New Isuzu FYJ 8x4 helps MEX Infrastructure expand its capabilities and reduce its environmental impact Water and gas main construction company MEX Infrastructure’s new Isuzu FYJ 8x4 will help the company expand its capabilities whilst reducing the impact on the environment. MEX Infrastructure, formerly known as Mooroolbark Excavations, has been operating as a family company since 1976 when current owner Ewen MacDonald started with a single backhoe. Today, with the assistance of Ewen’s three sons, MEX has grown to be a leader in the construction and installation of water and gas mains offering a complete ‘one-stop’ package to leading utilities organisations and land developers. MEX undertakes a wide variety of works from small development projects up to large diameter supply main extensions. They are capable of undertaking almost any works associated with gas, potable & recycled water construction. The company is skilled in a number of different welding techniques with a variety of plastic piping. Additionally, they specialise in trenchless installation of pipelines through the use of their horizontal directional boring equipment and nondestructive excavation. The company is currently accredited to undertake works with a variety of Gas & Water authorities, those that include; South East Water, Yarra Valley Water, APA Group, Multinet and City West Water. Over the last few years MEX has expanded its capabilities, investing in the necessary equipment, personnel and training to really offer a turnkey type of contracting that the industry has been asking for. MEX is no stranger to Isuzu, having operated a number of models over the years including crew cabs that act as the primary transport for their crews.

“We’ve always had a very positive experience with both our Isuzus and Patterson Cheney so when the time came to invest in a heavy duty truck Isuzu’s new 8x4 twin steer models were at the top of the list,” MEX Operations Manager, Cameron MacDonald said. Ewen MacDonald did a lot of research into the truck that would most suit their needs, eventually selecting the FYJ 2000 Auto. “User friendliness and ease of driving were important, so the auto transmission and air suspension of the FYJ seemed ideal,” Cameron went on to say. A lot of thought went into the new truck to enable it to successfully operate as an ‘all-in-one’ vacuum excavation unit. In addition to the vacuum tank the truck has a high pressure water gun with 5,000psi pressure – so powerful that it can excavate a trench in a matter of minutes. Other benefits of the pressure gun is that it avoids using destructive techniques, is cleaner and more effective and gives MEX the ability to expose existing assets without damaging them - in keeping with MEX’s philosophy of minimising its impact on the surrounding environment. The vacuum tanker is also fitted with a remote control boom which enables the operator to direct the hose to the exact point of the hole. The boom also takes the weight of the hose, which is instrumental in both protecting the hose and eliminating much of the traditional manual handling. “This new 8x4 Isuzu will provide us with a stable and secure platform so we can tackle the bigger jobs that the smaller trucks just couldn’t handle - allowing us to stay one step ahead of the competition,” Cameron summed up.
