FIRST WESTERN STAR FOR IKON Commercial cleaning company IKON Services has recently taken delivery of a Western Star 4784SXC 8x4 fitted with a hook lift. IKON is owned and operated by Managing Director George Tahan and his son Greg and provides cleaning services to a broad range of clients in both the private and public sector. This includes entertainment complexes, offices, universities, shopping centres, markets & outdoor venues as well as councils and government sites. This is IKON’s first Western Star and they were particularly attracted to the new 4700 twin steer model due to its lightweight chassis which allows Ikon to pick up 17.5 tonne skips giving the company a key advantage over competitors. Branch manager Peter Cardamone was responsible for the selection and purchase of the 4700 model and was also impressed with its other features that include the set-back front axle and sloped bonnet, which offers the dual benefits of excellent manoeuvrability and visibility – a vital factor in waste removal.

King and Wilson’s head office is located in Mount Waverley, Victoria and they also have branches in Sydney and Canberra. King and Wilson primarily focuses on private and corporate International relocations, high value fine art transportation and Interstate removals. Robert has been in the removals business for over 20 years and purchased his first Isuzu FTD 1000 back in 2008. It was the extremely positive experience with both the truck and the after sales service from both the manufacturer and dealer that gave him no reason to look elsewhere when the time came to purchase two more additional trucks. “Because I took the extended warranty option on my first truck which gave me a full six year warranty, I haven’t had to spend

a cent on it – any problem that I have had has been fixed quickly by the dealer, no problem, no questions asked – a complete contrast to the other trucks in my fleet,” said Robert. Robert bought his new FXD 1000 models from Westar Derrimut. “Sales consultant Michael Collins from Westar was fantastic – it was a pleasure to deal with him and I had no issues whatsoever - he looked after everything every step of the way,” Robert went on to say. The two new Isuzus have custom bodies fitted and manufactured by Prestige Motor Bodies. The tray bodies feature a ‘hungry’ box up front and then space for a 20 foot container at the rear, providing great versatility and flexibility.

As with his first truck, Robert plans on taking his new trucks back to Patterson Cheney Dandenong where he finds the 24 hour service facility just brilliant for minimising downtime. “I wouldn’t take my trucks back anywhere else apart from an authorised Isuzu dealer. They know the product through and through and I’m 100% satisfied with the service I receive. Best of all I can take it in to Patterson Cheney after work at 5pm and it can be ready for me at 5am the next day to start work again,” Robert enthused. “With Isuzu it’s not just the product that’s
good – it’s the after care service and extended warranties they have which is second to none,” Robert went on to say. “And with Isuzu, it’s not just a bit of paper, I just know they’re going to back up their warranty with action,” he concluded. Robert’s latest Isuzus were delivered in August this year – and yes, Robert has an extended warranty on both!

MORCOMBE’S TRANSPORT 06
The history of the Morcombe’s Farming and Transport enterprises dates back to early this century when Arthur Morcombe started the farm as a First World War settler. The transport division of the business was born soon after, initially responsible for delivering supplies to build some of the very first roads in the district which then lead onto carting produce and livestock thereafter.
The original farm, located just outside Ballarat at Burrumbeet, remains to this day and has steadily expanded to become a mixed farm that includes merino sheep and Hereford cattle as well as crops such as wheat, barley and canola. Today the farm and transport divisions operate as separate businesses owned and operated by family members. Morcombe’s Transport, which Mark and cousin Stephen look after, is mainly involved in livestock transport covering a wide area that can include both short local trips to sale yards through to long haul interstate trips to places such as Dubbo NSW to collect livestock. “One of the key things I was looking at in a new truck was a spacious sleeper cab. Being a driver myself, I know how important it is to be able to stand up and walk around in the cab after a long drive. Also to have plenty of storage space and room for all your personal possessions and things like a fridge. Western Star’s roomy 54 inch ‘stratosphere’ cab satisfied all those requirements,” Mark said. The other criteria that Mark had was for an engine with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology and that’s where Cummins latest engine, the ISXe5, fitted the bill perfectly. The SCR exhaust after treatment on the ISXe5 is a fully integrated system developed by Cummins Emissions Solutions (CES), dosing urea into the exhaust stream to reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. The ISXe5 has the same base engine design as the current Cummins EGR engines but incorporates a new common
rail fuel system, a wastegate turbocharger and a single overhead camshaft. The XPI (extreme high pressure) common rail fuel system provides very precise injection and combustion control. It operates independently of engine speed and provides injection pressures greater than 30,000 psi. “I’ve always been a fan of Cummins engines and so the new 15 litre ISXe5 engine was the obvious choice,” Mark went on to say. After driving the Western Star for a few months Mark reports that he’s very happy with it. “I’m really pleased with it. The performance and fuel economy are both excellent. It drives really well on the road and despite its sizeable length, I find the maneuverability very good too,” he added. Mark dealt with James Leo at Westar Truck Centre and in his own words the purchase experience went ‘nice and smoothly’ with Mark returning to Westar for the first oil services. “Given the truck is away for long periods of time I had an auto greaser fitted which provides me with added peace of mind between services,” said Mark. With three young sons, Mark has high hopes that both Morcombe’s Farm and Morcombe’s Transport will be around long into this century!

