylons, illuminated and large format printed vinyl signs. Landells’ clients include large supermarket groups, shopping centres and building companies throughout Australia. Another growing part of the business is event signage, the company recently being contracted to supply signage for both the Australian Open and Melbourne Grand Prix.

The company was originally run by Glen Woodman, under whose direction the company successfully grew into a national business providing clients with complete endto-end signage solutions. Today, the company continues to operate on this basis and is now managed by Glen’s son Shane, who has spent his entire working life in the company, developing a comprehensive understanding of the industry. In his role as Managing Director, Shane has been responsible for the continued expansion of the company based around a clear philosophy of providing outstanding client service.
“We have a long history of delivering complex projects on time, on budget and ensuring a high level of client satisfaction,” Shane said. “By keeping abreast of the latest trends, techniques and technologies it ensures that we remain a leader in the sign making industry,” Shane added. A recent expansion necessitated the need for additional trucks to assist in the transport of signs and installation equipment. “We plan to work our trucks hard and keep them for a long time so I therefore wanted the best trucks available. From my perspective Isuzu
sits at the top of the pile and was the only brand really worth considering,” Shane said. “We also tow scissor lifts behind our trucks, so I needed a truck with both high power and built-in strength,” Shane added. “After careful evaluation the NNR 200 model was selected as it can be driven by anyone with a car licence. We also selected the AMT transmission as it is just so much easier and relaxing to drive,” Shane went on to say. Shane purchased his first NNR 200 from Westar Trucks Derrimut around 12 months ago and the second one just recently.
He dealt with Keith Dusting at Westar whom Shane describes as being extremely helpful in the pre and post purchase process.
Both trucks are returned to Westar Trucks for servicing.
The most recent truck is fitted with a specially made folding annexe that makes for an extremely versatile load area. It provides a fully waterproof area or can simply be rolled back if taller signs need to be carried and operate as a standard tray truck. Driver reaction has been very positive. “A lot of drivers comment on how good and comfortable the Isuzus are especially the automatic transmission which they say is very smooth,” said Shane.

Western Star building a good reputation with AAA Trusses. AAA Trusses was established in 1986 by current Managing Director Colin Clements, supplying timber roof trusses to some of Melbourne’s best known residential builders.
Today the company is one of Melbourne’s leading manufacturers of not just roof trusses but pre fabricated wall frames, windows, floor joists and an extensive range of other timber products used in house builds. AAA Trusses’ head office and three manufacturing plants are located in Dandenong South, with a further two manufacturing plants in Hallam and another in Berwick. The company employs eighteen office staff and up to one hundred factory workers at any given time. Colin’s son, Andrew is employed in the business as the Sales Manager. Over the years the company has expanded to service not just the Melbourne metropolitan market but further afield to regional areas such as Geelong and Torquay. The increase in size of the company has resulted in AAA Trusses now operating six heavy duty semis and a number of smaller rigid trucks, all fitted with on-board remote controlled cranes. Some of the semis operate with unique trailers that can be extended from the standard 45ft length to 72ft making them ideal for carrying trusses. Long term employee, Ross Ware, looks after all truck purchasing and maintenance – he also drives one of the two 4800 FX Western Stars that AAA has purchased over the last 18 months. “When it came time for us to shop around for a new truck, I took a good look at what was available from a number of different manufacturers. I was very clear on what I wanted; a short bonneted truck fitted with a day cab. After looking closely at features such 6

as power, fuel capacity and of course price, the Western Star emerged as a clear winner,” Ross said. “The service and advice I received from Patterson Cheney during the purchase process was also excellent,” Ross added. The other crucial requirement that Ross needed was good visibility. “With the increase in dual occupancy developments and the resultant need to manoeuvere into constricted driveways, good visibility is an absolute must – and that’s where the Western Star excels,” Ross went on to say. “Driver comfort is also great and the Western Star is an easy truck to drive with a light clutch and responsive steering,” said Ross. Both Stars are fitted with the new Detroit DD13/15 engines which provide excellent power coupled with low noise – an important consideration when delivering trusses to residential areas in the early morning. “Compared to other trucks we’ve operated you really notice the quietness of the new Detroit engines,” Ross added. Ross takes both Western Stars back to Patterson Cheney for servicing, taking advantage of their 24 hour service facilities thereby minimising downtime.

MAN’s powerful yet economical TGX 540 is proving its mettle as an ideal B-Double prime mover with a range of operators across Australia. One such operator, Pickering’s Bulk Haulage is using their TGX as a B-Double bulk grain carrier, gaining exceptionally impressive results and feedback so far. Pickerings Bulk Haulage, based in Watchem, Victoria was established by Graham Pickering in 1974 and initially involved with livestock transport for the first seventeen years of operation until moving into bulk tipper work in 1989. The company now has five trucks, 4 B-Doubles and a quad dog covering the east coast of Australia both intra and inter-state carting predominantly potatoes and bulk grain. The TGX 540 sleeper cab was purchased in April 2012 from Westar Truck Centre in Derrimut where Graham dealt with Johan Middag. “In my opinion Johan is one of the best truck salesmen you’ll ever find – he’s just so knowledgeable on every aspect of the MAN product,” Graham said. In Graham’s own words his TGX has all the bells and whistles fitted. It pulls a B-Double belly dumper trailer rated for a 47.5 tonne payload in Victoria, with an all up weight of 68.5 tonnes. The TGX 540 features a 4 valve, 6-cylinder in-line engine with common rail injection, turbocharging and intercooling, providing an impressive 540hp and 2,500Nm torque at 1,050-1,350 rpm. “The power and torque is simply amazing considering the heavy load we pull, you don’t notice any slowing down regardless of the terrain,” Graham added.
After 115,000 trouble free kilometres Mr Pickering is exceptionally pleased with the MAN, particularly its fuel economy. “We are averaging 1.9 km/l, running mostly VIC intrastate, one way empty which is a great result – better than any other truck in the fleet,” Graham went on to say. A key attraction of the MAN relates to its long service intervals of 60,000km. In addition, the high number of sealed for life components in the MAN is also proving a high end benefit as it translates to lower servicing costs. “We put it in for its first 60,000km service at Westar and aside from the required oil change nothing needed to be done, not one thing – that’s remarkable from my perspective,” said Graham. Drivers are also hugely enthusiastic about driving the TGX. “My drivers just love the MAN. One of my older drivers tells me that he can get out of the TGX after a 1,000kms and walk normally – that’s something he hasn’t been able to do before!” Graham added. “The TGX sleeper cab has one of the largest storage areas and bed sizes of any European cab and this was another key attraction,” Graham said.