MAN HELPS HIGH ACCESS GROUP SCALE NEW HEIGHTS HIGH ACCESS GROUP WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2004, COMMENCING WITH JUST A FEW CHERRY PICKERS TO CAPITALISE ON THE PAY TV BOOM THAT OCCURRED IN THAT PERIOD WHICH NECESSITATED OVERHEAD LINES TO BE CONNECTED TO HOUSES AND SUPPORT THE EXISTING ELECTRICAL BUSINESS.
Owned and operated by brothers John and Michael Newton, the company has steadily expanded and today has over 100 pieces of machinery including scissor lifts, boom lifts and travel towers in its extensive fleet. The company operates up and down the entire East and South coast of Australia from Brisbane through to Adelaide from its base in Melbourne. High Access Hire essentially acts as a conduit for councils, road authorities, major telcos and their contractors, window cleaning companies, sporting arenas, signage companies and the like - renting vehicles out to companies to access high reach areas. In addition, High Access also operates an associated company that does a lot of public lighting maintenance work, especially around Melbourne and its freeways. The operation of any high access vehicle requires comprehensive training and licensing and the company’s expertise in this area is well recognised. With business growing, the need to offer platforms with the longest reach

and highest extension necessitated the company to look into additional heavy duty trucks.
“There were a lot of reasons why we selected MAN for this role. Firstly they had an excellent reputation and importantly the travel tower manufacturer had MAN as the preferred platform. Their adaptability to the intricate requirements of the travel tower machinery was also very good,”
said John. Like MAN trucks, the towers are made by a German company, Ruthmann, and are installed in Germany before being shipped to Australia for final pre delivery. “Ruthmann towers are very high tech, adaptable and strong yet lightweight which gives them the ability to reach higher and further from the same platform,” John added. High Access now has two TGM 6x4’s fitted with 46 metre high towers and two TGM 4x4’s fitted with a 40 and a 33 metre tower. In addition to the height, these

As John says, it was a complicated process organising all of this and he heaps praise on Patterson Cheney Sales Consultant Tony Lamanna, who he says did a fantastic job. He has also found the after sales service excellent with the 24 hour servicing facility that Patterson Cheney offers being a major benefit to minimising downtime and keeping the trucks on the road. Feedback on the new MANs from the drivers is excellent. “We try and keep one driver for each truck and the drivers certainly love the MANs – in particular the cab comfort, quietness and overall ergonomics,” John went on to say. John also reports that the fuel efficiency is good considering the tare weight and the kind of work that the trucks do. In keeping with High Access Group’s ongoing growth, another TGS 6x6 and 8x8 are currently on order with Patterson Cheney. 09

The business has been operating for four years in the growth area of the western suburbs of Melbourne and offers a huge range of services – in particular getting those small jobs done which other tradies may not do.

Rob has three children and enjoys kite boarding and spending family time with his three kids at the beach. JACQUE SEMERJIAN Jacque joined the Patterson Cheney Group in December initially in used trucks before moving to new Isuzu Truck Sales in June and is excited for this new opportunity.