As with all MAN’s the TGX features the latest in active and passive safety features including a built-in crumple zone, the latest cabin ergonomics, disc brakes all round, Anti Lock Braking system (ABS) and a state of the art Electronic Brakeforce System (EBS) which ensures a shorter emergency stopping distance. “I cannot fault our MAN TGX – with its combination of high power, low tare weight, excellent fuel economy and cab comfort the MAN really has ticked all the boxes – I’m really pleased with it,” Graham added. Graham also runs a fertiliser spreading business and given his experience with his TGX it’s no surprise that he recently purchased a new MAN 18.340 4x4 which he describes as ‘brilliant’. The absence of a conventional stick shift in favour of an auto also comes in for praise. “My drivers love the 12 speed Tipmatic transmission which makes driving an absolute breeze,” Graham went onto say. Family owned Regal Marine, established in 1969, is Victoria and Tasmania’s largest retail supplier of Malibu Ski and Wakeboard Boats and Tabs all plate alloy boats. Regal are located in the Melbourne suburb of Forest Hills whilst the Australian made Malibu boats are manufactured in Albury, NSW.

The company recently diversified into the growing business of 5th Wheeler Caravans having become the Victorian dealer for the Evergreen Ultima brand. 5th Wheelers have grown in popularity as they enable the towing of a much longer van due to the gooseneck on the front of the van which connects with a hitch located in the tub area of a Ute. This allows for the towing of an Evergreen 5th Wheeler 30 foot in length – versus a maximum 21ft caravan using a traditional draw bar. 5th Wheelers also offer higher levels of safety and stability due to a large part of the towing weight being located over the Ute’s rear axle. The growth of Regal Marine’s 5th Wheeler business resulted in the need for a new Ute to assist in demonstrating the 5th wheelers to customers and to take the vans to various trade shows. Regal Marine Sales Manager James Verheyen and Travis Jamieson from Patterson Cheney Isuzu Ute have had a close association for some time and have attended numerous trade
shows in tandem where they have joined forces to offer a 5th Wheeler and D-MAX package. “Naturally when the time came to look for a Ute, the D-MAX was at top of the list. I knew Travis well and had a very good relationship with him – he’s provided great service and is very knowledgeable about the product,” James said. “A good towing capacity, good power and excellent fuel economy was naturally important to me and this is where D-MAX also came up trumps,” James added. D-MAX has a 3 tonne braked towing capacity, class leading fuel economy and a well proven 3.0 litre turbo common rail diesel engine that generates 130kW and a peak torque output of 380Nm at 1800rpm. The torque is delivered across a flat curve through a large part of the rev-range to aid drivability and makes for relaxed towing. Safety was another important consideration for James and the D-MAX’s comprehensive safety features were a key attraction. The new D-MAX comes equipped with 4-channel 4-sensor Anti-skid Brake System (ABS) with Electronic
Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS) and Brake Assist (BA), along with six (6) airbags (dual front, curtain and side). A highstrength tailor blank welded passenger safety cell also increases occupant safety. James ultimately selected an all new Isuzu D-MAX 4x4 LS-U Crew Ute with automatic transmission. The newly-developed five-speed ‘Rev-Tronic’ automatic transmission features an adaptive-learning function which constantly monitors brake and throttle applications. This allows the transmission to automatically
select the most appropriate shift points and lock-up points depending on the driver’s behaviour, the vehicle speed and the vehicle load. The auto also has ‘Hill Descent’ and ‘HillAscent’ modes.

The fuel economy is also outstanding - we’re currently averaging 15 litres per 100 kms which is excellent when you take

A warm welcome to Mike Lawson who joins us in the role of Sales Consultant at Patterson Cheney Isuzu, Dandenong.
Patterson Cheney’s fleet department is set up to look after the specific requirements of all fleets including those for major transport companies, utilities providers, government departments, local Councils and fire authorities.
For most of his career Mike has been involved with the automotive industry, commencing with a sales cadetship at the age of 18. Since then he has held a variety of sales roles dealing with both passenger cars and commercial vehicles which has taken him as far afield as Far North Queensland. For the 12 months prior to joining Patterson Cheney, Mike was driving B-Doubles running the Melbourne – Sydney - Brisbane route, giving him additional knowledge and experience to assist his customers make informed decisions about their truck purchases.
With their extensive Isuzu truck knowledge Scott Adams and Tim Emeney can assist fleet buyers with all their enquiries and purchase requirements. Located at 200 Cheltenham Road Dandenong, Scott and Tim can be reached on 9215 2300.
